Today, July 28th, we celebrate the birthday of James Presley Ball, Sr. (July 28, 1825 – May 4, 1904); a prominent African-American photographer, abolitionist, and businessman. Ball was born in Frederick County, Virginia to William and Susan Ball in 1825. He learned daguerreotype photography from John B. Bailey of Boston, who like Ball was "a freeman of color." Ball opened a one-room daguerreotype studio in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1845. The business did not prosper, so Ball worked as an itinerant daguerreotypist, settling briefly in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, then in Richmond, Virginia in 1846 to develop a more successful studio near the State Capitol building. In 1847, Ball again departed for Ohio, again as a traveling daguerreotypist. He settled in Cincinnati in 1849 and opened a studio where his brother Thomas Ball became an operator. The gallery, known as "Ball's Daguerrean Gallery of the West" or "Ball's Great Daguerrean Gallery of the West," ascended "from a small gallery to one of the great galleries o ...

Today is primary day! As I reflect back on this campaign, as I am sure most other candidates are doing, I am so proud of what has been accomplished and humbled by the support I have gotten. I started out as someone who just wanted to make a difference in the lives of my own children, but I have seen past my own family and realized how education affects not only the children in our community but the community as a whole. I have learned so much. I was especially touch by the amount of concern and support that I received when my Mom got so sick and how understanding everyone has been as I have taken care of her. Today is an important day, not just for me, but for all of Frederick County. Please, get out and vote today. Voting is how we create positive change and I want to be part of that positive change.

Thank you for helping us find great spots for the big signs. Chuck Jenkins has been Sheriff for 8 years, and these are his accomplishments: •Crime is up 14% while every neighboring county had a decrease in crime. •Wasteful spending by Sheriff Jenkins, to include a $40,000 truck for his use •Heroin epidemic and still no plan to combat it announced by Frederick Co Sheriff’s Office •Increase in law suits/settlements against Frederick Co Sherif ...

Our National Anthem In Sept. 1814, Francis Scott Key pens a poem which is later set to music and in 1931 becomes America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." The poem, originally titled "The Defence of Fort McHenry," was written after Key witnessed the Maryland fort being bombarded by the British during the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the sight of a lone U.S. flag still flying over Fort McHenry at daybreak, as reflected in the now-famous words of the "Star-Spangled Banner": "And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there." Francis Scott Key was born on August 1, 1779, at Terra Rubra, his family's estate in Frederick County (now Carroll County), Maryland. He became a successful lawyer in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and was later appointed U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. On June 18, 1812, America declared war on Great Britain after a series of trade disagreements. In August 1814, British troops invaded Washingto ...

Father in child abuse death may seek “not criminally responsible” plea. The father charged with the child abuse death of his 21-month-old daughter may file a “not criminally responsible” plea to first-degree murder and the other charges he faces, his attorney said in Frederick County Circuit Court on Monday. It was the first appearance for Frankie Aubrey Williams after he was indicted by the Frederick County grand jury in April. Williams is charged with first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree child abuse, two counts of first-degree assault, second-degree child abuse and second-degree assault. The charges relate to the death of Anayah Neveah Williams in March and earlier abuse from September 2012. At that time, Anayah was removed from her parents' care and diagnosed with a permanent injury, cerebral palsy. She had been returned to their custody about three weeks before her death. Other charges against Frankie Williams reflect the abuse of Anayah's 5-month-old sister earlier in March, when ...

I’ve known as long as I can remember I knew that I was named after my mother’s father Edward Yerbury Goldsborough. By all accounts, he was a poor example of a father. He left my grandmother to raise my mother and her sister. So during the depths of the Great Depression, my grandmother raised two able- bodied and determined girls to become formidable women. I have always been proud of the women on my mother’s side. But the man I was named after has always been a blank shadow, more of a placeholder than a person. But today I googled his name (and mine) and found his father. Having read the History of Frederick County, I find it casts some light on the shadow. Some of you who are family may enjoy reading this.

Yesterday's mystery picture was Frederick College, and today is the location of the old C. Burr Artz Library. Located at the corner of Council and Record Streets, Frederick College was built in 1796, and opened for students in 1797. Nicknamed "The Academy," the college educated young men for 120 years. The College Board included prominent Frederick County citizens such as Roger Brooke Taney, who served on the Board of Visitors for fifteen years, before moving to Washington. The College closed in 1916, and the Frederick County Free Library occupied the building for the next twenty years. In 1936, after the Artz family donated money to fund a new library, to be named in honor of the late Mr. C. Burr Artz, Frederick College was razed in order to construct the new library. -Megan
District 3 and the citizens of Frederick County need leadership that is going to be effective and work for them. I know this because I am you. I was raised in Frederick and educated through Frederick County public school. As an adult, I have chosen to stay and work in Frederick County. My work has included many different roles in business and in Frederick County government. I know what Frederick needs and I not only plan to help us get there but to lead us there. A vote for me on June 24th is a vote towards a better tomorrow for Frederick County.

people beware were ever you go check this out FREDERICK COUNTY, Va. - The Frederick County Sheriff's Office arrested a West Virginia man after he attempted to rob a local bank in a ski mask, before bank employees spotted him and locked him out of the building. The incident happened Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the Capon Valley Bank on 6701 Northwestern Pike in Gore, Virginia. Employees told deputies that a customer entered the bank advising a man had drove through their parking lot area wearing a ski mask, and believed they were about to be robbed. The witness gave the employees a car description then left the bank. Deputies say the bank employees locked the doors to the business to prevent anyone from entering until law enforcement could arrive. A few minutes later, a vehicle similar to the one described by the customer was seen re-entering the parking lot. The vehicle parked, and a man was seen walking to the front doors of the bank wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and orange ski mask, police say. ...

Ladies and gentlemen, After much deliberation, I am glad -- no -- honored to announce my candidacy for County Executive of Frederick County. I look forward to a vigorous campaign on the issues in the coming weeks and months. At the moment, I wish to unveil only one part of my platform: Making Frederick County a proper English-only speaking and writing community that understands and appreciates how Things should Be Done. To that end, we will return to proper British spelling conventions: For example, "re" instead of "er" at the end of words like "fibre," "centre" and "theatre." "Aluminium," instead of "aluminum." I will also launch a U-reinsertion program. No longer will you have to suffer a vowel deficit with words such as "color" (colour), "flavor" (flavour) and "humor" (humour). Starting immediately on Day One of my administration, the rules of grammar will be anglicized. Periods will be referred to as "full stops"; exclamation marks will once again be "exclamation points"; the comma will appear outside ...

Ashby Family The name of Ashby is found in the early records of the colony of Virginia, but the direct pedigree of the family in this county has been traced only from the beginning of the eighteenth century. . The immediate ancestor of our Virginia branch of the Ashby family, was Captain Thomas Ashby, who located about 1700 , in what is now Fauquier County, and removed later into the Shenandoah Valley. He died in 1752, his will being probated in Frederick County, Virginia. His landed estate was quite large and was divided amongst the following children: Robert Ashby born 1715 in Virginia. Robert Ashby died 27 February,1792 in Fauquier County Virginia. Thomas Ashby born 1771 in Virginia died 1797. John Ashby born 1719 in Fauquier county, Virginia died 1789 in Winchester, Fauquier, Virginia. Elizabeth Ashby born 1721 in Virginia. Posted: March 22, 2014 By MELISSA BOUGHTON, THe Winchester Star WINCHESTER — It’s been more than a year since 18-year-old Hunter Crane died, but one of his dreams will soon be realized. An episode of “Fly Rod Chronicles with Curtis Fleming,” scheduled to air next week on the Outdoor Channel, will feature footage and interviews with Hunter’s friends and family, memorializing the avid hunter and the community that rallied around his family after his death. Hunter, a James Wood High School senior, died in a single-vehicle crash near Capon Bridge, W.Va., on Jan. 15, 2013. “He and his daddy spent many hours watching hunting and fishing shows and always said, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be so cool to be on one of those shows,’” Tina Crane said. “In the most terrible of circumstances, [Fleming] made Hunter’s dream come true.” The episode was filmed on April 20 during a *** shooting and fly-fishing rodeo at Landfall Farms — owned by Lowell Henderson and Dr. Audi Wynn — in Frederick County. Our 200 Year History Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, the second-oldest Catholic theologate in the United States, opened its doors in 1808. Fr. John DuBois, the Mount’s founder and a refugee from the French revolution, arrived in the United States in 1791 bearing a letter of introduction from Lafayette, whose wife he had once counted among his parishioners. Fr. DuBois made the acquaintance of many of the Founding Fathers of the Republic, and offered his services to the first Catholic bishop in the United States, the Most Reverend John Carroll of Baltimore. His mission territory extended through central Maryland and the Blue Ridge country. Shortly after founding St. John’s Church in Frederick, Maryland, the circuit-riding priest resolved to purchase for himself a small tract of land in northern Frederick County, not far from the Pennsylvania border, where earlier Catholic colonists from southern Maryland had christened the adjacent summit “Mount St. Mary.” The missionary also desired to affiliate himse ...
Some facts about the winter we have suffered through this year: In some parts of Frederick County, such as where I live, the kids have not had a full week of school since mid-December, between holidays, snow days, and days when it was just too *** cold to send your kids to stand at the bus stop. There have been 4 deaths in Maryland from heart attacks while shoveling heavy snow, three 50-something men and one 64-year-old woman. It has snowed more than 30 times since mid-November, totaling 2 feet of snow around DC and more than 4½ feet of it here on the mountain over the season. Today, March 4, the ground is still covered after the latest "monster" storm. We have had 4 months of bitterly cold winter and are entering the fifth. Next Saturday we will finally approach the average temperature for one day, but then it will drop to ten degrees below average again. What can I say but Gaaah! Make it stop!!

Action Alert: Minimum Wage The Maryland General Assembly is considering several bills that would increase the minimum wage in Maryland. The House Economic Matters and Senate Finance Committees will hold hearings for these bills next week. Raising the minimum wage would help increase wages for direct support professionals who provide critical supports to people with developmental disabilities, IF the state provides the funding needed to do so. Increasing the minimum wage for Maryland without additional funding from the Developmental Disabilities Administration will make many direct support positions minimum wage. The Arc of Frederick County strongly believes that direct support positions should NOT be minimum wage jobs. Direct support professionals provide critical support to people with developmental disabilities and meet many requirements in order to assist people to live and work in the Frederick community. Help us by asking members of the House Economic Matters Committee and Senate Finance Committe ...
James Beckwourth James Pierson Beckwourth (April 6, 1798 Frederick County, Virginia – October 29, 1866, Denver) was an American mountain man, fur trader, and explorer. An African American born into slavery in Virginia, he was freed by his father (and master) and apprenticed to a blacksmith;; later he moved to the American West. As a fur trapper, he lived with the Crow for years. He is credited with the discovery of Beckwourth Pass through the Sierra Nevada (U.S.) Mountains between present-day Reno, Nevada and Portola, California during the California Gold Rush years, and improved the Beckwourth Trail, which thousands of settlers followed to central California. He narrated his life story to Thomas D. Bonner, an itinerant justice of the peace. The book was published in New York and London in 1856 as The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth: Mountaineer, Scout and Pioneer, and Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians. A translation was published in France in 1860. Early historians of the Old West origina ...

Concord mod of Jimmy Kendle, Up In Smoke John Deere of Steve Beckley, and the IH's Internationally Known and Smokin Red of Ben Flaherty as well as the Ammons family who pull Redlined Harvester all call Hagerstown, Maryland home. Hagerstown is a city in Washington County, Maryland. It is the county seat of Washington County, and by many definitions, the largest city in a region known as Western Maryland (if you exclude Frederick County from Western Maryland). The population of Hagerstown city proper at the 2010 census was 39,662, and the population of the Hagerstown-Martinsburg Metropolitan Area (extending into West Virginia) was 269,140. Hagerstown ranks as Maryland's sixth largest city Hagerstown has a distinct topography, formed by stone ridges running from northeast to southwest through the center of town. Geography accordingly bounds its neighborhoods. These ridges consist of upper Stonehenge limestone. Many of the older buildings were built from this stone, which is easily quarried and dressed onsite ...
* * TODAY IN HISTORY * * Today is Saturday, Nov. 23, the 327th day of 2013. There are just 38 days left in the year. Today's Highlight in History: On Nov. 23, 1936, Life, the photojournalism magazine created by Henry R. Luce (loos), was first published. On this date: In 1765, Frederick County, Md. became the first colonial entity to repudiate the British Stamp Act. In 1804, the 14th president of the United States, Franklin Pierce (puhrs), was born in Hillsboro, N.H. In 1889, the first jukebox made its debut in San Francisco, at the Palais Royale Saloon. In 1903, Enrico Caruso made his American debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, appearing in "Rigoletto." In 1910, American-born physician Hawley Harvey Crippen was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London for murdering his wife, Cora. (Crippen's mistress, Ethel Le Neve, was acquitted in a separate trial of being an accessory.) In 1943, during World War II, U.S. forces seized control of Tarawa and Makin (MAH'-kihn) atolls from the Japanese. In 19 ...

The main existing Indian Tribe near Frederick seems to be the Piscataway which are MD State recognized (finally), but as is often the case not Federally recognized.   The Piscataway are a sub-tribe of the Conoy Tribe, one of the most prominent historic tribes of the Chesapeake Bay area. Their Algonquin dialect evolved from Nanticoke, having established roots here over 10,000 years ago as hunters and gatherers. They lived very much like the Potowomac Tribe, along the Potomac River; by 800 AD they grew maize, beans, squash, and pumpkins. Today there are 2 main Piscataway groups in Southern MD: The Nation (Chief Tayak), and The Tribe (Confederacy and Cedarville Band). They have no reservation land.   2010: Frederick County had 800+ Residents that considered themselves Native American; Maryland Indians total: 25,000+ of which 8,000+ are Piscataway. Together with dramatic decreases in population due to disease, when American Indian reservations were dissolved by the Maryland Colony in the eighteenth century, ...

Please take a minute to pray for them, and to thank those who serve and protect.

Campaign Update: Friends, I plan on using my social media platforms to provide brief updates on the progress of our campaign. Many of you have invested your time and money in me and deserve to know how we are doing. Here is our first one covering the past week. We helped coordinate an extremely successful protest in Carroll County at the Rep. Van Hollen Townhall event where local Dems attempted to intimidate Michelle Jefferson, a local Conservative activist. It received media attention from Breitbart & local media. We greeted and spoke with local Frederick County business owners regarding the deteriorating business environment. Our MoneyBomb was an incredible success. We added hundreds of new donors and doubled the amount raised from our early MoneyBomb in the Senate campaign. Thank you to everyone who donated and to Donna D. & Phil F. for being o ...

Call To Action: Make your voice heard in the Frederick County Sheriff's accreditation process with CALEA. Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) 13575 Heathcote Boulevard Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia, 20155 Dear Assessment Team, In advance of your audit of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, I write to highlight my concern regarding that office's handling of Robert Ethan Saylor's homicide at the hands of three off-duty Frederick County deputies. On January 12, 2013, Mr. Saylor re-entered a movie theater without purchasing another ticket for a showing of Zero Dark Thirty. Sheriff's deputies Lt. Scott Jewell, Sgt. Rich Rochford and Deputy First Class James Harris were moonlighting as mall security that night and were called as such to attend to the situation. The three attempted to forcibly remove Mr.Saylor from the theater; confusion ensued as the guards dragged Mr. Saylor out of his seat. Soon thereafter, Saylor's companion returned to the theater and pleaded with ...
Flash Flood in USA on Tuesday Description Drenching rains Monday closed roads and schools in Culpeper County and forced the evacuation of about 50 people from a Culpeper motel, where the water reached chest-high in some rooms, officials said. Calls flooded E-911 starting about 1 a.m., said Tom Williams, director of Culpeper County Emergency Services. By 1:20 a.m., county rescue crews were wading through floodwaters around the Sleepy Hollow Motel. About 5.5 inches of rain fell starting Sunday. No one was hurt, Williams said. Two to three inches fell Monday in the Charlottesville area, flooding some streets in Albemarle and Greene counties. More than 2.5 inches fell near the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport and in localized spots from Greene County to Esmont, officials said. Heavy rains overnight caused flash floods in some areas and resulted in flash-flood warnings until about 6 a.m. Tornado and flood watches remained in effect most of the day. A tornado was reported by radar signal near Hampden-Sydney Co ...

This morning, I came upon this information about my 4th great grandfather, William Wilson. William was born, 17 Apr 1755, in Frederick County, Maryland. He died ,6 Dec 1821, in Richland, Fairfield Co., Ohio. Taken from "Pioneer Period & Pionner People of Fairfield County, Ohio" by C. M. L. Wiseman 1901 In the spring of 1800, William Wilson, of Bedford county, Pennsylvania, in company with his three sons, James, William and Michael, started for the Ohio country - with a pack horse to carry their their camp equipage. They arrived at Rushcreek on the 16th day of May, and camped near the great spring now owned by Mrs. William Friend. They spent the summer here, and made some progress in clearing land, but were too late to raise a crop of corn. In the fall William Wilson left his boys in camp and returned to Pennsylvania for the remainder of his family. He sold his property and started for Ohio, arriving at his camp on Rushcreek on the 27th of November. At Zanesvlle they crossed the river on a ferry boat wit . ...

On January 14, 2013, a young man with Down Syndrome went with his companion to see Zero Dark Thirty at the Regal Cinema in Frederick, MD. At the end of the movie, apparently because he wanted to see it again, he refused to get out of his seat. A Regal employee, rather than allowing him to stay and dealing with the situation... later with his parents and the companion, called not one, not two, but three off duty Frederick County police officers who were working security for the theater at the time. According to published reports, when the officers/ security guards asked him to leave, he mouthed off at them and “resisted arrest”. Those of you who know my son Landon can visualize what this would look like. In response, the officers wrestled him to the ground where he asphyxiated in handcuffs. The handcuffs were removed and EMS called and according to the police news release he later died at hospital. I don’t know how that reconciles with the coroner’s finding of asphyxiation which I thought was prett ...

While I was transcribing, I was struck by one long entry concerning the Will of John McAllister whose slaves were brought from Tennessee to Gallatin County, Illinois. In his will, McAllister emancipates all 62 of his former slaves: THE WILL OF JOHN McALLISTER. (Because of its interest, the entire will has been included. It shows the concern of the master for his slaves and their ability to care for themselves. Due to Tennessee law, the slaves were unable to remain in Tennessee, and 62 persons were brought at one time to Gallatin County, Illinois. The 1830 Federal Census of Gallatin County, Illinois, lists a free *** Ponso McCALLISTER with 21 in the family. Others listed are p. 267, line 6, Rebecca McCALISTER, 7 blacks; p. 269, line 16, Betsy McCALISTER, 5 blacks; p. 270, line 23, William McCALISTER, 8 blacks. So we see that 41 of the 62 were still in the county in 1830.) Know all men by these present that I, John McALLISTER, late of Greenwood Mills in Frederick County and State of Virginia, but now in ...

We are hearing reports of "loud booms" being heard/felt in the Frederick County area. Have you heard or seen anything?
My great grandfather (moms’ side) tilled the land and harvested the wheat of Frederick County. He provided countless blessings from that land right beside Fort Detrick. The base not as we know it today and much smaller. He supplied wheat for the U.S. Armed Forces in WWII, and continued to grow wheat after the war. One day the federal government told my great grandfather that he was growing too much wheat and had to chop it down and get rid of it. He replied by saying he would only use the extra wheat to feed is livestock and animals. This was still not good enough for the government. So they came in and took all the wheat. Both of my granddads served as well as my father. We do not serve or fight for a government to take away our property that we created with our own sweat and blood. We serve to fight for the brother beside us and the right to property, life, and liberty. Can we honestly say we live in a time where the federal government has become more and more tyrannical? I SAY YES! Since 2001 over 5 ...

Jost Hite (1685 - 1761) is your 9th great grandfather Jost Hite and Winchester (Frederick County) Hite's footprint is 'significant' By Rebecca Layne WINCHESTER — One of the first settlers of Frederick County was German immigrant Jost Hite, who brought 16 families with him from Pennsylvania in the spring of 1732. “Jost Hite was a big deal,” said Warren Hofstra, Shenandoah University’s Stewart Bell Professor of History. “He’s significant to the early settlement of the region and the recruitment of the large number of settlers from Pennsylvania.” The historical marker commemorating Hite’s significant footprint in the area is titled “Jost Hite and Winchester” and stands at Berryville Pike (Va. 7) and Greenwood Road. The settlers — Presbyterians, Protestants, and Mennonites of German and Scots-Irish descent — made their homes on the banks of Crooked Run and Opequon, Hogue, and Cedar creeks. Hite and his fellow settlers were farmers of grain, wheat, rye, corn, and livestock. They didn’ ...

UDFC also donates a major portion of its accrued funds at year end to the Liz Whitelaw Memorial Fund. As in previous year ...
The president earns a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account and $19,000 for entertainment. The most recent raise in salary was approved by Congress and President Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001. In February of 1776 Solomon entered the service of the State of Virginia in the Revolutionary War, ten miles west of Ingles Ferry on the New River, in what is now Montgomery County, Virginia. Ingles Ferry (Radford) was an important station on the Great Road down the Shenandoah Valley, which was bringing numerous immigrants from Pennsylvania and Virginia into Tennessee, and on to Kentucky. As a 21 year old he was probably pioneering on his own, his family having remained in Frederick County. Virginia. He entered the 8th Virginia Regiment under Captain James Knox for a period of two years. They marched to Williamsburg, Virginia, to join Captain Henry Lee (known as "Light Horse Harry", and father of the Civil War General Robert E. Lee). Lee marched the troops through Halifax, North Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina, to Savannah, Georgia. There being a necessity for troops in the north* they were taken to Philadelphia, then marched to Middlebrook, New Jersey, to join the main army. Solomon was there se ...
on the weather events of 2012, we look back to the Severe Thunderstorm that impacted this area on July 4th. This started off as a simple little storm coming out of western Maryland producing very frequent lightning and some hail in Frostburg and Westernport. After this, it started making a track towards eastern West Virginia and then Frederick County. The storm continued to be severe thunderstorm warned and by the time it hit Frederick County, all the firework shows were about to get underway or some were underway. This made for some great pictures and video clips. After 50mph gusts and very frequent lightning, the storm left as quickly as it came. Tomorrow, we look at a severe weather event that did not impact just the county, but the area as a whole. Any guesses?

8:55 AM 12/26 (Forecaster Greg)- There have been some changes to the advisories posted. The NWS has issued a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY until 1pm for the following: Baltimore, Harford, Howard, Anne Arundel, Montgomery Counties, and Baltimore City. Hazardous travel conditions will continue through the morning hours as sleet is now expected to fall for a longer period of time. This solution was outline in our SURPRISE FACTOR in our overview last night. The WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for Carroll and Frederick County continues until 6am tomorrow morning. We are now expecting heavier ice accumulations (up to .2") by late this afternoon in areas N&W of the city. Eventually the snow will change to freezing rain, which will cause this ice accumulation. By evening we may see it changeover to plain rain, but we have a long way to go before that happens. Please use extreme caution and avoid driving if possible.
9:45 AM 12/25 (Forecaster Greg)- Okay, who wished for more winter AFTER we gave you all some snow on Christmas Eve? Well your Christmas wish is about to come true... but you have to wait until Wednesday morning. Recent model trends have created a colder solution for our storm arriving early tomorrow morning. Most areas in Central MD should see a period of snow/sleet before changing to rain by mid-morning. This will make for a slick commute for most of the area tomorrow morning, but those in the counties N&W of Baltimore could have a bigger problem on their hands. Due to the snow on the ground, our temperatures will likely stay steady in the 30s today for those in Carroll and Frederick counties. Lows overnight will get into the mid 20s, which will provide enough cold air to lay down at least another coating of snow by sunrise Wednesday morning. The concerning part is after sunrise though, where many areas N&W of the city could start to see a period of freezing rain. Frederick County is already under a ...

County Public Schools Lead State: First Release of “School Progress Index” Data Shows FCPS on Top Frederick County Public Schools ranks first in the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) recently released 2012 accountability data. These results are the first that Maryland has issued under its new school accountability model, which replaces provisions of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act. The new system includes overall student performance, closing achievement gaps, student growth and college and career preparation. In the new model, Maryland is measuring school and school district performance using a tool called the School Progress Index (SPI). Although the specific details and calculations involved in the state’s SPI model are complex, the first results issued by the state are clear: Frederick County public schools are outperforming their counterparts statewide. Schools and districts with a ratio of 1.0 or higher met the new performance targets, with Frederick earning the highest score of 1 ...

The arts benefit restaurants, shops and more, he said. "It is a beautiful thing.
