Tonight is a magical movie experience that covers most categories of film (comedy, suspense, action, thriller) and spans several decades from the legendary Alfred Hitchcock's Classic North By Northwest featuring the incomparable Carey Grant and Eva Marie Saint. We also have the classical Tennessee Williams 1955 Pulitzer Prize winning Play remade into a 6 time Oscar nominated film 1958's classic Cat On A Hot Tin Roof featuring a powerful duo who need no introduction the timeless talents of Elizabeth Taylor and Mr. Cool Hand Luke himself Mr. Paul Newman. Also her drama of 1960 Butterfly 8. :) speaking of Paul Newman another man who will forever be instilled in our minds and also a movie that contains one of history's most memorable car chases through the streets of San Francisco non other than Mr. Steven McQueen in the 1968 classic Bullitt (and yes that is how its spelled. : ) last but not least to feed my comedy bone as well as a modern actress who isnt too bad to look at either I will engage in the modern ...

After a discussion on Carrie Rickey's page about underrated Eva Marie Saint performances, I rewatched "Nothing in Common" for the first time in years. Thoughts: a) This might be Garry Marshall's best directorial effort, although I realize that's damning with faint praise. b) Pre-"Big," it proved that Tom Hanks could play the goofball and handle the serious stuff -- in a way, it's his "It's a Wonderful Life" in terms of transitioning from one phase of his career to another. (And the resemblance ends there.) c) This was a pre-"Mad Men" piece of pop culture that made advertising seem super-cool. But it's only in watching it as an adult that I can see just how glib and shallow Hanks' character is from the get-go; in college, I was as charmed by him as the other characters. d) I miss Bess Armstrong.

HATFUL OF RAIN, the Michael V. Gazzo play made into a movie, on TCM tonight at 10:00. "A Hatful of Rain is a 1957 dramatic film. The movie was a rarity for its time, in its frank depiction of the effects of morphine addiction. It is a medically and sociologically accurate account of the effects of morphine on an addict and his family. It stars Eva Marie Saint, Don Murray, Anthony Franciosa, Lloyd Nolan, and Henry Silva. The movie was adapted by Michael V. Gazzo, Alfred Hayes, and Carl Foreman from the play by Gazzo. Foreman was blacklisted at the time of the film's release. The Writers Guild of America added his name to the film's credits in 1998, 14 years after his death. It was directed by Fred Zinnemann and features a strong musical score by Bernard Herrmann. Herrmann was asked by Fox to rescore his prelude for the film as the original was considered "too terrifying". Franciosa was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role."

2 DG's were mentioned at the Oscars last night: Esther Williams and Eva Marie Saint.
Sunday morning this week started with the Oscars Almanac. 70 years ago the Oscars included Jack Benny, Casablanca, Jennifer Jones and was less than an hour and not "R" rated. The Potty mouth segment... I Could not agree more...Oscar winners , please filter your words tonight, there is a time and place for your potty mouth comments , leave them home. The baubles and bangles of David Webb were and continue to be exquisite. Especially liked the Negative reviews segment... you must remember this. We remember the negative , I don't really think that "anything" is fair game, when we make fun of the way someone looks we have crossed the line. So I guess I could not have made a living out of being a critic and slept well at night. Anyone ever heard of peer pressure and bullying? Same thing different age. Hollywoods makeup man is unbelievable, arduous work that ends in perfection that may only be seen for seconds on the screen. Eva Marie Saint , yes a memorable actress and the sweater queen...do we have them anym ...

Greetings from the "Blueville" area. Spring still hasn,t arrived and won't until the Yankees opening day. Against my better I went to see "Winter's Tale". The movie was beyond bad despite a good performance by Colin Farrell and the presence of the beautiful Jessica Brown Findley and a cameo by the legendary Eva Marie Saint. And what was Will Smith doing in this and who was he supposed to be? Can't wait for the Academy Awards. They're doing a tribute to Judy Garland this year. And speaking of the great Judy,a character in a movie I saw recently remarked that she thought that any guy who listened to Joni Mitchell was *** and I'm sure this would Probably apply to fans of Judy, too. Well Ilove both these ladies and also musicals and movie soundtracks and I know I'm pretty damned straight. Speaking of music or was I? Iwas watching this week's epidode of "The Blacklist" and they played this great song which I found out was "Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second by STRFKR. Never heard of them but really like the s ...
Christopher Christie is unfortunately so important because of New Jersey's immediate proximity to New York. There isn’t going to be any divorce there- we’re stuck with them. It’s so close on Manhattan that when the pig farms in Secaucus feed their livestock particularly rancid garbage, New York gets to smell the pig farts. On the psychic level, there’s a similar effect. We get infested with their *** politics. Do you feel that New Jersey is unfairly maligned? Look at the state’s last few governors: Christine Todd Whitman, an airhead exurbanite from a rich family who went on to become George W. Bush’s EPA chief, who insisted that the still-smoldering ruins of the World Trade Center were safe to work in, after which thousands of first responders came down with cancer and mesothelioma; Jim McGreevey, Mr. I Am A *** American, who was later revealed to have been soliciting men in public toilets and engaging in threesomes with his wife and his chauffeur; Jon Corzine, who wound up in the hospit ...
"On the Waterfront" was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as the Best Picture of 1954. Directed by Elia Kazan, released by Columbia Pictures, and featuring Leonard Bernstein's only original motion picture score, this gritty black and white film was quite realistic and gripping for its time. The cast included Marlon Brando, Rod Steiger, Karl Malden, and Eva Marie Saint. Bernstein later made two stereo recordings of his concert suite from the film score, with the New York Philharmonic, first for Columbia Records and then Deutsche Grammophon; both recordings have been reissued on CDs.

She looks like Eva Marie Saint in On the Waterfront...
THE "SUMMING UP MGM" QUIZ " Improbable but absorbing William Inge script about narcissistic young man (Warren Beatty), his admiring younger brother (Brandon de Wilde), indulgent parents (Angela Lansbury, Karl Malden), and the older woman (Eva Marie Saint) with whom he becomes involved. Fine performances." Can you name this film?
My friends rave about the book. Gwyneth Paltrow said it was her favorite. But I just went to see the film of THE WINTER'S TALE and it was a snooze. I know its a sort of fairy tale and has time travel and a flying horse but there were so many other things that made no sense. The central character was an orphan with Eastern European parentage, raised by an American Indian in Brooklyn (I guess) but has a right off the boat Irish accent? Will Smith is the Devil himself? A little girl grows up to be Eva Marie Saint but she has to be 110 years old working at a newspaper? Its healthy to walk barefoot in the snow when you have consumption? I have no problem with fantasy, alternative history, science fiction but before my mind expands its got to have some foundational starting point...Hansel and Gretel (the update) made more sense.

Just saw "On the Waterfront" starring Marlon Brando, Rod Steiger, Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden and "introducing" Eva Marie Saint. Great to experience it in a theater. Showing again on February 26th. Regal has a series of six classic films planned. Hitchcock's "Rear Window" with Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly is next up on March 2nd and 5th.
Winter’s Tale Sometimes upon leaving a theater the viewers dab their eyes at tears caused by some heartwarming story. Sometimes the viewers high five each other at the high body count of bad guys. But when the audience leaves the theater asking each other “just how old is Eva Marie Saint anyway?” we know the movie has a problem. “Winter’s Tale” the book authored by Mark Helprin in 1983 found a wide and enthusiastic readership. In 2006 in a poll of literary professionals “Winter’s Tale” was among those mentioned as the “best work of American fiction of the last 25 years.” People liked the book and the literati also liked it, a lot in fact. However the ambiguities in the original text and the technique of magic realism just did not make a satisfactory transition to the big screen. It is in fact a confusing mess with glimmers of brilliance. Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) is an orphan in turn of the century New York, the abandoned child of would be immigrants. He is a professional t ...
Off to Denver for the day, maybe to see "Winter's Tale" at the theatre. It has a very tempting cast: William Hurt, Will Smith, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Eva Marie Saint! Wow!
I am aware of the fact that this review may be a bit biased due to my new found infatuation/love with Jessica Brown-Findlay but I will not allow that to affect giving my honest opinion of the film. I did just pause though as I realized I now have to attempt and explain the plot of this movie; so here we go. Winter’s Tale stars Colin Farrell as Peter Lake, a master thief on the run from Russell Crowe’s Pearly Soames in 1916 New York. Peter meets and instantly falls in love with Beverley( a character I successfully fell in love with but that's another note for another time), played by Jessica Brown-Findlay, who is dying of consumption. I don’t want to give away too much more before you see the movie but there are also angels, demons, miracles, flying guardian horses that are called dogs, time travel and a fantastic cameo by the actor portraying Lucifer. It goes without saying that this movie just does not care. It goes for and owns its fantasy aspect which actually real ...
Inger Stevens. She was probably most known for the television show The Farmers Daughter. She was a delicate, demure beauty much in the same way as a Jean Simmons, Eva Marie Saint, or Catherine Deneuve. Rumored to have had affairs with Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Harry Belafonte, and Anthony Quinn. I recalled feeling sad, disturbed and confused when she was found dead of an apparent drug overdose. A teenage kid, probably just into puberty , wondered why someone so beautiful would take their life so. I am still wondering.
i kept waiting to see Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. pretty good
See Winters Tale. If you believe in miracles and love and angels...a beautiful spiritual romantic film. Everyone is wonderful in it. I so enjoyed seeing William Hurt and Eva Marie Saint! Colin Ferrell is great. So glad I saw this and especially today. And there's Graham Greene and the always great Russell Crowe.
WINTER'S TALE: Right when you thought it couldn't possibly suck to be Colin Farrell, this movie stars Academy Award winner Russell Crowe, Academy Award Jennifer Connelly, Academy Award winner William Hurt, Academy Award winner Eva Marie Saint.and Colin Farrell.
North by North West. Great film staring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint or book by Kanye West's daughter?
She was pretty when she was younger, too, but I think that Eva Marie Saint has gotten more beautiful as she got older.
EVA MARIE SAINT, in WINTER's TALE... She reached fame with ON THE WATERFRONT ( with BRANDO ) and in Hitchcock's North By Northwest (with Cary Grant ). Remarkably, she'll turn 90 this July! And she's still goin' strong!!
First and Last time I was at a Drive In was in 1969, with my parents. The film we saw was "Grand Prix", a wonderful film about the world of Formula One sports car racing...It starred Yves Montand, Eva Marie Saint,James Garner,Antonio Sabata Sr.Jessica Walter, Brian Bedford.now what made it special was where the drive in was. It was right off of a highway...so you had the sound from the screen along with the sound from the highway coming at you... It is one of my very favourite films ever made.
Horse was my favorite actor in the whole film, besides Eva Marie Saint, who may not have been aware that she was even in it.
You have to be kin to Eva Marie Saint ! Saw her in North By Northwest with Gary Grant last nite & you MUST be kin !
Certain scenes from movies seem to stay with you, sometimes inexplicably. "I'm walkin' here", the Jimmy Cagney grapefruit scene, "What we have here is failure to communicate" are obvious choices. And Steve Mc Queen's superb shut-up-ness throughout Bullitt remains an inspiration. But what possible inspiration could a lifelong wearer of jeans for all occasions who's never owned a suit (bespoke or otherwise) garner from Cary Grant's North By Northwest scene of sartorial scrupulousness, where he suavely requests of a hotel valet (terminal t not silent) the sponging and pressing of his grey one. Maybe it's that presence of mind Cary exhibits as he finds himself in a sexually crackling encounter with the cooly smoldering Eva Marie Saint (battling his own growing failure to communicate), after of course being abandoned by a Greyhound doubledecker in the middle of nowhere and then set upon by a murderous crop duster, things to clear the sinuses and hopefully concentrate the mind. I often think of this scene as .. ...
Went to bed two-thirty am, watched North By Northwest with Cary Grant & Eva Marie Saint, a Alfred Hitchcock drama, I REALLY like Cary Grant, especially An Affair To Remember, my girls & I would watch it together if we got a chance, Love you girls!!!
Just watched the classic "North By Northwest". Eva Marie Saint is still acting .. she's in the current movie "Winter's Tale". She will be 90 in July.
If Lebron was on Mount Rushmore Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint would have slid right off his giant forehead and died in N…
Kid in a blue sweater on the right plugging his ears in anticipation of Eva Marie Saint shooting Cary Grant
I can watch this whole film just for scenes of Eva Marie Saint's amazing dark red floral dress.
Hitchcock rejected MGM designer Helen Rose's costumes for Eva Marie Saint and instead took her shopping at Bergdorf Goodman
Eva Marie Saint has a cameo in the newly released A Winter's Tale. And she is 89.
Eva Marie Saint is the only reason to see the new film WINTER'S TALE. And maybe seeing Lady Sybil alive again.
I asked Eva Marie Saint in front of 400 fans, "c'mon, between you & me, Brando or Grant?". She laughed & said "my husband, of course"
Eva Marie Saint is The Perfect Woman in this film. Friend of my wife's family and she's still gorgeous at 89.
I don't know...I actually know a few couples who met on a train. Not that they're Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint...
I've even seen Eva Marie Saint introduce it in a theater at least four times. And yet still I MUST watch.
At 89, Eva Marie Saint is 'still in the ballgame'
MMR – *New Movie Release* Winter’s Tale (PG-13) (Drama/Mystery) In Theaters Now "Winter’s Tale” combines a superb cast with an even more impressive story to make a film that is easy to love. It is a delicate romantic fantasy that requires that you willingly suspend your disbelief and give yourself over to it. Cynics need not apply. Because it is fearlessly sincere and not totally successful, "Winter's Tale" is easy to mock. But it is also hard not to admire its willingness to go all out in its quest for the grandest of romantic gestures. Although almost two hours is too long for a movie of this sort, I didn't find myself looking at my watch too many times because the story grabbed me and the acting is so good. The chemistry between Farrell and Findlay is palpable. With a strong Academy Award winning cast that includes Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, and Colin Farrell, William Hurt, and Eva Marie Saint, it is still worth the look on this romantic weekend for lovers. MMR gives this film 2 out ...
Eva Marie Saint won a supporting actress Oscar for her luminous film debut as Marlon Brando's character's girlfriend in Elia Kazan's landmark 1954 drama, "On the Waterfront." And she's given memorable turns with Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 "North By Northwest," Paul Newman in Otto Preminge...
The octogenarian stays in the pictures: Eva Marie Saint on her ‘little cameo’ in Winter’s Tale
Winter’s Tale Starring: Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe Directed by: Akiva Goldsman 0/5 stars By Timothy M. Stoneman February 15, 2014 For a supernatural fable about faith, miracles and the incarnate battles between good and evil spirits that spans over a century this uninvolving and lifeless needs to die alone and stay that way. While definitely not another bogus Nicholas Sparks book turned into tearjerker (thank heavens for that) we get Mark Helprin’s 1983 novel “Winter’s Tale”, adapted by “A Beautiful Mind” Oscar winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, making his debut as a director. Poor, Goldsman. If only the veteran writer had a more romantic connection for his two central stars and a script, which he wrote himself, that had more enlightenment to give for itself. The plot indicates the struggles of orphan turned master thief Peter Lake (Colin Farrell in a more urgently clueless role) living in an alternative Manhattan in the year 1916. He’s being chased around by the ...
Tom and I went to see A Winter's Tale last night. Sweet movie! If you are one of those folks who cannot suspend belief and get into the fantasy, you won't like it. If you have been morning the loss of Lady Sybil on Downton's Abbey, you will see where she went as she is the romantic lead in this movie. The movie is a bit clumsy but we enjoyed it. It has a great cast, word is the director called in a number of favors. Collen Farrel, Russel Crow, Will Smith, Jennifer Connely, William Hurt and, the wonderful to see, Eva Marie Saint. Go to the matinee.
Eva Marie Saint, Jennifer Connelly on romance and 'Winter's Tale' via
Well I got to see Winter's Tale yesterday. Absolutely outstanding movie! Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Jessica Brown-Findlay, Jennifer Connelly and Eva Marie Saint did an amazing job! I have read some not so good reviews of it. Really makes me wonder if these reporters saw the same movie I did. I highly recommend seeing it. I will see it again! 5 stars
WINTER'S TALE I don't have a freakin' clue what I just saw. By the end I found myself trying to figure out how such an esteemed cast (Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Will Smith, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, Eva Marie Saint, and more) could all have been conned into being a part of this mess of confusion masquerading as profundity. Then it all made sense when the credits rolled and I saw that it was written and directed by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman. Here's the problem, though. Yes, that's right Russell, Akiva wrote A BEAUTIFUL MIND for you. Yes, that's right Will, Akiva wrote I AM LEGEND for you. However, need I remind all of you that he also wrote.BATMAN AND ROBIN and those awful DAVINCI CODE movies. 'Nuff said. Maybe it depends on his sobriety levels or something, but clearly his screenwriting swings like a bi-polar wrecking ball in terms of quality or coherence. I'll give you a snapshot of the massive incoherence. None of it is spoilers because you aren't going to go see th ...
...why did Eva Marie Saint have to be dragged into that?!
Eva Marie Saint's character should be 110 years old! Central Park doesn't back into he Hudson River! Colin Farrell's hair! No sense.

A Tale out of Season Winter's Tale-PG-13-** There are some stories that should remain novels. This is a prime example. A religious fantasy by Mark Halpern, it involves Colin Farrell as Peter Lake, an orphan who came to America Moses-like as the sole passenger of a toy schooner, “The City of Justice.” Oddly enough, he retained a strong Irish accent though thoroughly American. He falls in love at first sight with the defunct Lady Sibyl from “Downton Abbey,” Jessica Brown Findlay as heiress Beverly Penn. It is appropriate that her character died on Downton Abbey because Beverly Penn has a limited time on Earth as well--she’s consumptive. She is also the target of Russell Crowe, the arch-villain Pearly Soames, aka the Demon. His master on Earth is Will Smith as “The Judge,” aka Lucifer. The Judge and Pearly want Peter’s soul as well as those of the rest of humanity, but they’re losing because this is a story of hope and resurrection. The Good Guys are assisted by a miraculous Horse of White ...
Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint on board the twentieth century limited en route to Chicago
Eva Marie Saint and Colin Farrell aren't each others' love interests in their new film "Winter's Tale," about a romance that spans space...
Happy Friday, and Happy Valentine's Day! In addition to "About Last Night" and "Endless Love", opening wide today is "Winter's Tale". The romantic drama is the feature film directorial debut of Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman ("A Beautiful Mind"). The film stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint and Russell Crowe. What do YOU plan to see this weekend?
Diana Rigg, Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint and Audrey Hepburn. Each of them intelligent, beautiful and talented. I was born in the wrong era. I don't get the likes of Madonna, Lady Gag or Miley. 'Liberated' or not, they are not women. There's nothing sexy about them.
Colin Farrell: Eva Marie Saint was 'a dream' to work with. Colin Farrell, who has expressed in the past his great esteem for film icons like Peter O'Toole and Elizabeth Taylor, says sharing the screen with Eva Marie Saint in the supernatural romance "Winter's Tale" was a career highlight for him.
Director Nichols' actual first choice for Mrs. Robinson was French actress Jeanne Moreau. Doris Day declined the offer; not a role for her. Patricia Neal turned down the film b/c just had a stroke. Geraldine Page also declined the part. Jane Fonda turned down both the roles of Mrs. Robinson and Elaine! Joan Crawford, Ava Gardner, Angela Lansbury, Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn all coveted the role. 11 other actresses were considered for the part including: Claire Bloom, Angie Dickinson, Judy Garland, Rita Hayworth, Jennifer Jones, Deborah Kerr, Eva Marie Saint, Simone Signoret, Jean Simmons, Lana Turner, and Shelley Winters.
Winter's Tale movie explores love, miracles in adult fairy tale Updated today at 06:54 AM New York (REUTERS) - Fairy tales are not only for children and Winter's Tale, the film adaptation of a best-selling book, aims to lure even jaded, middle-aged adults into believing in the magic of eternal love and the power of miracles. The film, which opens in United States theatres on Valentine's Day, is based on Mark Helprin's 1983 fantasy novel of the same name, and stars Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell (In Bruges) as a burglar who falls in love with an heiress played by English actress Jessica Brown Findlay, of TV's Downton Abbey. Set in the early 1900s in a mythical New York with cobble-stone streets, stately mansions and thieving street gangs and also in the present, Winter's Tale is a romance that transcends time with magical elements such as a flying white horse and a hero who exists for 100 years without ageing. "This is a fairy tale for grown-ups," said first-time director Akiva Goldsman, who won an Osca ...
It's time for Larry's useless trivia! (I'm going to trademark this) Eva Marie Saint was the female lead in "on the waterfront", However with the best actress field was to come down to Grace Kelly and Judy Garland, Saint's manager put her in the best supporting actress category, in which she won the Oscar for it.
Everyone ought to go watch the old movie starring Eva Marie Saint and Paul Newman, Exodus!. It'll give you a flavor of the rebirth of the nation of Israel. GREAT movie!

I don't expect many of you to be familiar with Arsenic and Old Lace (shame on you!) but I'm sure you know Mr. Grant from something if not North By Northwest. Eva Marie Saint may be a different story. If you're not familiar with NxNW maybe On the Waterfront (if you don't know that one don't admit it to me lol). If not either maybe some of her more recent work... Because of Winn-Dixie or Superman Returns? Considering the average age those able to see this and depending on how well your memory works you might remember her as Mrs. Hayes, mother of Maddie Hayes on Moonlighting. The most recent thing she's done will be released in two days, Winter's Tale, in which she stars with Colin Farrell, Russell Crow, William Hurt, Graham Greene, Will Smith, Jennifer Connelly, and a ton of other people.
