That Gustavo Kuerten defeat is one of the biggest "if" in his career. I don't why very few talk about it
Aha!. 2002, Gustavo Kuerten and Leyton Hewitt lost in first round. Agassi pulled out with a wrist injury.
The last time both No. 1 & 2 seeds were out before the QF in the Australian Open was Lleyton Hewitt & Gustavo Kuerten in 2002.
Last 1 or 2 seeds to be bounced from Aus Open in 1st 2 rounds: 2002, Lleyton Hewitt (1) and Gustavo Kuerten (2) both lost in 1st round.
thank you! 😀 (except for when I write Gonzalo Kuerten instead of Gustavo) 😉

RIO OPEN PRESENTED BY CLARO HDTV 2014 Nadal Captures 62nd Title In Rio Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by ATP Staff | 23.02.2014 Nadal © RioOpen/FOTOJUMP Rafael Nadal wins his third title in Brazil. World No. 1 Rafael Nadal claimed his 62nd tour-level title on Sunday as he defeated Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 7-6(3) in the final of the inaugural Rio Open Presented by Claro hdtv. The Spaniard moved up to joint-seventh with Guillermo Vilas in the Open Era title leaders list. He is two trophies behind fifth-placed Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras. The victory in Rio de Janeiro earned him 500 Emirates ATP Ranking points and $316,400 in prize money. The 27-year-old Nadal is undefeated on Brazilian soil. He also won titles in Costa do Sauipe in 2005 (d. A. Martin) and in Sao Paulo last year (d. Nalbandian). This week marked the first time a World No. 1 had played in Brazil since 2001, when home favourite Gustavo Kuerten competed in Costa do Sauipe. Nadal had saved two match points to overcome countryman Pablo Andujar in an ent ...
GUGA The triumph of Alex Bilodeau reminded me of Gustavo Kuerten. Alex, the freestyle Canadian skier, repeated his performance from Vancouver in Sochi. He won gold in moguls again to become a two-time Olympic champion. But the real gold for us is the lesson of inspiration. His older brother Frederic has cerebral palsy. He was told that he would not be able to walk by the time he was 12. More than twenty years later, he is still walking. Alex said,"Everyday I feel very lucky to be a normal person that has the chance to go after his dreams, and he doesn't have the same chance. So out of respect for him I need to work. Frederic has the motivation to be a four-time Olympic champion." Guga the Brazilian became the number one tennis player in the world. He also was deeply effected by the daily struggles of his brother. Kuerton's younger brother Guilherme suffered from the prolonged illness of oxygen deprivation and consequently had irreparable brain damage. Guilherme, who died at the age of 28 in 2007, was bedr ...
Since our Lebanese juniors will be competing in Junior Davis cup and Fed cup soon, we will be posting a few interesting facts about this huge event! Did you know that many of the world’s leading tennis stars have taken part in Junior Davis Cup? This includes: - Jim Courier - Michael Chang - Goran Ivanisevic - Gustavo Kuerten - Marat Safin, - Roger Federer - Lleyton Hewitt - Andy Roddick, - Rafael Nadal - Bernard Tomic. So as you see it is a great honor to be part of this!!
With Even a lesser number of Grandslams that Federer, i consider Rafael Nadal a greater tennis player than Federer. While Federer was Conquering the world, he did it with virtually no competition. Most of the guys were in the evenings of the Careers. The Andre Agasi, Gustavo Kuerten, Andy Roddick, Marat Safin, Leyton Hewit and others. Yet Nadal has Had to compete with 3 guys at the top of their powers to be that high in the Grandslam winners' list. Novak Djokovic, Anday Murray and Federer himself have ensured that Nadal actually earns his Grandslams. That why when and if he eventually catches up Roger, that will only be a bonus. To me, he is already Greater than the swiss.

Champions paid tribute to generations past and present as an unprecedented gathering of No. 1s took place at the ATP Heritage programme's No. 1 Celebration on Friday night. The event, which took place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Emirates ATP Rankings. Ilie Nastase, who became the first ATP World No. 1 on 23 August 1973, was present to be honoured on the night, along with successors John Newcombe, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Marcelo Rios, Carlos Moya, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Gustavo Kuerten, Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The four decades' worth of No. 1s shared a stage - and some fond memories as well. View Photo Gallery Reflecting on what it means to hold the No. 1 ranking, Djokovic said, "It's definitely an ultimate goal for every athlete, not just tennis players. "Growing up, in early childhood, you are inspir ...
At 40th anniversary of ATP Rankings ,absolutely fantastic event! So great to see that 20 out 25 former world number 1s attended the event! It a shame that the creator of Brad Drewett couldn't see it.he will be missed by all of us. The picture I took with one of the greatest clay court players, and an absolute class person Gustavo Kuerten..
Andy Murray: A Legend? No. Roger Federer- 17 Grand Slam Titles Pete Sampras- 14 Grand Slam Titles Rafael Nadal- 12 Grand Slam titles Andre Agassi- 7 Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal. Not to mention: William Renshaw, Richard Sears, John McEnroe, Jimmy Conors, Gustavo Kuerten- 3 French Open titles, Rod Laver and Roy Emerson and Boris Becker. Novak Djokovic has six majors including four Australian Open titles. Andy Murray may have ended the drought, but he played a painful, sad and pathetic final. I expected a five-set match and felt cheated that it was over in three. I hate matches that are over in three. Djokovic had an off day and he wasn't in the match. I expected more from the final. I wanted Djokovic to win and I'm still upset that he lost. I have no interest in singing the praises of a man who was nothing more than lucky.
Nadal crashes at Wimbledon to ease Federer, Murray path. LONDON: Rafael Nadal suffered Wimbledon humiliation at the hands of Belgian world number 135 Steve Darcis on Monday, a shock first round defeat which instantly cleared the title paths of Andy Murray and Roger Federer. Journeyman Darcis clinched a 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 win to condemn the fifth-seed Spanish superstar to a first ever loss in the opening round of a major. It also came just two weeks after 12-time Grand Slam title winner Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon champion, had celebrated a record eighth French Open crown. The sensational result was the first time since Gustavo Kuerten in 1997 that a French Open champion had lost in the opening round at Wimbledon. Nadal's last defeat to such a low-ranked player was to Joachim Johansson, the world 690, at the 2006 Stockholm Open. The defeat, which followed Nadal's second round shocker at the hands of Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic at last year's Wimbledon, brought to an end his 22-match wi ...
Rafael Nadal: 1st player to win French Open then lose in 1st round of Wimbledon since 1997 (Gustavo Kuerten) SUPER MAJOR UPSET! Rafael Nadal (5) beaten by Steve Darcis in 3 straight sets 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 The King of Clay got to go home early, just could not overcome his allergy to grass, at least for 2013. Nadal became the first player in 13 years to win French Open Championship, and went down in the opening round of Wimbledon, the last one who did so was Gustavo Kuerten back in 1997.

Tennis Baghdatis falls early in Indian Wells World number 35 Marcos Baghdatis was the highest profile casualty on the opening day of the men's draw of the BNP Paribas Open, the Cypriot falling to Daniel Brands. Baghdatis, who reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells seven years ago, was dumped out 6-0 7-6(3) by his German opponent. Next up for Brands is Andreas Seppi of Italy. Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, twice a winner in Indian Wells, booked a date with 2012 runner-up John Isner after beating Lukas Rosol. The Australian took an hour and 35 minutes to secure the 6-4 3-6 6-1 win, during which he converted four of 12 break points. Hewitt won the title in 2002, when he defeated Tim Henman in the final, and a year later with victory over Gustavo Kuerten.
