Daily Devotional Question: Submitted by Mike Rieley We do a commendable job at St. John's of feeding ourselves physically and spiritually through worship and Christian education, coffee hours and dinners. Our outreach includes the Food Pantry, Shepherd's Table and Meals on Wheels. How can we expand on our successes by serving the physical and spiritual needs of more - both inside and outside of our faith community?

To the people who was freaking ignorant enough to take the free bag of pads and tampons in the bath room at school for girls who actually need them you better not let me find out who you are for being so ignorant! Other girls may have needed those! Did you ever think about that? Well after you did your funny little prank I got wrote up for being late to class for picking up as many of them I could! So I swear if I find out who you are it's going to be bad. You need to get a life and rethink everything. Got a problem with helping other people? I've never been so mad. I'm not perfect I do look over things I should be more appreciative of but I don't understand how someone could be so stupid!! It's common sense you don't act like that. That would be like going to te food pantry and throwing the food around when alot of people need it.

Okay folks tell me what you think about this. This poking thing we do on here. I have an idea as most of you know I pastor the ARK Church of God in Manchester NH. We have a very active Food Pantry in fact last year with being closed for almost 6 weeks due to a broken sewerage pipe and the necessary repairs and of course good old New England weather. We were still able to provide almost 6000 meals to people last year. This does not include the Thanksgiving baskets we give out nor the free dinner on Thanksgiving day for the community. All of this is done with donations. No deep pocket supporters here just all of you who have been so gracious with your donations of food or money. So here's my though what I for every poke made at me there was a required $1.00 donation payable through our paypal account. This would achieve two things y'all get to poke me as many times as you want and for that $1.00 you will help provide two meals for someone. So feedback people what do you think?
CSA 2014 1. CSA is the acronym for Consumer Supported Agriculture. This system allows the farmer and consumer to share the benefits and risks of agricultural production. 2. Pick up Day is Thursday, each week, 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Alexander’s Enterprises, 2800 Cemetery Road, Gladwin Michigan. Any produce not picked up at that time will be donated to a local food pantry. 3. Seasonally available produce will make up the bulk of the items in your weekly basket. In addition, our homemade products including Maple Syrup, honey, fruit jams, and fresh baked healthy recipe breads will be included throughout the CSA season. 4. At least 95% of what you receive in your basket will be grown by us on our farm. Certain items that we do not grow will be acquired from local farmers we know and trust. Only produce that meets our high quality standards and growing specifications will be included. 5. Given the inconsistencies of Michigan weather, an exact start date for our CSA will be announced later in the spring. ...

Grimes Student Council donated $120.00 to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry from the "Hats for Hunger" project. In February, students had a day when they were able to wear a hat if they paid $0.25. Teachers and staff participated also and paid $1.00. Principal Rector paid $5.00. At the end of the day, with some additional donations, the Student Council raised $120.00. The Grimes Student Council contacted Jim Wade, president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and set up a time to make the presentation. Visiting with Jim and Nancy Wade, the St. Vincent de Paul Food Panty supports about 125 families a week. There are approximately 79 member volunteers. Not one of the workers receive a dime in payment for their time. The pantry is open from 1-3pm Monday - Friday. The pantry gladly accepts food donations. They also need hygiene product donations or cash donations to purchase items such as soap, shampoo, tooth paste, etc. Students also learned of the charitable donations of our local food stores, something th ...

Now HOW COOL IS THAT! In the process of helping people,Our pantry is running low,so if you can help us replenish the pantry it would be greatly appreciated. So, when I am not at work, home, with family or at church I like to volunteer at Amazing Grace (of Dalton's Food Pantry). They just started a Men's Bible Study on Thursdays a few weeks ago. Though we started out in Ephesians, the open discussion took us in many interesting directions. Ephesians is thought to be about the disciple-making church because of the instructions the Apostle Paul gives about use of gifts and pastors-teachers equipping the congregation for the Lord's work. The sad reality is that too many people want the pastors to do all the work - because "that's what we pay them for..." One interesting tangent we took off on concerned worship -what is it? Obviously the musical instruments cannot worship God, but they can be tools used in worship. Many churches call the music part of the service - the worship and even have worship pastors. Some churches don't use music instruments and just have congregational singing. My personal opinion is that music is only a part of worship - the whole service ...

Fun Friday - Sometimes humor is the best medicine. We would like to thank one of our "Bleeder Moms" - Carri - for posting this on her page this week. It brought a smile to our face when we really needed it. Our contribution to this list is the picture below. When you have one or more of these in your food pantry it is definitely a sign, or your attempt at making factor spaghetti failed - LOL. Signs You May Be Part of the Bleeding Disorders Family: 1) You are able to detect swelling and a faint blue hue in the legs of a chubby tanned toddler- from a distance. 2) Your internal dialog when you meet someone new, and shake their hand is "Hmmnn- nice veins..." 3) Your child also notices nice veins. but of course, can't keep that dialog 'internal.' 4) You are better stocked with first aid supplies at a school/church/family event than the paramedics everyone else wants to call. (and those that know you, would rather bring you over to treat their normal child first- than call!) 5) You are the person to whom you .. ...

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE ST. JOSEPH MEDAL OF APPRECIATION RECIPIENTS! Sacristans, religious education teachers, food pantry helpers, and gardeners are just a few of the duties that parishioners volunteer for at their parishes, and their motivation is pure and simple – they love their Church. On Sunday, March 16th, Archbishop Leonard P. Blair will recognize the commitment of 207 distinguished volunteers with the St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 140 Farmington Ave., Hartford at 3 p.m. The recipients – one person or a married couple from each parish in the Archdiocese – were chosen by their pastor. Among the recipients is Joan Pesce Veneziano of Waterbury. As a sacristan at Our Lady of Loreto in Waterbury, she prepares everything for the Masses, including the Chalice, the wine and water and lighting of the candles. She washes and irons the albs worn by the priests as well as the altar cloths and linens. She also brings Holy Communion to three local nursing homes and th ...

Good afternoon. the events board has reviewed all the fabulous ideas you all have posted. We would like to know if a family scavenger hunt would interest anyone for our first official community event. There will be no cost to the families that participate (with the exception of one non parishable item per family to be donated to the Port Byron food pantry). We are looking to incorporate historical facts and fun excersises (hoola hooping, jumping jacks, etc.) at various points in the village. Please either like or leave some feedback as to what every one thinks. We also tentavely looked at May 31st. It's a Saturday and we wondered if there were any other activities that day so we can start looking at other days? If this event is of interest, more details will follow. For the high school students that need community service, this is the event for them! I just spoke with Mr. Barber in the guidance office and he said this would count towards your community service. Ok Port Byron, tell us what you think!! Than ...

Amazing week. As we watch God in His grace pour out blessings. Eph 3:20 "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" Two weeks ago we had NO mattresses left. Now we have a 45" trailer FULL - floor to ceiling, front to back, side to side. A generous donor has loaned us another trailer and that is nearly full of furniture as well. So -at last count- we have three trailers here, a 1200 sq. foot modular and a container in Roanoke collecting mattresses. Stuff is going out like crazy. We are in process of doing a 2000 piece mailer to all our TMH clients. The letter is designed to invite people to church and to share with them information about the Food Pantry and Clothing Ministry. Big emphasis on outreach and impact and - wow - is it working.!! More beds and furniture will be coming in soon and we will be adding another storage facility. Overwhelming isn't it? But exciting and rewarding as well. Please "Share" this entire page an ...
If you just read my note about the Knights of Columbus Spaghetti Dinner on this Sunday, I would like to emphasize just what the Knights do in this community. With most of the money they raise, they give back to those in need. In the past several years, they have contributed to Franklin's Promise by monetary support, and most recently, with the purchase of several freezers for the Food Pantry. Last year they purchased a van for the Senior Citizens here in Apalachicola. Other good deeds are too numerous to mention. Please just keep the dinner in mind, and support the K of C and in turn, our community.

Merriwether Elementary Celebrates 100th Day of School By Giving to the Community Merriwether Elementary School students celebrated the 100th day of school in a special giving to others. Students in grades K-5 collected canned food and toiletry items on Wednesday, February 5th, challenging each grade level to meet the need with 100 items. Alas, each grade level collected more than 100 items each, for a grand total of 803! A HUGE thanks goes out to our Merriwether family! The items were split between two organizations that serve the Merriwether community, the Edgefield Food Bank and Sweetwater Baptist Church's Food Pantry. James Coleman, recently honored by WJBF's "Giving Your Best," and his son, Keith Coleman, came late Wednesday to pick up items for the food bank. They were very thankful for the donation.
Thanks to the Student Council for working at GOD's Food Pantry this morning!
Today some visitors to the Food Pantry asked me about the signs saying "28 Goats and Counting." I explained, and they started digging around in their pockets. One man gave me a five dollar bill; several others gave me ones, and three gathered up all their change--$1.50. They want to help others, too! Peggy, I will give you the money Sunday. What a blessing!

Most people do not associate hunger as being a problem in this area, but many people working in local service industries, single parents, the disabled, and the elderly are surviving on incomes far below the national poverty guidelines. The mission of the Food Pantry of Highlands is to provide nutritious food to anyone who meets the income eligibility guidelines for USDA food. In the winter months, restaurants and country clubs close, and other businesses slow down resulting in a loss of income. This combined with increased heating costs drains funds from the family budget that would normally be spent on food. The food provided allows families and individuals the necessary means to stretch their income. The Food Pantry allows clients to select their own food. We provide basic food staples, as well as, fresh produce and some personal items. The amount allowed is based on the number of individuals in the family unit. Currently, the Food Pantry provides food for 272 families representing 824 individuals. The ...

Wow did the time ever fly!  I can hardly believe that it’s July already!   Meeting 5: May 20th at McComb Cafeteria @ 6:30pm We reviewed several upcoming (and now passed) opportunities for the county.  The most important being the county 4-H camp that had just happened last week (June 25-29).  A thank you goes out to Justin Bower who is a county Jr. Leader and one of the camp counselors.  He did a presentation about 4-H camp and showed us all how to “walk like an Egyptian” by teaching us the line dance for “King Tut.”  We made plans for our community service activity, a field trip, and next meeting.     Community Service: June 18th at the McComb Food Pantry @ 6:30pm I am so proud of our members!  Together we filled at least 25 boxes of meals for families in need that were to be given out later in June.  After we filled the boxes we helped the pantry by stocking our shelves and sorting through clothes.  Diane Parker wishes to extend her gratitude for our help and said that she will l ...

A Community Garden…is a single piece of land gardened collectively by a group of people. Community gardens provide fresh produce and plants as well as satisfying labor, neighborhood improvement, sense of community and connection to the environment. This summer, Girl Scout Troop and the Sacred Heart Church Community plan to team up to revitalize the vegetable garden here at the church. We hope this will provide strength, growth and peace for all involved, as well as fresh veggies for the food pantry! Thank you for your all your support as you watch our garden grow. There is a Community Garden Giving Tree located as you come into church today in the Narthex. It has ‘needed items’ on the tree; plants, tools, etc. If you would like to help the Girl Scouts (help our Food Pantry), please take a tag or two and return the item with the tag back to church or to the Parish Center. Thank you and happy planting!

I just received this request from Friend Inc. to help fill the Food Pantry shelves. "Our Food Pantry is at an all time high as far as families that attend, but our shelves are getting bare. We served 223 families in May, and we give each family an average of 4 cans of fruits and vegetables each. That's almost 900 cans a month! We have been getting in donations, but they quickly fly off the shelves. Please help us out by donating cans of fruits and vegetables - as well as other items that are also low or getting low, like cereals and tuna fish. All items are always appreciated however!"
Food Pantry - Opportunity to Serve: If you are available to pick up food in Augusta once a month, please let Pastor Scott know. It would most likely be every 2nd Wednesday, you'd need to be in Augusta around 8:30-9am and deliver the food to the church. We can find people to help you unload or even unload for you at the church, if needed. (It'd be nice if you had access to a truck with a hitch that could pull the church trailer. If you don't have one and are available to drive to Augusta, stilll let us know, we can always borrow one.)

Patti's farewell sermon as given at the Dexter United Methodist Church on Sunday “Saying Goodbye” Sermon by Rev. Patricia Walz June 2, 2013 Memories, Joys, and Concerns: The first time I drove into Dexter, I was greeted with a big sign “Dexter Bull-Head Feed” And I said, “Wheat the heck is that?” Cleaning up the basement, scrubbing down walls. Redoing the basement floor, and redoing the basement floor, and redoing the basement floor. Several years of making our basement a healthier place and trying to keep that underground spring from making it’s way in. Trick-or-treating at the church – Ingrid (and Carolyn) in her witch costume. Hopping in cars and going caroling. The time I didn’t hear the doorbell because I was upstairs changing, and the young female parishioner being concerned about my well-being came running upstairs to make sure I was all right - and scared the living daylights out of me. The day Dave Compeau announced, “I think it’s time we started that Food Pantry.” Worshi ...

It is with an incredibly great sense of sadness that I share with you the death this afternoon of my 49 year old daughter, Lisa Christine Deuschl. She died at home under the wonderful care of hospice personnel. Lisa fought bravely for more than two years against colon cancer, but in the end there was nothing that could be done. Tomorrow morning at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center, where she guided tourists and visitors for three years, she will be posthumously honored with the coveted Employee of Excellence Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the job she loved so very much. Tentative plans call for a Memorial Service Mass, Monday, March 11 at St. Martin's Roman Catholic Church, 1908 N. Capitol Street, Washington, D.C. The family will receive visitors at 10 am, followed by Mass and a reception in the church hall at noon. In lieu of flowers we ask you donate to: The St. Martin's Food Pantry; Capital Hospice at 950 N Glebe Road, Suite 500, Arlington, Va. 22203; or your local chapter of t ...
Today is day 21 of our 40 day Lenten Fast. We've reached the half way point!!! Easter is just about three weeks away. Yesterday, I experience a little blessing that I believe was the result of sticking to the fast. The Lord had impressed upon me, once again, the value of "singing in the Spirit" (singing in tongues). I practiced all morning and on my drive out to Islandia for a meeting with the director of the Crisis Pregnancy center out there. But that's a different story. When I eventually got to the church, I realized that I needed four thermometers for our refrigerators, as the Island Harvest inspector is coming for our Food Pantry today. So I went to the local hardware store, Nodman's. A sweet older lady happen to be in the same isle looking for a old percolator style coffee pot. I was able to assist her in finding just the right pot. As we both were at the register at the same time, I became aware that this dear lady didn't have enough money to buy the pot. Back in the isle she had confided ...

Serving Albany's South End "I need help". This is what our neighbors say in a hundred different ways when they come to St. John's/St. Ann's Outreach Center. We respond to the need in many ways. The major programs most people associate with the Center are the Food Pantry and Welcome Table (Soup Kitchen), Many do not realize that there are many other less known services that the Center provides to our neighbors in need. Referrals and Counseling Maria came in and asked the receptionist to read a letter she had received from Social Services. After reading the letter, the receptionist asked if she understood it. "I understand English, but cannot read or write because where I come from, women are not allowed to learn. I would like to learn but do not know where to go." She was directed to an English as a Second Language program. Diane, a single mom raising her disabled daughter, comes in frequently, just to talk. Diane lost her job a while back and is searching endlessly to find another one. She will ...

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, ~ Ephesians 4:11-16 Here is what is happening this week: The Salvation Army is closed on Monday due to President's Day. Loving more . . . As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” 2 Corinthians 6:1-2a This year, thinking of how God is using my hands for His creation has made me love more. It has opened my mind to the possibilities of making strangers friends. Greeting them with a smile or even a touch can make a difference. Prayer: Lord, help me be more loving to all family, friends and strangers. Open my mind to others so I can see them as they are, not as what I may think they are. Amen Connie Newman is married to Jack and has three cats. She is retired but volunteers at the St. Stephen’s Food Pantry and at Olbrich Gardens. Connie sings in the choir and counts the church as her family.
People do not go to a Food Pantry because they are trying to cheat the system or get something for nothing. People go to get food because they have to feed their familys. Support those who have a real need. Support those who have little or less then you. Pray you are never in their shoes.
