From the Garros 2014 blog. "And that's a wrap folks! WHAT A MATCH. That's the first three-set final in 13 years, and just two minutes shy of the all-time Roland Garros women's record of 3:04, set by Steffi Graf and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Sharapova was brilliant in clinching her fifth Grand Slam title in her fourth straight three-set match, while Halep was equally impressive in her first ever major final. That match will take a lot to beat in terms of quality and drama. But no doubt Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will bring a similar quality to the court for tomorrow's men's final! We look forward to you all joining us then :)

It's not a simple match. It's a Final, in Roland Garros, the 2nd home of Rafa Nadal. Rafa has started his clay season not well, losing early in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. He has improved week by week, round by round. I think this match between Nadal and Djokovic is the most important from Us Open 2013. From here, 4 wins by Djokovic, that has the chance to complete the Career Grand Slam. If Nadal will win, he'll remain at n. I think it's THE match. And with this thought, I wish you a good night!
Maria Sharapova wins the French Open; it's her 5th Grand Slam title and 2nd at Roland Garros
In tennis, no surprises there in the men's singles final at Roland Garros as the top two seeds will battle each other for this Grand Slam title. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are no strangers to each other with this being their 3rd matchup in a tournament final this year alone and their 42nd career meeting. And there's going to be plenty at stake in Sunday's final. Besides the French Open title, obviously the winner of this match will also claim the World number 1 ranking.

Andrea Petkovic, Simona Halep win PARIS -- Andrea Petkovic and Simona Halep completed the French Open semifinal pairings with straight-set wins Wednesday, and one of them will be in a Grand Slam final for the first time. Petkovic, a 28th-seeded German, beat 2012 French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy 6-2, 6-2. The fourth-seeded Halep defeated 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, also 6-2, 6-2. "I have to say, today I was in a real zone. I didn't think at all," Petkovic said. "I was just focused on what I had to do." Neither Petkovic nor Halep has ever played in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. But they will meet on Thursday with a spot in the final against either Maria Sharapova or Eugenie Bouchard on the line. Petkovic was first to complete her match on a wet day at Roland Garros. And although she had some trouble holding serve at the start of each set, her groundstrokes consistently landed near the lines, many of them for winners. "I had a very good game plan from my coach. It didn't work in ...

Federer: ''I could have done better... I couldn't figure it out.'' Player Bios Sunday, June 1, 2014 Roger Federer did his best to be philosophical after he failed to reach the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the first time in ten years. The 17-time Grand Slam champion lost in five sets to Ernests Gulbis before a shocked Philippe Chatrier Court. “What’s done is done,” he said. “You can’t always explain why you lost. I’m not happy. I missed too many opportunities. I did not play like I wanted to play. I had so many opportunities. A lot of regrets here now. But Gulbis did a good job of hanging around. It was big for me to win the first set tiebreaker. Clearly coming back in that second set was crucial for him. I should have put him under more pressure from the baseline, but I just couldn't figure it out for a long time. That's a disappointment. Maybe I lost focus in the fifth for just a second. “Stakhovsky [in last year’s Wimbledon second round] was a shock because I did not expect to los ...
Novak Djokovic continued his bid for a first Roland Garros title, which would complete his set of all four Grand Slam championship titles. The second seed improved to 22-0 in sets against Jeremy Chardy, when he beat the Frenchman for the ninth straight time 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon for a place in the third round. “I managed to play some good tennis and [I am] already feeling like I'm improving my game as the tournament progresses,” said Djokovic. “I managed to make him play an extra shot. I managed to stay solid from the baseline and I think that forced him to make a lot of unforced errors, which definitely helped me to win in straight sets." Djokovic has a 33-match winning streak against French opponents dating back to November 2010 at the BNP Paribas Masters (l. to Llodra). Djokovic will next play No. 25 seed Marin Cilic, a winner of two ATP World Tour titles this year, who fired 49 winners - including 19 aces - past Tobias Kamke in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win mid-afternoon. “I'm going ...
Champions Williams and Nadal face tough opposition at Roland Garros 2014 The world's top ranked tennis players compete at Roland Garros, also known as the French Open. This year, reigning champions Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal face tough opposition from the likes of the Chinese Li Na and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka who both respectively won the Grand Slam Australian Open in January. Roland Garros is the second of the four Grand Slam tournaments on the annual tennis calendar and the premier Clay Court tennis tournament in the world.
SERENA, Venus Williams HAVE BEEN OUTCLASS FROM THE French Open: Serena and Venus Williams could have met in the third round at Roland Garros, but, surprisingly, neither made it out of round two on Wednesday. After Venus Williams was eliminated by Slovakia's Anna Schmiedlova in three sets on Chatrier Court to start the second round, top-seeded Serena Williams was stunned by Spain's Garbine Muguruza. Schmiedlova, in her second French Open and fifth Grand Slam event, pulled off a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Venus for her first-ever win against a top-30 opponent. The shocker then came about an hour later on Court Lenglen, as Muguruza took full advantage of an abnormally sloppy Serena in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. Muguruza's best result in five previous Grand Slam events was a fourth-round loss to Agnieszka Radwanska at the Australian Open earlier this year. It wasn't Serena's earliest exit at Roland Garros. She was bounced in the first round two years ago by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano, then rebounded by completely ...

Kristina Mladenovic stuns Li Na PARIS -- Another day on the clay at the French Open, another reigning Australian Open champion bites the red dust. Li Na lost her first Grand Slam match since winning the title in Melbourne, falling to Kristina Mladenovic of France 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 on Tuesday. The loss came a day after men's Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka was eliminated in the first round. Li, who won the French Open in 2011 and was seeded second this year, ended up with 37 unforced errors on a cool and overcast day at Roland Garros. Mladenovic had only 25 errors. "Nobody say if you No. 2 in the world you have to win all the matches. I mean, this is tennis," Li said. "I think doesn't matter who plays today against me; I always lose the match today because I don't think she ... put a lot of pressure [on] me. I think today just I gave it away." In 2011, Li became the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam title. On Tuesday, she said she wasn't feeling quite like her usual self. "I don't think I'm doing ...
Rafa thru to 2nd round Vamos! Defending champion Rafael Nadal made a strong start in his bid for a ninth Roland Garros title, improving to a 60-1 mark at the clay-court major with victory over American Robby Ginepri on Monday. Nadal raced through the opening set in 29 minutes, after winning the first game on a Ginepri double fault on his fifth break point chance. Ginepri held his first three service game of the second set before the top seed pulled away for good, rolling through the last 10 games to clinch the 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 win. "I won this round, but it was a bit difficult because of the weather," said Nadal, "but it was very important for me, because it gave me the opportunity of having two days' break so that I can practise. That's always positive. When you win, you're always happy. Of course, as always, I had ups and downs, and I could have played being a bit more aggressive." Ginepri, a former World No. 15 who is currently ranked No. 279, was playing in just his third Grand Slam tournament since unde ...

The French Open always presents a unique test. The second major of the season is the only one contested on clay, which requires a different skill set. It also starts a very busy stretch that continues through Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Players are focused on setting a positive tone they can build from in the months ahead. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were the stars who accomplished that goal last year with triumphs at Roland Garros. It was Nadal's eighth French championship and Williams' second. Both the Spaniard and the American return with hope of defending their titles. There are 127 other players on each side looking to end those dreams. Today 15.3o Moscow time!Good luck Nole! In the second round, "Masters" in Monte Carlo Novak will compete with the winner of the match Benoit Paire (France) - Albert Montanes (Spain, Q). "Last year, my main goal was" Roland Garros ". I was constantly thinking about it. Won't say it is bad or good, or that I do not want to win this year's tournament. Of course, I will do my best to win, but there is still time. Now I want to devote all my attention to the tournaments in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome - three very major competitions on the ground. I want to perform successfully on them to gain confidence before the "Roland Garros". Last year I tried to do my best for this - psychologically, physically and emotionally. But actuly it did not help much. Now I ,ve come to the tournament with a different mindset. There are many important matches ahead, a lot of important events, and only when the time comes, it will be possible to talk about the tournament "Grand Slam" - quoted Djokovic official tournament website.

ROGER'S RECORD RUN AT THE SLAMS Roger Federer will begin his record 57th consecutive Grand Slam tournament appearance Tuesday at the 2014 Australian Open. China Open: Serena struggles, Djokovic and Nadal sail through 01 Oct 2013 , Beijing, October 01, 2013 Top seed Serena Williams stumbled her way into the third round of the China Open on Tuesday while men's favourites Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal powered through their opening matches. The world number one Williams at times appeared agitated during her 6-4, 7-5 victory over Italian Francesca Schiavone, shouting at herself over lost points. The American only showed rare moments of her trademark power-play, gaining the upper hand in the first set via a mistake from her opponent, who double-faulted on set point. The top seed Williams was forced to become more aggressive in the second set after her serve was broken in the first game by Schiavone, Italy's first Grand Slam winner, at Roland Garros in 2010, and the current world number 50. As the competition intensified both players' tempers threatened to boil over, with Williams ranting and Schiavone smashing balls into the barriers at the side of the court in ...

Five-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams shrugged off her bitter rift with Maria Sharapova to rack up her 32nd successive win with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Luxembourg's Mandy Minella in the first round on Tuesday. World number one Williams came into her title defence opener at the centre of a storm for her controversial comments on a US high school rape case and for her dig at Sharapova's romance with her own ex-boyfriend, Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov. The 31-year-old took out her frustrations on the hapless Minella, the world number 92 who has never defeated a top-30 player, let alone one of the calibre of Williams, whose French Open title three weeks ago took her majors haul to 16. Victory was also her 75th in her last 78 matches, a run that stretches back to her shock first round departure at Roland Garros in 2012, the worst Grand Slam exit of her career. Tuesday's 32nd successive win took her to within just three of the record set by older sister Venus in 2000. “I never think about the run, I ...

For Tennis fans only Those who think Tennis this generation isn't competitive, please read it. Based on stats. A look at the weak era theory from an in-depth, numerical only, point-of-view. I would like to preface this by saying - I do not support the weak era theory, nor do I reject it. I am only trying to understand it by putting the numbers here. This is purely mathematical, and there is no conjecture here. The math here - How manyGrand Slams did the player beat on his way to winninga Grand Slam? For example, when Nadal won Roland Garros this year, he beat an owner of 6GS (Djokovic), hence he 'beat' 6 Grand Slams. Let uscalculate this for Federer, Rafa and Nole as well. Note: The number considered is the number of Slams won by the playerat that point in time only. Federer: Wimbledon 2003: 0 AO 2004: 2 (Hewitt), 1 (Ferrero), 1 (Safin at that time) = 4 W 2004: 2 (Hewitt), 1 (Roddick) = 3 USO 2004: 1 (Costa), 8 (Agassi), 2 (Hewitt) = 11 W 2005: 1 (Ferrero), 2 (Hewitt), 1 (Roddick) = 4 USO 2005: 2 (Hewitt) ...

American proves too much for Maria Sharapova claiming her second title at Roland Garros and 16th Grand Slam overall.
Serena Williams has claimed her 16th grand slam title at Roland Garros.
Congratulations to Serena adding her 16th Grand Slam title today in Paris in a well contended final against Maria. A few impressive numbers that I have to mention - its been 11 years since Serena won at Roland Garros, she's 74-3 since last year, her winning streak is now 31 matches and at 31 years old she's the oldest female to win the French Open and a major since 1990. Those are some cool numbers to be proud of. And given Serena's great physical strength she's likely to add more in the next few years. And if were talking numbers, also another incredible win for the 35 year old Bryan brothers in the mens doubles today, setting a new record at 14 for the most doubles majors.
Serena Williams wins the French Open with a straight sets victory over the 2012 champion, Maria Sharapova. With her first singles title at Roland Garros since 2002, Williams now has 16 Grand Slam titles.
Fourth seed David Ferrer reached his first Grand Slam final on Friday at Roland Garros, ending French hopes for a home champion by defeating sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2.
Nadal beats Djokovic in semi. Rafael Nadal has lost just once in his 59 matches at Roland Garros - a fourth-round defeat to Sweden's Robin Soderling in 2009. Waiting for 8th grand slam.
About weeks ago,I wrote concerning Nadal versus Djokovic... Beating Nadal on clay in ATP masters is different from Roland Garros... Only one man has ever done it in Robin Soderling.Roger Federer beat him in Rome Masters some years ago buh ended being whitewashed in three straight sets. So, Mr Djokovic, come back next year Congrats to the most underrated world number 5(David Ferrer) alias ''the break''...His first grand slam final...You deserve it after this years even players ranked below him v bn to d final (Del Potro,Tsonga,Berdych) King of clay versus the break... The only but is that Ferrer has never beaten Nadal on Clay with a 19--4 record against him,he almost did it in Madrid Masters before he was destroyed in Rome .Almost doesn't kill a bird. Buh congrats anyways
Nadal Overcomes Djokovic, Through to the French Open Final:- Rafael Nadal has reached his 17th Grand Slam final, well on course to becoming the first player ever to win the Roland Garros eight times. The Spaniard had one of the strongest challenges
I’m glad I taped today’s semifinal between Nadal and Djokovic because there are many points of the match that I will want to watch again. What an epic 5 set battle again from these incredible athletes! Nadal and Djokovic pushed each other, like so many times before, to their limits - both mentally and physical - in a match that could have gone either way at the end. Few words can capture the determination, guts and talent these 2 players showed, if you didn’t get a chance to watch, try to catch a replay. And now Nadal, who will be trying for his record 8th trophy at Roland Garros, plays a first time Grand Slam finalist 31-year old Ferrer. Ferrer, who played a superb tournament so far, kept his calm and deservedly beat Tsonga who unfortunately could not continue his great run in front of his home crowd. Tomorrow I’ll be watching closely the results of the 2 German hopefuls that made it to the junior finals: Antonia Lottner for the girls and Alexander Zverev for the boys.
Rafa Fans, Unite - Nadal vs Djoko Fri June 7th 7PM at Roland Garros. Excerpt from Roland Garros Website: Djokovic certain of historic win over Nadal By Kate Battersby: If Novak Djokovic tires of tennis in the near future, maybe he should go into marketing. His words ahead of his semi-final against the seven-time champion Rafael Nadal make it clear he’s selling a big idea, to tennis and to himself. And the idea is this… not merely that he can beat the Spaniard, but that he will do so, and thus become only the second man in nine years to defeat Nadal on the Roland Garros clay. There could be no more glorious way to complete the world No.1’s career Grand Slam. "I know the game plan,” announced Djokovic. “I'm going to be confident and step into the court with self-belief. I'm going to win - that's the mindset." To Rafa Nadal - Vamos! Prove Novak to be better in marketing than tennis in the future!

Grigor Dimitrov has long been lauded as one of the up-and-coming players to watch on the ATP Tour, with the young Bulgarian being both cursed and praised with a comparison, first made several years ago, of his game with that of the great Roger Federer’s. Such a comparison, whilst of course flattering, brings with it a whole heap of pressure and for several years it seemed as though Dimitrov was struggling to live up to the lofty expectations that others had placed on him. This year, however, has seen Dimitrov finally break out of his shell and start performing like a rising star. A finals appearance in Brisbane, where he lost a hard-fought match against Andy Murray, was followed with a stunning upset of world number one Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Masters and now at Roland Garros the 22 year old has made his first ever third round at a Grand Slam. Dimitrov also pushed Nadal to 3 sets at Monte Carlo, which is not an easy thing to do at one of the Spaniard’s favourite stomping grounds. Today’s remat ...

After the match against Simon : 1. Fourth player in the history to win 900 ATP tour matches. Only Jimmy Connors(1243), Ivan Lendl(1071), Guillermo Vilas(923) have more victories. 2. 58th victory at Roland Garros, equaling the record of Nicola Pietrangeli who won the tournament in 1959 and 1960. 3. 36th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. Jimmy Connors is next in the list on 27. 4. 40 Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances, the second most of all-time behind Jimmy Connors who has 41 to his name.
I'm feeling so cheated - Marina Erakovic loses her third round match against Sloane Stephens at Roland Garros in three sets (2 1/4 hours) - and she probably should have won the third set 6-0 instead of losing 6-3! :-( Way too many unforced errors. I feel more pain because she's my "triplet" sister - same birthday! At least our other triplet (Aga Radwanska) is still going... However, it's still Marina's best singles result at a Grand Slam, so congratulations on that, at least...and she'll jump 20 spots or so in the rankings. Now for her doubles - shame that she'll only get about an hour's break. Let's hope for more rain... :-)

TENNIS Swiss icon Roger Federer was an easy second-round winner Wednesday at the 2013 French Open. The second-seeded former world No. 1 superstar dismantled helpless Indian Somdev Devvarman 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 in a brisk 82-minute affair on Court Lenglen. Devvarman was a two-time NCAA champion while attending the University of Virginia. Federer boasts a men's-record 254 Grand Slam singles match victories and is now third on the men's Open-Era list with 56 wins at the French. Federer's third-round opponent will be quality Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who upset the Swiss legend in Rotterdam earlier this season. Meanwhile, fourth-seeded David Ferrer and sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also secured spots in the third round. On the women's side, world No. 1 superstar and former champion Serena Williams, Australian Open titlist Victoria Azarenka and last year's Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska were a trio of winners Wednesday at Roland Garros. The sizzling-hot 2002 French Open winner Williams won her 26th straigh ...

A piece from Sam her site again, not all. Stosur admits it’s been far from an ideal build-up, but her affinity for the claycourt Grand Slam has her thinking anything is possible. “I’m certainly not writing myself off and I’m not going to say I’m the favourite either,” Stosur told AAP. “But I love playing at Roland Garros and it’s the tournament where I’ve had my best results. “I don’t see why this year couldn’t be any different if I keep doing the right things.” While Stosur’s major breakthrough came at the 2011 US Open, it’s in Paris where she’s proved a consistent threat. A semifinalist in 2009 and runner-up the following year, she again reached the Final Four in 2012 before a frustrating loss to outsider Sara Errani. Stosur took stronger form and more match practice into last year’s event – she had a 21-10 win-loss record compared to 14-10 this year. But form hasn’t always been a pre-cursor to French Open success as her performance in 2009 on the back of a 10-9 sta ...
The 2013 French Open begins on Sunday with Round 1 play, as the 2nd Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year takes center stage on the red clay of Roland Garros in Paris. Novak Djokovic sits in the top stop on the men's singles side, and will face Belgium's David Goffin in Round 1. The man who defeated Djokovic in last year's final to capture the 2012 French Open title, Rafael Nadal, begins the tournament ranked 3rd, and will face Germany's Daniel Brands in Round 1. Roger Federer is the tournaments number 2 seed, and Spain's David Ferrer, at number 4, round out the top 4 spots. Americans Sam Querrey and John Isner are ranked number 18 and 19 respectively. Isner faces Carlos Berlocq, of Argentina, in Round 1 while Querrey takes on Slovakia's Lukas Lacko. On the women's singles side, Serena Williams holds the number 1 spot and she faces Anna Tatishvili, of Georgia, in Round 1. Williams sister, Venus, comes into the French Open with the number 30 seed. Maria Sharapova, who won her 1st French Open championshi ...
Roger Federer: undercooked or rounding into form? This is a unique situation for the Swiss, who has never gone through such a barren stretch to start a season ever since he first joined the main circuit in 2001. Indeed, he has only made one final so far, at last week's ATP Masters 1000 in Rome. Has he left it too late to round into form in time for Roland Garros? "You don't expect to win that easily against Roger," said no less an observer than Rafael Nadal, who was as incredulous as most after beating Federer 6-1, 6-3 in the final in Rome, the last major tournament before the French Open. The man with 17 Grand Slam titles to his name has turned the start of the 2013 season into a race against the clock, having chosen to ease his way into the year by playing just six tournaments between January and May. This also backfired somewhat when he got knocked out early on in Madrid in his first appearance on clay. Having shed blood, sweat and tears to get back to the No.1 slot in the world in 2012, Federer has ce ...

TENNIS- Li Na blazes past Sharapova in the Australian Open: Li Na crushed Maria Sharapova with a magnificent display to power into her second Australian Open final. Sharapova had broken a tournament record in conceding just nine games in reaching the last four but she was overwhelmed by the Chinese whose heavy-hitting, high-risk game reaped maximum reward. In the face of blazing winners from all angles, second seed Sharapova had no answer as Li romped to a 6-2 6-2 win. "I always play well here," Li said after a 93-minute masterclass. Li, who reached the final here in 2011 and a few months later become the first Asian player to win a Grand Slam crown at Roland Garros.

Roger Federer: A look at the records the Maestro can break in 2013 Here’s a glance at the feats the world no.2 can accomplish in 2013: 1. Appearances at the Grand Slams: If Roger plays in all four Majors; he will join Jonas Bjorkman for a joint third position all time with 58 appearances at the Slams. 2. Successive Slam Appearances: If he turns up at all four, he will tie Wayne Ferreira for the most number of consecutive Grand Slam appearances with 56. 3. Grand Slam quarters reached: By the end of the year Federer can go past Jimmy Connors who sits pretty at the top with 41 quarterfinal showings at the Slams. 4. Aussie Open crowns: If the emperor triumphs this year, he will have five titles at the Grand Slam of Asia Pacific, making him the first man to do so in the Modern Era. 5. Roland Garros match victories: Presently he is at no.2 with 54 wins at the clay Major and can be no.1 if the maestro reaches the semis yet again. That would take him to at least 59 triumphs in Paris, one ahead of Guillermo Vila ...
Thanks again to Grand Slam Tennis on Wii for making me achieve my dream of winning a Grand Slam title. Today, I defeated Ana Ivanovic, Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova and Justine Henin to win Roland Garros. And now, I have to rest my sore right arm.
“Are you watching this?” That was, roughly speaking, the content of at least four text messages that I received on the afternoon of June 28th. I had briefly left my TV, and ESPN’s Wimbledon broadcast, behind to keep a doctor’s appointment. This is a risky proposition for a tennis writer in the middle of a Grand Slam; you never know when a bolt will come out of the blue, Razzano-like, and turn your working day upside down. But I thought I was in luck on this day. What surprise could possibly come out of the second-round match between Rafael Nadal and Lukas Rosol, which was up last on Centre Court? Granted, Rafa hadn’t looked good in his first-round win over Thomaz Bellucci. But after his near-perfect spring and Roland Garros title, he was still my pick to win his third Wimbledon. And Rosol, ranked No. 100 in the world, seemed to have made his road easier by knocking out Ivan Dodig, a player who had beaten Nadal the previous year. Thus I had no clue what those mysterious texts were about. It wasn ...
John Mcenroe spoke in "Mats Point" on the season of Roger Federer : "He is incredible. I think we all thought the negative and he was not going to win more Grand Slam titles, I think Wimbledon represented his best chance to achieve that but the guy he likes tennis so much! so he likes to be on the court and this is one of the keys to his success, he is able to digest large losses ... he has managed to do this year. When Wimbledon came he has to raise his game when he had to, he was able to do so again. the guy is truly amazing. I think he can beat Djokovic best of five sets, but it clearly depends surface! Roger has defeated Novak at Roland Garros, Wimbledon ago I think it is really the king with Pete Sampras ... they are the biggest in history! There is a little more but it happens to find the path to success on grass and I think it will be present. it is clear that more older you get more it becomes difficult, I hope that some can compete with Roger but he showed that it was amazing physically, he is ra ...
The Grand Slam® Development Fund was originally established in 1986 with an initial donation of £100,000 by the Championships at Wimbledon. The Fund has become an effective means for the International Tennis Federation, using Grand Slam contributions, to fulfil its mandate to develop competitive tennis worldwide through its affiliated National Tennis Associations. From 1986 to 1990, the four Grand Slam tournaments (Wimbledon, Roland Garros, the US Open and the Australian Open) jointly donated about $500,000 each year. Specifically, the Fund is designed to encourage the establishment of both junior and professional tournament circuits which in turn, provide opportunities for a greater number of players to compete and to assist players directly, either through teams or travel grants, to gain international competitive experience so that more nations will be represented in the mainstream of international competition. Other projects which offer a unique opportunity to develop the game in member nations, such ...

SKIER VONN "INSPIRED" BY FEDERER Olympic downhill skiing champion Lindsey Vonn recently took to the internet to reveal why she is inspired by World No. 2 Roger Federer both as an athlete and as a person. “The way he keeps fighting back to dominate his sport personally inspires me,” explained Vonn. “I think he's legitimately one of the greatest athletes of all time.” The American skier had backed Federer for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year award, which was announced today. The 2012 ATP World Tour season saw Federer wrest back the No. 1 South African Airways ATP Ranking from Novak Djokovic’s grip for a time, with the year-end honours going down to the wire, and win his 17th Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon (d. Murray). At 30, going on 31, it was a feat that most impressed Vonn, who had met with Federer at Roland Garros. It is not just Federer’s tennis skills that have impressed Vonn. Recipient of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for the eighth time in this year’s ATP Worl ...
After so many wrote her off after Roland Garros will win her 15th Grand Slam today?!?
Seven Doomed Men by Pete Bodo Rafael Nadal needs scant promotion as the start of the French Open bears down on us. Any doubts about Nadal's future as the man with a stranglehold (instead of that familiar, playful bite) on the French Open trophy were laid to rest these past few weeks. All that talk about Novak Djokovic pulling the clay out from under Nadal's feet? Oh, how quaintly 2011 it was. That particular threat has been dismissed as if by one of those wicked Nadal forehand cuts that ends with a helicopter flourish. So here we are again, with absolutely nothing to suggest that Rafa won't sashay out there next week and inflict a painful whipping on the first of the seven doomed men he will dismiss en route to his seventh Roland Garros title. That would break his tie with Bjorn Borg (six titles in eight appearances), and also allow Nadal to build on his superior winning percentage. We used to marvel at the fact that Borg lost just two matches in those eight tournaments at Roland Garros (as if that weren' ...

Nadal’s £241,000 watch stolen while he was winning title By Eurosport | Tramlines – 19 hours ago A Richard Mille watch (Nadal's actual stolen watch not pictured)When Rafael Nadal stormed to the French Open crown on Monday, he should have been enjoying one of the sweetest days of his life. Not only had he just won a record seventh title at Roland Garros, but in doing so he also ended a run of three consecutive Grand Slam final defeats at the hands of arch-rival Novak Djokovic. Yet even for megastars, life has a way of kicking you in the teeth when you least expect it: while the Mallorcan was finishing off his rain-delayed match, a thief was busy in his hotel room stealing his watch. A watch, furthermore, that was worth an incredible £241,000 - that is £14,000 more than the average house costs in the UK. The one-off Richard Mille timepiece (similar to the one pictured above) had been lent to Nadal for the duration of the tournament - presumably so that the 11-times Grand Slam champ could give the fir ...

The no. 1 in the world, Maria Sharapova, comes back to Spain and Equelite After the victories in Wimbledon (2004), US Open (2006) and the Australian Open (2008), the Russian player had just one Grand Slam left, the French Open. with this victory, she gets her own Career Grand Slam, a collection of tournaments that really few players had got during their tennis life. Moreover, she had become, once more, the top 1 in the WTA ranking. Maria, since she was very young and also during the last years, had been training at the Academy next to the team leaded by Antonio Martínez Cascales, Juan Carlos Ferrero's coach in Alicante and after her current triumphs, she decided to come back and rest to our Ferrero's Hotel in Bocairente and to her former residence, the Equelite Academy where we organized a dinner for her to celebrate her victory in Roland Garros and no. 1 in the world. We also met Juan Carlos Ferrero and Nicolás Almagro with us in the dinner. Both of them gave her a present to congratulate her because o ...

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have been on a permanent collision course over the past year and now will meet in their fourth straight major in the Roland Garros final on Sunday. The contest will show whether or not the Spaniard has pushed his game to a height where he can stave off the ever ambitious Serbian, who has taken him down in the last three Grand Slam finals. However, Djokovic has never upended Nadal in Paris, falling to him in straight sets on three successive occasions from 2006-2008. Something big is going to happen on Sunday to either Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, two men in a league of their own pursuing enormous slices of tennis history.
