WOW, The sunburst Fender Stratocaster guitar that Bob Dylan plugged in when he famously went electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival sold at auction for a record $965,000. The performance marked Dylan's move from acoustic folk to electric rock 'n' roll. Seen as a defining moment that changed American music, the three-song electric set at the festival was met with boos and folk purists saw Dylan as a traitor and a sellout. The previous record for a guitar sold at auction was held by Eric Clapton's Fender, nicknamed "Blackie," which sold at Christie's for $959,500 in 2004. Interesting is that Dylan left the guitar on the private plane he flew out on, maybe indicating at the time he may have felt the bold move was a mistake…(it's tough being boo'd). The pilot has kept the guitar for over 50 years, tried to contact Dylan’s people who never responded. also found in the case with the guitar were hand and typewritten lyric fragments which included an early draft of "Absolutely Sweet Marie" from Dylan's .. ...

54 years ago, at around 1AM, February 3, 1959, Rock'n'Roll suffered it's first huge tragedy. In a tragic plane crash in an Iowa Corn Field, we lost Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, along with their pilot, Roger Peterson. Holly's influence stretches across the music spectrum even to this day. Any band with 2 guitars, a bass, and drums, and any guitarist who has ever played a Fender Stratocaster, owes homage to Buddy. He was the first to popularize the Strat. Artists like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Marty Stuart honor his influence on them. Not bad for a West Texan whose entire catalog of different songs numbers under 100 recordings, and whose career as a star lasted merely 18 months. Holly's legacy lives, as my song says, even though when he left us, he was little more than a boy at 22. Remembering Buddy Holly and those lost with him on a cold winter morning...
