The performers category of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's inductees is meant for recording artists and bands that have "influence and significance to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll." Artists become eligible for induction in that category 25 years after the release of their first record. In order to be inducted, an artist must be nominated by a committee that selects anywhere from nine to a dozen candidates. Ballots are sent to 500 "rock experts" who then evaluate the candidates and vote on who should be inducted. The performers that receive the highest number of votes and more than 50 percent of the vote are inducted. In 2011, the number inducted was five. The rest of the categories are voted on by special committees. In 2012, six additional bands and groups were inducted as performers by a special committee, due to the controversial nature of their being excluded when their lead singer was inducted. "There was a lot of discussion about this," said Terry Stewart, a member of the nominat ...

Recording years before this song hit, they based the group The Parliaments on Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers .. but added a whole lot of funk to the soul. George Clinton and the Parliaments broke through not only locally, but nationally with this huge hit. "(I Wanna) Testify" would become their biggest hit, before becoming Parliament/Funkadelic. Testify hit at CKLW .. on KEENER .. and nationally.

BEHIND THE SONG: I Want You Back This was the first Jackson 5 single released by Motown Records. It launched their career and went to in the US, as did their next 3 releases: "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There." Michael Jackson sang lead. He was 11 years old and the youngest of the group. There was one younger Jackson brother named Randy, who replaced Jermaine in the group in 1977. This was written by a team of Motown writers called The Corporation. The head of the label, Berry Gordy, was one of the writers. They were based in California, unlike most Motown writers who were in the Detroit offices. Michael Jackson reminded Berry Gordy of Frankie Lymon, another teenage star. Gordy helped write this as if he was writing for Lymon. The original title was "I Want To Be Free." It was Gordy's idea to change it to "I Want You Back" and make it more of a love song. This was intended for Gladys Knight & The Pips, and at one point Diana Ross was going to record it, but Berry Gordy decided to change the t ...

On this day in 1968, Singer/Songwriter and teenage heartthrob Frankie Lymon former and original lead singer of the group The Teenagers was called to Heaven while preparing for a musical comeback at the age of 25. They Couldn’t Win… By Charles H. Perkins If you play long enough, the HOUSE always win. If you use long enough, the DRUG always wins. I think about old saying like these whenever I hear about another entertainer going down because of drug use. Gil Scott Heron’s life story is a perfect example of this. And he is just one of many, many, MANY!!! Watching his story on “Unsung” was just all too familiar. In the 1950’s, it seemed that most of the entertainment deaths came from accidents while traveling from one gig to the next. The road was treacherous. Jessie Belvin, Buddy Holly, Earl Grant, the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, Chuck Willis, Eddie Cochrane and many others were killed in car or plane crashes. Even on into the ‘60’s Otis Redding and the Bar Kays died in a plane crash. Then came the 70’s. The story has repeated itself over and over again. Lives and careers ruined by drugs…Deaths by overdose…Drugs eventually leading to loss of career and to death: Frankie Lymon, Jimmie ...

Returning to live at Orange Street while still a young boy, Campbell attended the Central Branch School and St. Anne's School. While at school Campbell performed three or four times a week at the Glass Bucket Club as part of Frankie Lymon's Sing and Dance Troupe; rock 'n' roll themed shows were popular during the 1950s, with the Philip Glass Bucket Club establishing a reputation as the premier music venue and social club for Jamaican teenagers at that time.
Being apart of this club entails that once a month the members will gather and wear their best. Shirt and tie. Clean suit. Also allowing us to go back in time and live as kings and queens. A chance to bring back a much needed lifestyle in this day in age. Our grandparents lived a glorious simple time. Yes times were harder back then, however the gentlemen were Dapper and were loyal to those they call friends. The women were classy yet respectful of their selves. The music of those times actually had meaning. As we gather we will have the honor of lisenting to some of the old balads of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon, The penguins and various other artists of these amazing times. Don't let this Lifestyle of class and respect die. Lets bring it back. For those of you who accept thank you and you wont regret it.
