2014 GRAND NATIONAL. Her are my 3rd lot of 5 horses running Saturday and their chance... DOUBLE SEVEN... Double Seven is a relative youngster at the age of eight, but he’s a most progressive staying chaser and can’t be ignored. In the Munster National he beat subsequent Cheltenham hero Spring Heeled. The form is in the book. 8/10 ROCKY CREEK... has long been considered a Grand National type, but was going to miss this year’s renewal in favour of the Gold Cup. but now he gets his chance at Aintree. Lacks experience, but is a young, up-and-coming stayer. 6/10 BURTON PORT... hails from a stable who know how to win this race, however not in the sort of form needed to win this 3/10 THE RAINBOW HUNTER... Progressive handicapper from a former Grand National winning stable. Interesting outsider. fell last year when travelling well. 6/10 COLBERT STATION... Unseated his rider 12 months ago when well fancied for Grand National winning trainer. Former winner of a Paddy Power Chase so a classy horse on his best ...

On this day in 1977, racehorse Red Rum won a historic third Grand National championship at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England, after taking home victory in 1973 and 1974 and finishing second in 1975 and 1976. Red Rum remains the most successful horse in the history of the Grand National, which is considered by many to be the world’s toughest steeplechase race.Red Rum, a bay gelding, was foaled on May 3, 1963, at the Rossennara Stud in Kells, County Kilkenny, Ireland. His moniker was derived from the last three letters of the names of his dam and sire, Mared and Quorum. Early in his racing career, it was discovered Red Rum had a debilitating bone disease; however, trainer Ginger McCain, who bought the horse for Noel Le Mare, trained him on the sand and in the sea water at Southport, Merseyside, which apparently cured Red Rum of his foot problem.Red Rum was scheduled to run in the 1978 Grand National, but on the morning of the race it was determined he had a hairline fracture. The horse, age 13, was ...

I have been reading Peter and Jane books with Sean today. Old style, with those beautiful illiustrations by J.H Wingfield. The paints are out, the boys are out - and I am about to see I can paint a half decent red-setter...whilst doing a roast... I cant watch 'Come Dine With Me' anymore - not after the Grand National one yesterday, with the sound down - I realised how insane it was to waste my time after seeing every scene laced with fake horse heads. should be watching the sopranos, not this - but looking forward to painting today... and relaxing. Thank you Sean for the beautiful Orchid. love you so much. xxx

This guy is one of my heroes. Sam Waley-Cohen has won a Gold Cup, two King Georges, been second in the Grand National and will be heavily backed in next Saturday's big race from Aintree. Three weeks later he'll be aboard FOYLE in the Maryland Hunt Cup and should have a great chance. Modest and engaging he is always generous in crediting others, most especially has father, with his success. And.he's friends with Pippa. His father Robert worked in New York City for a time and hunted with Essex when Jill Slater was Master. Robert Waley-Cohen also rode in several Virginia point to points.

This was my first assignment since I signed up Talent Management - it was really great fun and I can't wait for the next one! The job was an advertising video for William Hill, promoting the Grand National horse race, filmed at Kempton Park Race Course. A bunch of mature ladies behaving disgracefully - that's what we had to do! We all got on really well and had a terrific laugh. We were all dressed up in old lady clothes, given walking sticks, zimmer frames, with one lady on a mobility scooter. The idea was we had to 'race' to the finish along part of the course including a fence - no, we didn't have to jump it! There was a lot of 'old lady' growling, nicking of walking sticks etc in an effort to get to the finish first (with a great deal of laughing in between takes). We had to keep doing retakes to enable the camera man to get shots from different angles, with close ups and wide shots too. The guys were happy to include some of our wacky ideas to add to the fun and I'm fairly sure that they were ha ...

Walsh out of Cheltenham after fall: Ruby Walsh is a serious doubt for the Grand National after his Cheltenham ...
Ruby Walsh's Cheltenham Festival was ended prematurely after he was taken to hospital with a suspected broken right arm in the JCB Triumph Hurdle. Riding Abbyssial, the Irish jockey fell midway through the race and was then hit by Adriana Des Mottes. The 34-year-old could now miss the Grand National meeting at Aintree in April. I'm sure he's replaceable .

The 1st day of the Cheltenham Festival today and a horse (Our Conor) sadly had to be destroyed in only the 3rd race! Will we see it reported today or tomorrow? Doubt it.

I've never placed a bet myself (other than the odd £ on Grand National day when I pick the name of a horse that I like best) but I can't believe that Paddy Power are taking bets on the trial outcome on the murder of Reeva Steenkamp (RIP) and trying to justify it as a novelty bet. Outrageous. When did the loss of life and the pain and devastation of all the families involved become subject to 'novelty betting' even if Paddy Power say it's a separate issue. I agree with those I've heard debating saying place your bets for Cheltenham with another bookie.

Grand National begins on 4th April. And this year they're doing a Human Race for the 1st time and the 2 front runners are. RYLAN CLARK and BETH TWEDDLE.
Grand National long/shortlist: Last year I backed the 2nd (Cappa Bleu), 3rd (Teaforthree), and 5th (Rare Bob) in the Grand National ...OK, I also backed Colbert Station,which fell, but 3/4 placed ain't bad(Paddy Power paid out on 1st 5 e/w). What's more, I had the winner in the work's sweepstake (Aurora's Encore) and backed it for my wife at 100-1. The year before, I won the English national with Neptune Collonges (33-1), won the Scottish National (Merigo: 9-1 -beat Aurora's Encore...just ...that was a sign!) and also won the Midlands National at Uttoxeter with Master Overseer (25-1) I also won the Welsh National last year and backed the first two home: Mountainous : 20-1 and Hawkes Point 14-1 (who has a great chance tomorrow,by the way at Haydock). I know that Cheltenham is next but,for the sake of my good friend Chris Shuttleworth, who keeps bugging me to "get my tips out" for the National, then I thought I should oblige. There's a way to go yet,but here goes: Tidal Bay (what a fairytale if the old boy ...
The weights for the Grand National have been announced and as expected Tidal Bay and Long Run are among the top weights. Triolo D'Alene and Rocky Creek are the younger horses towards the head of the betting. Teaforthree and Seabass are back again. Welsh National winner Mountainous has just ten stone seven which is a handy weight and Carlingford Lough will have his fans. Lets hope the rain stops at some stage as four and a half miles is bad enough on good ground.
I've already got my selections picked for the Grand National race on 5 April: Tidal Bay, Long Run, balthazar king, triolo d'alene. Long Run i got 40-1 has won over a million pounds in prize money, won yesterday at kelso.

On His Own became just the third horse in history to win the coveted Goffs Thyestes Chase twice with a gallant all-the-way effort at Gowran Park Racecourse for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend. The 10-year-old is now fancied to head to Aintree for the Grand National. Well done Paul and Willie!
'Vince (Cable) is surprisingly right about David Cameron being like Enoch Powell. Both men used the immigration issue to reinflate sagging careers and reputations. Neither had any serious plan to do anything about it. But the Prime Minister, unlike Mr Powell, could do something about it if he wanted to. He could admit that as long as this country stays inside the EU, it cannot control its borders or its laws, and so its government has no power over migration at all. And he could say that, for this and other good reasons, he would now call an immediate General Election on a policy of rapid withdrawal from the EU. But for that to happen he would have to have courage and principle, and you might as well enter a snail in the Grand National as to expect such things of him. Instead, the two Coalition parties will shortly pretend to go to war with each other (as I predicted back in September 2011).'

Darel Dieringer was born on the 1st June 1926 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He had a short Grand National career, making his debut in 1957 and at first he had little success. In 1961 and 1962 he had no wins although he took part in twenty one races. He finished the seasons at 35th and 33rd respectively. In 1963 he moved from John Zink and John Whitford to drive for Bill Stroppe and he won the last race of the season, the Golden State 400 at Riverside, California. He started in twenty seven races and ended the season at seventh in the point’s race. In 1964 he had to wait until the second from the last race for his second career win at Augusta, Georgia. This season he finished eleventh in the points race. 1965 was an even better year for Darel when he won his third career race in the Daytona 500 qualifying race and he won the pole for the Daytona 500 but unfortunately he was unable to turn this into a win leaving him placed third in the overall points race. The following year, 1966 was a very good season for ...
Who or what sparked your digital curiosity in 2013? Google Zeitgeist 2013: What We Searched For Google has released its annual list of most searched for terms of the year, offering a digital reflection on the year that was. Actor Paul Walker was the overall most searched for term of the year following his death last month. In the list of most searched people, he was followed by fellow actor Cory Monteith and former Olympian Oscar Pistorius, with Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher and Nigella Lawson also featured. Of the questions we asked Google, “what is twerking” topped the list. YOLO, spooning and Zumba were among the other terms that confused us this year. New gadget releases also made for popular searches, with the iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy 4s, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One all generating interest. But trends differed greatly when broken out by region. While in the UK buzzed about the royal baby and Grand National, Canadians took to Google to research Mayor Rob Ford’s latest blunders and the UAE re ...
~~~A trip down memory lane~~~ Rowan's 'Days of Thunder' By Chris Verner... Salisbury Post On Oct. 6, 1958, the Salisbury Evening Post’s front page carried the news that Pope Pius XII had suffered a stroke and lay “at deaths’ door.” A racially motivated bomb blast had wrecked a high school in Clinton, Tenn. The Yankees had beaten the Milwaukee Braves 7-0 in the fifth game of the World Series. And inside the sports pages was this headline: “Lee Petty drives Olds to win at local track.” The story began like this: “Veteran driver Lee Petty of Randleman practically put ‘locks’ on the 1958 Grand National points championship by winning the 100-mile late model hardtop race at the new Salisbury Super Speedway yesterday.” For his Sunday afternoon drive — which was delayed because of a muddy track — Petty pocketed $800 in prize money. His ’57 Olds led a field of legendary names in stock-car racing. Buck Baker finished second (the only other car on the lead lap). Tiny Lund, Cotton Owens, Gob ...
McCoy not expecting to beat Murray Tony McCoy believes Andy Murray is a worthy favourite for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year title. The winner of the annual award will be announced on Sunday evening in a live celebration of the sporting year at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. Murray is the long odds-on favourite to lift the prize, but McCoy is next in the betting ahead of the likes of dual World and Olympic athletic champion Mo Farah, Tour de France winner Chris Froome and sailing great Sir Ben Ainslie. McCoy was crowned SPOTY back in 2010 after securing a first Grand National win on Don't Push It and his 4,000th career win this season helped propel him onto the shortlist this year.
Nicky Henderson raised the possibility of the Grand National for Long Run after another crack at the King George.
The great age of convertible racing The great age of stock car racing with convertibles dates roughly from 1955 to 1962. Things got rolling in late ’55 when Big Bill France, looking to expand NASCAR across the country, took over the SAFE (Society of Auto Sports, Fellowship, and Education) association, which ran an all-convertible stock car circuit. Repackaged as the NASCAR Convertible Division, the series ran in parallel and in combination with the top-tier Grand National Series (now Sprint Cup) from 1956 to 1959. A big hit with the fans because they could see the drivers at work, especially on the short tracks, the convertibles packed the house at Soldier Field in Chicago and Bowman Gray Stadium (photo above) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Convertible Division also reflected the production vehicles the fans of the period owned or aspired to, a bit like the NASCAR truck series today. Grand National stars who also raced the ragtops included Lee Petty, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Glen Wood, an ...
We haven't had a PE lesson for a while so I think it's about time we did some sporting facts for 1839: The first Grand National at Aintree was run this year on 26th February. It was won by Jem Mason riding Lottery. The first Henley Royal Regatta was held this year. The 3rd Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race was won by Cambridge.
Good Morning, Speaking of Halloween, we have not participated in giving away candy for a very long time. I recall the last time we did it we have adults coming to the door asking for candy and treats. Or they would say it for the baby in the stroller maybe a week old. Are you serious? Or the teenagers like 18 or 19 and not even in costume. We usually give the kids next door some candy or fruit but then the house goes dark and all the animals come inside. One year when the kids were younger we went to the Grand National rodeo at the cow palace and we had the kids dress up as rodeo clowns and man did they rob the place. First Baptist church in Fairfield has a harvest fest with jump houses, go karts and 100 games. One year a we had a couple servicemen from Travis bring horses and let the kids ride them. I got the manure that year.
Am reading biography of Patrick Leigh Fermor by Artemis Cooper; essentially 400 pages of upper-class gossip, which occasionally attains truly surreal levels, e.g.: "Once her second marriage to Paddy's friend Robert Kee was over, [Janetta Jackson] had married Derek Jackson, one of the great scientists of his day who had ridden in the Grand National three times." Oh, of course. That Derek Jackson.
Don't care what Stephen King says, I thought The Shining was a masterful film. One of the finest true 'horror' films ever made. It really scared me. I did get slightly bemused, though, when Danny wrote the name of, perhaps, the most famous Grand National winner of all time, on the mirror wall. At that moment, I stopped being scared and the image of Ginger McCain came into mind everytime Jack Nicholson came on screen. I laughed out loud at this point much to the annoyance of my fellow cinema brethren...but they can sod off.
I dunno why this came into my mind? I never got into gambling. And I’m really big about enjoying myself. I backed Shergar in the Grand National and won £40 a couple of times. And I once won sick squid on a slot machine. But it didn’t float my boat. When I was young there used to be jobs for men where you got dirty and destroyed stuff and then made things work better. Thursday was payday and there would be women at the gate to get the cash from the man so that it didn’t go to the bookies. Four or five at least. The wife of Nobby was one. He was a demon on the forklift and would be played by Brad Pitt in the movie. I was a student in my first job. I offered him a roll-up – and he took my whole quarter ounce of tobacco and rolled it into one *** I loved him instantly. This annoying characteristic of mine is not always condusive for a fulfilling time. I have been attracted to selfish….let’s say obnoxious, types all me life. Some are now my best friends. On this date in Automotive History: June 15 1986 A Royal Milestone Richard Petty made his 1000th NASCAR start at the Miller American 400 in Brooklyn, Michigan. Petty’s records of success and longevity will likely never be broken. "The King" is first all-time in wins (200), races started (1,184), top-five finishes (555), top-ten finishes (712), pole positions (126), laps completed (307,836), laps led (52,194), races led (599), and consecutive races won (10). His statistical domination of NASCAR racing is unparalleled in the sports world. Richard, of course, grew up on the NASCAR circuit watching his father, hall-of-famer Lee Petty. Richard started his first race on July 10, 1958, just after his twenty-first birthday. During the early part of his career he normally had to beat his dad to earn victories, and Lee wouldn’t let him have anything for free. Richard explained his accident in his first Grand National race, "Daddy bumped me in the rear and my car went right into the wall." By the late sixties Pe ...
Elections 2013 offer a great deal of hope to the beleaguered masses of Pakistan. In order to become a real, vibrant democracy, Pakistan needs to, once and for all, eradicate the threat of the army leaving their barracks and laying claim to their dictatorial throne. Democratically transferring power from one party to the next, regardless of who comes into power, will be the first nail in the coffin of dictatorships in Pakistan. It is unbelievable that we have yet to successfully do that since our inception in1947. The citizens of this nation, who for so long have been left frustrated by their inability to have a voice, will determine the future of this country, and that of the politicians who aspire to hold the biggest office in Pakistan. It is we, the people, merely through exercising our democratic right, who will usher in a new and exciting time for Pakistani politics; the change that we desperately need is that of continued democracy. As a first-time voter, this has been an exciting couple of years for ...
