SISIR MANCHA 11:15 A.M Sunset Boulevard (stylized onscreen as Sunset Blvd) is a 1950 American film noir directed and co-written by Billy Wilder, and produced and co-written by Charles Brackett. It was named after the boulevard that runs through Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, California. The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenwriter, and Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star who draws him into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen, with Erich von Stroheim as Max Von Mayerling, her butler and first husband. Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough and Jack Webb play supporting roles. Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by leading silent film actors Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner and Anna Q. Nilsson. Praised by many critics when first released, Sunset Boulevard was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won three. It is widely accepted as a class ...

I'm waiting for Mark Halperin and Bob Woodward to collaborate on a Beltway "tell-all" book. It will save me a whole lot of effort in dismissing them both as the Rona Barrett and Hedda Hopper of the DC set. I'm not saying, of course, that they write fiction. Writing fiction takes imagination and a modicum of talent. These jerks transcribe tea room gossip, if you know what I'm saying.

Finally, a few minutes to eight, all the little crises dealt with, Gus, still looking cool as a cucumber, stepped up to the mic and made an announcement. “Attention everyone! Places, please! Ready at the bar? Rico, this is it! Ladies, let's shake them hips! Maestro? Music, please!” Nodding to Gus, I gave the boys a downbeat and we launched into 'Quiet Village.' Spread across the room, the girls waved their arms and undulated in the best Hollywood imitation of a hula dance. Rico, inside his cage, rattled the bars for effect. Silverman started in with the bird calls and Gus raised his hands. “Open the doors!” he ordered. The doors were thrown wide and in they came, the best Los Angeles had to offer. Leading the charge was none other than Hedda Hopper, one of her spectacular hats, rimmed with peacock feathers, bobbing as she led the parade. The Bogarts were there, Carmen Miranda strutted in, without the fruit hat, Busby Berkeley was seen, as was Lena Horne, seemingly every Los Angeles society columni ...
Six Cylinder Love is a 1923 silent film comedy produced and distributed by Fox Film and directed by Elmer Clifton. It is based on a popular 1921 Broadway play and stars Ernest Truex from the play. Since I still see these showbiz myths presented as "facts", here's another short list: Irving Berlin could neither read music nor play a piano. All his famous songs were written by an anonymous black man whom Berlin kept squirreled away in a tiny apartment, and to whom he paid a pittance. All of director Dorothy Arzner's films have a strong feminist slant. Lucille Ball was a failed movie actress who came to TV as a last resort. Kirk Douglas was the first Hollywood luminary to break the blacklist by hiring and giving billing to writer Dalton Trumbo. Hundreds of Hollywood careers were destroyed by columnists like Hedda Hopper, Louella Parsons and Walter Winchell.
Principal photography begins October 30th. Confirmed by Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons.

Tonight's Svengoolie-hosted flick on Me-TV at 9 Central is "The Deadly Mantis" from 1957. It stars Craig Stevens and William Hopper.
