It's but for us, it's the 2nd annual Thank you for joining us as we shared images & information about black holes. We'll keep hunting for black holes and studying them. How? Spotting black holes is tricky. Because they don’t give off light, astronomers have a difficult time pinpointing their location. But when a black hole gets close enough to an object, like a star, for example, and begins consuming the object's mass, the matter that pours into its gravitational clutches can get so hot that it glows and releases energy in the form of X-ray light. The most powerful X-rays are emitted from the hottest material swirling just outside the edge of the black hole. By observing this light with space telescopes, scientists can determine where black holes are hiding in the cosmos. Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center

The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC) is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's center for human spaceflight training, research, and flight control. The center consists of a complex of one hundred buildings constructed on 1,620 acres (656 ha) in Houston, Texas.[2] Johnson Space Center is home to the United States astronaut corps and is responsible for training astronauts from both the U.S. and its international partners. It is often popularly referred to by its central function during missions, Mission Control. The center, originally known as the Manned Spacecraft Center, grew out of the Space Task Group formed soon after the creation of NASA to co-ordinate the US manned spaceflight program. A new facility was constructed on land donated by Rice University and opened in 1963. On February 19, 1973, the center was renamed in honor of the late U.S. president and Texas native, Lyndon B. Johnson.[3][4] JSC is one of ten major NASA field centers. Contents [hide] 1 History 1.1 Apollo program 1.2 ...

Lunch date with a handsome engineer :) (at Goddard Space Flight Center w/ 2 others)
A coronal mass ejection, or CME, surged off the side of the Sun on May 9, 2014, and NASA's newest solar observatory caught it in extraordinary detail. This was the first CME observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, which launched in June 2013 to peer into the lowest levels of the sun's atmosphere with better resolution than ever before. Watch the movie to see how a curtain of solar material erupts outward at speeds of 1.5 million miles per hour. IRIS must commit to pointing at certain areas of the sun at least a day in advance, so catching a CME in the act involves some educated guesses and a little bit of luck. "We focus in on active regions to try to see a flare or a CME," said Bart De Pontieu, the IRIS science lead at Lockheed Martin Solar & Astrophysics Laboratory in Palo Alto, California. "And then we wait and hope that we'll catch something. This is the first clear CME for IRIS so the team is very excited." The IRIS imagery focuses in on material of 30,000 Kelvin at the base, ...
Got 56.4 mpg to work. New record for me! @ NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Monday, June 16th Hello everyone. I've got three stories for you today. First up, Hubble is beginning the search beyond Pluto. After careful consideration and analysis, the Hubble Space Telescope Time Allocation Committee has recommended using Hubble to search for an object the Pluto-bound NASA New Horizons (artist concept, left) mission could visit after its flyby of Pluto in July 2015. The planned search will involve targeting a small area of sky in search of a Kuiper Belt object (KBO) for the outbound spacecraft to visit. The Kuiper Belt is a vast debris field of icy bodies left over from the Solar System's formation 4.6 billion years ago. Secondly, an International Space Station update. The International Space Station’s six residents prepared for Thursday’s spacewalk while continuing more science and maintenance aboard the orbital laboratory. Cosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov and Oleg Artemyev will exit the Pirs docking compartment Thursday at 9:50 a.m. EDT for about six hours and 30 minutes. They wi ...
In this illustration of Earth seen from the moon, the lunar body tide creates a lump on the moon’s surface.Credit: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Earth’s gravitational pull is so powerful that it creates a small bulge on the surface of the moon. For the first time, scientists have observed this bump from orbit, using NASA satellites. The gravitational tug-of-war between Earth and the moon is enough to stretch both celestial bodies, so they each end up having a slight oval shape, with the tapered ends facing each other. On Earth, this gravitational tension shows up in the form of tides. The moon’s pull has a strong effect on Earth’s oceans because water has so much freedom of movement. [The Moon: 10 Surprising Lunar Facts] The corresponding distorting effect on the moon, called the lunar body tide, is more difficult to see, because the moon is solid except for a molten core. But Earth’s pull raises a small bulge about 20 inches (50 centimeters) from the surface on the near side of the moon ...

Rowe - "'We died at such a place!' The Interaction of Battlefield Archaeology and Forensic Science" ABSTRACT -- Battlefield archaeology has begun to emerge as a recognized discipline within the field of anthropology. Battlefield archaeologists use the methods of archaeology to interpret human behavior on battlefields. Excavated human remains and material culture artifacts (remains of weapons and uniforms) may reveal where fighting took place, where tactical units were deployed and how the soldiers in those units behaved (Did they fight or did they run?). The activities of battlefield archaeologists have been popularized in a number of books and in television shows such as "Battlefield Detectives" and "Two Men in a Trench." Forensic science can contribute to battlefield archaeology in a number of ways. Forensic pathologists ...
'NASA-backed study indicates it’s Elizabeth May, or mass extinction. Your choice': "One would think that a scientific paper predicting the imminent end of civilization, backed by the imprimatur of no less an authority than NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, would generate considerable interest, not to mention news coverage. Oddly, though, it hasn’t, at least not in North America. In Britain, where they know a headline when they see one, newspapers were all over it. It got coverage in Australia and India. But in Canada? Barely a mention. If I hadn’t read it in the National Post, I wouldn’t even know the end was nigh. But it is. At least according to this study, deceptively titled "A Minimal Model for Human and Nature Interaction" (academics have never been good at headlines). Written by a team of mathematicians headed by Safa Motesharrei of the University of Maryland, it concludes that, as National Post’s Tristin Hopper reported, the utter collapse of human civilization will be “difficult t ...

If you thought the polar vortex was bad, get a load of a new climate phenomenon that just might be coming our way. Some scientists say we could be headed for another "Little Ice Age," given how eerily calm the sun has been in recent years. First, a bit of background. The sun goes through cycles that last roughly 11 years, marked by the ebb and flow of sunspots on its surface. At peak sunspot activity, the so-called solar maximum, the sun sports lots of sunspots and is steadily unleashing solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Since our current solar cycle, Number 24, kicked off in 2008, the number of sunspots observed has been half of what heliophysicists expected. “I’ve never seen anything quite like this," Dr. Richard Harrison, head of space physics at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in England, told the BBC. "If you want to go back to see when the sun was this inactive in terms of the minimum we’ve just had and the peak that we have now, you’ve got to go back about 100 years.” ...
At the time this article was written, for over 1600 days NASA has been operating the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbital Camera (LROC) to take high-definition images of the moon surface. Despite being active for over 1600 days, LROC has only imaged about twenty percent (20%) of the moon's surface. Unable to re-task the LROC to go on a wild goose chase for objects that may or may not be near the moon, NASA had to come up with a way to compliment LROC but do so in a fast and inexpensive manner. The solution: LADEE. LADEE moon craft Illustration of LLST components on the LADEE spacecraft (Image credit: MIT, NASA) In 2008, NASA proposed the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) a robotic mission that would orbit the moon to gather detailed information about the lunar atmosphere, conditions near the surface and environmental influences on lunar dust. Scientists have long sought a thorough understanding of these characteristics to address long-standing unknowns, and help them understand other planet . ...
The Moon’s a-Rockin’-an’-a-Rollin’ all year long It is well known that only one side of The Moon faces Earth. This is because The Moon spins on it’s axis at the same rate that it orbits Earth. This is caused by “tidal locking” and commonly occurs when a smaller body such as a moon is orbiting a larger planet. Our first views of the far side of the moon were in the late 1950’s when the soviet spacecraft Luna 3 transmitted photographs back to Earth, and during the lunar missions of the 1960’s. More recently we have The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) orbiting only 50Km above The Moon, making a 3D map of the entire lunar surface. The notion that we only see one half of The Moon however, is not entirely accurate, an orbital effect known as “Libration” means that over time, an observer on Earth will get to see around 59% of The Moon’s surface. The word Libration is from the Latin for "balance scales" (So does the name of constellation Libra) and is because like the arms of a scale, T ...

Satellite will 'chase' tropical storms. Daniel Alvarado Varela is a 31-year-old with no children of his own, but he does have a "baby" of sorts. One weighing nearly four tonnes. That baby is the Core Observatory of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, a freshly-built satellite designed to observe storms forming in the tropical oceans and track their movement into other latitudes. The spacecraft is also designed to improve measurements of rain and snowfall. Mr Alvarado, a Puerto Rican mechanical engineer who has worked on the probe's structure, has watched this baby develop since 2005, and was recently chosen to travel with it on what he calls the child's "graduation": a journey from the US State of Maryland, where the satellite was built, to the Japanese island of Tanegashima. It is from here that the satellite will be launched in February on a Japanese rocket. Days before setting off on that continental journey, the BBC visited Alvarado in his "playground": Nasa's clean-room at Goddard Spa ...

Godspeed, MAVEN. Let us know what the weather’s like up there…. NASA has just taken chatting about the weather to a new level with MAVEN, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution rocket, which just launched yesterday: The agency’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft separated from an Atlas V Centaur rocket’s second stage 53 minutes after launch. The solar arrays deployed approximately one hour after launch and currently power the spacecraft. MAVEN now is embarking on a 10-month interplanetary cruise before arriving at Mars next September. “MAVEN joins our orbiters and rovers already at Mars to explore yet another facet of the Red Planet and prepare for human missions there by the 2030s,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. … MAVEN is traveling to Mars to explore how the Red Planet may have lost its atmosphere over billions of years. By analyzing the planet’s upper atmosphere and measuring current rates of atmospheric loss, MAVEN scientists hope to understand how ...

CAPE CANAVERAL: NASA on Monday launched its unmanned MAVEN spacecraft toward Mars to study the Red Planets atmosphere for clues as to why Earths neighbor lost its warmth and water over time. The white Atlas V 401 rocket carrying the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) orbiter blasted off on schedule at 1:28 pm (1828 GMT). The liftoff of the $671 million spacecraft, followed by a successful separation from the rocket less than an hour later, kicked off the 10-month journey to the Red Planet. "This day has been picture perfect from beginning to end," said the missions principal investigator, Bruce Jakosky.NASA flight director Omar Baez described the liftoff and separation as "flawless." Arrival at Mars after a 440-million-mile (700 million kilometer) journey is scheduled for September 2014, with the science mission of the solar-wing paneled orbiter set to begin two months later. The probe is different from past NASA missions because it focuses not on the dry surface but on the mysteries of the ne ...
The planet Mars, with its rust red countenance and barren character, presents itself as an object of mystery and intrigue. It is also a catalyst for ongoing scientific inquiry. Previous space probes have revealed valleys, channels and ocean beds marking the Martian surface, suggesting the presence of abundant flowing water in earlier times. Such tantalizing clues give way to the obvious question: where did the water go? Scientists believe it may have something to do with the planet's thin atmosphere. The atmosphere is too thin today to support liquid water on the surface, but that elicits another query; what led to Mars' atmospheric depletion? Such questions are at the heart of the next Mars space probe developed by Lockheed Martin and now being prepped for launch at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida - the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission, or MAVEN. Scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla., aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V-401 rocket during a three-week window that opens Nov ...

I got a Here are ten things about me not everyone knows...it's a novel so get some coffee. lol - Horses were my first love from the age of 8. Thanks to my parents who nurtured that passion. I rode at Merrymount Equestrian Center in MD. I was on the National Capitol Equitation League for a few years. Up at 4am to the barn, cleaning stalls and tack, messing around at the barn, bareback rides and home at dark. I loved all of it. My Mom trekked me everywhere. I was a show jumper for the league and my companion was a wild mare named Black Widow for the last 2 years I was showing. She was fresh off the track and her name used to be "Angela's Punch" before she came to the Merrymount Equestrian Center in MD. My trainer said "That's your girl, you train on her. She will teach you to trust." I loved her. I still have her halter with her race name. Numerous accidents, a couple of concussions and some love bites here and there, I still love to ride and horses will always hold a special place in my life. - I held an a ...
The TDRS Project is building three space communications satellites that are part of a follow-on spacecraft fleet that will replenish NASA's Space Network. The TDRS Project Office at Goddard Space Flight Center manages the TDRS development effort. TDRS is the responsibility of the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) office within the Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C. Operations of the network are the responsibility of the Space Network Project at Goddard. In December 2007, NASA signed a contract for Boeing Space Systems to build two third generation TDRS spacecraft for launch in 2013 and 2014. An option for a third TDRS spacecraft was executed in 2011. Within the contract there were required modifications that would enable the White Sands Complex ground system to support the new spacecraft. The January 30, 2013 launch of TDRS-K began the replenishment of the fleet through the development and deployment of the next generation spacecraft ...
Will place my post as promised soon as i get home ! Comment: I think what had me in awe all day was the walk through of the clean room and all the tests the satellites go through. Of course seeing one up close and realizing I thought they were smaller. (For size comparison I’d say a school bus would be close.) Meeting a nobel prize winner up close and personal(Dr. Mather, received Nobel Prize in 2006. ) Sitting in on the press functions regarding the GPM and then watching the MAVEN press conference (by the way just watched the launch and separation on NASA TV-AWESOME!) Basically the whole day was extremely cool, a total learning experience. Two of the things that blew my mind were when I thought wow, of course they test that this way and the other way, they are NASA! & Seeing the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on the building (pictured below) as there still is national pride and you really feel it at NASA.

Julian Assange and MOONLIGHT MAZE   Hacking, madness and obsession on the electronic frontier By Suelette Dreyfus with Research by Julian Assange [Excerpt. Mendax is the pseudonym of Julian Assange.] He did, however, talk to Powerspike on the phone once in a while. The older hacker's highly irreverent attitude and Porky Pig laugh appealed to him. But other than those brief talks, Prime Suspect avoided talking on the phone to people outside the International Subversives, especially when he and Mendax moved into ever more sensitive military computers. Using a program called Sycophant written by Mendax, the IS hackers had been conducting massive attacks on the US military. They divided up Sycophant on eight attack machines, often choosing university systems at places like the Australian National University or the University of Texas. They pointed the eight machines at the targets and fired. Within six hours, the eight machines had assaulted thousands of computers. The hackers sometimes reaped 10 accounts ea ...
