Chapter 10 - Giving : “A good man showeth favor and leadeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.” Psalm 112:5 When a gift is given freely and with joy, the value of the gift is increased. It is the privilege of every Christian to be a giver. When the Holy Spirit of the living Christ flows through you, He teaches you to love and withhold nothing that will bless and enrich your neighbor. Your purpose in life is to be a blessing to others. Let your gift always be accompanied by a prayer of thanksgiving and a desire that God will bless the gift, and thank Him that you are able to give. The most important gift that you can offer is yourself. God has given you a personality and you must do your very best to develop it to His glory and to the service of others. That is something that every Christian can offer his fellow man - regardless of their financial position or social standing. God gives freely, without any obligations, and you and I should do the same.

As Christians, we find complete sufficiency in Christ and His provisions for our needs. There’s no such thing as an incomplete or deficient Christian. Our Savior’s divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness. Human wisdom offers nothing to augment that. Every Christian receives all he and she needs at the moment of salvation. Each one must grow and mature, but no necessary resource is missing. There’s no need to search for something more.

I am re-reading my favorite Civil War Novel “Shiloh” by Shelby Foote. In it Foote describes Grants demeanor before that great battle. U.S. Grant had spent the better part of a decade as a loser in the business world. He was called "Useless" Grant by friends of his father. He found alcohol as a way to cope with his loneliness and depression. When he had the chance to get back in the army as an officer he was quickly moved up in ranks. However, the long spans away from his family tempted him to drink again. When he was promoted to General he went and found a man named John Rawlins from his hometown to be his chief of staff. He was not a drinker and gave everyone that drank a hard time. Foote says, “By the end of the war it was said if you hit Rawlins in the head you would knock Grant's brains out, but that was not true. Rawlins was not his brains, he was his conscience.” It seems to me that every Christian needs to find the wisdom to get a Rawlins in their lives.

(Isaiah 45:15) There are times when he appears to be MIA, missing-in-action, in your life. This is a normal part of the testing and maturing of your friendship with God. The most common mistake Christians make in worship today is seeking an experience rather than seeking God. They look for a feeling, and if it happens, they conclude that they have worshiped. Wrong! This community we call His Church. The Church that Christ founded is the Catholic Church which has a formal earthly structure established by Christ and which continues under His authority and protection. In the Old Testament we see God's continual involvement in the lives of the Israelites through appointed prophets. God delivered, instructed and admonished the Israelites. He made His motions in a visible, specific and formal way. He always did so through human hands, mouths, feet, minds and wills. God established a law and a means for executing it. Jeff Mills I recently watched a documentary in which a psychologist listed the traits of psychotic killers. He said that they had a lack of empathy, which was reflected in the thought that they were number one in the universe. I couldn’t help thinking of how that summed up a bunch of foul-mouthed teenagers who bullied an elderly woman on a school bus earlier that week, and the teens who threw trash into the 9/11 memorial.
