Eric Garner & Tamir Rice

Eric Garner, aged 43, was an American man from Staten Island, New York, who died after a New York City Police Department officer, Daniel Pantaleo, put him in a chokehold which may have contributed to Garner's fatal heart attack. The shooting of Tamir Rice, a twelve-year-old African American boy, occurred on November 22, 2014, in Cleveland, Ohio. 5.0/5

“White radicals should quit acting as though they “discovered” the struggle against police terrorism just today, and can thus lecture others who have been doing this work all of our lives. I know of too many cases of Black People who have been killed just like Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, or Michael Brown. literally tens of thousands have been murdered since the 1980’s, and there have been very few organizers or mass movements arisen. White people have not wanted to acknowledge this at all. It was fought on the local level by Black and Brown community activists, and the families of police murder victims. It is good that millions have gotten involved, but you cannot tell those of us who know the facts first-hand you are now some expert.” — Lorenzo Kom’boa Ervin

"Stop the protests so we can bury our fallen heroes in peace and with respect." Let me remind you: It's not like you allowed the 40-plus unarmed people killed by police this year to be buried with sanctuary. The tag was still on Tamir Rice's toe as the media dug up his parents' criminal records. Less than 24 hours after his body ended up in the morgue, you were calling Eric Garner a fat criminal who caused his own death. You want Black People and our interracial allies to stand down in silence and share in your collective grief, but never mind that your tools of the State kept their fingers on the trigger all summer long and killed 14 unarmed black teenagers while we waited for the Ferguson Grand Jury to make a decision in the Mike Brown killing. And as I now listen to you call these cop killings "barbaric executions" that were "an attack on us all," and an affront to our "democratic principles," I am not forgetting how so many of you across this country use those same tongues to debate whether the slaugh ...

-- NEW on the David Muhammad of the National Council On Crime And Delinquency (NCCD) discusses why is about more than just police killings: "I watched the March and rally organized by Reverend Al Sharpton in the nation’s capital recently. Toward the end of the event, he brought up numerous families of the countless Black men murdered by police in cities throughout America. It was a stage full of pain. The mothers of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Amadou Diallo and many more. It inspired great emotion and passion. Somehow, the everyday injustice in America does not evoke the same response. Gross racial disparities in arrests, prosecutions, incarceration, violations of probation and parole, and sentencing destroy millions of Black lives. Though the magnitude is much greater, it does not inspire the level of anger that a video of a White officer murdering a Black man does."
I do blame Bill Warren Wilhelm Deblasio, New York City Mayor, in the death of the two police officers who were just martyred. I do blame Barack Hussein Obama. I and my loved ones have had negative experiences with cops and my gut reaction to police is negative. I'm not saying that that is rational. I'm saying that that is my gut reaction. I am NOT knee jerk pro cop and anti protester. I've been a protester plenty of times in my life. I have been arrested. Etc. Here's the thing, though. Bill Deblasio said, paraphrase, "All people of color have a talk with their sons and tell them to do everything a police officer tells them to do. Not to make any sudden moves. Because they will be misinterpreted by police because they are people of color." Deblasio was lying. Not all black parents have that conversation with their children. Deblasio was lying. In the most recent high profile deaths, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, suspects were not obeying police and doing nothing suspicious. Brown was a thief and ...

The things that have gutted me and brought me to sudden tears this week are not the outrages and indignities, not the way the media STILL reports that Eric Garner was (maybe) selling loosies and using the phrase "strong-arm robbery," a term that has only been part of our common lexicon since the police used it to as red meat against Michael Brown, or even the fact that they handcuffed Tamir Rice's teenage sister to keep her away from her dying brother. It was the little details revealed by their surviving relatives in interviews that weren't deemed worthy of becoming sound bites. Tamir Rice was not allowed to play with guns and volunteered at his church to teach younger kids computer skills. John Crawford was buying graham *** chocolate bars and marshmallows for a family picnic. Eric Garner and his son played dueling remotes on game day. The media doesn't see those things as relevant, but they are - they are the context of their lives and their humanity.
It's discouraging when well-meaning white folks (I'm talking *mostly* to the hippies and the baby boomers here) join the cause but want to change it to a humanist cause. This country is facing SO MUCH crisis, and yes, they all deserve attention. But we're going to keep focusing on racism because racism needs to be focused on. When you try to change the narrative it undermines the message. A revolution has begun. And we are all interested in all of the things that need changing-- from the wage gap, to the labor movement, to women's rights, to the criminalization of the homeless. All of these things matter. And when I march, I march for all of these reasons. But when I protest I'm going to keep the message on point. Because Tamir Rice, Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, John Crawford III, and all of the other countless black men who have been killed and/or brutalized by police (and all the others who fear for their lives) deserve to be in the spotlight for once. If you held a fund raiser to spread awa ...
YOU ARE INVITED TO GET INVOLVED! STOP THE KILLING!!! ORGANIZING COMMITTEE A Call To Action: All Roads Lead To Phoenix Dec.16, 20, 22 Across this country a persistent flurry of unjust police shootings, acts of excessive force, and wanton police violence has and will continue to rob our communities of the lives of our brothers and sisters. We must respond. Just this year we've added Mike Brown - Eric Garner - Michelle Cusseaux - Tamir Rice - Ballentine Mbegbu - Rumain Brisbon and many other names to the ever growing list of victims. Victims, sacrificed to the evil trinity of police brutality, racial profiling, and antiquated policies that instill in law enforcement a seemingly insatiable drive to criminally dehumanize people. The time for action is at hand. As a result of the latest case of a preventable police related fatality, we are organizing a town hall & march in Phoenix, Arizona to refocus our energies and redouble our efforts for a national push to solve this pandemic of hate defined violence. i know that many of y'all may not agree or at least completely agree, but i starting to get a little fed up with the whole civil rights news going around the U.S. Not granted that yes in each of these cases there is someone that has died by either officers or of white people. In Trayvon Martin's case, yes i do believe that he could have had justice there because the details were too sketchy and there was too many different pieces of evidence that went both ways for trayvon and Zimmerman. the case with Michael Brown shows that he was stealing and he matched the description, and from reports, he charged towards the officer and was grabbing for his gun which is why the officer and shot him. people said that he was running away from the officer when he got killed, but brown didn't have a wound on the back of his body, but the front, this coming from an autopsy report. The case with Eric Garner, I can honestly say that i do feel bad for his death and that in this situation, officers did not need to be as viole ...

Washington march: Civil rights protest over US police killings Thousands of people have marched through the US capital, Washington DC, to protest against the recent killings of unarmed Black People by police. Relatives of Michael Brown, shot dead in the Missouri town of Ferguson, and Eric Garner, who died being restrained in New York, were among them. Both died after encountering police, but grand juries decided not to bring charges, sparking anger and unrest. A demonstration in New York also drew thousands despite chilly weather. Speakers at the Capitol called for changes to US legislation. Lesley McSpadden, mother of Michael Brown, told the crowd: "What a sea of people. If they don't see this and make a change, then I don't know what we got to do. Thank you for having my back." The mood in the US capital was described as calm but defiant, with a large number of police on standby. Earlier in the day, a small group of protesters from Missouri disrupted the schedule by taking to the stage at the starting-p ...
Video clips from today's march against racism and police brutality and murders of Black People, specifically Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and DJ Henry, among too many others. Black Lives Matter!
Yesterday in Washington.. Was powerful & very inspirational to me in every aspect. The way everyone came together for the cause really inspired me on various levels to want change not only to myself.. But to others that matter to me. All I can say is to those that weren't able to attend is that you should've been there! Some of the guest speakers in attendance were Rev. Al Sharpton, Spike Lee, Donnie Mcclurkin, & Judge Joe Mathis just to name a few. Also the families of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, & Tamir Rice were in attendance all with powerful messages. Yesterday will definitely be a moment in history that I'll remember for the rest of my life!! United we stand.. Divided we fall wasn't only a message.. But a movement!!! ..Slavery has never been abolished from America's way of thinking.. *Nina Simone*
Stan Savran is a commentator in Pittsburgh and between periods of the Penguins-Blue Jackets game on Monday night the veteran broadcaster dropped an incredibly insensitive remark. Speaking with Jay Caufield, Savran made light of the Eric Garner situation: "I thought, Jay, the Penguins would have to put on those 'I Cant' Breathe' t-shirts for a while because Columbus was suffocating," said Savran. That's pretty obtuse when it comes to understanding the levity of the situation in Staten Island and the continued unrest brought on not just by Garner's death but the deaths of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice.

The strange behaviors of officers after they killed Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, & Eric Garner.
It's hard to stay positive and keep fighting when people are steady trying to say that nothing is wrong about men like Eric Garner and John Crawford, and boys like Tamir Rice being killed by the people who are supposed to serve and protect them. Then those officers don't even have to face trial. People act like it's no big deal. I don't get it. This isn't an attack against police as individuals, but the system as a whole. When will it be enough? A man with six kids didn't do it for you? A 22 year old man (shopping and minding his own business) with an infant and a new born didn't do it for you? What about the 12 year old boy, Tamir Rice, who was playing alone at his neighborhood park? Police shot him SECONDS after arriving on the scene. What's it going to take for more people to pay attention and admit we have a problem? What would it take for you?

Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, & Eric Garner were killed by police not because they were black, but because police claim to own us all.

From Sunday Times: "Rumain Brisbon, 34, a black father of four, was shot dead on Tuesday night after a bottle of pills he was holding was confused by officers for a gun." "Tamir Rice, 12, killed by police in Cleveland, Ohio, two weeks ago while holding a toy pellet gun." The Police lied about how much time the CHILD was given to drop the "gun" (was actually about 1-2 seconds?!) Michael Brown, etc etc. Times like this I'm thankful I don't live in the US.
Cameras Didn’t Save Tamir Rice, Eric Garner: It seems many Americans think recent policing issues can be remed...
so do you even care for the murders of Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Mike Brown or Trayvon Martin? etc? or do you only care about +
Not just Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, and Eric Garner- This is a NATIONAL EPIDEMIC. A massacre. Wake up. htt…
This is a thread about Next Steps. We're discussing on takepart live tonight FYI, but my question goes beyond the show. What happens after Tamir Rice, Mike Brown, Eric Garner, et al to prevent [Your Name Here] from being added to the list? What are well-meaning people to actually do? What good efforts need money or votes? What procedures need to be put in place, etc? Add your constructive ideas and links to the comments. I'll start us off in the comments myself.
Eric Garner won't be home for Christmas. Tamir Rice won't be home for Christmas. Mike Brown won't be home for Christmas
I Can't Breath for Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Renisha McBride,Trayvon Martin and .countless others. by jessica Care moore I'm in Detroit & i can't breathe the air is being sucked out of my city the poor don't have water & everything new means no *** I can't breathe there is a smoking gun down my throat with promises of a post racial america i can't swallow the chamber. it is stuck in 1967 & it keeps reloading after it pierces the bodies of our unarmed babies. I can't breathe cause i'm being rushed on a sidewalk in the middle of a peaceful protest by a militarized police force in Missouri they are yelling "i got one" "i got one" i am half running, distraught searching for Talib's hand Rosa is a few steps ahead the air is thick & ugly & dense & i can't breathe cause now i'm being forced to lie face down on the cement in Ferguson with an AR15 pointed at my back. a long brown teenage boy is shaking in Rosa's lap A young thick girl stands up anyway. i pull her back down, and ask her to please wai ...
Yes, I am glad some conservatives are coming out and saying Eric Garner didn’t “deserve” to die, but I think we should be deeply disturbed by the underlying message that somehow Michael Brown or Tamir Rice or Trayvon Martin did deserve to die. This smacks of the heretical teaching infesting our churches: the deserving vs. the undeserving poor. If Michael Brown “deserved” to be shot for stealing cigarillos then shouldn’t Bernie Madoff be torn limb from limb?
Eric Garner, 43. Michael Brown, 18. Tamir Rice, 12, and the way police officers view skin color... "When you wear the badge, you're above the law." oh no.. that's only in "third world countries" Guess what, the country of "civil rights & constitutional rights" is doing it too!
I think I just made my mother cry today... She called me while at work and the convo went like this. Mom: How are you doing? Feeling better? (I'm having sinus problems) Me: I've got a headache (due to said sinus issues)... and being Black in America is wearing me down. We proceed to talk about Eric Garner. Then I tell her about the 37 people that were killed in Kenya as I look at a picture of their corpses laying on the ground. I inform her about AJ Cooper and DJ Reid, the latter who was a year behind me in HS and passed away. Then I tell her that while some people stay on top of the news, because of my job, I'm literally inundated with news, so it effects me regularly, on top of whatever is happening with me personally. She tells me she will never get over Trayvon Martin for he reminds her too much of me: a kid walking in her gated community on the phone with a hoodie on. And then we talk about John Crawford and Tamir Rice. And then I say that being Black is not a choice, it's a calling. And how at some ...
Black folks are finally awakening from an almost SIX decade long sleep. So what you should've learned in these few weeks following Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, And soon to be another unknown Black victim is... 1. amerikkka is a racist nation and has been one ever since Europeans invaded these shores. 2. The police and other racist white groups brutalize and murder us almost everyday. 3. The courts discriminate against us and seldom afford us justice 4. We have thousands in prisons who have no business being there and thousands more that NEED to be there but aren't. (They're usually white) 5. The mass media consistently and persistently depicts -not only dead Black victims- but Black People in generally in a negative, degrading, and insulting way. 6. Black People are tried and convicted on the television and in newspapers before they ever see a courtroom...IF they EVER see a courtroom. Since it has taken back-to-back homicides by the hands of these beast to wake Black People up, I thought I might . ...
I wear a hoodie every day to the gym. So does my husband. A friend recently told me he would never wear a hoodie. Not coincidentally, he is a tall African American. Those who never think about the danger of wearing a hoodie are likely not tall African Americans. They don't think that what happened to Michael Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner of Staten Island, 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, and to too many other African American men would ever happen to them. In each case, the individual details are combed through by grand juries --and police are exonerated as having done what seemed warranted at the time. The point is, these cases started because each assumed a large African American--with or without hoodie-- was potentially dangerous, was potentially carrying a gun, and would need to be dealt with brute force if any action or verbal response was deemed dangerous. This is a larger problem, and every time police are exonerated, it continues to obscure the larger problem of perception and action.
Tell A.G. Eric Holder and Pres. Obama: indict Officer Pantaleo on federal criminal charges: Dear US Attorney General Eric Holder and Department of Justice, I urge you to bring federal charges against Eric Garner's killer and investigate the discriminatory NYPD patterns and practices, such as the "Broken Windows" policing tactic that led to this tragic police killing. A New York City Grand Jury has refused to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo who targeted and choked Eric Garner to death. Many believe that the NYPD conducted an unlawful stop of Eric Garner; witnesses say he was breaking up a fight, not selling untaxed cigarettes as the NYPD claims. That illegal stop quickly escalated, with fatal consequences. Multiple NYPD Officers can be seen on camera, brutally slamming Garner to the ground and applying pressure to his neck despite him repeatedly saying "I can't breathe." And despite the fact that the entire deadly altercation was caught on camera, the criminal justice system has once again failed to hold a ...
"If you get upset over abortion but shrug...over Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Tamir are not pro life"
Officers involved in killing of both Tamir Rice and Eric Garner each lost previous lawsuits for excessive force. This is not…
I want body cameras on all my police is a step in the right direction but people really need to realize that this will not be enough it doesn't matter what's on the camera. What matters is what you see. when I see Eric Garner and Tamir rice on camera, I see a child and a father being murdered. But what the majority of sees are monsters being put down. How can We solve issues if we can't even agree on who is basically human?
I could cry for the African American community right now. My father has always preached that I can only control myself but man……. My heart is hurting for all the injustice that's taking place right now. I understand that the system cannot protect a person it was never created for BUT I feel helpless right now. It's bigger than Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, and Eric Garner. Now I know that we've come a long way from being royalty kidnapped by "Barbarians" back in the late 1600's to come to some foreign land that was stolen from Native Americans. But in grade school we have text books that try to down play the significance of our presence of being in America since we've came here. And I'm sickened with the ignorance that I see coming from my people because 5 out of 10 people were never taught our history before the chains we wore that brought us here. And yes I don't have to deal with Jim Crow laws but EVEN AS AN African American WOMAN WHO SERVES THIS COUNTRY I TOO STILL DEAL WITH INEQUALITY DUE TO THE COLOR ...
Someone's gotta say it: police unions are a huge problem. In every major case, from Mike Brown to Eric Garner to Tamir Rice, the police unions have backed the cops. Now I love unions, and they are necessary. But police officers have a different sort of job than any other public or private employee has. They have power and authority and guns. They are often above the law. In that context, unions don't make sense. Police should be directly and invariably accountable to THE PEOPLE who they patrol. Period. No other organization needs to "have their back", because the judicial system already does. The Justice system is the cops Union, they protect them at every level. Grand Jury non-indictments are a sobering reminder of that fact. Police unions are obstructionist. They need to either be radically reformed (de-clawed), or they need to be ditched entirely.
Amadou Diallo, Abner Louima, Rodney King, Treyvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner... these are only the cases we have heard about. Even our current president has experienced threatening racial profiling. Enlightened police training is effective but bad apples shouldn't be protected. It implicates all the good police who are doing the right thing and following humane and respectful procedures. Justice served on the bad apples helps the good police to be trusted.
Michael Brown is dead. Eric Garner is dead. 12 year old Tamir Rice is dead. All of them supposedly justified & necessary. Now, James Eagan Holmes shot & killed 12 people in a movie theater with an AR15 back in 2012. He was arrested shortly afterwards outside of the theater. -_- I wasn't going to say anything, but something isn't quite right with this picture.
The clock is ticking... If people don't come together and start implementing some viable effective strategies it is going to get UgLaY. We will finally understand who & what these concentration camps were built for. Mike Brown... 12year old, Tamir Rice... Eric Garner... Who's life lost next will be enough motivation to get involved? We can no longer put it off, we are at the cusp of a division that will completely set it off. People are walking into a trap. Who & when will we do something? Its you. It's me. And the time is NOW. Tic Toc Homie.
I understand people arguing Mike Brown, but someone please argue the Eric Garner, or Tamir Rice?
I am amazed that, while people are demonstrating about Michael Brown and Eric Garner, we don't see the same response for Tamir Rice -- he was 12 YEARS OLD!
In the wake of the failure to indict the police who killed Eric Garner, I wanted to talk about the role of violence and the legitimacy of the nation-state, but instead I need to talk about Chuck D and Ice Cube. By way of background, I was a young teenager in the late 1980s living in the town of Rutland, Vermont. Our state was rural, poor, peaceful, and 98.1% Caucasian. I remember distinctly when I first heard the sounds of Public Enemy and N.W.A. rip through the speaker cones of boom boxes, even on our distant mountainside. The first time I heard "Bring the Noise" and "Straight Outta Compton," I thought two things: First, I have absolutely no idea what kind of life these men are referencing. Second, they sound serious as *** This musical trend moved millions of units sold, launched hundreds of record deals, exploded the stereos of young people of every race, and inspired some stern tut-tutting of white parents. "So strident, you know - not really music. And inciting violence against the police!" I remem . ...
Side-eye on a hundred trillion for my white friends who have yet to speak up about Ferguson, Eric Garner, or Tamir Rice...You'll like my statuses about feminist-y stuff but not my racial justice stuff. You can't be against one type of oppression while turning the other cheek towards another
But actually though, if you are trying to justify why it's OKAY for the police to have killed Mike Brown, Eric Garner and Tamir Rice--unarmed citizens doing things white people do all the time-- then ask yourself how much Black Lives Matter to you and whether you would feel differently if they were white.
After seeing more evidence about the Ferguson Grand Jury, I think the process in Ferguson was handled unusually and that the officer got special treatment. I also think that if the jury had chosen to indict, a trial would have produced a not guilty verdict. The officer's story seems credible to me and I think there is reason to believe the officer acted in legal self defense (though I still think he could have tazed or pepper sprayed Brown instead if his story that Brown was attacking him is true). That said, I now think the protesters have justification to protest since this process was handled so badly. Furthermore, the cases of Tamir Rice and Eric Garner prove that the problem of excessive violence against unarmed black males is still huge in our society. Rice was a twelve year old boy killed by an officer who couldn't tell the difference between a real gun and a fake one or a nine year old and a grown man, and couldn't be bothered to attempt to negotiate with what he thought was a man with a gun, whic ...
RIP Eric Garner , Trayvon Martin , Tamir Rice , Mike Brown , Troy Davis and all the young black men killed at the hands if the law 🙏
RIP Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Micheal Brown, Tamir Rice, Troy Davis and all other innocent African American murdered by the system
If you arent convinced the deaths of Trayvon, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, John Crawford, & Eric Garner were racially motivated, you are BLIND
Praying for the family of Mike Brown, John Crawford, Eric Garner, Darrien Hunt, Vonderrit Myers & Tamir Rice this holiday season...

This is happening to all generations in 2014. Eric Garner, generation above me. Mike Brown, my generation. Tamir Rice, generation below.
"The cure for the Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice & Eric Garner tragedies is not education or exposure. It's the Gospel."
We must not forget about Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, John Crawford, James Boyd & so many others police have murdered
People cared more about Mike Brown because of people like Tamir Rice and Jordan Crawford and Eric Garner.
