So we train the Syrian rebels and send 300 advisers to Iraq, and this makes sense how? The Syrian rebels are overwhelmingly Sunni, and many are extremists. The Iraqi army is overwhelmingly Shi’ite. And the Sunnis and Shi’ites are engaged in a bloody conflict in both countries. So what are we doing? We’re making opportunities for arms makers and military contractors to make a bundle. That’s about all for sure we know we’re doing. The rest is a bit murky. Oh yeah, and Saudi Arabia as well as some of the Gulf Arab states are funding the Sunnis, and Iran is sending airloads of arms to Iraq. In other words, instead of starving the fire, everybody is feeding it. To read and hear the press you’d think the press understands it all, but when you add up what the press says you get zotz and zilch. We seem to be feeding a sectarian war we ignited. That’s the geopolitical take. We’re using tax money to give racketeers a chance to profiteer big-time, that’s the more realistic take.
ONE OF US Cover up campaign 12 JUN 2014: Mariam Saleh is part of a campaign in Qatar that was spurred by locals who are fed up with the way many tourists and visitors dress, especially as temperatures soar in the Gulf Arab nation. She avoids malls and outdoor markets on the weekends because the low-cut tops, sheer dresses and miniskirts that foreign women wear reveal much more than she would like her impressionable young children to see. The campaigners say Qatar is, after all, their country, and they should not be the ones feeling uncomfortable because visitors want to show some skin or dress like they would back home. The campaign is aimed at encouraging foreign women to dress more conservatively. However, it is not spearheaded by religious hard-liners, but by moderate locals who are concerned that a steady influx of foreigners is threatening to uproot their customs and traditions, which are intertwined with 1,400 years of Islam on the Arabian Peninsula. The campaigners say they are mothers and wives, b ...

Since his release, the 28-year-old from Hailey, Idaho, was reported to be in stable condition at a military hospital in Germany. The Taliban video shows Bergdahl in traditional Afghan clothing, the white salwar kameez, clean-shaven and sitting in a white pickup truck parked on a hillside. Saudi prince's rare bird hunt stirs outrage in Pakistan after massive loan LAHORE, Pakistan - Gulf Arab sheiks have long enjoyed close ties with Pakistan, but a Saudi prince's recent shooting spree, which culled more than 2,000 rare birds from preserves, has stirred outrage in the country, just as Saudi Arabia propped up its economy with a $1.5 billion loan. Pakistan's English-language daily newspaper Dawn broke the story this week based on a forest service report, "Visit of Prince Fahad bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud regarding hunting of houbara bustard," which detailed a three-week safari the prince and his entourage took. In all, the Saudi hunting party bagged 2,100 endangered houbara bustards. The prince, who owns a U.K.-built 270-foot motor superyacht and has a website depicting his philanthropic ventures, racked up the high score: 1,977 rare birds. The houbara bustard appears on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List as vulnerable to extinction, with Pakistan's population o ...
Gulf Arab states agree on measures to heal internal rift: Gulf Arab states took a step towards resolving a severe rift in the U.S.-backed alliance on Thursday by agreeing on ways to implement a security agreement they reached last year. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates withdrew their ambassadors from Qatar on March 5, accusing Doha of not abiding by November's agreement, which called for not interfering in each other's internal affairs. The unprecedented move, which analysts said was ultimately motivated by Doha's support for the Muslim Brotherhood, complicated Gulf efforts to navigate regional turmoil, particularly in Syria and Egypt. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) secretariat said in a statement that foreign ministers of the six-member body had met in Riyadh for a comprehensive review of measures used to implement foreign and security policies. "It was agreed to adopt the mechanisms that would ensure moving forward in a collective framework, and that the policies of any of the GCC ...

Dubai New Year's Eve Fireworks 2014 Dubai unleashes 500,000 fireworks to welcome in 2014 (and break a world record) This is the Dubai video everyone should be watching! Stunning Fireworks. Dubai has ushered in the new year with a huge fireworks spectacle which it hopes will break the world record for the largest fireworks show ever. The city’s coastline was lit up with a flying falcon made out of fireworks that moved across a massive man-made palm-shaped island alongside a countdown in fireworks. The backdrop to the fiery show was the world’s tallest tower, the 828-metre high Burj Khalifa. The six-minute extravaganza was said to include 500,000 fireworks from 400 firing locations, all synchronised by 100 computers from stations across the city. The fireworks display was slated to surpass the current world record held by another Gulf Arab state in just the first 60 seconds. Kuwait has held the record since last year when it fired more than 77,000 fireworks in a display that lasted more than an hour. Hit ...
At the behest of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan has made a strategic shift from its so far neutral position on Syria’s civil war – to one that portends to back the Syrian rebels and even provide them with arms through Riyadh. The shift will have serious regional consequences as it has already deeply antagonised Iran, which supports the Syrian regime, and angered Pakistan’s large Shia community which could prompt further sectarian conflict. It is also bad news for Afghanistan, where Pakistan-Iran rivalry may restart once US troops leave that country. Saudi Arabia is on a diplomatic offensive to woo all those Muslim states who have held a neutral position – to one where they fall in line with the Gulf Arab states that want an interim government in Damascus and the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad. All the Gulf states are petrified of Iran, fear its potential nuclear weapons capability and deeply distrust the Americans for their recent overtures to Tehran. However, if Saudi Arabia which practices Wah ...

8th February 2014There are believed to be as many as 1,000 armed opposition groups in Syria, commanding an estimated 100,000 fighters.   Many of the groups are small and operate on a local level, but a number have emerged as powerful forces with affiliates across the country or formed alliances with other groups that share a similar agenda. Here we look at the most prominent.   MAIN REBEL COALITIONS   SUPREME MILITARY COUNCIL OF THE Free Syrian Army         Leader: Brig Gen Salim Idris  The Free Syrian Army (FSA) was formed in August 2011 by army deserters based in Turkey, led by Col Riad al-Asaad. Its banner was soon adopted by armed groups that began appearing across the country. Despite this, the FSA's leaders had little or no operational control over what was happening on the ground in Syria.   The opposition's Western and Gulf Arab backers sought to encourage a centralised rebel leadership and in December 2012 a number of brigades affiliated themselves to a newly-created Supreme Military Cou ...
DUBAI, Jan 25 (Reuters) - The president of the United Arab Emirates has undergone surgery after a stroke and is in a stable condition, state news agency WAM reported on Saturday. It quoted the presidential affairs ministry as saying Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayn suffered a stroke early on Friday which "required doctors to perform surgery", adding his condition has since stabilised. It gave no further details. Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa is known as a pro-Western moderniser whose low-key approach helped steer the Gulf Arab state through a tense era in regional politics. He came to power after the death of his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan, in 2004. Analysts say the popular leader has helped maintain the ruling family's ties with important clans and leaders of the other emirates, helping the UAE manage the fall-out from Dubai's debt crisis in 2009, and has tried to balance ties with countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United States. He is the eldest of Sheikh Zayed's 19 sons. (Re ...

German FM Backs Inviting Iran to Syria Peace Talks German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Wednesday he backed Iranian involvement in a conference in Switzerland this month on ending the brutal nearly three-year-old war in Syria. "My position is that we should try to include the neighbors -- Iran too," he said after talks in Berlin with his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt. U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon did not include Iran in his invitations to 30 countries to the gathering, due to open on January 22. And the United States on Tuesday renewed calls for Iran to state that it would support a process in which embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad would ultimately step down. Iran, run by Shiite clerics, considers Assad its main Arab ally. Assad, a member of the heterodox Alawite sect, is fighting Sunni rebels who enjoy support from Gulf Arab kingdoms. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has suggested Iran could play a role in the Syria conference from the "sidelines." Tehran has scoffed at the suggestio ...
GULF NATIONS TO CREATE JOINT MILITARY COMMAND Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab neighbors wrapped up a summit meeting in Kuwait on Wednesday by agreeing to establish a joint military command, paving the way for tighter security coordination even as their regional rival Iran pursues outreach efforts in the wake of its interim nuclear deal. The six-member Gulf Cooperation Council also agreed to lay the foundations for a joint Gulf police force and a strategic studies academy, according to a summary of the group's closing statement carried by the official Kuwait News Agency. Taken together, the initiatives suggest that the U.S.-allied Gulf states are seeking to do more to ensure their collective security amid the prospect of warmer relations between Iran and the West. The Islamic Republic agreed last month to freeze parts of its nuclear program in exchange for some relief from Western economic sanctions. Many in the Gulf remain wary of Tehran's intentions. Iran Is The Real Loser In The Interim Nuclear Deal (-Analysis by Abu Hashim) On November 23rd 2013, President Obama termed the nuclear deal with Iran as historic, and it was the first time since negotiations commenced in 2003 that brakes were put on Iran’s so called nuclear weapons programme. He said,“Simply put, they cut off Iran’s most likely paths to a bomb.” The Jewish state does not share the same view and is opposed to the deal. The Jewish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, called the agreement a “historic mistake”. Other states most notably the Gulf countries are disappointed with the agreement.Sami al-Faraj, a security adviser to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), told Reuters that Gulf Arab governments felt slighted by the deal. “Iran is sitting at the high table,” he said. “We are left with the leftovers.” He added, “We will acquire more weapons. We are going to check if our shopping list is adequate to respond to this. We are going to rally other nations that are hurt by t ...

Secretary of State John Kerry Global leadership is based on two things – power and credibility. The United States remains the most powerful actor in the world. But last week, American credibility was shattered. Secretary of State John Kerry spent the first part of last week lying to Israeli and Gulf Arab leaders and threatening the Israeli people. He lied to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the Saudis about the content of the deal US and European negotiators had achieved with the Iranians. Kerry told them that in exchange for Iran temporarily freezing its nuclear weapons development program, the US and its allies would free up no more than $5 billion in Iranian funds seized and frozen in foreign banks. Kerry threatened the Israeli people with terrorism and murder – and so invited both – if Israel fails to accept his demands for territorial surrender to PLO terrorists that reject Israel’s right to exist. Kerry’s threats were laced with bigoted innuendo. He claimed that Israelis are too wealt ...
"Pressure is defined as force per unit area. It is usually more convenient to use pressure rather than force to describe the influences upon fluid behavior. The standard unit for pressure is the Pascal, which is a Newton per square meter. For an object sitting on a surface, the force pressing on the surface is the weight of the object, but in different orientations it might have a different area in contact with the surface and therefore exert a different pressure." - Physics But that pressure was never meant to be an end itself. It was meant to bring Iran in from the cold, provided it verifiably relinquished the ability to breakout with a nuclear weapon. “Just because regional actors see diplomacy with Iran as a zero-sum game — vanquish or be vanquished — doesn’t mean America should,” said Karim Sadjadpour, the expert on Iran at the Carnegie Endowment. But there is something else that goes without saying, but still needs to be said loudly: We, America, are not just hired lawyers negotiating a de ...

Since last year (with blessing) has been quietly negotiating with regimes regarding their R&D.
Any rational Iranian would tell you that the regime's nuclear ambitions are for the ideological and strategic interest of the regime, not the interest of the Iranian people. It's the tyrannical regime's policy to keep the Iranian people isolated from the west because the IRI is fundamentally anti-western and needs to keep its anti-western policies alive in order to survive ideologically. Any negotiations with the regime must include the issues of human rights and freedom in Iran while aiming at preventing the terror sponsoring tyrants from the capability of production and use of the world's most destructive weapons. So far, the western world and specially the Obama administration's weak, naive and misguided policies have done little to slow down or stop the regime from achieving its nuclear ambitions and any sign of appeasement from the western leaders will be perceived as sign of weakness and unwillingness to stop the regime. The regime knows that it can more comfortably crush any future pro-democracy up ...

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army targeted a religious court of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Reef (countryside of) Lattakia in Western Syria, where the Takfiri and Salafi Jihadists issued verdicts for the execution of civilians and defectors based on the religious rules of Wahhabism. The building of the ISIL religious court was attacked while it had convened for hearing the cases of 18 members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), FNA dispatches said. Several ISIL religious muftis were present at the court session which had convened in Al-Kabir village in Reef Lattakia. A car packed with weapons and ammunition as well as an armored vehicle were destroyed in the Syrian army attack. Several militant commanders, namely Saeed Tariboush, Abu Al-Majd Al-Baqdadi, Abu Omar Al-Tunosi and Abu Mohammad Al-Libi, were killed and wounded in the attack. Most valuable currency doesn't necessarily mean that the currency is better investment option or that it represents a better economic health of a nation. Please find below the list of expensive currency in their order of expensiveness: 1. Kuwaiti Dinar ( 1 KWD= 3.51 USD) In an area slightly smaller than New Jersey, lies the home of the world’s most valuable currency. Kuwait has been involved in talks this year with five other Gulf Arab monarchies to form a single currency. The Kuwait currency is currently pegged to the dollar. 2. Bahrain Dinar ( 1 BHD= 2.65 USD) A small island nation, approximately 3.5 times the size of Washington DC, Bahrain is geographically central in relation to its Persian Gulf neighbors. GMA NEWS: OCT. 22, 2013 US tries to calm Saudi anger over Syria, Iran By ARSHAD MOHAMMED and SYLVIA WESTALL, Reuters PARIS/KUWAIT – US Secretary of State John Kerry sought on Monday to calm rising tensions with Saudi Arabia, which has spurned a UN Security Council seat in fury at inaction over the crisis in Syria. Saudi Arabia rejected a coveted two-year term on the council on Friday in a rare display of anger over what it called "double standards" at the United Nations. Its stance won praise from its Gulf Arab allies and Egypt. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal hosted a lunch for Kerry at his private residence in Paris on Monday. US officials said Washington and Riyadh shared the goals of a nuclear-free Iran, an end to Syria's civil war and a stable Egypt. A senior State Department official told reporters after the lunch that Kerry cited the advantages of being on the 15-member body, which can authorize military action, impose sanctions and set up peacekeeping operations. IMF officials give Jordan some wiggle room on reforms International Monetary Fund officials relaxed some fiscal and other targets for Jordan under its $2 billion (1.25 billion pounds) loan program as the country struggles to deal with an influx of Syrian refugees and energy supply disruptions. The IMF officials on Saturday agreed to give Jordan about $258 million, its third tranche of aid under a three-year loan program started last year to help the Middle Eastern country speed up economic reforms and boost growth. The IMF's executive board must still sign off on the disbursal, which should happen in November. Jordan will get each subsequent chunk of cash if the IMF decides it has sufficiently complied with the conditions of the program, which include getting the government's finances in order and cutting subsidies for electricity and fuel. An IMF seal of approval can also help mobilize support from other donors. The IMF had previously set a target for the government deficit and losses at the state-owned ...

Qatar emir steps down, hands power to son DOHA (Reuters) - Qatar's emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani handed power on Tuesday to his son, Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim, taking the rare step for a Gulf Arab ruler of voluntarily ceding power to try to ensure a smooth succession. But the 61-year-old emir made no immediate mention of the public face of Qatar's assertive foreign policy, prime minister and foreign minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim, a veteran politician who had been expected also to step down. In a seven-minute speech aired on state television, the emir said it was time for a new generation to take over following his 18 years at the helm of the small, rich state. "The time has come to open a new page in the journey of our nation that would have a new generation carry the responsibilities ... with their innovative ideas," said Sheikh Hamad, reading a prepared text behind his desk, where Qatar's deep red and white flag was perched nearby. "I address you today to inform you that I will transfer powe ...
Kuwait hangs two Egyptian men for murder and rape Kuwait hanged two Egyptian men on Tuesday, one for murder and the other for abduction and rape, state news agency KUNA reported, in the second set of executions in the Gulf Arab state this year. Ahmad al-Beili was sentenced to death for the premeditated murder of two people and Hajjaj al-Saeedi was found guilty of raping five children, KUNA said, adding that 29 people remain on Kuwait's death row. In April, Kuwait hanged three men who had been convicted of murder in the first executions since 2007. Human Rights Watch, which campaigns against the death penalty, had urged Kuwait on Monday to halt the executions. "This new round of executions indicates that Kuwait is moving in exactly the wrong direction regarding the death penalty," Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at the rights group, said in a statement. ITO ANG KUWAIT NGAYON Heavy Pressures Behind Kuwait Crackdown On Foreign Workers Minister Calls For Foreign Population To Be Cut Sharply KUWAIT, June 12, (RTRS): The narrow, cracked streets of the district of Jleeb al-Shuyoukh, down the road from Kuwait’s main airport, would normally be bustling with Indian and Bangladeshi workers by late morning, just before the summer sun becomes unbearable. But since Kuwaiti police launched a series of raids about two months ago, saying they were tracking down illegal labourers, the streets are almost empty and many small businesses have closed their doors, residents say. In the last few months, authorities have deported thousands of mainly low-paid Asian workers from the Gulf Arab state for working without the correct visa or residency papers or for repeat traffic offences, according to local media and residents. A government minister has called for a reduction in the number of “excess” foreign workers in Kuwait. The oil-rich country relies heavily on foreign wo ...
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran votes on Friday in a presidential election unlikely to result in seismic shifts in its troubled relations with the West and Gulf Arab neighbors, but which could bring a softening
Gulf nations have relied heavily on the supply of cheap labor from Asia to build their vast housing and infrastructure needs. But their treatment of foreign workers has been criticized repeatedly by rights groups who have demanded that governments repeal oppressive labor laws. “Any Gulf government that seeks to significantly reform its labor system will face tremendous opposition from its national (employers) who benefit greatly from legal and regulatory shortcomings,” said Nicholas McGeehan, researcher for Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain at Human Rights Watch, a US-based nongovernmental research and rights advocacy group. “This problem is eminently fixable, but as yet no Gulf states have shown the necessary political will and the exploitation of migrant workers is as bad as ever.” Most blue-collar workers in the Gulf Arab states are migrant laborers hired on a contract basis from South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, who have come to the Middle Eas ...

Yemen's main oil pipeline attacked, pumping stopped SANAA (Reuters) - Attackers blew up Yemen's main oil export pipeline on Friday, halting the flow of crude, the government and industry sources said. "Subversive elements" in Serwah in central Maarib province had blown up the pipeline, which leads to the Red Sea, at dawn on Friday, the Defense Ministry said in a statement. The Arabian Peninsula state, which relies on crude exports to replenish its reserves and finance up to 70 percent of budget spending, has suffered frequent bombings of its main oil pipeline since an uprising broke out in 2011. Sabotage of oil pipelines and transmission towers in Maarib had increased dramatically in recent days, the ministry said. The pipeline had been pumping around 125,000 barrels per day (bpd), an industry source told Reuters. Yemen's stability is a priority for the United States and its Gulf Arab allies because of its strategic position next to oil exporter Saudi Arabia and shipping lanes, and because is home to one ...

For example throughout the crisis, Egypt’s disgraced and overthrown dictator Hosni Mubarak endorsed everything the US didand showed no feelings atall for the sufferings of the Iraqi people. Rewarding Mubarak for his support, the US waived a seven billion dollar military debt; Western donors provided another US$2 billion and creditor governments promised more. Joining hands, the Gulf Arab countries donated US$6 billion – Saudi Arabia gifted US$1.5 billion – besides pouring billions more into the Egyptian central bank in addition to providing job opportunities to Egyptians in the Gulf. Syria: Iranian pilgrims abducted in Damascus 04-08-2012 Forty-eight Iranian pilgrims were kidnapped from a bus in the Syrian capital on Saturday, their embassy's consular chief in Damascus told Iran's state television. "Armed terrorist groups kidnapped 48 Iranian pilgrims on their way to the airport," Majid Kamjou told the IRIB network, which gave the report on its website. "There are no reports about the fate of the pilgrims. The embassy and Syrian officials are trying to trace the kidnappers," he said. Hundreds of thousands of Iranians travel each year to Syria to visit a Shia pilgrimage site, the Shrine of Zaynab, in Damascus. Several dozen Iranian pilgrims and engineers were abducted in December and January, with most being released months later. The abductions threaten to influence the geopolitical situation in Syria, with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday describing the conflict as a "proxy war" between Iran, Russia and China and the West and Gulf Arab states. Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Wednesday that Jerusalem is "committed to doing everything it can in order to stop Iran from going nuclear." I am "fully aware of the difficulties and complexities involved in preventing Iran from attaining nuclear weapons," Barak told graduates of the IDF National Security College. Israel is facing "difficult and fateful decisions" in weighing methods to stop Iran's controversial uranium enrichment program, he said. Iranian officials contend that their program has only peaceful goals, but officials in Jerusalem, the West, and Gulf Arab states say Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons. Barak said "having to deal with the challenge" of an Iran possessing nuclear bombs "would be many times more complex, dangerous and costly, both in terms of human life and in terms of resources, than a preemptive strike." "But a look at the facts leads us not only to avoid reconsidering our calculations, but to move on our intended path with greater confidence," he added. Barak added: "the Iran ...
