Last night, Tom and I attended, as members of The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, a Middle East Forum on 'Is War With Iran Inevitable?' at The Sofitel Hotel downtown...After the forum, Tom and I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking to Ambassador Thomas Pickerling, on CNN a lot, who among many high held titles, holds the rank of career ambassador, the highest in U.S. Foreign Service; General Anthony Zinni, retired four-star general in the US Marines and former commander in chief of US Central Command; and, Jim Walsh, expert in international security. I was very impressed by these men, and with Tom's conversations with them, Tom being a former US Marine himself and in that line of business.amazing.
There are two basic positions on Foreign Affairs...One..A global leader steps in when it is the right thing to Do...A global police force never wants to Mind it own business..Our world is smaller in the information age..I believe in the Concept of Necessary Evil...Our Country has had Revolutions and Civil Wars..and those events helped us Become a Graceland...With great trepidation I believe we should involve ourselves in Global Affairs..It was right..to put a stop to Hitler...But wars are like Spider Webs...They easily entangle..A big part of our National Debt..is Two Wars on a Credit Card...President Kennedy stated the future of War is More Special Operations..JSOC..Delta Force..Black Ops..

If FB goes paid it will go out of business. The genie is out of the bottle. The fabric of the "public posting" on an open network is too powerful. Wouldn't it be odd, if "another state," (or other global entity) desperate to get in on the 'soft-power' edge that influences global affairs decided to be instrumental in offering a free alternative to an internet dominated by gated paid-subscriptions services? Could China or Russia be the 'shining beacon' of 'free' speech? Could some 'Al Jazeera Net,' offer a global 'free flow' of information network as the salvation for a Middle East facing economic collapse due to depletion of its reserves or unable to compete against renewable alternatives? Lest we forget, a large part of the value of 'Big Data' comes from being able to analyze the behavior patterns of what society gives away freely.

All of us remember one teacher who was kind and caring. Today, I realize she was respectful, fair and talented. Ms.Josephson, my 2nd grade teacher also introduced us to global affairs and people, without stereotyping the curriculum. This curriculum was new in the 1950's. One afternoon we were visited by a woman who had been in a WWII concentration camp, I vividly remember the numbered tattoo on her arm. Frequently, we spoke conversational French. There was a large scenic poster of Norway on the wall. Today, we would label these character and global education. My hope is that each child has such a memorable teacher and experiences. It is a shame that we have to regulate and standardize so much of the curriculum.

So far I have an Ambassador and an Associate Provost for Global Affairs on-board. Iowa Poet Laureate, Mary Swander reads with a group of students and authors from their collaborative drama Farmscape, which has been incorporated into the new book, Farmscape: the Changing Rural Environment. The drama consists of a collection of Iowa farmers’ stories gathered by a class of students in Swander’s Iowa State English course, Writing About Environmental Issues. The students spoke with many diverse farmers throughout the state and captured their stories in their own words. The result is “a beautiful, often heart-breaking portrayal of the wrenching changes in Midwestern farming.” — Richard Longworth, Senior Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs

In the midst of a nationwide election campaign in which many politicians trumpet their support for the buildup and employment of U.S. military power around the world, the American public’s disagreement with such measures is quite remarkable. Indeed, many signs point to the fact that most Americans want to avoid new wars, reduce military spending, and support international cooperation. The latest evidence along these lines is a nationwide opinion survey just released as a report (Foreign Policy in the New Millennium) by the highly-respected Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Conducted in late May and early June 2012, the survey resulted in some striking findings. One is that most Americans are quite disillusioned with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars of the past decade. Asked about these conflicts, 67 percent of respondents said they had not been worth fighting. Indeed, 69 percent said that, despite the war in Afghanistan, the United States was no safer from terrorism. Naturally, these attitudes about milit ...

Dear God... I have passions in humanity and global affairs... I am easily moved by pain and I want my life to have meanings. I also happen to love luxuries... I even want to travel with private jet or collect my pilot license... I have been in a luxurious life... I had an overwhelmingly generous ex boyfriend who provided me with money to buy nice attire, visit high end restaurants, etc... I was actually less deceitful when the needs of affections, trust, sex, humility, and luxuries were fulfilled... I love working yet I want to worry less about making money... I prefer to be a wife, a mother, and focus on philanthropy, advocacy, and helping those in needs... I want my husband to be the main breadwinner and I will support him entirely... Today, my ex who happens to be the best among all my boyfriends called me up... When he called me Sayang, it still feels like when we were together before... It feels right... I loved and cared about him not because of his money... But because he is an example of a success ...

Frankly, who wants to be the one to point out, in the middle of the festivities, that Michelle Obama was just a Chicago Daley machine hack lawyer who was rewarded with a quarter million dollar a year job of neutralizing community complaints against the omnivorous University of Chicago Hospitals? She resigned from her $50,000 seat on the board of directors of Tree-House Foods, a major Wal-Mart supplier, early in her husband’s presidential campaign. But, once in the White House, the First Lady quickly returned to flaking for Wal-Mart, praising the anti-union “death star” behemoth’s inner city groceries offensive as part of her White House healthy foods booster duties. She also serves on the board of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the corporate Foreign Policy outfit to which her husband dutifully reported, each year, in his pucker-up to the presidency. The Obama’s are a global capital-loving couple, two cynical lawyers on hire to the wealthiest and the ghastliest. They are no nicer or nasti ...

This world we are living in will never get better! In fact, the bible says, the love of many will wax cold (MAT 24:12)! We can't get it any better than it is right now by voting for the right person who we think is a better choice for our nation. We have to remember that all these catastrophes and tribulations will have to take place and then the end will come as spoken in the Book of Matthew by our LORD JESUS CHRIST! Our future doesn't depend on any man, it only depends on GOD and how we embrace HIS WORD! Our GOD is not as concerned about the world situation as HE is concerned about our soul! HE is so personal! Get right with GOD and follow HIM with all your heart. Quit making decisions based on logical thinking but make a decision for CHRIST JESUS right now!! HE knew global affairs will take place because there is a higher authority at work other than that which HE has established! Hold on to CHRIST and be at peace with yourself and everyone around you! Canada and Australia dominate most 'livable' cities ranking: (yahoo.com) The Economist Intelligence Unit's latest Global Liveability Survey, published this week, ranks 140 cities based on a number of factors including stability, infrastructure and education, among others, with several cities in Canada and Australia making the list. The survey provides a look into the best and worst living conditions of cities around the world. Each city is attributed a score based on more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. The top three remain unchanged from a previous survey by the publication six months ago. With a score of 97.5 out of 100, Melbourne topped the list for the second time in a row, followed by Vienna with a score of 97.4 and Vancouver with a total of 97.3. Toronto comes in fourth place with a score of 97.2 followed by Calgary and Adelaide, tied with a total of 96.6. The success of ...

I disagree with President Obama on many things, but I must posit that it would appear that he and others in our government are consciously trying to keep us out of WWIII by carefully working around the hyperbolic stance of the Israeli government when it comes to Iran...we don't see it here, but the vast majority of Israeli citizens actively protest against a war with Iran...this would be a terrible decision for all of us and our President is between a rock and hard place, for those who understand the nuance of global affairs, and yet clearly he is stonewalling on the issue, which is a credit to him. He is not getting enough credit for this because it requires subtle maneuvering.

Elusive FinSpy Spyware Pops Up in Ethiopia It is one of the more elusive commercial cyberespionage tools available. It is marketed as a way for governments to spy on criminals. And for over a year, virus hunters unsuccessfully tried to track it down. Now it is popping up across the globe, from Qatar to an Amazon server in the United States. FinFisher is a spyware product manufactured by the Gamma Group, a British company that sells surveillance technology. It says its spyware offers “world-class offensive techniques for information gathering.” According to FinFisher’s promotional materials, the spyware can be “used to access target systems, giving full access to stored information with the ability to take control of the target system’s functions to the point of capturing encrypted data and communications.” Security researchers who studied the spyware last month said it can grab images of users’ computer screens, record their Skype chats, remotely turn on cameras and microphones, and log keys ...
The United States Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, has said that scheduling challenges made her trip to Nigeria very short. Clinton, who has just ended a 10-day trip across West, East and South Africa, spent about three hours in discussions with Nigerian authorities while she spent at least a full working day in other countries. While addressing staff of the US Embassy in Abuja on Friday, Clinton said that though the visit was short, it was an important one that shows the “vital relationship” between the two countries which the Embassy staff help to nurture. Her visit to Nigeria was still doubtful when her office released her travel plan without Nigeria included though there had been expectations that Nigeria was part of the original travel plan but was omitted at the last minute. Sources at US State Department at Washington DC and US Embassy in Abuja told LEADERSHIP that Clinton was billed to visit Nigeria last Thursday but the absence of President Goodluck Jonathan, who was then visiting ...

So, Paul Ryan? I was feeling rather lethargic about this 2012 election.but Paul Ryan's budget plans hits me right in the breadbasket...How many kids do I have using college loans? How old (and in need of medicare) are my parents? not to mention what the Ryan budget plan would've done to my VA retirement. Ryan's budget plan was reckless and nailed at the heart of ALL of these things (look it up).while actually LOWERING taxes to the most welathy Americans (look that up, too). Yes, the budget needs balancing but there are people MUCH MORE wealthy than me who see taxes as a nuisance, something that keeps them from having more money...no more, no less...and they have the army of accountants and lawyers to fight that battle. For me and my family? We pay every dime of what my 1040 says we owe...it hurts...and we have to adjust our lives to ensure Uncle Sam gets his cut. I don't expect, nor do I deserve to take any more of the burden. (Look at me, using Republican words "He hits my pocketbook" to describe ...
I just completed Fareed Zakaria's "The Post-American World 2.0." I am aware that Zakaria has recently run into issues regarding plagiarism, but while that diminishes the messenger the message itself was still a good read. I recommend the book, though I can not recommend the author at this time, as a good short read on the shifts in global affairs at this time.
my view is that it is a breach of government protocol and international diplomacy. The Secretary of State is, at best, a common/normal government official and ought to be treated as such and obviously be met by her counterpart in Nigeria. I don't have anything against her meeting Mr. President, in private, but there ought to have been a public forum where it would be obvious to the world that she met the Foreign Affairs Minister or SGF, as the case may be. That is my point. I think its high time we begin to 'respect' ourselves in global affairs. South Africa leads Africa today, not necessarily because it contributes more troops to peace keeping efforts across Africa than Nigeria but because of its doggedness, sound Foreign Policy and finesse in government protocol. I've had to deal with Nigeria's civil service personnel and believe me, majority of them are 'uncultured'. . . Please note, I said majority, not all of them.

There is nothing more important for you to hear, than to daily hear what the Spirit of the God who is living and active in all global affairs wants to speak to you. To adequately hear His voice, you must set aside time alone with Him in quietness, where it’s you and God alone. God speaks in a voice that is still, like the waters of a calm lake, and small so that it fits inside your heart. The reason why political leadership in our country is helter skelter, as The Beatles sang, is because most politicians neither value God, or His voice. Yet, if you want to live following the eyes of The One who sees everything ,develop a daily time in a quiet place where you stop to hear what God wants to tell you, and try to do this daily.

So I'm hearing this morning that THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA will be changing the title of their INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS programs to GLOBAL AFFAIRS...Yale University has already done this and so have hundreds of other universities, think tanks, institutes, etc. across the world. All this has really only happened in the last 10-15 years. It's pretty significant, it shows that the "inter-state" model is being replaced by a more "global" way of trying to understand world happenings...def something to think about this morning as you sip on your coffee and bite into your breakfast burritos! lol

The late president Mills Political Career After performing excellently as the IRS Commissioner, President Rawlings, who has a keen eye for men of hard work, honesty and integrity, chose Prof. Mills as his running mate for the 1996 presidential election. He vigourously campaigned with Rawlings and their NDC won the election. Thus, he became President Rawlings' Vice President from 1997 to 2000. During that period, he was the chairperson of the government's Economic Management Committee. Rawlings handpicked Mills as his successor for the 2000 presidential election but he lost to the NPP's Mr Kufuor due mainly to majority of Ghanaians' desire for change after 11 years rule of the Provisional National Defence Council military regime and eight years of the NDC administration. In 2002, Prof. Mills was a visiting scholar at the Liu Centre for the Study of Global Affairs, University of British Columbia, Canada. Elected the NDC's standard-bearer, he contested the 2004 presidential election and again lost to Preside ...

Effective Leadership in the 21st Century should increase operational efficiency for achieving the desired results and govern the actions & decisions of an individual or group by managing the global affairs taking into account the environmental, economic, social, geographical and political aspects and treat social & practical decisions ethically, i.e., moral principles and values that comprises of honesty, trust, treating others fairly & loyally. Although, ethical perception may vary from person to person, among societies and countries, yet, corrupt and unscrupulous practices, working hand-in-hand with greedy investors, should not put private gain before the welfare of citizens and the economic development. The effective leadership should also have the courage to accept the criticism and keep far away from sycophancy. The performance of a leader should be measured by these key metrics and judged by how far one has succeeded in achieving the desired results in order to achieve the goal of sustainable develo ...

On the heels of another American atrocity, the debate concerning the Second Amendment and its applicability in today’s society takes center stage.
A man and his friend stood at the curb. He said "we'll cross after that bus goes by. His friend attempted to cross. He pulled his friend back with a strong jerk, asking "are u so blind that u don't see the bus?" The friend said "there is no bus." [ Truth is not based on personal perception (subjectivism) but upon universal reality (objectivism). Jesus said to the people who believed in him, "You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (Jn 8:31+32) Then He said : "I am the TRUTH" (Jn. 14:6). Punchline : It does not matter what we think of something, evidence determines Truth. U whip out a measuring tape and see which man was tallest in the village. Likewise you research the overwhelming effect of Jesus Christ and His Word on the world and we see Him in all global affairs and in lives being transformed everywhere. [The law of Non-Contradiction states that 2 opposing claims cannot both be true]. Its either the bus or its yo ...

Amazing morning at the Young Atlanticist Summit hearing from NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and representatives of the Atlantic Council, the Atlantic Treaty Association, and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Interesting thoughts from Fogh Rasmussen on the link between the economy and security -- "You can't be safe if you're broke." My question -- is Smart Defense actually doing more with less or a nice phrase for what is actually doing less with less?

Monsanto Company recently announced a $50 million commitment to "help" (destroy) African Agricultural Development at the G8 Summit on Global Agriculture And Food Security, hosted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum. How can a company that produces genetically modified seeds (that cannot be replanted) for both small and large scale farming be a sustainable solution to food crisis? This seeds have been genetically altered from their natural form to make unnatural, and is not save for human consumption. To elaborate further, below is an informative article written by James Donahue titled "Monsanto’s Evil Plot To Control World Seeds". Please read and increase your awareness: Since the first commercial cultivation of genetically modified farm crops in 1996, the use of plants modified for tolerant to herbicides and insecticides has grown until it dominates the agricultural seed market. This is especially true for soybean, corn, canola and cotton among other ...
Hey everyone, let's support this very cool initiative, and even help shape it. How refreshing that in our current "government" by dictatorship of private vested interests, the Greens are coming up with something genuinely alternative to offer NZ and the World. An original, principled, wise and creative outlook is just what we need to replace the weird, dated and dangerous "Foreign Affairs" concept we presently have. Hope to see you there. Green MP Dr Kennedy Graham. would like to invite you and your colleagues to the launch of the Green’s Global Affairs tour. The tour begins at the University of Canterbury, on Friday 25 May, in Laws 108 at 6pm. This event is open to the public so feel free to invite anyone else who might be interested. The Global Affairs tour is about the Green Party relooking at its Foreign Policy. It may be of interest to those involved in peace, human rights, sustainability, disarmament, aid and development groups, or those who just have an interest in how New Zealand relates to t ...
Congratulations to my terrific daughter Rebecca Novick upon her graduation from American University with a masters degree in Peace Ethics and Global Affairs. May all your dreams come true. We all love you.
Leaders from around the world are gathering in Chicago this spring for an important diplomatic summit hosted by President Barack Obama. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold meetings in Chicago from May 20-21, allowing the city to highlight its economic vitality, its arts and architecture, and its can-do spirit. This will be the first time an American city other than Washington has hosted a NATO summit. About 2,000 journalists from across the world are expected in Chicago to chronicle the events. While the summit itself will be closed to the public, the Chicago NATO Host Committee is making plans for a variety of programs to inform our community about this historic event. Through our partners such as The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, World Sport Chicago, and Illinois Restaurant Association, the Host Committee has organized lectures on Foreign Affairs, contests for students, special dining programs, and much more.
