The unofficial beginning and end of Summer is Memorial Day to Labor Day. I have put together a little "Summer in Cades Cove" slideshow video. It contains several images from the past 3 months of this year all within Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains. Tip: I have found by hovering over the video and clicking HD and the double arrow at the bottom, the images are clearer and you can view full screen. Runtime is about 5 minutes. I had a great Summer and I hope you did too. Enjoy your Labor Day and now bring on Fall. Sharing is allowed, encouraged and much appreciated. Video was created using Windows Movie Maker. Music is from Ken Burns "The National Parks" soundtrack.
It's that time of year again! Elk are extremely active now through early October in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. REMEMBER: Feeding, touching, disturbing, and willfully approaching wildlife within 50 yards (150 feet), or any distance that disturbs or displaces wildlife, are illegal in the park. SMN spent this afternoon with Louise Best, wife of late renowned Southern Appalachian banjoist Carroll Best. In 1956, when she was 18 years old and newly married, Louise, alongside, Carroll, family and friends, were recorded in Waynesville, North Carolina by legendary "song catcher" Joseph Hall, who was hired by the National Park Service to capture the voices, stories and music and the folks in the Great Smoky Mountains. Hall traveled around the rural mountains in the late 1930s recordings music and people of Southern Appalachia, only to return numerous times throughout the decades following, always recording, always fascinated by what he came across. Those recordings were recently compiled into a new collection being released by the Great Smoky Mountains Association. An official album release party will be Sept. 19 in Lake Junaluska. Such a treat to chat with her about Carroll, who is regarded as one of the all-time great banjo players...check it out below...stay tuned for a full feature in next week's p ...

Blackberry Farm Preps to Debut New Wellness Center In the last few years, Blackberry Farm has established itself as a sought-after destination in Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains. Now, a new wellness center is set to further enhance the luxury hotel beyond its celebrated food and wine programs. Slated to open in June, the new Wellness Center & Spa is nestled in a meadow at the edge of Blackberry’s original property, landscaped with herb gardens and pools. Like the hotel itself, the spa is designed in a rustic-chic style with reclaimed materials. At Blackberry Farm, wellness is defined as making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life, toward a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing. Experts will lead the programs, which will focus on fitness, health, and a balanced, sustainable lifestyle. Beyond the farm-inspired spa treatments, there will be steam rooms, lounges, one-on-one consultation areas, a classroom, and a juice bar. You’ll experience this lifestyle in every corner of the farm ...

Local photographer, Dave Gafney will show his Landscape and Wildlife Photography at The Kinderhook Group for the month of March as part of First Fridays Artswalk! Crawford Square, 137 North Street, Pittsfield, MA. Dave Gafney spent fifteen years working as an interpretive naturalist for the National Park Service. He had the privilege to live and work in some of our most beautiful National Parks including Yellowstone, Zion, Isle Royale, Great Smoky Mountains and Death Valley. It was only “natural" that this experience would lead him to a passion for landscape and wildlife photography. Originally from the Berkshires, Dave currently resides in Lee.

Let's take the time out to wish Pro Football Hall of Famer Lynn Swann a happy birthday today! Lynn Curtis Swann (born 03/07/1952) was born in Alcoa, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains near Knoxville. The Swann family moved to San Mateo, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area when Lynn was two. As a youth, Swann was raised in neighboring Foster City and attended Junípero Serra High School, where in addition to playing football he was a track star, leaping 24' 10" in the long jump. At the 1970 CIF California State championship meet, Swann won the state title, defeating future Olympic gold medalist Randy Williams. Swann attended the University of Southern California, where he was an All-American on the Trojans football team. He played under legendary coach John McKay, including the 1972 undefeated and national championship season. McKay said of Swann, "He has speed, soft hands, and grace." He completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Relations in 1974. In 1993, he was inducted i ...

The more pictures I see about our scenery roads, and National Parks, the more I realize that I live in a beautiful country. The fact that our country has some shortcomings, doesn't mean that I can't appreciate the beauty of it. From Sierra Nevada, to the Great Smoky Mountains. From the tropical areas, to the continental areas. From the Appalachians, to the Great Plains, to the Rocky Mountains, to the deserts, Great Canyon. From thousands of small towns/cities, to the global cities. So many options! Diversity and the people is what developed our country from nothing to a global economic powerhouse. That economic engine is what moves our military forward. We have Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and all those that supply our military. As long the people serve and protect, the beauty of our country is preserved. I want to thank all veterans, and to those that recently joined the military for protecting the values of our country.

Oct. 25th color report from GSMA: Fall colors are now at peak between elevations of 3,000 feet and 6,000 feet in the Great Smoky Mountains. In the spruce-fir forests at the very highest elevations, the few deciduous trees are now past peak. Colors are especially brilliant along the upper reaches of Newfound Gap Road. At elevations below 3,000 feet, where the forest is rich with maple, oak, hickory, and other hardwood trees, colors will likely peak during the last week of October and the first few days of November. The fall color display is very good to excellent this year with some good reds among the rich golds. Suggested drives include Little River Road, Cades Cove, the Foothills Parkway East (near Newport and Cosby), the Foothills Parkway West (near Townsend), Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, and Cataloochee Valley.
It's 52 degrees right now here in the GA Foothills at Dahlonega and 28 at Beech Mountain,NC which is just a little higher in elevation than Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains. Probably in the low 20's at Clingmans Dome. The winds were also around 50 MPH earlier in the higher elevations. Finally feelin' like real fall weather!

What a wonderful evening I have had with my dear ol' college friend, Martha Kent Martin, and her husband. Martha was chosen for an Art Internship for the month of Oct. in the Great Smoky Mountains and they're enroute to there. Her etchings and jewelry are exquisite. We've laughed and talked and looked at the stars (they live in the city and these Meadows of Dan stars and Milky Way are putting on a show tonight!). And, hey, I cooked supper - a big pot of barley vegetable soup (love those Vermont gourmet soup packets!), oatmeal wheat bread from the Bread Basket in Floyd - and my OWN rhubarb apple sauce...with a bottle of local wine. It's like being transported back a couple decades.

Finding water in the wilderness is essential to survival, especially when it comes to living off the land or traveling over land vast distances. How to Find Water Near Snow Capped Mountains and Forest Many mountain ranges offer multiple sources of water, most will be found in creeks and rivers. A few mountain ranges are dotted with small lakes -- lots of lakes. The Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, and the Appalachian Mountains will have many sources of fresh water, as well the Catskill Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains. Many parts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California will also have sources of fresh water -- though as you get further south toward Mexico, you enter much drier regions. Survivors who find themselves in mountain ranges like the Rockies, Cascades or Sierra Nevadas only have to look for mountains peaks high enough for snow (or simply that have snow on peaks year round), and then look down a specific mountain for crevices in the terrain, often signify ...
I had a great surprise last night at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop. No, it wasn't the fact that the band next door sounded remotely country, it was that we had visitors from Porterville, California. The Bartlett family, Doug, Joyce, Kristen, and Tiffany, found me cleaning the front door window; Kristen thought that was pretty funny that I was cleaning anything because she inherited my room when I retired from Pleasant View. They had been to the Great Smoky Mountains area of East Tennessee, and had driven over to Nashville to spend a couple of days. There are great Pleasant View School connections, as Kristen taught there with me for several years, but is now at Buckley School in the Burton District. Oh, by the way, Mr. Buckley was my principal while I was a student at Doyle School in the early 60's, at the same time that Mr. Caulk was my 5th grade teacher. Joyce's sister, Patty Wilson, and I worked together for about 30 years together before she retired. Patty's husband, Cecil, was one of the great chapero ...

Blind NC man seeks to make history by hiking 'Mountains to Sea' RALEIGH — A North Carolina man is making history yet again, by courageously hiking thousands of miles across the state on the 'Mountains to Sea' trail. From the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks, Trevor Thomas and his guide dog are trying to become the first blind or handicapped partnership to finish the trek. Thomas has already become the first blind person to complete a solo hike across the entire Appalachian Trail. For the average person, a 1,000-mile hike may seem unbelievable. Yet for someone who is blind like Thomas, many might call it impossible. "This will be a first for a blind person and a first for a guide dog." With Tennille by his side, Thomas is defying odds, battling the cold, the heat and the traffic; breaking records and stereotypes one step at a time."We're normal people we can do a whole lot of things if people just give us a chance,” said Thomas. After loosing his sight as an adult, Thomas decide to tackle long di ...

White-nose syndrome has likely invaded Great Smoky Mountains
I have been thinking about my mountains a lot lately. People sometimes ask why we go there so much and why we love it so much. That is not an easy question to answer for me.  It is my happy place, but it is much more than that. Yes, I love Disney and it is an extremely happy place for me too, but I can handle only going there every 2 or 3 years, but if I had to wait that long to go to the Great Smoky Mountains, I would go absolutely insane. Why? Well, it is the place where I am happiest, feel closest to God and am the most relaxed. But it is more than that. It is hard to put into words all that the mountains mean to me, but I can surely try :) It is the place where we have taken our family vacations for longer than I can remember. In fact, the first time I went to "my" mountains was before I was even born. My mom was pregnant with me when my parents went there on their honeymoon and I have heard the story all my life about how she sent my Dad out in the pouring rain in the middle of the night in Gatlinbu ...

Kisimul Castle on an island in Castle Bay, Barra, Scotland, stronghold of the MacNeills for more than a thousand years, home to my fictional MacNeill family who emigrate to the Great Smoky Mountains in 1750 and populate the TUCKASEEGEE CHRONICLES_ The MacNeills were said to be descended from the Irish King "Niall of the Nine Hostages" and were wealthy pirates for centuries. They were proud of the fact that the English were never able to find their caches of plunder they had hidden in sea caves throughout the Hebrides, so of course I worked that heritage into my novels.

Richard Pearce Hunnicutt - A good friend and I didn't even know he died until today. I spoke to him shortly before he passed and didn't even know. His books on American Armor are the gold standard and can never be duplicated. Hunnicutt, Richard Pearce 84 June 15, 1926 April 29, 2011 Our Dad, Richard Pearce Hunnicutt was born amidst the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains in Asheville, N.C., to James Ballard Hunnicutt and Ida Belle Black. During the Great Depression the family lost their home and had to move in with relatives. Despite the hardships, Dad excelled in school, especially chemistry. When World War II came, he altered his birth certificate and enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1943. In October 1944 he joined the 7th Infantry Division and participated in the invasion of Leyte where he witnessed the filming of one of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's famed "returns" to the Philippines. April 1945 found him at Okinawa's Kadena Field where he met Ernie Pyle, who singled him out for a photograph beca ...

Finding No-Hassle Advice Of Forests of the Night Patrol woman Charlotte Monroe has cop instincts. Scratch that. There isn't a name for the intuition she possesses, something that borders on psychic, an ability to read people's faces and body language like the morning headlines - to size up their intentions and act before they do. But none of that prepares her for the stranger who shows up on her doorstep with a chilling warning for her husband, a mysterious note scrawled in Cherokee hieroglyphics and a promise of things to come: You're Next. The warning becomes more ominous as Charlotte and her husband, Parker, discover the complex truth about this man, including his position on the FBI Most Wanted list and his connection to their family. When Charlotte's deeply troubled teenage daughter runs away to join the charismatic outlaw, she follows them to the spectral mists of the Great Smoky Mountains - and to the beating heart of a 150-year-old blood feud that will endanger everything she loves and challenge e ...

Happy New Year everyone. It's never too early to start planning a great vacation in the Smoky Mountains.
Well, we've taken in three shows, checked out three or four different shopping areas, met with group sales at the hotel, talked with the Visitor & Convention Bureau and got a planning packet, tried a couple different restaurants, found the Catholic Church for Mass this morning, and have enjoyed the jacuzzi twice so far. We hope it is sunnier tomorrow and if so we'll head into the Smoky Mountains. The Christmas lights are awesome and the Christmas shows have been great. perhaps we should have a trip in December to Pigeon Forge! What do you think?

Out to Eat at McCloud Mountain Restaurant in LaFollette I can tell you about it, but you have to see it to believe it, and my residents will agree. The McCloud Mountain Restaurant and Lodge is located on a 1,300 acre tract of land at an elevation of 2,700 feet, at the top of the Cumberland Mountains and a few miles to the northeast of La Follette, Tenn. From the top you can get a breathtaking view of the valley below, Norris Lake, House Mountain, Clinch Mountain and the Great Smoky Mountains and Knoxville, Tenn. There are sightseeing tours of the many natural wonders such as Chimney Rock and natural bridges. It has a heliport with two landing pads if you care to fly in instead of driving any of the many winding roads that climb to the top. With soaring cliffs and majestic arches, this is an inspiring place to visit. There's nothing fancy about the food; it's a stick to your ribs kind of food. As you can see from our pictures, the view is spectacular. Our visit was perfect for viewing the fall folia ...
