CINEMA & CULTURE not to miss, the François Truffaut exhibition at "la cinématheque Française de Paris" 8 octobre 2014 - 1er février 2015 François Roland Truffaut ( 6 February 1932 – 21 October 1984) was a French film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film critic, as well as one of the founders of the French New Wave. In a film career lasting over a quarter of a century, he remains an icon of the French film industry, having worked on over 25 films. Truffaut's film The 400 Blows came to be a defining film of the French New Wave movement. After starting his own film club in 1948, Truffaut met André Bazin, who would have great effect on his professional and personal life. Bazin was a critic and the head of another film society at the time. He became a personal friend of Truffaut's and helped him out of various financial and criminal situations during his formative years. Truffaut joined the French Army in 1950, aged 18, but spent the next two years trying to escape. Truffaut was arrested f ...
Morning Please share to the whole of the UK so everyone can see what is underneath all Labours Lies. The last line says it all. Written by Ralph (Formerly Adolphe) Miliband, Ed Miliband's Father. "The Englishman is a rabid nationalist. They are perhaps the most nationalist people in the world ... When you hear the English talk of this war you sometimes almost want them to lose it to show them how things are. They have the greatest contempt for the continent in general and for the French in particular. They didn't like the French before the defeat … Since the defeat, they have the greatest contempt for the French Army ... England first. This slogan is taken for granted by the English people as a whole. To lose their empire would be the worst possible humiliation."

Today in Military History, September 9, 1825: U.S.S. Brandywine (1825) departs New York City with one of our nations most valuable Allies ever, Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette, the Marquis de Lafayette. Brandywine, only commissioned on August 25, 1825, will sail on her first mission to return Lafayette to France after his Grand Tour of the United States which began with his arrival in New York City on August 15, 1824. Lafayette had visited every U.S. state of the time and had stayed in every major U.S. city which then existed. He was escorted during his visit by the members of each states National Guard, a military unit that he had established in France as the La Garde Nationale during the French Revolution and was naturally placed in command of. As Lafayette visited each area and when he slept in the city's hotel's, the members of that states National Guard protected him at all times due to their great loyalties and admiration of the man that they saw as their services founder ...

During the royal wedding, millions around the world saw that Prince William chose to wear a uniform that included the famous British "red coat." Many people have asked, "Why did the British wear red coats in battle?" A long time ago, Britain and France were at war. (they still are really) During one battle, the French captured a British Colonel. They took him to their headquarters and the French General began to question him. Finally, as an afterthought, the French General asked, "Why do you British officers all wear red coats? Don't you know the red material makes you easier targets for us to shoot at?" In his casual, matter-of-fact, way, the officer informed the General that the reason British officers wear red coats is so that if they are wounded, the blood won't show, …and the men they are leading won't panic. And that’s why, from that day forward, all French Army officers have worn brown trousers ….

When President Laurent Gbagbo of Côte d’Ivoire tried to end the French exploitation of the country, France organized a coup. During the long process to oust Gbagbo, France's tanks, helicopter gunships and Special Forces intervened directly in the conflict, fired on civilians and killed many. To add insult to injury, France estimated that the French business community had lost several millions of dollars when in the rush to leave Abidjan in 2006 the French Army massacred 65 unarmed civilians and wounded 1,200 others. After France succeeded in the coup, and transferred power to Alassane Outtara, France requested that the Ouattara government pay compensation to French business community for their losses during the civil war. Indeed the Ouattara government paid them twice what they said they had lost in leaving!

Marc Bloch, scientific integrity and Jewish-Palestinian conflict. Scientists are human and as such, they have feelings. While it is impossible to keep personal feelings and prejudices completely separated from scientific analysis, a scientist should at least aspire to it. Let's look at Marc Bloch for an example. Marc Bloch, one of the greatest French historians, a founder of Annales School, and a Jew loved France. In 1939, at the age of 53, he volunteered for French Army. He fought in the Army, then in Resistance, till Germans captured, tortured and killed him in 1944. He sacrificed his life for his country. While fighting, he wrote a book "The Strange Defeat" about the causes of French failure in WWII. There, Bloch's shame, confusion and despair of France seep through the dry lines of a history text. Still, he never allowed his feelings to interfere with the quality of the scholarship. Prof. Rashid Khalidi of Columbia University and Dr. Dennis Prager have, respectively, strong pro-Palestinian and pro-Is ...

By Mary Bellis The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide. It is estimated that over 100,000 patents created the modern automobile. However, we can point to the many firsts that occurred along the way. Starting with the first theoretical plans for a motor vehicle that had been drawn up by both Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton. In 1769, the very first self-propelled road vehicle was a military tractor invented by French engineer and mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot (1725 - 1804). Cugnot used a steam engine to power his vehicle, built under his instructions at the Paris Arsenal by mechanic Brezin. It was used by the French Army to haul artillery at a whopping speed of 2 1/2 mph on only three wheels. The vehicle had to stop every ten to fifteen minutes to build up steam power. The steam engine and boiler were separate from the rest of the vehicle and placed in the front (see engraving above ...

Friendly is not Mexican Independence. That would be September 16! Today is when Puebla, MX defeated the French Army. For more information, ask Siri "Why do some Americans think today is Mexican Independence Day?" Today is also "National Hug Your *** Filipino-Mexican-American Friend" Day. :D hehe
¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo a nuestros amigos! Literally "the Fifth of May," Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. Fighting a much better equipped and much larger French Army, the Mexicans made a valiant stand, and, against all logic, won a huge victory. The euphoria of an unlikely victory against overwhelming odds is remembered every May fifth. In many USA cities with large Hispanic populations, there are parades, dancing and festivals. Traditional food is often served and Mariachi bands fill town squares. It’s a fun holiday, really more about celebrating the Hispanic way of life than about remembering a battle which happened 150 years ago. It is sometimes referred to as a “Mexican St. Patrick’s Day.”
Today In Black History • April 28, 1891 George Toliver of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania received patent number 451,086 for his invention of a new propeller for vessels. His invention was simple, durable, and efficient in providing motive power to force vessels through water and thereby gaining speed and economizing power. Not much else is known of Toliver’s life. • April 28, 1901 Needham Roberts, one of the first Americans to receive the French Croix de Guerre medal, was born in Trenton, New Jersey. Roberts enlisted in the United States Army in 1917 and was assigned to the New York Fifteenth Infantry which later became the 369th Infantry Harlem Hellfighters. They were sent to France during World War I and put under the command of the French Army. On May 14, 1918, Roberts and fellow African American Henry Johnson were on watch in the Argonne Forest when they were attacked by about 20 German soldiers. Despite being wounded several times, they fought off the attack and defended the French line. For their ...
Waterman Tavern, also known as Waterman's Tavern on Maple Valley Road near Whaley's Hollow in Coventry, Rhode Island. It is a historic building that was along the march route of Count de Rochambeau's army. The tavern was built in 1744 and was used for town meetings until the new Town House was constructed in 1835 at Maple Valley Road and Matteson. The tavern also had stocks and a whipping post in front of it for punishment of crimes. During the Revolutionary War, the French Army under Rochambeau camped near the Tavern while marching to Virginia in 1781 and on their return in 1782. The officers stayed in the house

I hope you all like this rather obscure piece of rather obscure history. Ramon Guthrie was born in New York City on January 1, 1896; the son of Harry and Ella May Hollister Guthrie. Sometime in 1898-1899 the marriage of his parents failed and he along with his mother and baby sister Eleanor moved to Hartford, Connecticut. He attended public school in Hartford and by the time he was nineteen he was working at the Winchester Arms factory in New Haven. In 1916 he enlisted in the Connecticut National Guard, serving with the 10th Connecticut Field Artillery Regiment. That same year his mother committed suicide. Soon after Ramon resigned from the National Guard and enlisted in the French Army as a volunteer ambulance driver with the American Field Service. (The American Field Service was an off-shoot of volunteer ambulance drivers that served at the American Hospital in Paris. I've been researching French Canadian colonist Pierre Bissonnet (b. 1626, La Roche-Sur-Yon, Lucon, Poitou, France; died Aug 7, 1687 La Durantaye, Quebec; married, among others, Marie D'Aulonne Oct. 9, 1668 Pointe au Cedres, Quebec) and was wondering if anyone found documentation that he was sent to Canada as a member of the French Army and attained the rank of major. Tanguay and most other sources refer to him as a farmer, or miller; however, an article in the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society Collection, Vol.38, p.502 indicates military service.
HISTORY: NAPOLEONIC FRENCH COLUMN VS BRITISH LINE March 12, 2014 - Black Powder, Napoleonic Wars 1789-1815, Uniforms & History - Tagged: Black Powder, British, French The clashes between British and French forces during the Napoleonic wars saw two rather different approaches go head-to-head – the British firing line and the French attack column… THE FRENCH ATTACK COLUMN Having suffered many defeats during the 18th Century, some in the French Army had become convinced that the advance to contact or ‘shock’ action should be carried forward by battalions in a greater depth than the standard linear formations. This would mean that fire power would be reduced as fewer muskets could be brought to bear, but this would be compensated for by men thrown out in a thick swarm of skirmishers. We have seen that the levee en masse had given France hundreds of thousands of citizen soldiers fired by revolutionary zeal, but with little concept of training and discipline. The Attack column made the most of the troop ...
Black History Month African Americans comprised 13% of active duty manpower during World War I with roughly 200,000 being deployed to Europe. They served with distinction in the American Expeditionary Force and French Army but their service and contributions are often forgotten. When the U.S. declared war on Germany, in April 1917, racial discrimination and segregation policies had been in place in America for 21 years (1896 Plessy v. Ferguson). Despite those “separate but equal” policies, thousands of loyal African Americans enlisted for U.S. military service. The Army established four segregated units of African American soldiers during World War I while the Navy’s segregation policy, at the time, accepted very few African Americans. The Marines accepted none. A majority of African Americans served in supply or labor battalions, but a few units actually went into battle overseas. The 369th regiment, known as “the Harlem Hellfighters,” was one of a few African American units that saw actio ...
HISTORY OF AUTOMOBILE. The first working steam-powered vehicle was designed — and most likely built — by Ferdinand Verbiest, a Flemish member of a Jesuit mission in China around 1672. It was a 65 cm-long scale-model toy for the Chinese Emperor, that was unable to carry a driver or a passenger.[10][11][12] It is not known if Verbiest's model was ever built.[11] Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot is widely credited with building the first full-scale, self-propelled mechanical vehicle or automobile in about 1769; he created a steam-powered tricycle.[13] He also constructed two steam tractors for the French Army, one of which is preserved in the French National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts.[14] His inventions were however handicapped by problems with water supply and maintaining steam pressure.[14] In 1801, Richard Trevithick built and demonstrated his Puffing Devil road locomotive, believed by many to be the first demonstration of a steam-powered road vehicle. It was unable to maintain sufficient steam pressure fo ...

To My Favorite 17-Year-Old High School Girl Do you realize that if you had started building the Parthenon on the day you were born, you would be all done in only one more year? Of course, you couldn't have done that all alone. So never mind; you’re fine just being yourself. You’re loved for just being you. But did you know that at your age Judy Garland was pulling down 150,000 dollars a picture, Joan of Arc was leading the French army to victory and Blaise Pascal had cleaned up his room — no wait, I mean he had invented the calculator? Of course, there will be time for all that later in your life, after you come out of your room and begin to blossom, or at least pick up all your socks. For some reason I keep remembering that Lady Jane Grey was queen of England when she was only 15. But then she was beheaded, so never mind her as a role model. A few centuries later, when he was your age, Franz Schubert was doing the dishes for his family, but that did not keep him from composing two symphonies, four ...

"More than five million German soldiers in the American and French zones were crowded into barbed wire cages, many of them literally shoulder to shoulder. The ground beneath them soon became a quagmire of filth and disease. Open to the weather, lacking even primitive sanitary facilities, underfed, the prisoners soon began dying of starvation and disease. Starting in April 1945, the United States Army and the French Army casually annihilated about one million men, most of them in American camps. Eisenhower's hatred, passed through the lens of a compliant military bureaucracy, produced the horror of death camps unequaled by anything in American history ... an enormous war crime." -Colonel Ernest F. Fisher Ph.D. (retired), 101st Airborne Division, a former Senior Historian of the United States Army Center of Military History and post-war investigator of US military misconduct in Germany " is hard to escape the conclusion that Dwight Eisenhower was a war criminal of epic proportions. Aviator sunglasses, or "pilot's glasses", were originally developed in 1936 by Ray-Ban for pilots to protect their eyes while flying. Aviators were given their name due to their original intention of protecting aviator's eyes. Ray-Ban began selling the glasses to the public a year after they were developed. The Aviator became a well-known style of sunglasses when General Douglas MacArthur landed on the beach in the Philippines in World War II. Newspaper photographers snapped several pictures of him wearing them. The style was also issued to and found popularity with the French Army. Aviator sunglasses became fashionable in the 1960s, but their popularity would increase following pop culture references by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Freddie Mercury, and later use by celebrities in films like Top Gun, where Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards sported them (sales of the brand rose 40% in the 7 months following the release of the film). Ray Ban aviators were also prominently featured in the films Cob ...
Fact probably had mixed feelings about July 4th because on that date in 1754, as a young man in command of the Virginia colonial militia, he had been forced to surrender to a French army and sign a document that essentially was a confession of murdering a French diplomat. The history of the Big Canoe Lutheran Church dates back to 1851 when the first Europeans began settlement in the Decorah area. The land was almost entirely forest. The first Norwegian settlers were from Voss, Hallingdal and Numedal, in west central Norway. At one time, Highland Township, just north of the Big Canoe Church was 100 percent Norwegian. One reason for that was the fact that the Norwegian settlers had been farmers in Norway that there was land available for farming in Iowa. In 1850, Halsten Stoen and his sons homesteaded 640 acres in Winneshiek County, Iowa and were willing to provide work and board for many who came from Norway. Visitors always ask about the church's unusual name. "Big Canoe" is not a Biblical name, or is it even a Norwegian name. Big Canoe was a Winnebago Indian chief. In 1730, his grandmother married a French Army officer named Sabrevoir De Carrie. He resigned from the army, joined the tribe, and worked as a fur trader. They had two sons and a daughter, and from the sons cam ...

“A study of our past can give us a lesson in government. Thanks to the matriarchal system, our ancestors prior to any foreign influence had given woman a choice place. They saw her not as sex object but as mother. This has been true from the Egypt of the Pharaohs until our time. Women participated in running public affairs within the framework of a feminine assembly, sitting separately but having the same prerogatives as the male assembly.” “These facts remained unchanged until the colonial conquest, especially is such non-Islamized States as the Yoruban and Dahomean. Behanzin’s military resistance to the French Army under Colonel Dodds is said to have resulted from a decision of the women’s assembly of the kingdom, meeting at night after the men had met during the day and reversing them by ordering mobilization and war—after which, the men ratified the decision.” “Black Africa had its specific bicameralism, determined by sex. Far from interfering with national life by pitting men against ...

UNE DATE - UNE HISTOIRE 1758 - JEAN JACQUES DESSALINES Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Haitian Creole: Janjak Desalin) (20 September 1758 – 17 October 1806) was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1801 constitution. Initially regarded as Governor-General, Dessalines later named himself Emperor Jacques I of Haiti (1804–1806). He is regarded as a founding father of Haiti.[1] Dessalines served as an officer in the French army when the colony was trying to withstand Spanish and British incursions. Later he rose to become a commander in the revolt against France. As Toussaint Louverture's principal lieutenant, he led many successful engagements, including the Battle of Crête-à-Pierrot. After the betrayal and capture of Toussaint Louverture in 1802, Dessalines became the leader of the revolution. He defeated Napoleon's forces at the Battle of Vertières in 1803. Declaring Haiti an independent nation in 1804, Dessalines was chosen by a council of generals to as ...
Brother Francklin Armand was born on September 16, 1947 in Port-au-Prince the capital of Haiti. From the age of 3 months he was raised by his loving godparents. His godfather was in the military and imprisoned twice under the dictatorship of Duvalier because he could not, in good conscience, support the oppressive actions of his own government against its people. As a young boy, Francklin became fascinated by the life of rural peasant farmers and their families. Since his earliest childhood, friends and family knew that he had been touched by God. At the age of 17, Francklin entered religious life as a postulant of the Little Brothers of St Theresa of the Infant Jesus. By the time he was 28 years old, he was superior general of that community. Eleven years of religious life had prepared the way for what was to become "a call within a call" (to paraphrase Mother Theresa of Calcutta). As a young man of 28, Brother Francklin encountered Charles de Foucauld (Brother Charles of Jesus) during a retreat and thro ...

Story of the Battle of the Bulge Torwards the end of 1944 Wehrmacht forces were exhausted by a series of defeats on both Eastern and Western fronts, as well as devastating Allied bombing raids, that had crippled German military and industrial infrastructure. American and British troops already reached the borders of Germany itself. However, facing considerable supply issues they were unable to deliver reinforcements to the front lines quickly, and thus had to stop the advancement into the hilly and forested area of Ardennes by the middle of December 1944. The German generals were desperately looking for a possibility to turn the tides of the campaign on the Western front. As History shows, took the pause in the Allied advance needed for regrouping for a sign of weekness. Hitler wanted to repeat the success of the 1940 strike against the French army when a great German force suddenly traversed the Ardennes forest to flank the French troops entrenched on the Maginot line. WHO DO YOU DO 4 ~ Joan of Arc (Jeanne D'Arc) " I die for speaking the message of angels". (I trust it won't come to that for me in this lifetime!) Martyr, saint and military leader Joan of Arc, acting under divine guidance, led the French army to victory over the British during the Hundred Years' War. I look to this feisty and indomitable lady who makes my list for her no nonsense, can do attitude and fierce commitment to her purpose. I would definitely want her on my side when push came to shove. Joan was burned alive by the English in the marketplace of Rouen on May 30th 1431, not for speaking with angels but for the spurious crime of wearing mens clothing and dressing like a man which apparently violated a biblical injunction. for goodness sake, she was a warrior. . . she could hardly turn up in a teafrock and a nice cardi now could she?! WHY DOES THE AU STILL ALLOW ALIEN MILITARY INTERVENTIONS IN AFRIKAN AFFAIRS? Central African Republic: France to Seek European Contribution to CAR Intervention 16 December 2013 , Source: RFI France will ask its European Union partners to do more to help its intervention in the strife-torn Central African Republic, Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius said on Sunday ahead of a meeting in Brussels on Monday. "Tomorrow I will go to the Foreign Affairs Council and I will ask that there be more solid, stronger support," Fabius said Sunday on Europe 1 radio. Poland, Britain, Germany, Spain and Belgium are already helping with logistics, he said, and two countries are "currently considering" sending troops to back up the 1,600 soldiers there. Nearly half of the 4.5-million population is in "pre-famine conditions", according to the minister, and there are only seven surgeons among that number. Fabius rejected claims that the French army has precipitated the massacre of Muslims by disarming the former Seleka re ...

In the name of the ' social contract ' ( the European Union ), is a democratic country , deprived of its sovereignty . We saw this in the financial dependence of Greece. Apparently , the EU has been so great that the Greek Parliament , austerity proposals from Brussels only with a nod , could confirm. Previously , we saw that fades , Democracy , ( the power of the people ) from Europe . The actual dismantling of the Greek nation-state , is only the beginning of this process , at the international level . The transfer of this power , which every citizen in Europe , is against , will lead to the power of the Anti- Christ . In Central Africa , the French army , fighting against recently Seleka rebels , mostly Muslim rebels . The aim of the rebels , is the killing of the Jew , and the Christians . Commitment to Our King And He hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords. -Revelation 19:16 One of the greatest military victories of all time was when Henry V and his troops went into France to face the enemy at Agincourt. Although the French army greatly outnumbered the English army, the French lost the battle and suffered approximately 10,000 casualties to only 400 English causalities. This battle has been immortalized by Shakespeare. On the morning of the battle, Henry's men grabbed the dirt beneath them and placed the dirt in their mouth to symbolically pledge they were prepared to die on that ground. What level of commitment are we willing to pledge our King? -J.
