Everything you need to know about today in history. Great Stuff. 180th day of 2013 - 185 remaining Saturday, June 29, 2013 GOETHALS DAY No one had a clue that the baby boy named George Washington Goethals, born on this day in 1858 in Brooklyn, NY, would someday change the way the world did business. As an adult, Mr. Goethals became army officer and chief engineer over thousands of workers who completed the passage we know as the Panama Canal. The engineering marvel took eleven years to complete at a cost of $337 million. The U.S. President at the time, Theodore Roosevelt, said it was “the greatest task of its own kind that has ever been performed in the world.” The United States government maintained control and payed rent to the Panamanian government until December 31, 1999, when it relinquished control of the canal to Panama. We wonder if even Col. George W. Goethals knew how important the Panama Canal would be, both strategically and in commercial trade throughout the century. Events June 29 1860 - ...
Twenty-five years ago, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall took a momentous trip from the fictional African nation of Zamunda to the foreign land of Queens, New York, and the result was a larger-than-life comedy film called Coming to America. An all-star cast and crew united to produce the movie, which became a box office hit and enduring classic. On its milestone anniversary, the people behind the feature are reflecting on its imprint in cinematic history. The evolution of Eddie Murphy’s movie career “It feels like it just happened,” executive producer Leslie Belzberg tells theGrio. “I love the idea that Coming to America is still successful, that people still remember it and want to see it. Often, in my peer group and when I meet in the entertainment industry, they’ll still refer to that movie.” “We were doing something that was slightly unprecedented,” she continues. “It’s very gratifying to know people enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed making it.” For his Highness, Eddie Murphy Making C ...

Ken smiles and speaks! There’s your headline. Not that the Old 97's playing three nights at the Brooklyn Bowl isn’t great. Or that each night they are performing one of their first three albums isn’t even better. But Ken Bethea (lead guitar) actually breaking out in a wide smile and telling the audience that it was weird to play all the songs from Hitchhike to Rhome in a row and that they’d only done this once before is one of those rare and unforgettable moments.  rtb and I got to the Brooklyn Bowl early enough so that we could stand right up at the stage. The Brooklyn Bowl is a wonderful venue with great sound, however, when you are leaning against the stage you are hearing more monitors than mains (and it is very LOUD up there) so that position is great for views not the best for sound. I did hear everything okay. And we discovered that at an Old 97’s show there are a lot of very friendly people near the stage. And they will all be there tonight and tomorrow, so we’ll be hanging out with t ...

June 28 Most Favored: The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, French philosopher and writer whose novels inspired the leaders of the French Revolution, 1712-1778 Every true man, sir, who is a little above the level of the beasts and plants does not live for the sake of living, without knowing how to live; but he lives so as to give a meaning and a value of his own to life. LARS ULRICH TALKS ABOUT DEEP PURPLE.Makowski-Wordsmith has posted an interesting interview with Lars where he talks about being a Deep Purple fan. The full interview is below.. Peter: I’ve got to see and interview Metallica quite a few times over the last few years and one of the joys of being around them is that they are still star struck music fans. Being a huge Deep Purple disciple it was a pleasant surprise to find that Lars and Kirk are huge fans of the band. Both myself and Lars saw Deep Purple Mk3 on their first European tour in December 1973 (he saw the first show in Copenhagen and I caught them a few days later in Brussels at the Forst National) and are bonded by the experience of catching the new line up in their prime. To celebrate the release of Deep Purple’s 19th studio album - Now What? - here is an interview I did with Lars last year where he talks about being a fan of the band, seeing them for the first time, favourite album tracks, songs he’d like to cover, the late, great Jon Lord ...

I just attended Bobby Blue Bland's home going celebration today. I know now, that Bobby is resting in peace. It was so much love for him in the building, you could feel him smiling down. I saw so many of my colleagues. It was great to see everyone celebrating Bobby and his life! Otis Clay moved the whole church and gave me chill bumps when he sang " When The Gates Swing Open"! I feel very honored to have known and to have worked with Bobby Bland, he 'IS' a TRUE American treasure! Bobby was a long time friend of my dad Lonnie Brooks for over almost 50 years. Because of their friendship, Bobby embraced me and my brother Wayne. He would always encourage us to keep the Blues alive. Bobby was just as happy as all of us when Lonnie was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame, that was the type of person he was. Bobby contributed so much to ALL music with his smooth, velvet, soulful and classy voice. He recorded so many great classic songs! He also influenced so many other artist, including myself! Earlier this yea ...
Another song that is two songs into one. Randy Bachman wrote a short song called "No Sugar Tonight". When he presented the song to Burton Cummings and the record company, he was told that the song was too short. Bachman and Cummings expanded the song by adding to it a song Cummings had written, "New Mother Nature". The song was originally written without the "in my coffee" and "in my tea" wording. The band was ordered to alter the lyrics to make the sexual connotation less obvious.

Don't get me wrong, the kids are doing great, but picture the social development level of a some 4 years olds, duking it out with each other, multiply that times a factor 5 and and then add no knowledge of English reprimands or "we are in public" facial expressions and that's the level we had to deal with in multiple little "spats" the kid's have had with each other. Especially the one last night. Won't go into the details on the multi hour resolution, but thank the Lord it did resolve, complete with heartfelt asking for forgiveness to each other in the morning. The other major challenge is the most spectacular combo of whining for everything from internet barbie movies to everything on every aisle in the store to iphone Angry Birds along with an almost OCD fixation on asking ...
MUSIC It's amazing what a difference two years makes. In June of 2011, I packed into a sweaty club in Silver Lake to see an up-and-coming glitch producer by the name of Baths (né Will Wiesenfeld) perform a triumphant home-town gig. Preceded by similarly buzzy beatsmiths like Shlohmo and Groundislava...
What to do in Door County this Weekend! June 28-30.
Everyone from Pitchfork to The Wall Street Journal likes Baths, but he's too busy to notice.
To: Buffalo Board of Education From: Carl Paladino Date: June 26, 2013 Cc: Everybody Re: An Open Memo Demanding The Resignation Of Superintendent Pamela Brown My first motion as a member of the Board of Education (BOE), at the first regular meeting of the newly elected BOE when it is seated after July 1, 2013, will be to immediately seek the resignation of Superintendent Pamela Brown, failing which the BOE will begin proceedings to terminate her employment contract for cause, for fraud and breach of fiduciary duty. The people of Buffalo unequivocally proclaimed that they've had enough of the incompetency of the Board of Education (BOE) and its Superintendent, whose lack of any discernible leadership skill and pathetic and amateur performance in her short tenure has created a systemic chaos evidenced by the current morale crisis and the breakdown of the basic structure of the system. Pamela Brown has failed because she was never competent to lead a School District of 30,000 students. The BOE touted her Ph ...

The world is a fascinating place and is becoming more culturally diverse all the time. We use the term minority to categorize a group of people who are different from what we consider the norm. Minority is loaded word. In my understanding it is a label that means less than. This is far from true. [.

As we all know James Gandolfini passed away recently. I, among many, was a big fan. I, of course, was also a big fan of The Sopranos, possibly the best show ever on TV in my estimation. One day I was to learn that the recording of my song "Where's the Money?" was to close the episode "Favorite Sun." I am very sorry to see "Tony" go and very proud to have been part of an American institution. Mr. Gandolfini, R.I.P. Sincerely, Dan Hicks
Hi Folks, So I don't usually do much in the way of touring, and when I do, it isn't usually in the US. But I figured I'd give it a shot around this next album release. We were trying to figure out what would cover the most ground in the two-week span we have for shows, and this is what we came up with. I know it's missing a lot of territories, but it's what made the most sense for the time frame. So hopefully it's close enough to those of you that are interested in coming out, and if not, I will try to make the next time I play in the US cover different ground. I just can't say when that will be. Anywho, I hope everyone is well, -Ben **Tickets go on Sale Friday June.28th** 9-Oct Sixth Street Synagogue 10-Oct World Café Live 11-Oct Le Poisson Rouge 13-Oct The Sinclair 15-Oct Linocln Hall 16-Oct Varsity Theatre 19-Oct The Biltmore Cabaret 20-Oct Tractor Tavern 21-Oct Mission Theatre 23-Oct Great American Music Hall 24-Oct Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever

Strictly my opinions: I don't care about any Kardashian or their babies. I don't know why anyone does. I don't care what the Olsen twins do. I don't care about anything Tori Spelling does. I don't care what Paula Deen thinks about anyone else. I don't care if John Travolta and Tom Cruise are straight or *** I'll think of more, I'm sure. Thanks for reading. Have a nice day.

June 26th, 1893: Big Bill Broonzy was born Lee Conley Bradley, in Lake *** Arkansas. "Big Bill" was one of Frank Broonzy (Bradley) and Mittie Belcher's 17 children. His birth site and date are disputed. While he claimed birth in Scott County, Mississippi, an entire body of emerging research compiled by blues historian Robert Reisman suggests that Broonzy was actually born in Jefferson County, Arkansas. Broonzy claimed he was born in 1893 and many sources report that year, but after his death, family records suggested that the year was actually 1903. Soon after his birth the family moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where Bill spent his youth. He began playing music at an early age. At the age of 10 he made himself a fiddle from a cigar box and learned how to play spirituals and folk songs from his uncle, Jerry Belcher. He and a friend named Louis Carter, who played a homemade guitar, began performing at social and church functions. These early performances included playing at "two-stages": picnics where w ...

Former Sleater-Kinney frontwoman Corin Tucker is gearing up to release her first solo album. The album will be called '1,000 Years' and will be released through Kill Rock Stars in October. Some of the tracks were conceived for Twilight: New Moon soundtrack, but as Tucker said in a presser, 'They didn't work for the movie, but I kept them anyway. The themes work exactly. The monsters, beasts and demons, all those things working on you.' The album is expected to be a more mellow affair than anything in Sleater-Kinney. It sounds like she could have taken her own advice and no longer be full of 'rock 'n' roll fun', rather full of folky string-drenched keyboard fun. The record features Seth Lorinczi from The Golden Bears and Sara Lund from Unwound and was recorded at Little Golden Book Studios. Watch Tucker live as she hits the road for a brief west coast tour: OCTOBER 7 - Aladdin Theater, Portland, OR 8 - Showbox, Seattle, WA 9 - WOW Hall, Eugene, OR 11 - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA 13 - El R ...
