Great Comet

A Great Comet is a comet that becomes exceptionally bright. There is no official definition; often the term will be attached to comets that become bright enough to be noticed by casual observers who are not actively looking for them, and become well known outside the astronomical community.

Comet ISON Set to Survive Its Pass By the Sun - While most Americans are looking forward to November 28 this year to (over)indulge in turkey and gratitude, astronomers have another reason to count down the days. That’s when Comet ISON, the Great Comet of 2013, will reach its closest approach to the sun (1.7 solar radii from the solar surface, or about 700,000 miles). Only then will they know for sure whether the comet will survive its close encounter and go on to provi...

A SUNDAY MUST READ ! JUST POSTED MY BRILLIANT AND ERUDITE FRIEND , QUITE EXELLENT ! White washed White house because I used comet. Comet Ison with bleach so far does not look as if it will scrub us from the Earth. We still have the President for that. “On March 6, John Bortle, a highly regarded amateur observer who has viewed hundreds of comets spanning over five decades, wrote this assessment of Comet ISON: "The much hyped Comet ISON is not evolving in the fashion we had earlier anticipated. Rather than slowly but steadily gaining in brightness, it has stagnated at near 16th magnitude for a couple of months now. After experiencing an interval where the coma's degree of condensation grew quite strong, the object threw out an unexpected strong but short tail that has persists right down to today. However, following this episode the coma subsequently faded, became less condensed and smaller, all bad signs regarding the "health" of the comet's nucleus. Whether ISON becomes a Great Comet next fall, or just ...
Fishtank mentioned in TIME: Total Immersion In more new shows, the passive theatergoer is passe by Richard Zoglin "Making a musical out of War and Peace might seem like a fool's errand. All those pages. All those subplots. All those Russian names. Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, Dave Malloy's cheeky pop-rock version of (at least a portion of) Tolstoy's novel, helps out on the name front with a cute opening number that introduces the characters with primer-like directness ("Helene's a *** Anatole's hot, Sonya's good ..."). The show gets playgoers into the mood by seating them at tables in a faux Russian supper club and feeding them borscht and blini. And it scatters the action everywhere: on ribbonlike stages that snake through the club, in the aisles, even right at your table. Immersive theater is suddenly the rage, and no passive theatergoer is safe. Along with Natasha, Pierre (housed in a Manhattan tent), Here Lies Love, David Byrne's terrific new musical about Imelda Marcos, is staged on . ...

Discovered on this day in 1861, comet C/1861 J1 which became known as the Great Comet of 1861, by John Tebbutt of Windsor, New South Wales, Australia. It was visible to the unaided for about three months, and the Earth passed through part of its tail.
On this day in history, 7th March... 1530 - Pope Clement VII issued a bull forbidding Henry VIII to marry again and threatening excommunication if he did. 1544 - Executions of Germaine Gardiner, nephew of Stephen Gardiner, and John Larke for denying the royal supremacy. 1544 - Execution of Robert Singleton, clergyman, for treason at Tyburn. Singleton served Thomas Cromwell as a Preacher and Anne Boleyn as a chaplain before becoming Arch-priest of St Martin's-le-Grand in Dover. 1556 - One of the days on which the Great Comet, or the Comet of Charles V, was seen and recorded by Paul Fabricius, mathematician and physician at Charles V's court. 1574 - Baptism of John Wilbye, composer and musician, at Diss in Norfolk. 1594 - Death of Sir John Burgh, soldier, from a rapier wound suffered in a duel with John Gilbert, stepbrother of Sir Walter Ralegh.
2013: The Year Of The Comet: Researchers Say Ison Comet May Be Brighter Than The Moon. A recently discovered comet that is rapidly approaching the Sun could outshine the Moon in 2013, researchers think. The comet may even be visible in daylight, as the Great Comet of 1680 was. It’s expected to be visible towards the end of the year, roughly from October to the following January. “The recently discovered object, known as comet ISON, is due to fly within 1.2 million miles (1.9 million km) from the center of the Sun on Nov. 28, 2013 said astronomer Donald Yeomans, head of NASA’s Near Earth Object Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. As the comet approaches, heat from the Sun will vaporize ices in its body, creating what could be a spectacular tail that is visible in Earth’s night sky without telescopes or even binoculars from about October 2013 through January 2014.” With such a bright object in the night sky during the latter part of the year, it may somewhat drown out what ...

Comets, comets everywhere! Maybe Comet ISON will be the Great Comet of the 21st Century?
Few sights in our sky are more impressive than that of a "Great Comet." Often appearing as bright (or brighter) than the brightest stars, and with bright tails that may span a considerable distance across the nighttime sky, such objects can be truly spectacular and awe-inspiring.
bright new comet has been discovered headed inbound towards Earth and should put on quite a show about a year from now. The fact that the orbits are so similar seems to suggest Comet ISON and the Great Comet of 1680 could be related or perhaps even the same object.
The Truth Behind the Scenes: Is newly discovered Comet ISON C/2012 S1 related to the 'Great Comet of 1680'?

During the year of the passing of the Great Comet the YungWon was born bringing tremendous joy to the lives of the Squaw and the DumFok'er. However, Won's elation was short lived, as when the nurses brought the YungWon's birth certificate in we noticed that it had one minor mispelling on it. They had mispelled my first name, transposing two letters... there it was typed plain as day in big black bold print: Brain DumFok'er. ...the Squaw read it, looked at me with a straight face and lovingly said, "if you want out, nows the time because that's certainly NOT your name on the birth certificate." I thought the nurses in there at the time were gonna die laughing. DOH! :-0 no respect... I tell you... no respect.
paragraph from my work. page 38. unfinished. The seismologist who coined the term seismology, Robert Mallet’s first intensive earthquake research involved the catastrophic Great Neapolitan Earthquake at Padula, Italy, on December 16, 1857 – the day astronomer E.E. Barnard was born. Barnard discovered Barnard’s Star which is our nearest stellar neighbor after the Alpha Centauri star system. In the first half of 1857, Mohorovičić, Hertz, and Fleming were born and the cataclysmic Tokyo earthquake killed 100,000 Japanese. On the anniversary of the quake, Nicolas Louis de Lacaille died in France. Lacaille defined and named 14 of the 88 sky constellations. One of the 14 is Constellation Carina, location of blue hypergiant Eta Carinae - one of the most massive and brightest stars in our Milky Way. Eta Carinae became the night sky’s second brightest star one month after the perihelion and near-Earth approach of the Great Comet of 1843 - the comet which inspired Alvan Clark's interest in astronomy. On th ...
It's National Fruit Cocktail Day and Apple Pie Day in the food world. Seems a bit early for fresh Apple Pie but Fruit Cocktail is always in season. You can find great Apple Pie at Shoo Fly in West Seattle. You can find Fruit Cocktail in a can. Add it to Jello for a special treat for Mother's Day. It's also Frog Jumping Day--another of those fitness day--get some exercise playing Leap Frog with your pals. Soil Stewardship Sunday is a day to thank your personal deity for dirt.
