I had a dream come true last weekend..., I made my return performance in my old hometown, Fullerton, CA, for the first time in 25 years! It was a thrilling moment for me to hit the stage at Bourbon Street Bar & Grill and look out and see over 100 fans and friends dancing and enjoying the moment and the music. I was very moved to see so many faces of old school mates, former band members, and local music buddies from years ago. The event was written up in the Fullerton Observer Newspaper and the Orange County Register. Charles Hale hosts this event saluting Fullerton Musicians, and they were so kind to invite me to perform in this great club on the downtown square, just a block from where Leo Fender first created his guitars and amplifiers. I played a mix of guitar hits from the 60's like "Foggy Mountain Breakdown", "Day Tripper", "Birdland" and "Walk Don't Run." It was a high-energy crowd so, I kept the the music uptempo. Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass The legendary bluegrass banjo player Earl Scruggs performs “The Black Mountain Rag.” Mr. Scruggs started playing the banjo at the age of 4, and by the age of just 10 he had already developed his own unique three-fingered technique, later known as “Scruggs-Style Picking.” His name has become synonymous with the banjo; his pioneering style has influenced a countless number of musicians around the world and he has helped to define the sound of 20th-century country music. Earl Scruggs was born in Flint Hill, North Carolina, near the Town of Boiling Springs North Carolina and nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Cleveland County. He passed away two years ago last month at the age of 88. Scruggs won his first Grammy Award in 1969 (along with his longtime collaborator Lester Flatt) for “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” which they first recorded in 1949. Scruggs received a second Grammy Award for a 2001 performance of the song (with Steve Martin on sec ...
I'm rolling into the Fox News Corner of the World on the D Train - listening to some old school bluegrass - Foggy Mountain Breakdown with Earl Scruggs.
Earl Eugene Scruggs was born on January 6, 1924 in Flint Hill, North Carolina. Scruggs joined Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in late 1945, and quickly popularized his syncopated, three-finger picking style (now called Scruggs style) on the 5-string banjo that is a defining characteristic of bluegrass music. In 1948 Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt left Monroe's band and formed the Foggy Mountain Boys, also later known simply as Flatt and Scruggs. In 1969, they broke up, and he started a new band, the Earl Scruggs Revue, featuring several of his sons. On October 15, 1969, Scruggs played his Grammy-winning "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" on an open-air stage in Washington, D. C., at the Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam, becoming one of the very few bluegrass or country-western artists to give support to the anti-war movement.

Just got done watching Flatt and Scruggs do "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" for the 5th time. OMG! How the *** one guy --- Earl Scruggs ---can get so many notes in one measure is almost beyond belief. And I love his glissades into minor keys about every fifth note.Real musicianship by guys just standing in a group onstage. No lights, smoke, jumps, back ups etc etc etc. And check out the guy with the open tuned regular guitar held horizontally in front of him using a slide bar in his left hand and finger picking with his right. Love it!!

What a great ceremony at the International Bluegrass Music Association awards in Nashville tonight! This was my dad's favorite music, which is why it's so dear to me. Lots of great performances and awards. Most memorable to me was Junior Sisk and Rambler's Choice winning both Song and Album of the Year. Junior was so overwhelmed he could not speak. The great Doyle Lawson was inducted into the Hall of Fame (it's way past time) and the legendary Earl Scruggs was honored by at least 50 banjo pickers (yes, Earl would've preferred the term "picker" to player, being a North Carolina guy) joining in on Earl's signature tune, "Foggy Mountain Breakdown". It was spectacular.
