Five-star Chelsea extend lead A review of Saturday's action in the Barclays Premier League. Diego Costa took his top-flight tally for the season to 17 as Chelsea extended their Barclays Premier League lead to five points with a crushing 5-0 win over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium. Costa and Oscar each helped themselves to a first-half brace as the home side made a shocking start to life without Wilfried Bony. Jose Mourinho's men seized control with just 50 seconds on the clock when Oscar won the ball from Gylfi Sigurdsson and fired home the opener from 25 yards. Sigurdsson almost atoned for his error immediately when he struck the post from long-range, but that was to prove the home side's only clear chance of the afternoon as Chelsea ran riot. Costa made it 2-0 after 20 minutes and a desperate blunder by Federico Fernandez allowed the Spain international to fire home his second just after the half-hour. Oscar put the Blues 4-0 up two minutes later in a half in which Willian also hit the woodwork twice - ...

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he felt Adam Lallana's unlikely first goal of a double in the encouraging 4-1 victory over Swansea City on Monday encapsulated the kind of intense pressing that carried his team to three points. Liverpool were dominant for the majority of the Barclays Premier League encounter at Anfield, moving their visitors from side to side, forward and backward to fashion the space in which to flex their scoring muscles. The 3-4-3 formation that has helped the Reds rekindle their form during recent weeks blossomed further throughout a bitterly cold evening on Merseyside, with supporters in attendance warmed by Alberto Moreno's opener. Lallana chased down Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski early in the second half and turned a seemingly futile cause into a healthier advantage when the subsequent clearance clattered off him and into the Kop end net. Gylfi Sigurdsson reduced the arrears almost immediately, but the No.20 grabbed a brace in the contest with a smart dribble and finish ...
My Top 10 Best Premier League Attacking Midfielders 2014 - 10) Gylfi Sigurdsson, Tottenham Hotspur/Swansea City The Iceland international may not have been in the first team at Spurs, but since returning to the Swans he has been a different player. He already has eight assists this season. 9) Oscar, Chelsea The young Brazilian is a key part of the team leading the race for the Premier League title, and he wasn't too shabby last season either. He is a big part of why the Blues are playing better football than they used to. 8) Christian Eriksen, Tottenham Hotspur A languid forward thinking player, the Dane is already is already one goal behind how many he got in the last league campaign with six. 7) Juan Mata, Manchester United The diminutive Spaniard has been more successful than most realise at Old Trafford. He has 11 goals and six assists since joining. 6) Angel di Maria, Manchester United Although he only joined in the summer, the former Real Madrid man has already shown his class in England. Gylfi Sigurdsson is confident that Mauricio Pochettino will be given time to work his magic at Tottenham.
Gylfi Sigurdsson is appreciative of his teammate Wilfried Bony and Tottenham's Harry Kane.
SIGGY OUTLINES SIMILARITIES BETWEEN BONY AND KANE Gylfi Sigurdsson has outlined the similarities between his Swansea City teammate Wilfried Bony and Tottenham Hotspur youngster Harry Kane. Both Bony and Kane are strikers and have been in impressive form in recent weeks in the Premier League. While 26-year-old Ivory Coast international striker Bony scored seven goals and created 17 chances in 15 Premier League appearances, Kane has scored twice and created six chances in 11 league matches. Although the stats are firmly in the Swansea striker’s favour, one needs to consider that Kane has only just started to get some decent playing time and is still 21 years of age. Sigurdsson, who joined Swansea from Tottenham in the summer transfer window, has underlined the similarities between the two strikers. “They are similar in the sense that they are players who can score goals from nothing," Sky Sports quotes the Iceland international as saying. ”They have a wonderful finish. “Bony is probably physically s ...
• Sanchez scores sixth goal in his last four league games • Arsenal lose their second league match this season • Gylfi Sigurdsson scores his second goal of the campaign • Swansea have claimed 13 points from 18 at home Swansea came from behind with two late goals to claim a memorable win over Arsenal at the Liberty Stadium. Arsenal took the lead when Alexis Sanchez finished from close range after an excellent run and pass from Danny Welbeck. But a stunning Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick and a fine header from substitute Bafetimbi Gomis sealed Swansea's victory. The win sees Garry Monk's men leapfrog the Gunners into fifth place in the Premier League table. For Arsene Wenger's side, meanwhile, defeat caps a miserable week after their Champions League collapse against Anderlecht on Tuesday, in which they threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has blamed Arsene Wenger's inability to make changes during key moments for Arsenal's defeat against Swansea City. The north London club took the lead early in the second half from Alexis Sanchez's goal. The Gunners were leading till the final quarter of the match before Gylfi Sigurdsson's brilliant free kick helped the Swans equalise. Arsenal were without the services of Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy, who are on the sidelines with long-term injuries. Calum Chambers played in the right-back position, while left-back Nacho Monreal was partnering Per Mertesacker in the heart of the defence. Lack of physical presence helped Jefferson Montero to put in the cross for Bafetimbi Gomis to score the winner in the 78th minute. The former Liverpool defender believes Wenger could have changed his tactics and avoided another defeat. "I thought Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had a good game in terms of going forward for Arsenal but at half-time it was clear Chambers is having one of th ...
The Frenchman has admitted his side face more immediate problems than chasing down the Premier League leaders Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists that he has "different worries" than being concerned about Chelsea's progress at the top of the table. After the midweek draw with Anderlecht, the Gunners were again guilty of throwing away points against Swansea City on Sunday as goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis secured a 2-1 win for the hosts at the Liberty Stadium. The result leaves Arsenal 12 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea although Wenger is more concerned with winning games than worrying about Chelsea and their lead at the top. He told Sky Sports: "At the moment we have different worries than that. We just lost a game that we feel we shouldn't have lost. We have to live in a realistic world, in football you have to win the games you can win and today was one. If you want to challenge for the Premier League, you have to be a bit more realistic than we were today." Quizzed over ...

England Posted on November 10, 2014 by john Monk: We seized the initiative(PA) Garry Monk felt Swansea City were rewarded for seizing the initiative when they came from behind to shock Arsenal with a 2-1 victory at the Liberty Stadium. Alexis Sanchez had fired Arsenal ahead with his 12th goal of the season after 63 minutes but Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised with a brilliant 25-yard 75th minute free-kick before substitute Bafetimbi Gomis’ first English Premier League goal three minutes later took Swansea above the Gunners and into the top five. “They got the goal and you’re thinking to yourself what can you do to get back into the game,” Swansea manager Monk said after a feisty encounter which saw ten players booked – five from each side. “Gylfi scored a great free-kick which put us on level par at 1-1. “I wanted us to seize the initiative and we grew stronger after we scored the equaliser.

Defeat for United's Dutch duo Manchester United's Dutch players suffered a shock 2-0 defeat as the Netherlands lost to fast-improving Iceland in Group A of the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Robin van Persie captained the side and Daley Blind also played the full 90 minutes as the World Cup semi-finalists were beaten in Reykjavik. Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson converted a 10th-minute penalty and doubled the advantage before the break. Van Persie had a shot blocked following an Arjen Robben pass and moments later Blind's centre led to Robben spurning another decent chance when he headed wide just before the half-hour mark. Although firing over the bar five minutes after the break, the skipper was unable to inspire his troops on a disappointing night for the Dutch. Blind supplied a couple of dangerous crosses as the visitors chased a comeback, one of which just failed to find a clean connection from van Persie after an Iceland defender partially intervened. This was the second defeat in the opening three qualif ...

Straight It was Iceland's first ever victory over the Netherlands in 11 meetings. Volleyed Sigurdsson scored twice before the break, firing home from the spot in the 10th minute after Stefan de Vrij had brought down Birkir Bjarnason. Iceland definitely gave us the result of the night thanks to a brilliant Sigurdsson volley.
European qualifies roundup: The Netherlands' poor start continued on Monday as a Gylfi Sigurdsson brace earned Iceland a 2-0 win in their European Qualifier, while Graziano Pelle scored for Italy on his debut. Swansea midfielder Sigurdsson opened the scoring with a 10th-minute penalty in Reykjavik, and sealed matters with a second goal three minutes before half-time to earn his country their first triumph over the Oranje, who remain on just three points after three games in Group A. The result maintained Iceland's 100 per cent record in the pool - a record shared by the Czech Republic, who earlier made it three wins from three with an entertaining 4-2 success in Kazakhstan. Southampton forward Graziano Pelle marked his Italy debut with a goal as Antonio Conte's side defeated Malta 1-0 in Group H. Great volley by Gylfi against Holland -
The Netherlands' World Cup hangover continues to linger and they remain off the pace in their bid to qualify for Euro 2016 after a 2-0 loss in Iceland on Monday night. Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson scored both the goals and Iceland now have nine points from nine in Group A and sit alongside the Czech Republic, who also have a 100 per cent record. EURO qualifers BBC The Netherlands were beaten in Iceland to suffer their second defeat in three Euro 2016 qualifiers. Two goals from Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson kept Iceland top of Group A, six points above the Dutch, who came third at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In Wales' Group B, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Belgium drew 1-1, while Omer Damari scored a hat-trick as Israel beat Andorra 4-1. Southampton's Graziano Pelle scored the only goal as Italy defeated Malta 1-0. Pelle, 29, was making his debut in a match that saw both sides reduced to 10 men as Malta's Michael Mifsud was sent off after 27 minutes, before Italian Leonardo Bonucci was dismissed with 17 minutes remaining. It has been a terrible start to the Netherlands' campaign for new boss Guus Hiddink, who took over the national side in the summer after Louis Van Gaal left to join Manchester United. The Dutch lost their first Group A game 2-1 in Czech Republic and needed to come from behind to beat Kazakhstan 3-1 on Friday, before losing in Re ...

Swansea recorded their first ever win over Everton to reach the fourth round of the Capital One Cup. The Welsh side took the lead in the first half when Nathan Dyer poked in after excellent work by Jefferson Montero down the left. Gylfi Sigurdsson tapped in the second after Jonjo Shelvey's delivery was inadvertently headed on to the bar by Everton's Sylvain Distin. Substitute Marvin Emnes drilled in an brilliant third late in the game. This latest defeat means the Toffees have only managed two wins in all competitions so far this season, although perhaps more worryingly for manager Roberto Martinez, his team have only managed one clean sheet. The Spaniard described his team's defensive travails as "spooky". After the full-time whistle the rain-drenched backline had a haunted look. A major problem was down Swansea's left. Full-back Tony Hibbert, playing in a club record equalling 15th season, was often left treading water by winger Montero. It was on one of those forays that led to the first Swans goal wh ...

Van Gaal doubts Manchester United title credentials The Dutchman was at pains to point out that he learned nothing new from Saturday's defeat to Swansea City, insisting that he was already well aware of his side's problems By Sam Lee Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has conceded that his side may not be capable of winning the Premier League title, but insists he knew that before Saturday's defeat against Swansea City. The Red Devils lost 2-1 at Old Trafford and despite stating throughout pre-season that he wants the club to challenge for first place, he has admitted that it is not possible with his current squad. Asked if the players at his disposal are good enough to win the title, Van Gaal replied: "That is not the question because I knew that before this game. "But also with other players it's also a question of if they can play like a team and if they can reach the level. And today we don't reach that level and then you cannot play as a team so easily. "And that we have seen today. But in spite o ...

Tottenham (Spurs) Tottenham get Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino, supplanting Tim Sherwood. A couple of players have gone back and forth however the centralized computer of the squad remained. He appears quick to get the best out of failures, for example, Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela, instead of offer on for a huge misfortune and wind up purchasing more lavish dangers. Here are their arrangements as such: In: Ben Davies (£10m), Michel Vorm (P/EX), Eric Dier (£4m) Out: Iago Falque, Gylfi Sigurdsson, H Gomes, Jake Livermore Along these lines, virtually the same squad as last season in addition to a decent left back, and a junior focus back. They are again in the Europa League so need to manage the wild calendar. Regardless they require an alternate couple of players in through the entryway, and conceivably to drop some of their higher earners who are not in the first group picture. Here is their potential lineup this weekend: Lloris, Walker, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Davies, Paulinho, Holtby, Lamela, ...
Thank you Gylfi Sigurdsson, all is forgiven concerning your terrible decision to choose Spurs over Liverpool. 👍
Manchester United 1-2 Swansea City: Sigurdsson condemns Van Gaal to opening day defeat The Iceland international struck late on to give Garry Monk's men a famous victory, despite Wayne Rooney cancelling out Ki Sung-Yueng's first-half opener with an acrobatic strike Gylfi Sigurdsson's smart finish saw Swansea Cityclaim a surprise 2-1 win at Manchester United as the Louis Van Gaal era started in defeat. Sigurdsson bagged the winner 18 minutes from time on Saturday as Van Gaal - tasked with improving the fortunes at Old Trafford after David Moyes' disastrous spell in charge last term - endured a day he will want to forget in his opening Premier League fixture. The Dutchman's 3-4-1-2 system did not appear to suit United despite being used in pre-season and they found themselves behind when Ki Sung-Yueng scored from 20 yards just before the half-hour mark. Van Gaal, known for his tinkering, swapped to 4-4-1-1 in the second half and it appeared to be the tonic for United's response, led by new captain Wayne R . ...
Swansea City ruined Louis Van Gaal’s first game as Manchester United manager after claiming a shock 2-1 victory at Old Trafford. Summer signing Gylfi Sigurdsson scored Swansea’s winner with just under 20 minutes remaining, having also teed up Ki Sung-yueng’s first-half opener before Wayne Rooney acrobatically levelled for United early in the second half. United suffered a blow midway through the first half when debutant Jesse Lingard was forced off due to injury and was replaced by Adnan Januzaj. Swansea took the lead with the first real chance of the game on 28 minutes when Sigurdsson rolled a pass across the edge of the area and Ki, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, placed a low shot beyond David de Gea’s reach. Louis Van Gaal brought Nani on for Javier Hernandez at half-time, ditching his 3-5-2 formation in the process, and saw United equalise within eight minutes of the restart. Juan Mata’s corner was helped on at the near post by Phil Jones and newly-appointed captain Rooney’s ...

Premier League round-up: Spurs *** dramatic win after controversial clash with West Ham, Louis Van Gaal gets off to a bad start and resilient Leicester open with a point. Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham debut ended in dramatic victory as Eric Dier grabbed an injury-time winner against West Ham at Upton Park. England Under-21 defender Dier, on his debut after a summer move from Sporting Lisbon, scored three minutes into injury time as a game full of controversy ended 1-0 to the visitors. Earlier, Spurs had Kyle Naughton harshly sent off for handball on 30 minutes, but Mark Noble missed the resulting penalty, and the game ended 10-apiece with West Ham defender James Collins also dismissed for a second bookable offence. Leicester's return to the top flight started with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Everton. Van Gaal rues United performance Louis Van Gaal was disappointed with his Manchester United side's disjointed display after Swansea won 2-1 to gatecrash his first Premier League match at Old Trafford. Ki Sung-yueng stunned the expectant United fans by handing the visitors a first-half lead, before newly appointed captain Wayne Rooney scooped an overhead kick home from close range to level the scores after the break. But just when United were expected to go on and secure the victory Gylfi Sigurdsson bundled the past David de Gea, who should have done better, to get Van Gaal's reign off to a losing start. Spurs have also held discussions with the Swans over a move for left-back Ben Davies, although sources at both clubs claim no fee has yet been agreed.
