That time our veterans and friends joined Billy Joel onstage during 'Goodnight Saigon.'
On Friday evening, Billy Joel played for a sold-out concert in Washington, D.C. and requested veterans accompany him on stage during "Goodnight Saigon." We found some lovely Vietnam veterans & active-duty service members to sing with him. Once on stage, they were met with cheers and applause. Billy later shook their hands, making it a wonderful recognition! Watch videos here:

I guess he's gonna play MSG once a month until he doesn't sell it out, which means he'll be there forever!!! When he got to the chorus of "Goodnight Saigon" and several soldiers & NYPD & FDNY guys came out arm in arm and sang the chorus "we said we'd all go down together"... the Garden stood as one, it was incredibly powerful.he kept saying all night what a great job he had.I agree. Most Appropriate Theme Song from a Broadway Musical: The Musical: Goodnight Saigon The Song: "You Make Me So Horny Baby" And yes, they really, really did say that.LOL
Opinions needed, especially from military folks, active duty or retired. Just watched the Kennedy Center Awards show, very cool. At the end during the Billy Joel version of "Goodnight Saigon" (Impressive job by Garth Brooks I might add), a bunch of veterans joined him on stage and sang. When the song was over the vets all saluted their Comander in Chief who was watching. Now I realize Obama wasn't in the Military but I don't think I have ever seen such a lame salute. Do military personnel see a salute like that as disrespectful? really interested in hearing some feedback on this.
Who saw the Kennedy Center Honors? What a fantastic show. THREE of the honorees are artists that I have worked with. It was so good to see them getting this award: Carlos Santana (Hard Rock Live), Herbie Hancock (Gershwin's World, Possibilities), and Billy Joel (River of Dreams, 2000 Years Live NY Eve Album) My favorite moment was Garth Brooks singing "Goodnight Saigon" with all of the Vietnam Vets on stage (wow!). Another was Snoop Dogg making people dance in their seats - great performance. Another highlight was Rufus Wainwright. Besides the honorees, I have been fortunate to work with others that were on the show: Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard, Vinnie Colaiuta, Snoop Dogg, Tony Bennett, and Garth Brooks. Congratulations to all of the honorees!
Watched the Kennedy a Honor Awards last night with Alexa and Brooke - switching in between the Cowboy/Eagles game - Don Henley and Garth Brooks performed renditions, which included Goodnight Saigon where they brought a bunch of Vietnam Vets out on stage during the performance - it was very inspirational. Check it out on YouTube - very strong!
Did anybody watch the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors show last night? Garth Brookes sang, "Goodnight Saigon’" by Billy Joel. When he sang about how they 'all go down together', that song now has a whole new meaning for today's military servicemen.
MMM: Hopefully you caught The Kennedy Center Honors concert yesterday on CBS. The event, which took place earlier in the month, was broadcast on tape-delay (as is the usual method), with Billy Joel, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, Shirley McLaine and Martina Arroyo getting the recognition. The show featured Harry Belafonte starting the Santana section, which included Steve Winwood, Sheila E. and more. Joel's segment closed the show with Vietnam veterans joining Garth Brooks during "Goodnight Saigon." Joel told Zap2it.com: "I was surprised. I honestly, really thought there were a lot of people who were deserving before I was going to get this. . . jazz musicians, classical musicians, just other people. I've had so much fun, it's like I'm getting an award for doing something I love. Which is an award in itself. . . It's a really good lineup...He went on to say: "I'm still kind of 'Wow!' because I admire all those people. I'm happy I don't have to speak at this; I'd just be, 'Homina-homina-homina,' like Jac ...
Just watched the Kennedy Center honoring Shirley McLaine and Billy Joel. It was ok until they came to honor Billy Joel in which it became an EXCELLENT tribute. Loved when the veterans came out and helped Garth Brooks with "Goodnight Saigon". I had to find my box of Kleenex!
For my post, first comes Allentown. Stick around for the Goodnight Saigon masterpiece.
During the Kennedy Center Honors which aired last night, Honoree Billy Joel's song, Goodnight Saigon, was sung by Garth Brooks. Vietnam veterans took the stage with him including Rolling Thunder founders Walt Sides and Ray Manzo.
If you missed Garth Brooks version of Billy Joels "Goodnight Saigon," and who joined him on stage last night at the Kennedy Center make it your business to see it. It was impressive to say the least.

Just watched the Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Billy Joel. Garth Brooks killed "Allentown" & "Goodnight Saigon", and Rufus Wainwright MURDERED "New York State Of Mind". Left it all on the stage.
Just cried my eyes out watching the Kennedy Center Honors. They honored many people but at the end it was the one and only Billy Joel. Absolutely inspired version of Goodnight Saigon by Garth Brooks, with Vietnam vets and everything. Rufus Wainwright did New York State of Mind and Piano Man. What a tribute, I cried for half an hour. Thank God for Billy Joel.
Just caught the last part of The Kennedy Center program. Tribute to Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon reminded me how much I liked The Nylon Curtain album. That one and Songs In The Attic are 2 of my favorites.
Last year it was Heart singing Led Zeppelin, this year it was veterans brought out to sing Goodnight Saigon. The Kennedy Center Honors always seems to get it right. If you're a Billy Joel fan, Google it.
So I must be hormonal or extremely tired tonight... After sobbing through that movie, I watched Kennedy Center Honors and was completely blown away by Garth Brooks' rendition of "Goodnight Saigon." Not so much by Garth, but by the veterans who took the stage and stood arm-in-arm to sing the chorus "...and will we all go down together!" So beautiful, so moving, so real and yes; I'm still sobbing...
What a tribute! Garth Brooks singing GOODNIGHT SAIGON with a chorus of men and women who served in Vietnam... chills!!!
Did anyone not choke up when the vets came out during "Goodnight Saigon" on the Billy Joel segment of the Kennedy Center Honors?
Watching Kennedy Center Honors, and Garth Brooks just did a wonderful tribute to Billy Joel singing Goodnight Saigon. So good! Did anyone else catch Snoop Dog in the audience gettin down to "Piano Man"?

Tonight's Kennedy Center Honors was uniformally excellent but for the me the highlight was Garth Brooks singing Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon" with a large contingent of veterans joining him on the "we said we'ld all go down together" chorus.
I am blown away by “Goodnight Saigon” performed by Garth Brooks in the honor of Billy Joel. What a great touch by having the Military Vets to come out and sing along
If you didn't just see Garth perform Allentown and Goodnight Saigon during the Kennedy Center Honors you missed out. wow.
That rendition of Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon" on the Kennedy Center Honors with Garth Brooks and a chorus of veterans was a performance for the ages.
Bringing Vietnam vets out on stage to salute Billy Joel during Goodnight Saigon was pretty cool.
Classy. Very classy. Kennedy Center Honors for Billy Joel and Garth Brooks play "Goodnight Saigon" and veterans join to sign the chorus as he usually does. Including a standing ovation from the black tied crowd for the veterans. Awesome!
Kennedy Center Honors are fantastic tonight! "Goodnight Saigon" nearly killed me. That song makes me cry every time. I love it.
"Goodnight Saigon" was amazing! I can remember the first time the roadies got up on stage together to sing the chorus. I never got tears-eyed over them!
The tribute to Billy Joel and what they did with Garth Brooks and the Vets singing "Goodnight Saigon" was AMAZINGLY POWERFUL. I think I saw John Kerry shed a tear. I know I did.
So Garth Brooks just did "Goodnight Saigon" on the Kennedy Center Awards with a bunch of vets on stage. Awesome! Shout out to my Norwich brethren :)
Kennedy Center Honors Billy Joel with an amazing version of Goodnight Saigon with Veterans singing. Should have made it the last song and not shown any politicians but it was still inspiring and sobering.

Garth Brooks singing "Goodnight Saigon" with Vietnam veterans on stage. Here comes the water works.
On tonights Kennedy Center Honors During the tribute to Billy Joel, towards the show's end – Garth Brooks sings “Goodnight Saigon” A great friend of mine and an amazing American hero was part of a large group of Vietnam Vets joining him on stage. The gala was taped Dec. 8 and I am proud of you Jim "milkshake man" mayer. As I've said before Jim Mayer your a national treasure
So this is what happened at the Kennedy Center tonight--from Glenn Gamboa of Newsday: "Don Henley offered an achingly simple version of "She's Got a Way." Garth Brooks provided a country-tinged version of "Only the Good Die Young" and a faithful take on "Allentown" and "Goodnight Saigon," backed by a gospel choir and, later, U.S. Armed Forces veterans, which drew a standing ovation and tears from many in the crowd. Rufus Wainwright hugged himself during an emotional version of "New York State of Mind," before leading the crowd in a sing-along of "Piano Man." Brendon Urie of emo rockers Panic! At the Disco delivered a dramatic version of "Big Shot."
Music is such a big part of my life. It gets me through the day (Louis Jordan, Gaelic Storm, Monkees, Larry Hovis, Arlo Guthrie, etc.) takes the stress away (anything classical), puts me to sleep (Bach cello suites), makes me smile (I've Got a Rose Between My Toes) and cry (Goodnight Saigon)... I wonder what deaf people do to compensate for not hearing music? I mean even as a stress reliever or for boredom. I've been so stressed that without my classical music, I probably would've grinded my teeth down to powder by now. And to sit all day (all day long) clicking a mouse and entering numbers. If I didnt have music to keep me moving through that I'd go crazy
Coming up ... For the the holiday weekend, we'll feature special Acoustic Storm theme-sets to honor Memorial Day. Besides Bruce Springsteen in the Eye of The Storm, we've got John Lennon's acoustic "Imagine," Billy Joel with "Goodnight Saigon," "Blowin' in the Wind" from Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd live in Poland with "Wish You Were Here," and David Crosby, Graham Nash & Michael Hedges on "My Country 'Tis of Thee. Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel is an amazing song! I love him (:
I'm so far removed from the events of Vietnam & that era I have a hard time telling if Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon" is overwrought or not
I don't know why I still listen to Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel when I miss my brother. I'm dumb and sad.

Yet another boring Friday night in Harford County. The bug zapper and a six pack just doesn't cut it anymore. Every so often I like to take the speakers out on the deck and crank them up to Billy Joel and Goodnight Saigon. As many times as I've done this you would think the neighbors would catch on. No not this neighborhood. There are still some that rush out between the sound of the choppers coming in and before the music starts and start digging Fox Holes. I'm told that a few folks keep entrenching tools close by on Friday nights just in case. I love the sound of shovels hitting rock.
I had to work today, but I was in the office alone and listened to all kinds of songs for Veterans on YouTube. Seeing the pictures of the Vietnam Memorial Wall and hearing those songs, like Goodnight Saigon, made me melancholy and miss my brother so much that I actually cried. He was a grunt in Vietnam and somehow made it home. Yet killed later by another Vet with a gun and that Vet got off because he cried Vietnam flashback. I understand the right to bear to arms, but guns do kill, not just people. If that gun had not been in his hand, my brother would be alive. The killer would not have stabbed him or hit him in the head because he was a coward. He shot him 5 times in the back as he walked away. Good luck with open carry. Let's just hope too many good citizens don't get killed because the bad guy takes the gun away first. Everybody loved my brother, Roger. He's in heaven now, but I still thank him and all the vets in the US that fought in Vietnam and came home to a thankless nation. May the V ...
