A lot of the time you hear NBA analysts quibble over who the greatest player of a certain generation is. What makes this difficult is determining the generations themselves. I think, because players are typically in their prime for about 5-7 years, the generations are best broken up into half-decades. That means when people talk about who the best player is in the late-90's generation, there are really five names that are worth mentioning: Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and Dirk Nowitzki. I think those five players are undoubtedly the best of their generation. However, and this was even debated last night on ESPN by Jalen Rose, Bill Simmons, and Michael Wilbon, who is the best? Most people tend to go back-and-forth between Duncan and Kobe. However, anyone who watched the San Antonio Spurs eliminate the Golden State Warriors last night saw the Spurs play the last 5 minutes with Duncan on the bench.
