vaudeville (vôd´vĬl), originally a light song, derived from the drinking and love songs formerly attributed to Olivier Basselin and called Vau, or Vaux, de Vire. Similar to the English music hall, American vaudeville was a live entertainment consisting of unrelated songs, dances, acrobatic and magic acts, and humorous skits and sketches by a variety of performers and acts, each on stage for about five minutes. From humble origins in barrooms and "museums," vaudeville became the dominant attraction in American popular entertainment, playing in hundreds of theaters throughout the United States. It flourished from 1881, when Tony Pastor gave the first "big time" vaudeville show in New York City, until 1932, when its greatest center, New York's Palace Theatre, abandoned live shows and became a movie theater. Such headliners as George M. Cohan, Harry Houdini, Eva Tanguay, W. C. Fields, Fay Templeton, Will Rogers, Ed Wynn, Eddie Cantor, Jimmy Durante, Irene Franklin, Fred Allen, George Burns and Gracie Allen ...

Greetings from a former English major who invites you to brush up your Shakespeare, as we prepare to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the most famous writer...well, possibly ever. On Saturday, April 19, our "Those Were the Days" program presents an afternoon of "The Bard on the Air," with radio productions of "Much Ado About Nothing" (starring Leslie Howard and Rosalind Russell), "The Taming of the Shrew" (starring John Barrymore), and a two-part production of "Othello" starring Richard Widmark in the role of Iago—plus, there may be a surprise or two (and no debate over who wrote what). The play's the thing beginning at 1:00 pm CST on WDCB (90.9 FM in Chicagoland; everywhere). Then on Sunday, our sister show Radio's Golden Age adds a little Bard of its own as James Stewart appears in "Hamlet" (well, sort of) as part of his short-lived western series, "The Six Shooter." We'll also have an Easter-time broadcast of "The Hallmark Playhouse" and comedy with George Burns and Gracie Allen. Join us a ...

slept in until 9 this morning - so unusual for me. Came in to living room and turned on TV. Whomever was watching last night, left it on the TCM channel. A black & white movie was on and I was intrigued by a woman tap dancing. The movie is Honolulu, released in 1939 and starred Robert Young, George Burns, Gracie Allen & Eleanor Powell. Granted the images are not as clear as HD movies today but I feel it was very well done for that time. Thanks to my DirectTV, I was able to rewind it and watch from the beginning. Lots of music and dancing without vulgar innuendos and nudity. LOVED IT
Watching 1939 movie, "Honolulu" with Robert Young and Eleanor Powell. Anyone watch the oldies? George Burns and Gracie Allen are also in this film!
Just some random thoughts. "The Matrix" is an obvious metaphor. Nobody gets out alive. Gracie Allen was a comic genius. I'm feeling much better, but this horrendous cough can go away anytime now...or yesterday.

This is a comment version of a much longer story I often tell the kids at Habbo. I've never formally written it down. I better post it here for the day I finally write a formal version of it... Slightly off topic, certainly self-indulgent, but part of old Hollywood nonetheless, Jim and Marion Jordan, better known as Fibber McGee and Molly, this wedded pair were quite arguably the finest comedians on the radio and endured in some form from April 16, 1935 to October 2, 1959. Jim was a master of improve, and comedic timing. Marion was similarly talented and held her own on their show which boasted some of the great radio celebrities of the time; Gale Gordon, Arthur Q. Brian, Harold Peary, Bea Bernadette, the amazingly versatile Bill Thompson, and from the late 1930's through the early 1950's, the Billy Mills Orchestra, and The Kings Men. Sadly, Marion died in the early 1960's after battling alcoholism for most of her life. After his wife passed away, Jim quietly retired and only appeared a few times afterwards to do television commercials for the long running sponsor of Fibber McGee and Molly, Johnson's Wax, and one episode of "Chico and the Man". I have a vast collection of the radio shows thanks ...

DAN'S OLD-TIME RADIO CORNER - ROMANCE (AND A BIT OF BURNS & ALLEN) The CBS radio show Romance is little-known, because in its 15-year run, CBS used it mostly as filler. It had no long-term time slot or day of the week. It would appear whenever CBS had a slot to fill. Which is sad, because it was a top-flight program, with excellent writing and great stars. In this episode, you'll hear William Conrad, John Dehner, Parley Baer, Joseph Kearns, Vic Perrin, Sam Edwards, and Virginia Gregg. And stay tune afterwards for a short but hilarious clip from George Burns and Gracie Allen. This episode of Romance was the last episode ever broadcast. Fun Fact for the Day, Tues., Oct. 1 -- "Vaudeville" (Day 6): Even serious thespians such as Sarah Bernhardt and Maurice Barrymore (great grandfather of Drew Barrymore) performed short plays in vaudeville theaters, as did Maurice's daughter, Ethel. But the comedy acts were always the biggest draws, and numerous stars paid their dues on the vaudeville circuit. Some of the most notable: Charlie Chaplin, Ed Wynn, the Marx Brothers, Danny Kaye, Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny, and Milton Berle. George Burns did, too. In fact, George went through many partners, including a singing seal, before finding Gracie Allen. But it didn't matter if you were one of the star attractions -- you still had to endure the same boardinghouse beds and food as everyone else when you were on the road. It was often said that, in some places, the bedbugs ate better than the vaudevillians. And as George Burns once (or probably more than once) said, "The only thing worse than working in vaudeville is not working in vaudeville."

I missed the show and will catch later. Did Bob pick George Burns & Gracie Allen?
Edith Bunker, your character is an icon of a bygone era. Your funny nasal voice reminds me a bit of Gracie Allen who was married for years and performed with husband George Burns. The portrayer Jean Stapleton was very gifted and talented. I enjoyed the 2000 interview that Donnie and Marie had with Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor concerning their characters. I continue to watch your reruns and learn alot about life and people from your programs. Norman Lear who also made the Waltons brought us the golden gem of All in the Family. It was a blessing to be fans of both shows and I still am. Good entertainment is a rare commodity anymore with the many television stations we have. Jean, I know that I really didn't do you justice just know that this is a Valentine of love from a lifelong fan who you made smile, laugh, and ultimately your portrayal reached out and touched my brain cells and I learned to be a better human being. Thanks. God bless you.

Mar 9, 1996: Comedian George Burns dies at age 100...  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  * On this day, March 9th in 1996, the legendary cigar-chomping performer George Burns dies at his home in Beverly Hills, California, just weeks after celebrating his 100th birthday. Born Nathan Birnbaum in New York City, Burns was one of 12 children. As a young child, he sang for pennies on street corners and in saloons, and at age 13, he started a dance academy with a friend. In 1922, Burns was performing the latest in a string of song-and-dance acts in Newark, New Jersey, when he teamed up with a fellow performer, Gracie Allen. Though Allen began as the straight one in their partnership, her natural comedic ability prompted Burns to rewrite their material to give her most of the punch lines. From then on, Burns played the straight man to Allen’s ditz, with hilarious results. By the time Burns and Allen married in 1926 ...
The making of Alan Sherman’s first record. Stan Cornyn : Then, as often is the case, the phone rang. Calling WBR in Burbank was Hollywood comedian George Burns, of the George Burns and Gracie Allen Shows, a radio super-couple. Burns had met Mike Maitland at Jim Conkling’s stag farewell dinner months earlier. Now, Burns asked WBR’s president to sign a contract, not with him, but with another, “in” Hollywood comedy singer. His name: Allan Sherman. “Just give him a listen.” Urged Burns, and Maitland said “sure.” His name was little-known outside the broadcast business. It labeled a pudgy-bodied writer-developer who lived next door to Harpo Marx over in Brentwood. For fun, Sherman would sing his parody songs at parties. He’d even sung his parody of “Big Bad John” at the Conkling party rewritten as “Big Bad Jim.” Burns said Sherman’s repertoire was ready for records. Plenty of laughers. Satires on songs everybody knew the words of. Like from My Fair Lady: A piece of rye bread isn ...

For Valentines day I present to you one of the great Hollywood love stories. Born with one blue eye and one green eye and a twinkle in both, Gracie Allen arrived in this world on July 26, 1895 in San Francisco. Her dream was to be on stage, but while on her way there, she attended secretarial school. She was invited by her roommate to Union Hill, NJ, to see if she was interested in working with either member of a comedy act that was splitting up. The act featured Billy Lorraine, and a young man named Nathan Birnbaum. Birnbaum’s stage name — George Burns — was constructed from the Burns Brothers Coal Company and the nickname, George, that his brother occasionally used. Gracie chose George as a partner and launched the laughs heard ‘round the world! In 1922, she and George Burns, who was born on January 20, 1896, made their first performance at the Hill Street Theatre in Newark, NJ, where they were paid $5 per day. George saw that the audience not only found Gracie’s character funny but they fell ...
It's not M&W, 2Rs or George Burns and Gracie Allen. It's Rowan and Martin parodying Burns and Allen.
Say What? "You can lead a horse to water. If he drowns, never give him mouth to mouth." Scott Wood "You've buttered your bread - now sleep in it." Gracie Allen "On the other hand, you have different fingers." Steven Wright "Where there's a will, I want to be in it." Anonymous "At one point we decided to fight fire with fire. Well, basically...your house burned even faster." Anonymous firefighter "I made quite a name for myself back home. I left when I found out what it was. Herb Shriner

I've been watching episodes of George Burns and Gracie Allen on ANTTV. That is a really funny show.
And ask anyone who listened - I was the facilitator/straight man. YOU were the star…I was George Burns to your Gracie Allen. :)
"I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather-- not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car!" --Gracie Allen* *One of my favorite Gracie quotes; forgive me for repeating it
20th day of 2013 345 remaining Sunday, January 20, 2013 ENTERTAINER OF THE CENTURY DAY With cigar in hand, seemingly always accompanied by a young and beautiful woman, George Burns, made millions of us laugh with his quick wit and easy style. Born Nathan Birnbaum on this day in 1896 in New York City, Burns’ show biz career got started with his straight man act for zany Gracie Allen back in 1922. On January 7, 1926 the two were wed and the Burns and Allen team made history from vaudeville to radio (1932) to films and then, TV beginning in 1950. Several generations used Mr. Burns’ trademark close, “Say goodnight, Gracie,” whenever someone made a ditzy comment. Hollywood cast the duo with their inspired lunacy in a slew of films in the ’30s including: International House, We’re Not Dressing, A Damsel in Distress, College Swing and Honolulu. Three decades passed before George Burns made another movie. This one was a winner. In fact, The Sunshine Boys won George Burns his first Oscar for Best Suppo ...

1/8/13 Gracie Allen. The best. 50 yrs before Steven Wright she was right on with "logic." Hi Koo by r.

Two down... Last day for Christmas lights... George Burns & Gracie Allen / Jack Benny marathon! It's been a
42 inch Sony Hi Def TV and I am watching 1954 episodes of George Burns and Gracie Allen.
Here's George Burns and Gracie Allen, with the three Smoothies and Artie Shaw and His Orchestra performing Jingle Bells from the Burns and Allen Christmas radio show of 1940. This transcription disc is not in my collection, but I was able to clean up the audio and give it a fuller sound while minimizing the digital artifacts that were present in the original audio file I was working with. Enjoy!
Gracie Allen starting off our comedy &karaoke night... Come on out no cover. Drink specials all night .
It’s been 86 years since the Arcada Theatre opened to Vaudeville audiences in St. Charles. The biggest names of the day graced its stage – George Burns and Gracie Allen, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, The Little Rascals and so many more. For the next 80 years, its ride would be a rocky one. From...
Remember the TV shows of yesteryear? Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, Cisco Kid, Howdy Doody, Little Rascals, Lassie, Jerry Mahoney & Knucklehead Smith, the 1950's cartoons, Jackie Gleason Show, Red Skelton Show, Art Linkletter Show, I Love Lucy, George Burns & Gracie Allen, Sid Cesar & Imogene Coco, Ozzie & Harriet, Fury, Dragnet, Perry Mason, Voice of Firestone, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, Uncle Miltie, Martha Ray, Arthur Godfrey Show, Tennessee Ernie Ford Show, etc. Ahh, I remember it well! There was NO: filth, vulgarity, nudity, fornicating, filthy language, shacking up out of wedlock and living in sin, anti- Trinity, pro-Satan/evil, the sexually perverted, etc. Ahh, I remember it well! Those Were the good ole days! Today's weekly, 'family' TV serials promote all the evil stuff above. Americans have been indoctrinated that everything and everyone is acceptable and 'ok.' The left wing has pushed that there is no God (no Holy Trinity), no sin, no conscience, no guilt. The Am ...
It is kind of cool, with the fire burning and a litany of classic comedy cassettes on the battery operated player. Greats like Jack Benny, Gracie Allen, George Burns, Mel Blanc, Judy Canova and Will Durst.
In 1940, George Burns' wife, Gracie Allen, ran for president of the United States. She ran on the "Surprise Party" ticket.
I added a video to a playlist Burns & Allen - Gracie Tells a Story
For any of you who love and live for comedy! The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show is simply A marvel and comical genius. I approve this message. Say goodnight Gracie !!!
sez: OK, here’s my gripe. Ellen DeGeneres is getting the Mark Twain Prize for Humor this year. Does she deserve it? Probably. She is, after all, the first major comic figure in American history to come out of the closet. But there are several who deserve it just as much if not more and have been shut out so far. I’m thinking of Mel Brooks, Carol Burnett, Sid Caesar, Woody Allen, Jerry Lewis, Bill Murray, Albert Brooks, Christopher Guest, Keenen Ivory Wayans. But I think the folk who hand out this award should issue the name each year of a “Hall of Fame” recipient, some comedian who is no longer with us but who deserves recognition. Perhaps family and friends could gather for a similar kind of evening, showcasing that person’s legacy. Here I’m thinking of Jack Benny, Will Rogers, George Burns and Gracie Allen, The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, Steve Allen, Charlie Chaplin, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, John Belushi, Robert Benchley, Albert Brooks, W.C. Fields, Jackie Gleason, Godfrey Cambrid ...
this amazed me as well...but Bush didn't know there were sunni and shi'ite and sufi muslims and Reagan's favorite book was about George and Gracie Allen. It appears corporate america likes their politicians focused--on improving their financial status and nothing else.
Omg...George Burns and Gracie Allen!! Didn't know this show still came on. George and Gracie make me smile. :)
I'm voting for Gracie and the Surprise Party!
"swim caps are condoms for your head"-Gracie Allen. Spoken like a true *** Love youz :)
In 1940 the United States was just emerging from the shadow of the Great Depression and war loomed in Europe. Into these serious times stepped Gracie Allen, part of the popular comic duo Burns and Allen, who launched a campaign for President. Allen’s ‘Surprise Party’ began as a publicity stunt, but ...
Home from Rockford, and my "girl" Gracie Allen is home. Got to see one of her beautiful daughters! Thank you Sheri Wright for for taking cae of this "mom" X8! And special thanks & wild rice to her chauffer!
I've never really heard Gracie Allen before! Turns out her voice walks the line between cute and annoying, like, flawlessly. New role model!
You can watch all those shows on Antenna T.V. My favorite is "Burns & Allen" I loved Gracie
Wow, Roseanne should have taken some lessons from Gracie Allen. Gracie did a much better job of advertising her candidacy for president
Just finished watching a couple of old George Burns and Gracie Allen TV shows from 1957. Really funny.

Well, the garage sale is over. It was cold today. And damp. But I got to hang out with a good friend so that was worth it. We're watching George Burns & Gracie Allen. Funny. Have a good evening everyone. :) Tootles.
Will referred to last night's Alfred E. Smith dinner as the Alfred E. Neuman dinner. I am living with Gracie Allen.
Radio ad blatantly used an old George Burns/Gracie Allen skit. Is there no justice in this world?
Watching DVD of the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. This is some funny stuff. One lady just told the other she's studying geometry and Spanish So the lady says oh say something to me in geometry language. So the second lady says pie r square. Then the First Lady says oh that's what their teaching you in school now? Pies are round hunny, cookies are round, *** are square. I thought I was going to die laughing.
I'll be your George Burns if you'll be my Gracie Allen.
Obama and Romney may be jokers, but they can't beat Gracie Allen's 1940 prez campaign:
"No matter what you tell them, don't say anything."-Gracie Allen
ah, this is exactly what I need in the midst of all this election nonsense Gracie Allen for President
Going to bed sitting up here trying to watch Burns and Allen eyes r burning just in case no one knows who I' m talking about George Burns and Gracie Allen.
I wanted to watch Alfred Hichcock tonight but Sprouts with Thomas was on and it was nice to let someone else relax and the Princess pillow. George Burns and Gracie Allen are on now. I love Gracie, she was an amazing comedian.
Another question - When you were a child, what was YOUR FAMILY's favorite TV show? For me - my parents watched George Burns & Gracie Allen ("say goodnight, Gracie"); Jackie Gleason ("Send you to the MOON, Alice"). I know this dates me - but I'm old enough not to care if people think I'm old. I AM old! (older than I thought I would be; that's for sure!)
(2/2) George Burns and Gracie Allen debuted 1 day less than 25 years before SNL (really) cc

Empowering God’s Ministries Together The Power of a Single Life (Sermon 3 of 4 in this series) 2 Corinthians 6 : 3-13 My particular profession causes me to spend a lot of time in the cemetery. The messages on tombstones, especially in older cemeteries, never cease to fascinate me. Some are funny: “Here lies my wife, here let her lie, now she’s at peace and so am I.” Some are sad: “Here lies the body of a man who died; nobody mourned, nobody cried, how he lived, how he fared, nobody knows, nobody cared.” Some are tender: “Gracie Allen and George Burns Together Again.” Some are instructive: “My dear friends, as you pass by, as you are now, so once was I, as I am now, you soon must be, prepare yourselves to follow me.” On every tombstone there is a birth date and a death date and a little dash separating the two. None of us had much to do with our birth. It just happened to us. We may have little to do with our death. But we have everything to do with that little dash, which symbolizes ou ...
George Burns leaving the funeral of Gracie Allen accompanied by Jack Benny and son Ronnie.
I have gotten hooked on the reruns of the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show... Better then lot of things today.
Phyllis Diller Was one of the last of the great comedy legends, also an accomplished musician, her talent for punchline jokes broke the way open for other Female Comedians, Lucile Ball, Gracie Allen, Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, Rue McClanahan, and many others have passed before her, I know when she Arrives to the Big Main Room of Comedians up in the Higher Realms, They will be holding a Wonderful Gathering and drinking, and telling old stories again. Respect to a woman who for her time, set a standard and opened the doors for so many others.
She wasn't the first woman to crack jokes on stage; Gracie Allen had been getting laughs for decades playing dumb for George Burns. But Diller was among the first who didn't need a man around. The only guy in her act was a husband named "Fang," who was never seen and didn't exist.
.ok..I know we just got George Burns and Gracie Allen home...but, somethings missing..hmmm...I KNOW we need a Jack Benny to complete the set! off to petsmart goes Grange and Eron to get the last sibbling of the litter..and so ..Jack Benny will be home soon too!
George Burns and Gracie Allen play a hilarious duo in this Carole Lombard film titled We're Not Dressing.
For those who might have missed it... A Climbing Stock's first interview turned out to be a full length feature. A 12 minute interview on WGVU, Michigan's NPR station with five time Gracie Allen Award winner, Shelley Irwin. Amazing, that we got such a generous amount of time... it must have turned out pretty well. Shelley took good care of me on the air. Please give it a listen and let me know what you thought. Could you hear my nerves? Did my jokes work? Thanks to all who are climbing with me. Hopefully, we all get to plant some seeds that miraculously grow.
