Great Grandfather & Civil War

Grandparents are the parents of a person's own parent, whether that be a father or a mother. Every sexually-reproducing creature who is not a genetic chimera has a maximum of four genetic grandparents, eight genetic great-grandparents, sixteen genetic great-great-grandparents, etc. A civil war is a war between organized groups within the same nation state or republic, or, less commonly, between two countries created from a formerly-united nation state. 5.0/5

This is one of an occasional series of posts about my Great Grandfather and his experience in the Civil War. The War ended on this date in 1865 for my Great Grandfather, Private Robert Bartholomew Bigger of the 42nd Tennessee Volunteers. According to the terms of surrender to Major General William T. Sherman of that part of the Confederate Army commanded by General Joseph Johnston, Bigger was granted a parole. Records in the National Archive show that “R. Biggers, Pvt., Co. K, 4 Consolidated Reg’t Tenn. Vols,” appears on a Muster Roll of officers and men paroled in accordance with the terms of the surrender in North Carolina. The roll was not dated, but showed Bigger paroled on May 1, 1865, and listed him on extra duty with a supply train. Perhaps it was via the wagons of the supply train that he made his way back to his home in Clarksdale, Tennessee. Bigger’s Confederate 42nd Tennessee unit was re-organized several times during his time in the Rebel army. Bigger’s first battle in the Civi ...
Jordan and his grandmother, Trisha, did an outstanding presentation of Civil War artifacts in Jordans classroom today. Every attendee got to take home an authentic field bullet dug by Trisha's immediate family, and identified by Stan Hadden, Jordan's Great Grandfather. Many from the Battle of Port Hudson and around Harper's Ferry.
My Plantagenet 2nd Great Grandfather, John Nathan Hittson, Sheriff of Palo Pinto County, Texas; first and richest of the Texas and Colorado Cattle Kings; refused to fight in the Civil War in order to protect the families of Palo Pinto County; 1st cousin of Nathan Bedford Forrest; buried in Denver, Colorado. My husband is buried next to him, as I will be. His life is my inspiration and working on PhD.
