10 Little known facts about Lauren Bacall... The long career of Bacall, who died Tuesday at age 89, has been well documented, but here are 10 things you didn’t know about her early years in Hollywood: - The first mention of “Betty Bacall” came in the May 19, 1943 edition of Variety, with an item suggesting that director Howard Hawks scooped the model-turned-starlet off the street in midtown Manhattan. “Could actress Betty Bacall be slated for screen stardom. Howard Hawks nabbed her for fast buildup, right off 44th Street, too.” - The day before Bogart and Bacall were married in Mansfield, Ohio, in May 1945, the two went to Chicago to take part in “I Am an American Day” festivities, an wartime effort to recognize recently naturalized U.S. citizens. Variety’s year in review for 1945 noted that with the end of Bogart’s tempestuous marriage to actress Mayo Methot, “war on the home front really ended” while Bogart’s “subsequent merger with Lauren Bacall wiped the World War off the fro ...

It's the birthday of John Steinbeck (books by this author), born in Salinas, California (1902). His early books didn't sell well at all, and he supported himself as a manual laborer. His first success came with the 1935 novel Tortilla Flat, which was the story of King Arthur and the Round Table told through the lives of pleasure-loving Mexican Americans. He was paid several thousand dollars for the movie rights; the film was released in 1942 and starred Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr. Steinbeck's book Of Mice and Men (1937) was very popular, but it was also considered vulgar and unpatriotic, and Steinbeck was accused of having an "anti-business attitude." In the late 1930s, he was sent by a newspaper to report on the situation of migrant farmers, so he got an old bakery truck and drove around California's Central Valley. He found people starving, thousands of them crowded in miserable shelters, sick with typhus and the flu. He wrote everything down in his journal, and in less than six months, he had a 200, ...

this is the best news since Hedy Lamarr's frequency hopping work came to light.
I love how everyday, you can learn something new and interesting. For instance, did you know Hedy Lamarr (the 30 and 40's Hollywood star) was the co-inventor of the technology used by the military in WWII for wireless communications? Or that when she passed away in 2000, she was living in a normal suburban home next to Red Bug Elementary, about 3 miles away from my home?
Hedy Lamarr, her contribution to wifi. Proof that some actors do a lot more than act.

Tomorrow at 10:30 am, I will testify before a House committee with my colleague, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, about our bipartisan bill (H.R. 863) to form a commission to explore the best possible way to create a National Women’s History Museum in Washington D.C. Less than five percent of the 2,400 national historic landmarks chronicle women's achievement. Of the 210 statues in the United States Capitol, only nine honor female leaders. And a recent survey of eighteen history textbooks found that only ten percent of the individuals identified in the text were women. A National Women’s History Museum in Washington would change that by telling the fascinating, yet mostly untold stories of important women in American History, like Agent 355, the mysterious woman who sent vital information to General Washington during the Revolutionary War, or Hedy Lamarr, the luminous Hollywood star who invented a radio-guided torpedo that contained the technology that gave rise to cell phone, Wi-Fi and GPS. Our daughters and s ...
