Today the O'Farrell Government announced that they would sell off all public housing in Millers Point. This is a disgrace. Here is Labor's media release. Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services Linda Burney said today that the move was a blatant cash grab done with no consultation and Minister Pru Goward could not be trusted to reinvest any proceeds in public housing. This is because over the past year alone, the Liberal Government has • Overseen an explosion in the public housing waiting list to 57,000 applicants - 2000 more than last year; • Cut $42 million from the budget fo ...
MEDIA RELEASE O’FARRELL MUST COMMIT TO OPPOSE 20 PER CENT GAS PRICE INCREASE NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson has called on the O’Farrell Government to commit to oppose the proposed 20 per cent increase to retail gas prices in a submission to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal. Mr Robertson said further gas price rises on NSW families were unacceptable – noting that the average household is already paying $247 a year more for more gas than before the O’Farrell Government was elected. “Every July 1 – you can almost circle the date on your calendar – gas prices go up under the O’Farrell Liberal Government and families across NSW get belted,” Mr Robertson said. “The average household is paying $247 a year more for gas than before Barry O’Farrell was elected – to add another $200 a year on top of that is simply outrageous and unaffordable for families. “Barry O’Farrell’s number one campaign promise was to tackle the rising cost-of-living in NSW. “The O’Farrel ...
BEREJIKLIAN PREPARES TO UPEND BUS TIMETABLE AFTER MAKING MESS OF TRAIN TIMETABLE The O’Farrell Government’s plan to upend the bus timetable threatens to downgrade neighbourhood bus stops, cut services and make the system less accessible especially for the elderly, the NSW Opposition said today. The Government today released a glossy brochure on the future of Sydney’s bus network. While it contains no funded commitments, it proposes a new three-tier structure of rapid, suburban and local bus routes that threatens to cut existing services and upend the entire bus timetable. Earlier this year, the Government rewrote the train timetable with many disastrous results. Peak hour services were cut across Sydney with severe impacts at stations such as Rockdale, Kogarah, Beverley Hills and Granville and countless more across the Blue Mountains, Illawarra and Central Coast. Some people are now forced to catch three or four separate trains to work instead of one. “The O’Farrell Government made a mess of re ...
Webber Announces Youth Opportunities Grant of $92,500 to Wyong Council Member for Wyong Darren Webber has announced that the O’Farrell Government will provide $92,500 over two years to Wyong Council for their “Youth Stuff” project in the Wyong Shire. “This grant is one of 28 projects throughout NSW that have been funded from the $1.93 million second round of Youth Opportunities funding,” Mr Webber said. “The $92,500 grant to Wyong Council will enable young people to lead and participate in community development activities. It will also enable Wyong Shire Council to extend it’s youth leadership and mentoring programs. The funding will be linked to the Wyong Youth Action Team and will partnership with local youth organisations. “With a growing population of families and young people in the Wyong Shire this funding is an important addition in ensuring that we provide every opportunity for young people to fully participate in our community and to also assist them to develop leadership skills . ...
CLAIMING YOUR PRO R-LICENCE REFUND It appears that as a result of yesterday’s stealth strike on Game Council NSW there is no clear or simple means of contacting someone who might know how to go about claiming a pro-rata refund for your now useless R-Licence. As an assessor myself, I know of several people who only recently handed over their hard earned cash, with the expectation of being able to hunt on Crown land, and it seems to me that it would be wrong if the O’Farrell Government were allowed to simply pocket the money. While I’m certain that O’Farrell and Co will consider the money to be spoils of war (on hunters and Game Council) I think we should put it on Barry for a refund. The template below is intended to be a primer. I suggest that we each send a copy to our respective local members, asking what provisions have been made to refund our licence fees. I also suggest that we encourage every responsible hunter we know to do likewise. Dear . I currently hold a NSW Restricted Game Hunting Lic ...
Madam Speaker,   I rise to give the budget reply, on behalf of the opposition.   This is the Government’s third budget; and that is significant, Madam Speaker.   In the life of any Government, it marks a turning point.   In a first budget, Governments can claim they’re just assessing the lay of the land.   They might even adopt the old chestnut of expressing shock and dismay at what they’ve inherited.   Even in a second budget a Government can refer backwards, still able to claim they’re still sorting it out….   I say this because there has been a question of form here, given the phantom ‘black hole’ of Baird Budget 1 and the “Billion dollar bungle” of Baird Budget 2, identified by the Auditor General.   But by a third budget, there is no looking back.   It is now time for the O’Farrell Government to throw away the rear-view mirror. Yes, throw away the rear view mirror.   The Treasurer now owns the budget.  The government owns it.  The people know it.   So what is it that ...

Despite GST revenues increasing, taxes at an all-time high and debt ballooning to record levels – the O’Farrell Government still has nothing to show for it. Now, Treasurer Mike Baird is trying to claim he will need to make even more cuts to frontline services in his third budget tomorrow. This is despite the fact that last year, the Treasurer got his own numbers wrong by more than $1 billion – and the State’s finances were actually in surplus. “This is the highest taxing government in the history of NSW, but they have absolutely nothing to show for it,” Shadow Treasurer Michael Daley said. “Mike Baird is collecting more GST than ever before, more stamp duty than ever before, and collecting more fines from drivers than any treasurer in the State’s history – but he isn’t getting on with the job and building the infrastructure the State needs and was promised. “The O’Farrell Government has increased net debt by more than $7 billion and net debt is set to triple – yet there is no sta ...
Stop massive overdevelopment in the Kingsford Area The O’Farrell Liberal Government is trying to massively increase the density and population in the Kingsford area with the announcement of an Urban Activation Precinct. The Government policy is to “substantially increase housing supply” in Anzac Parade and Houston Road, Kingsford bringing in thousands and thousands of more people and according to your council this will involve apartment blocks of up to 16 storeys. 16 storey apartment buildings in Kingsford will overlook almost all of the backyards inthe Kingsford/Kensington area and choke an already congested road, public transport and hospital system. The O’Farrell Government wants to implement this plan though local councils. I will fights these plans in Parliament but need your help by contacting your local councillor to let them know what you think about these plans. I have included below contact details of your local Councillors that represent that part of my electorate. Randwick City Council ...
The Better Planning Network (BPN), an affiliation of over 390 community organisations across NSW working to achieve a fair planning system that has community wellbeing at its heart and protects our environment and heritage has also called on the Members of NSW Parliament to protect Thompson Square saying that: 'Every Member of the NSW Parliament should visit Thompson Square and experience the special nature of the place ... The community has been told that existing heritage will be protected under the NSW Government proposals for a new planning system for NSW. But Thompson Square is an existing heritage item which is currently under threat from proposed development. How can the community believe that the O'Farrell Government means what it says when it proposes to push ahead with this proposal against the wishes of the community and contrary to the existing heritage status of Thompson Square?'

Here's the Northern Beaches Greens response to the O'Farrell Government's White Paper on the new planning legislation. It was written by Pru Wawn and addressed to Planning Minister Brad Hazzard and local MP Rob Stokes. Read on... Dear Rob/Brad The Northern Beaches Greens wish to raise serious concerns and questions around changes proposed for the planning system. Firstly the planning review that the NSW Govt is conducting, the White Paper, is not being sufficiently made known to the community. People are unaware that it is occurring, what the proposals are or what they will actually mean for their future. For transparency and trust purposes, adequate time for community consultation and input must be provided. A well-publicised period of at least six months should be put in place and the community informed. Issues around climate change and adaptation cannot be ignored. The economy exists in response to our environment, not the other way around. Therefore the key focus of any new planning legislation has to ...

The Auditor General has revealed CityRail trains are getting later and dirtier under the O'Farrell Government and as a result – passenger complaints have increased by a whopping 10 per cent to 29,219 this year. During eight peak hour periods in the past year, less than 60 per cent of the train network operated on time with train reliability at its lowest level in four years. "Today's report confirms what train commuters already know – trains are getting later, dirtier and more crowded under Barry O'Farrell," said Shadow Minister for Transport, Penny Sharpe. "More than six per cent of trains on the CityRail network arrived more than five minutes late in 2011/12 – the worst on time running in four years. "Seven out of 16 train lines failed to meet the 92 percent on time running target – a disgraceful performance. "The worst performing train lines are the Western, Southern Highlands, Newcastle/Hunter, South, East Hills, South Coast and Northern via Strathfield lines. according to the Auditor General' ...
The real impact of the education cuts Posted: Monday, 3 December 2012 | By: Nick Lalich A good education is one of the most important things we as a society can provide for our children. Access to good schools and universities, TAFE and traineeships; a strong education academically or in a trade is one of the key building blocks to building a secure future. There is never a good reason to take money away from our schools. Our hardworking teachers in NSW are the real unsung heroes underpinning our society and deserve more support from the Government, not less. That's what makes Barry O'Farrell's unprecedented $1,7 billion cuts to education such a vile and despicable act. Instead of hailing our local teachers as heroes, instead of investing in classrooms and programs for the benefit of our children, this O'Farrell Government is siphoning money away. Let's look at just some of the real impacts that these $1.7 billion cuts will have: Special education classes will be cut – in a culturally diverse area like ...
O'Farrell can't explain how he will pay for transport plan Posted: Thursday, 13 December 2012 | By: John Robertson ,Penny Sharpe There is not one new dollar of funding allocated for infrastructure in the O'Farrell Government's transport plan announced today. Opposition Leader John Robertson said the Premier had refused to say how much this plan would cost commuters, motorists and the taxpayers of NSW. "Another day, another transport plan from the O'Farrell Government and yet we still don't know where the money's coming from," Mr Robertson said. "The biggest problem with this plan is that we don't know how it will be paid for. "Will families be hit with new tolls, charges and fares to pay for these unfunded plans? "Will taxes rise, or will the State be plunged into more debt? "The West Connex project will cost up to $13 billion, but only $1.8 billion has been committed. "How can the O'Farrell Government guarantee these projects will be built to schedule, when they can't even explain how they will be funded ...

Here is my media release about the $20mil roads rename program. NEW ROAD NAMES A COLOSSAL WASTE OF MONEY O'FARRELL SPENDS BIG ON SIGNS - AS HE CUTS BILLIONS FROM SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS The O'Farrell Government is wasting $20 million renaming roads across the State - in a move that won't save motorists a single minute in travel time or improve road conditions and safety. This colossal waste of money comes at the same time the O'Farrell Government is cutting $1.7 billion from the NSW education system and $3 billion from NSW hospitals. "This is a complete waste of money and an insight into the O'Farrell Government's real priorities," Acting Shadow Roads Minister, Penny Sharpe said today. "The Premier is trying to play the people of NSW for fools if he thinks he can spend $20 million to rename roads, but then cut $1.7 billion from the education system and $3 billion from our hospitals. "Motorists want the O'Farrell Government to fix their roads and build new roads, not throw $20 million down the drain renaming ...

The O’Farrell Government has announced the effective sale of Port Botany to the private sector by putting it on the block as a 99 year lease. Whilst privatisation of public facilities may not be in accordance with my political philosophy, the decision is one for the government of the day and not Botany Bay City Council. In announcing the government’s intention to sell Port Botany several weeks ago, the Treasurer indicated that the government would remove the 3.2 million cap on containers. According to newspaper reports of the Treasurer’s statement, the removal of the cap would mean that the government would receive more than one billion dollars extra. The cap on containers, or Twenty foot Equivalent Units (or TEU’s) is not an arbitrary figure. It was stated on the 13 October, 2005 as one of the Conditions of Consent when the then Minister for Planning, the Hon Frank Sartor, determined a development application for State significant and designated development under Section 80 of the Environmental P ...
O'FARRELL CUTS NEARLY 300 POLICE OFFICERS CANCELS SEPTEMBER INTAKE AT POLICE ACADEMY Barry O'Farrell has secretly slashed 298 police officers from Local Area Commands in Sydney, the Hunter and Illawarra – breaking his pre-election promise to boost frontline police numbers. The Government's own figures reveal it has permanently reduced the number of police officers that will be allocated to 12 Local Area Commands including Sydney, Parramatta, Campbelltown and Newcastle. The Premier has also cancelled the September intake of policing students at the Goulburn Police Academy – reducing the number of officers that will be ready for operational duties in future years. "This is cost cutting gone mad," Opposition Leader John Robertson said today. "The O'Farrell Government's decision to slash 298 frontline police officers will put community safety at risk. "In Parramatta alone, the Premier has cut 49 police officers from the local area – despite a recent spate of stabbings and drive by shootings. "How c ...

Lock The Gate Alliance Media Release: 3 July 2012 Lock the Gate President Drew Hutton has called on the NSW Government to rule out former federal Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson from filling the recently announced NSW Land and Water Commissioner role. Rumors have been circulating over the last few days that the O'Farrell Government has been considering the former Chairman of Eastern Star Gas who controlled exploration licences in the Gunnedah area and Pilliga Forest before selling to Santos in late 2011. "According to NSW Nationals leader Andrew Stoner the commissioner is supposed to oversee the regulation of invasive exploration activity on Strategic Regional Land," Mr Hutton said. However, as Chairman of Eastern Star Gas, Mr Anderson oversaw more than 20 environmental and safety incidents in the Pilliga Forest that has polluted creeks and killed trees." See the report by Santos here. Earlier this year Santos reported, following an internal investigation, 'an unacceptable culture ...
Alan Jones Comments 25/06/2012 Well, as they say, the proof of the pudding is always in the eating. But the O'Farrell Government has at least had a stab at doing something about uncontrolled exploration and mining on prime agricultural land. Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner announced a new coal seam gas mining policy at a conference in Bowral on Saturday. A new Land and Water Commissioner position will be created to oversee coal seam gas mining in NSW. He or she will ensure new standardised land access agreements – which haven't yet been finalised – are observed by miners. As I said, these standardised land access agreements haven't been worked out, but at least they will be nutted out by a working group which includes farmers and irrigators. No longer will it simply be a matter of miners working out what they will do with Government. Affected landowners will also have to be notified before miners apply for exploration licences. The 5 year royalty holiday for NSW coal seam gas miners will also end. "Gas p ...
The O'Farrell Government moved for the appointment of a joint select committee to inquire into and report on the New South Wales Workers Compensation Scheme, in particular the performance of the scheme in the key objectives of promoting better health and return to work outcomes for injured workers; the financial sustainability of the scheme and its impact on the State’s economy and competitiveness; and the functions and operations of the WorkCover Authority. However, given the proposed four-week time frame for the inquiry was insufficient to allow a proper and thorough examination of the issues facing the Scheme, the Government’s intentions in establishing the inquiry should be questioned as whitewashing. Labor attempted to amend the motion to extend the inquiry reporting date to 2 August 2012 and also to require that the committee hold at least five full days of public hearings in Sydney and regional areas but this was defeated.
Better Services for a Better State The O'Farrell Government is sitting on a some nasty legislation in the NSW Upper House. The Government also has it's Bill to sell off NSW Electricity generators. We need to keep up the fight the Better State fight!
O'FARRELL ESTABLISHES INQUIRY INTO NATIONAL PARKS RIVER RED GUMS AND NORTHERN NSW FORESTS AT RISK National parks in NSW are under threat, with the O'Farrell Government initiating a parliamentary inquiry into conservation areas – with river red gum forests and northern NSW forests as their top targets. Three government members and one Shooters and Fishers Party member have moved for the Upper House inquiry into national parks and public land management. "I challenge Premier O'Farrell to categorically rule out any roll backs to national park reservations in NSW today," Shadow Environment Minister, Luke Foley said. "The terms of reference for the O'Farrell Government's Upper House inquiry read like a hit list of national parks and conservation areas – with the river red gums and northern NSW icons at the very top. "I have consistently predicted the O'Farrell Government would try to roll back river red gum national park protections and it appears this inquiry is being used to justify exactly that. "In Opp ...
