A while back, I said that there are some cultural phenomena that seem less created than discovered, as though the archetype was drifting around in cultural limbo to be stumbled over by the "creator." Examples I offered were Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson and Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp. I don't think I am the first to make this observaton. I also doubt that I'm the first to say that David Suchet as Hercule Poirot owes a great deal to Chaplin's Tramp. Yes, he dresses better and isn't really as funny, but he's as fussy in similar ways, he's small, doffs his hat politely at almost any opportunity, carries a cane, has a distinctive walk and an emblematic mustache. There are other similarities, but these will do for now. I doubt that Agatha Christie thought in these terms, nor did Tony Randall nor Ustinov, but I'd be surprised if the thought hadn't occurred to David Suchet.
