From Bruce Andrews, SCAC Executive Director: BEALE STREET in Memphis on 2007, George Dudley ( my band mate) and I were waiting our turn to go on stage in the International Blues Challenge. We spotted the legendary music producer Johnny Sandlin ( Allman brothers, etc.) in the small venue. We asked around to find out why he was there. He was there to hear Danny Brooks, who we learned moments later was the "real deal". I have been a fan ever since. In this world of manufactured music and plastic people..real soul and substance is hard to find. I recommend you get yourself a ticket to this at the Shelby County Arts Council for 4-27. I guarantee an afternoon well spent. Danny is a man who has "been there and done that" and he's not afraid to tell what he's learned.

I am not an Executive Director who sits in their ivory tower as a paper pusher. I am hands on, knee deep and anal retentive enough that I handle all admin duties as well as collection of donations, flying to different states, providing speeches, classroom instructions and workshops; wrapping gifts at Christmas for our Christmas programs for indigent and low income families and such. You will more than likely find me in scrubs (I have a bunch left from my medical career) or sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers. I only "dress up" when I have to. I would never ask anyone to do a task that I would not do myself.

Chris Berg It is becoming increasingly obvious that Tony Abbott’s plan for governing is to work his way through the IPA’s wish list of 75 (+25) “radical ideas”. Since these people seem to be determining the direction our country will take I thought it worth investigating the qualifications of the authors of the paper, John Roskam, Chris Berg, and James Paterson. John Roskam is the institute’s executive director. Prior to his employment at the IPA, Roskam was the Executive Director of the Menzies Research Centre in Canberra. He has also held positions as an adviser to federal and state education ministers, and was the manager of government and corporate affairs for the Rio Tinto Group. The other two young men, Berg and Paterson, seem to have no relevant qualifications or experience other than appearing on the Drum and writing for publications like the Australian. Relevant experience is not a prerequisite to get a gig at the IPA. Focusing on the National Curriculum, we have Stephanie Forrest who j ...

A message from PRTC Executive Director Alfred Harf: There have been further developments since my last message about the funding challenge looming for PRTC, so this is an update. You may recall that in my February message, I wrote that a substantial majority of PRTC’s local funding comes from Prince William County. Since 2008, the County has relied solely on a 2.1% motor fuels tax to fund its local share of PRTC bus service and VRE train service, but the revenue generated by that tax is insufficient to fully fund these services at their current  levels. Because the County supplemented the motor fuels tax with general fund appropriations before 2008, not all of the annual motor fuels tax yields were used during those earlier years, allowing a reserve to be built up. Since the cessation of the general fund supplement, the fuels tax reserve has been tapped to cover the annual shortfall, but current estimates indicate that the reserve funds will be fully depleted by FY 2017. PRTC management has alerted ...

Responding to legislative passage and the anticipated signing by Governor Corbett of House Bill 431 and other bills reforming the state’s mandated reporting requirements, PFSA Executive Director Angela Liddle today issued a statewide statement that included the following: “We must all remember that the child welfare system does not begin to protect children until a report is made. This last series of child welfare bills headed to the Governor’s desk for signature continue to advance the recommendations made by the state’s Task Force on Child Protection. They cast the net wider in defining who is required to report child abuse, and require licensed and certified professionals who work with our children to be trained on key issues related to child abuse identification and reporting. "These key mandated reporters also have had some roadblocks to reporting child abuse removed. As Executive Director of the Livingston-Polk County Chamber of Commerce, local business owner and long-time resident, I know what it takes to do business in Polk County. As County Judge, I would aggressively promote Polk County at the State and Federal level to secure funding for infrastructure, education, and tourism. I would focus on partnership opportunities with other entities such DETCOG, the City and Port of Houston, and the surrounding Counties. The success we have had at the Chamber is largely due to the partnerships and working relationships that we developed over the last few years. As a mother, teacher and business woman, I understand the importance of education. The creation of the new Commerce/College Center in Livingston is one of the accomplishments I am most proud to be associated with. When children don’t get a good education, it directly impacts our community through low wages, poor training, and job performance. Truancy issues should be managed by the school district and precinct wher ...

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Kansas City Jewish community which sustained a horrific loss today. Even as the news emerges, we are in direct contact with local law enforcement and we are taking precautions to secure our facility to the best of our ability. At this time of year, when we are preparing to celebrate Passover and our freedom, we are reminded that we cannot take these moments for granted. With sympathy and in solidarity with our family in Kansas City, Arnnon Geshuri, President and Steve Bogad, Head of School, Yavneh Day School; Jeff Kanel, President and Jyl Jurman, CEO, Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley; Avery Kaufman, President and Nate Stein, CEO of Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center; Robin Sabes, President and Mindy Berkowitz, Executive Director of Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley.

‘Nasarawa State is poor, its lawmakers are rich’ Written by Nurudeen Oyewole, Sunday Trust Lanre Suraj is a rights activist and the Executive Director of Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC). Recently, his group petitioned EFCC to investigate allegation of corrupt practices against lawmakers in Nasarawa State House of Assembly. In this interview, he spoke to Sunday Trust what informed the group’s decision. Your group once took interest in Taraba State. But now, you are in Nasarawa State. Why is your group showing special interest in Nigerian states? I think one of the things that is very instructive is the situation whereby many Civil Rights Groups tend to focus almost all their attentions on the Federal Government. But you will discover that there are lots of corruptions, frauds and mis-management going on at the State and Local Government levels. Thus, after critical analysis of the situations, we at the Civil Society Network Against Corruption came to the conclusion that there are ma ...

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Margaret A. Chan ruled to strike down the first-ever healthcare and disability find that would have provided benefits to tens of thousands of taxi drivers for the first time on the job. “It’s a devastating decision basically telling tens of thousands of taxi drivers that they are expendable when sick. It’s heartless and shocking. Even if you’ve never been in the driver’s seat, you know that’s plain and simple wrong. How a Supreme Court Judge didn’t is unreal. We urge the city to appeal”, said Bhairavi Desai, Executive Director, New York Taxi Workers Alliance. See copy of Judge Chan's ruling:

Even the federal dollars we have been awarded in this phase of construction were a result of the bi-partisan support and efforts of Senator Saxby Chambliss, former Congressman Jim Marshall, and Congressman Sanford Bishop,” said Ambrose, “The construction work underway is being done overwhelmingly by local businesses and workers.”   The completed facility will help reshape and energize downtown Macon, an ...

MIPTV REPORTING - Day 3 This morning, the Mippers had a busy day, some of us were derushing (and GIRL POWER), the rest of us made some interviews of buyers. At 1 PM, we met Emmanuelle Miquet, journalist for "le film français", who's an expert of French formats. Just after this interview, we had the time to go to the MIP Digital Fronts. These are a lot of conferences focused on digital contents. And two of them were really great : "VICE" and "FARMED & DANGEROUS by Chipotle and Piro". The first one was about the new contents of VICE and why they want to do, to show. The second one presented a new comedy, and, thanks to this show, Chipotle won the MIPTV 2014 brand of the year :) . After that, we did the interview of our partner, Matthieu Bejot, Executive Director at TV France International, who explained his mission and which French formats works. It was followed by another interview with an other Journalist, Marie Agnès Bruneau, who works for C21, an English media. She is an expert of TV shows. To finish, ...

Indian Boy Who Invented Email Monday, 24 March 2014 | Kumar Chellappan | CHENNAI. Even the best brains in computer and software engineering may not be able to answer if you ask them who invented email. This was illustrated on Sunday when this writer checked the same with Prof Achuthsankar S Nair, Director, State Inter-University Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Government of Kerala and Dr. Iyemperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu State Science and Technology Centre. Both of them expressed their helplessness even though both of them handle hundreds of email messages per day. It is a 14-year-old boy from India and that too with roots in Tamil Nadu who invented email as well as the five-letter word which has become synonymous with communication. VA Shiva Ayyadurai, hardly out of school in New Jersey, ushered in the paperless era into this world. It was in response to a challenge thrown at him by Dr Leslie P Michelson, Director, High Performance Computing Lab, University of Medicine and Dentistry of ...

It was great to see so many of the executive team having studied at or partnered with research institutions in the United States – St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic, and Johns Hopkins Medicine, to name a few. It looks to be the beginning of what will become a world class medical precinct -- a place where Australian medical researchers can continue and expand their collaboration with U.S. researchers in our shared quest for better treatments and cures for some of the world’s most challenging diseases.

THE LAND-GRAB ISSUE IN AFRICA A Discussion with Advocates & Policymakers Monday, April 15 at 2:00PM U.S. CONGRESS: Rayburn House Office Building/ Room 2200 (45 Independence Avenue SW, Washington, DC) A SHORT DOCUMENTARY ON LAND GRABBING WILL BE SCREENED Land grabbing is becoming the single most combative issue in Africa. It involves large-scale land acquisitions by foreign countries and corporations for farming, biofuels, logging and minerals. Unlike land acquisitions in the United States and Europe where purchasers pay the fair market values for land, in Africa unscrupulous deals are displacing thousands of farmers and leaving local communities in abject poverty, while government officials benefit from land sales and leases. PLAD was created to focus on education, health, land-rights and agriculture as the cornerstone to address the human rights problem in Africa. Educated as ...
Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison, 4.2.2014. There are two more days left in this year’s legislative session and we are keeping an eye on Montgomery. It was good to hear that Rep. Greer feels his Secrecy bill, H.B. 379 is gutted by the amendment offered by Senator Cam Ward who has been watching developments in Oklahoma with a similar bill. Quite simply put, Alabama cannot afford to pass that bill and have to fight the appeals that would follow. Yesterday Alabama’s Moral Monday Movement held a press conference at the State House, after first having delivered a letter to the Governor’s office. Various speakers spoke to issues of concern, including our Executive Director who hoped that her Chair and Board would be able to see and hear her on television. The Movement Moral Monday is still in its infancy in Alabama, and so there are still kinks to be worked out in how different interests and leaders can come together and work together. For our organization this is an opportunity to in ...

FNAA has uncovered some information relating to the new right of way for AAF between Cocoa and Orlando. The letter mentioned in this article was written by Steven Precourt, who resigned as the Majority Leader of the Florida House of Representatives in January 2014, to become the Executive Director of the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA). The Executive Director position was short lived and in his letter he explains why. In addition, "The letter also claims that toll payers will have to hand over $58 million to All Aboard Florida as part of a deal to bring train service from Orlando to Miami. That train will run along right of way owned by the Expressway Authority next to the Beachline" according to this Fox 35 report. We all have seen the claim from All Aboard Florida that they will not use any government money for their project ("This is a 100% private operation," he said. "WE'RE NOT ASKING FOR ANY GOVERNMENT MONEY. We have hired architects. We’re going full speed ahead." - Eric D. ...

Good news for bobolinks, meadowlarks, and other grassland species. Many CNY landowners who want to help grassland birds, but could not afford to, can now get assistance. The new Incentives for Saving Grassland Birds will help compensate landowners willing to rearrange their cultivation schedules and practices for the benefit of the birds. Yesterday I received two (computer-generated) emails from Corey Day, who signs himself as Executive Director, Minnesota DFL (the Democratic Party in Minnesota). These are the most chilling fundraising letters I have ever received, and indicated that not only do they have a file on me as a "supporter," but they are unhappy that I have not given them anything. Against the backdrop of public debate about the excesses of data gathering by the NSA, I find the fact that they have a file on me inappropriate, and the fact that they are willing to use it in this fashion unacceptable.

The judge in the Erias Lukwago case affirmed the Attorney General Peter Nyombi and Tumwebaze as pedestrian fraudsters bent on promoting injustice. Justice Lydia Mugambe granted Mr. Erias Lukwago a permanent injunction over the Kampala Mayoral by-elections. The Judge insisted that the impeachment process was unlawful since a court order stopping the process was delivered on time. She ordered that Lukwago be compensated and that, should there be an attempt to block him from office, the minister in charge of Kampala, the Attorney General and the Executive director of Kampala will be liable for any damages. After leaving the court room at about 6:30 pm, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago assured the people of Kampala that, come Monday 31 March, 2014 he will be in office at City Hall by 8:00 am. What a wonderful night! On behalf of The GLBT Community Center, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in the fundraiser tonight! Michael Wanzie organized another wonderful variety show and dedicated the entire proceeds to The Center! By the way, a little known fact is that Mr Wanzie was the first Executive Director for The Center! We appreciate Michael, Don, Susan, D Squared, and all of the other friends that contributed time and effort! Please continue to follow what we are doing at The Center...we have some really exciting announcements coming in the next few weeks!
