This is a press statement from Four NGOs which requested for the Department of Environment to question the findings of the Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment Report. - Federal Government snubs NGOs on KIDEX Four national NGOs express concern that the Federal Government’s Department of Environment has ignored their request for a detailed environmental and social assessment of the controversial Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (KIDEX), and reiterate their concerns about the adverse impacts of constructing a fully elevated expressway over established residential suburbs and urban areas. On 4 June 2014, four national non-governmental organizations (NGOs) - Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP), Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), Environmental Protection Society Malaysia (EPSM) and Third World Network (TWN) - concerned about KIDEX wrote to the Department of Environment (DOE) calling into question the findings of the preliminary environmental impact assessment (PEIA) undertaken for the project. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council tonight proposed that: This council is totally opposed to shale gas exploration and extraction by the process of hydraulic fracturing otherwise known as "fracking." This council calls on the Minister for the Environment to move immediately in order to prevent the drilling of boreholes associated with fracking and further move to prevent the process of fracking taking place. Tamboran be forced to do and pay for an Environmental Impact Assessment. The NI Executive be recalled to discuss the matter. It was proposed by Cllr John Feely from Co Fermanagh and seconded by Cllr Frankie Donnelly from Co Tyrone. Cllr Alex Baird from Co Fermanagh and Cllr Rosemarie Sheilds from Co Tyrone made additions to the proposal. All 38 Councillors present agreed to the proposal.
Constantly expanding Mission Fields. Plentiful Harvests. But Few Labourers. You can change this outlook by doing all of these: Praying for more labourers, becoming a labourer yourself and encouraging someone else to join you. The Environmental Impact Assessment reveals, on one hand, that many more souls would be lost if you sit down and do nothing. On the other hand, many more souls would be saved if you act now.

The surface of a pool near the Imfolozi river ripples as a white rhino, its young calf close by, lowers its mouth to drink. Rhinos have roamed the Earth in such a way for 40 million years. Humans, by comparison, are new kids on the block. Yet it is modern man that threatens to drive these stately creatures to extinction. Figures released last week show that 558 rhinos have been slaughtered in South Africa so far in 2014, putting it on course to be the deadliest year of poaching since records began. Well-armed gangs continue to run riot, shooting the animals with impunity and hacking off their horns, said to be more than worth their weight in gold on the black market. Now conservationists warn of a new threat – voracious mining – that could drive the endangered animals to the brink. The Hluhluwe-Imfolozi park in KwaZulu-Natal province, a natural oasis abundant in elephants, leopards, lions and more than 300 bird species, is arguably the world’s greatest rhino sanctuary and ground zero in the battle t ...

As a lot of you know we have started a New NGO here in Ghana and it is about reclaiming the land that has been mined and has not been reclaimed in any way. Well there have been questions to the point of how do I know exactly how to go about setting up a procedure for this type of project, so I decided to sit down and write a little White Paper on how to reclaim mined out lands. The following is what I have submitted to the Government of Ghana that got me so widly approved for this project, see if you like it. Reclamation Solutions for the Galamsey & Chinese Mined Lands left in Ghana Small scale mining activities which involve surface mining is an acceptable means of mineral exploitation in Ghana but has serious environmental consequences. Here is a piece I have lifted from the ABP inspectors report. "The Board is satisfied that the public would not have been misinformed in any material way as to the principal nature and extent of the proposed development, and that the rights of the public to participate in the planning, environmental impact assessment and appropriate assessment processes have not been infringed". Words just fail me here...for anyone that sat through even a few hours of that oral hearing , isn't that an unbelievable thing for ABP to say?? That statement by the inspector is just outrageous. It is a blatant lie. Is the inspector saying that the letter from the Eirgrid project manager to them from 2009 in which was written "this station is for the future connection of renewables (windfarms)" is false???It is just not conceivable that the inspector is satisfied that the public have not been misinformed by Eirgrid, that somehow Eirgrid fulfilled all its public participation requirements. This absolutely stinks. This is so blatan ...

MoEF identifies issues in eco-fragile Aravalli - GURGAON: The NCR planning board was given a list of nearly 20 pressing environmental issues by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) that were discussed in detail, a day before the former was to hold an important meeting regarding approval of the Haryana sub-regional plan. Some of the issues mentioned include identifying forests as per the dictionary meaning in all NCR states as directed by the Supreme Court, identifying forest cover and green cover separately in land use maps, maintaining a target of 20% forest cover, protecting areas under Aravalli notification, conducting environmental impact assessment for all plans, adhering to the carrying capacity of the region, etc. Another important recommendation of the MoEF was “to maintain the Mangar Bani grove in Faridabad, Haryana, as an essential buffer”. It was to be zoned as a permanent sacred forest zone in which no construction is allowed. The MoEF has also taken note of allowing more than 0. ...

HRCP seeks CJ’s help to protect temple in Karachi HRCP | March 21, 2014 Lahore, March 21: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has sought the intervention of the chief justice of Pakistan to protect an old Hindu temple in Karachi that is threatened by the construction of underpasses and flyovers at Clifton. In a letter sent to the chief justice, the HRCP chairperson noted that business interests in complicity with officials of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) had started construction of multiple flyovers and underpasses around the Clifton seafront without any prior notice. She noted that such a major venture “which would vandalize the very face of a historical part of the city, has not undergone the Environmental Impact Assessment (with public hearings) mandated by law”. The chairperson highlighted HRCP’s deep concern over the adverse impact that this project could have on the more than 150 years old Sri Ratneswar Mahadev temple located within a few meters of one of the underpa ...

BIG NEWS!!! On 24 April 2014, the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress voted to pass the 4th Draft of the Amendment Protection weight given to officials to punish environmental violations. This is the first legislative change in the Environmental Protection Law since it was enacted in 1989. The 37 new articles should help the MEP wield a “bigger stick”. Key changes in this regard for polluting enterprises and institutions are: -Naming & Shaming -Penalties & Fines -Shutdown -Criminal & Other Punishments -Environmental Impact Assessments -Government Officials’ Environmental Protection Target Responsibility & Appraisal System -Litigation & Civil Suits See more in our notice:
A letter to us all regarding what is to follow, from Marian Laserson (Johannesburg) Dear Lynne, I think you have done magnificently. I am very grateful to you for your tenacity and perseverance. I will still be working on the issue over the week-end in order to get more people to meet the deadline for the application for township establishment. However, the period for commenting on the Environmental Impact Assessment being conducted by Bokamoso is still open. In fact, anyone is welcome to submit comments to Bokamoso up until the Record of Decision (ROD) is given by the administering authority. Even then, if we are not happy with the ROD, we can appeal. All of this could postpone the whole project for a good year or even longer. Also, it is just faintly possible that the administering authority will give a negative ROD and this will stop the project. In the event of a positive ROD and the City Council approving the township application, we still can resort to litigation. That, however, could cost up to ...
I call upon the Commonwealth Department of Environment to reject the proposal to continue the WA Government’s shark cull for a further three years. I believe the proposal is environmentally unacceptable, and should be rejected for the following reasons: The initial ‘trial’ shark cull has been a failure. It has not improved public safety and the vast majority of sharks caught have been non-target by-catch with a very high mortality rate. Sharks are apex predators, their roles are vital to keep the health of the ocean in balance. Removing or reducing the population of a migratory apex predator from our marine ecosystem is likely to have significant impacts on the species composition and abundance of other marine life; Baited hooks used to kill sharks present an unacceptable risk to other marine life including turtles, dolphins and other non-target sharks. Several of these species are also protected under the EPBC Act; White sharks (the target species), Whaler Sharks (incl Tiger and Bull) and Grey Nurs ...

Hi all, if you can find a spare moment today please contact your MEPs ahead of an important EU vote relating to the EIA Directive and fracking! Tomorrow an important vote is taking place in the European Parliament's Environment Committee. This vote concerns the review of the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive which passed through the European Council in recent months. Please read on to see why it's important, why it involves fracking and HOW TO TAKE ACTION. Why it's important: In brief: The current legal situation in the EU does not guarantee a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for fracking operations. This gap in EU law infringes the precautionary principle, a cornerstone of EU law, as well as regional planning goals. Unfortunately what thhe European Commission has delivered is just a set of non-binding recommendations. For more details: read this joint letter signed by 414 civil society organisations including the Environmental Pillar TAKE ACTION See this excellent advice by Frackin ...

Debate heats up on dry dock issue Questions are being raised on how the Lami foreshore area was about to be used for IMEL's floating dry dock repair works without any public consultations or an Environmental Impact Assessment. Fijivillage questioned Lami's Special Administrator, Jasper Singh about the dry dock near the recreational area on Monday and he had told us that he had no idea. We had noticed that the dry dock set up had already begun on Monday. Singh later confirmed that IMEL has now been told to stop all work and to ensure that proper consultations with all stakeholders are held. A special public forum is organised for the stakeholders at Lami Town Council office this afternoon however Singh says it will be a closed door meeting and the media will not be allowed in. Before going into the meeting today, Singh told us that IMEL is required to comply with all the conditions stipulated which they said that they have done. Singh said at this stage he does not know whether an Environmental Impact Asse ...
Environmental Impact Assessment is a powerful campaigning weapon if mastered and used well. A Judicial Review of decision if consent given.
It is with much sadness, and apologies, I have to tell you we have had to withdraw our application from the High Court for a Judicial Review. We had a very good case, which we probably would have won. This was based on the fact that during the consultation process Enfield Council failed to consult statutory consultees. The site is a Heritage site (indeed, both ponds are mentioned in the Domesday Book)and the council failed to consult both English Heritage and the Woodland Trust. They also failed to have an Environmental Impact Assessment done. However, our legal costs were spiralling out of control, potentially reaching £23,000. We had only managed to raise just over £7000 of the £8000 we originally budgeted for and I felt it would be impossible for us to raise the difference. Additionally, our barrister advised me that even if a High Court judge quashed the original decision all L&Q would do would be to resubmit their second application and make sure this time they ticked all the right boxes. To make ...

Funny showmanship by Political leaders when they wade into flood, being soaked by muddy water up to their mid thigh. What is more funny is that majority of us buy that and praise them for that irrelevant act. If they should carry their offices to the flood zones so that they wade through flood from time to time as they go about their duties like the inhabitants then I would take them serious but that is still irrelevant. Visiting flood disaster zones or any other disaster areas is important for EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment), so that better management of the disaster could be possible, and also to sympathize with victims, but walking into flood in the real sense of it has no real value only that it affect the sensibilities of the gullible and easily swayed sychophants. If they had walked into the flood to go and rescue someone or something that would be understandable, they just take photographs for very cheap political points and make promises which they fulfill partly to alleviating the plight of ...

BANKS face a sobering truth -- the clear response under the intoxicating regulatory environment is to accept and adapt. The regulatory fine print and national versions of the reforms may still be in various stages of finalization, but enough is now known and can be known to *** the aggregate impact, and to consider the effects of regulatory changes on banks’ business models and the interdependent implications with the broader economy. In our April 8 article ’The Current State of Financial Regulatory Reform, we discussed why banks need to take a strategic approach to understanding and managing the regulatory changes. We looked at Type 1 regulations that cover capital adequacy, liquidity and leverage, and that are designed to reduce the probability of bank failure. We talked about Type 2 regulations, notably on recovery and resolution planning (RRP) and over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives reforms designed to reduce the impact should a bank experience difficulties or fail. We also broadly explored the ...

"At these times, pep talk with yourself can come to your rescue to maintain the calm and handle whatever is thrown at you. Fifty questions for the Richmond School Board regarding school closures and re-zoning: 1. Best practice guidelines issued by the state of California regarding school closure decisions state that “The decision to close a school must be based upon hard, empirical evidence that leads to a broadly supported, incontrovertible conclusion-the district cannot afford to keep a particular school(s) open without cuts elsewhere (budget, staffing, etc.).” This is also common sense. How then can the board majority approve a rezoning and closure plan when by everyone’s admission, correct data on its demographic consequences have not been made available? 2. Put it another way, how can you vote for a plan without knowing all its consequences? 3. Why is Clark Springs, a school with test scores higher than the district average and with outstanding performance on the 2012 Math SOLs, targeted for closure? 4. How much money will be saved by closing Clark Springs? 5. How many of the board members voting for the proposals ...

Being only 30 km from Malaba this can serve as the last main stopover before goods transit in UG. The facility can be subsidized such that the excellent rooms to go for les then KES 500 plus a meal for truck drivers. 5/19 ARTICLE - Road Warrior: Time to Make Sense Whether You Like It or Not The Road Warrior takes a vitally important safety issue about seat belt usage and manages to make it into a senseless, head scratching, mistaken, fictional account. Road Warrior was unable to perform third grade math when he mistakenly guessed that 20% of drivers do NOT wear seat belts after reporting that 88% of driver do wear seat belts. He was unable to explain there is more than 1 seat belt law and the relevant distinctions & details for the 2 seat belt laws that affect front seat and back seat passengers differently. Many statements, which were not supported by his reported facts, made it seem like not using seat belts has relatively little impact if a person is more likely to be killed or injured. As a service to its readers, Record management should make the Road Warrior or someone offer a more accurate and complete report, and retraction of the incoherent, unsubstantiated, confusing column about this topic in order to help ...

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has observed with great concern that the overly and obsessive politicization of all national discourse which is fuelled by the media is too dangerous for the country’s fledgling democracy. He said obsessive politicization and nepotism have taken the centre stage of the nation’s multi-party democracy and even affected all state institutions which are supposed to be independent as prescribed under the 1992 Constitution. This, he said, was inimical to the cohesion and advancement of the nation. He said the country is so much polarized that what is good for one group of people is scandalously bad for another group and vice versa, depending on which side of the political divide one finds himself and that is tearing the fibre of the society apart. “We have allowed politics to dominate our lives and influence our thoughts that nothing else seems to matter to us but the good of the party we support,” he observed He said from appointment of heads of institutions to awa ...
A message from Superintendent Larry Francois May 7 was National Teacher Day. Northshore is fortunate to have outstanding professional educators, and it is fitting to recognize them on this day. Thank you to all who reached out to share your thanks and appreciation to our teachers! Expectations and accountability for educators have changed greatly over the past two decades as the focus has rightly shifted from the “inputs” of teaching to the “outputs” of student learning. Changes that we are in the midst of implementing include new national learning standards, assessments and accountability requirements and a new, more rigorous evaluation system which incorporates student growth over time, continuous improvement, ongoing training and professional collaboration. At a district level, we are continuing to implement an aggressive curriculum renewal plan, advance our district goals and performance measures and plan for grade reconfiguration. While all of these efforts are intended to improve the “outp ...

CSG investment 'folly' 16 Nov, 2012 03:00 AMMATTHEW CAWOOD AUSTRALIAN governments are committing a folly if they allow the expansion of natural gas extraction at the long-term expense of natural resources and food and fibre production, a new report says. Former CSIRO head scientist and NSW Natural Resources Commissioner, John Williams, has prepared arguably the first independent report on the controversial subject of gas extraction for the Australian Council of Environmental Deans and Directors. In it, he and colleagues, environmental engineer Tim Stubbs and science communicator Ann Milligan, note that gas has an important role to play in the national economy. Known gas reserves could provide the nation with energy for 184 years at current usage rates, and the full resource might be double that. But Dr Williams observes that maintaining the health of Australia's natural resources is also essential to long-term economic prosperity. "It would be folly to risk our essential natural resources and the ecosyste ...
PANAJI: Global warming, environmental degradation and the increasing dominance of invasive species are taking a heavy toll on the local plant biodiversity, although some experts argue that the same quantum of biota cannot be maintained forever. Global warming affects the process of pollination and may lead to the wiping away of existing species. "Heating can affect pollinators like insects, and if they become extinct or are endangered there won't be sufficient quantity of viable seeds for propagation," explained B F Rodrigues, professor, botany department, Goa University. The disruption of the germination process poses a serious threat to plant species as they face the potential of replacement by other species, especially the more hardy invasive ones. "The import of wheat brought with it two invasive species-Parthenium and Eupatorium-and these have the potential to eliminate existing species," said Rodrigues. It is believed that the two dominant species have suffocated local plants that once grew aplenty ...
INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE OFFERED FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTION RESEARCHERS have been studying traditional Indigenous knowledge of ecology and weather with the Mirriwoong people of the Ord Valley and Keep River, in order to better manage the effects of climate change. Fluvial geomorphologist Sonia Leonard says the study will help the Aboriginal people adapt to changing seasonal patterns, and also provide Indigenous rangers with baseline data for their environmental monitoring and management. “We looked at the world view of Indigenous people … their understanding of the environment and the world that they live in,” she says. “How does that shape their understanding of climate and weather and of their traditional knowledge systems and how can we use that to create adaptation tools?” A recently published paper gives the example of the beginning of the Mirriwoong wet season nyinggiyi-magenyknown as barrawoondang (time of strong wind, thunder, lightning and rain). Weather conditions are described as ngoomel ...

Mood Physical hazards are generally perceptible and discernible. Physical hazards, unlike many microbiological, biological and chemical hazards do not require laboratory analysis for their recognition or description. The hazards that can lead to drowning and injury may be natural or artificial. By definition a hazard is a set of circumstances that may lead to injury or death. The term “risk” is used to describe the probability that a given exposure to a hazard will lead to a certain (adverse) health outcome. In the context of this chapter, hazards are best viewed as both the potential causes of ill health and the absence of measures to prevent exposure or mitigate against more ...

Tyranny Abusing Power Whether it's a pushy person, a control freak, a bully, or an outright tyrant, the problem is the same: their goals are always more important than yours. A difficult, pushy person has gone too far again. They are bossing you around, acting selfish and self-important, threatening you, making demands, barking orders, and abusing their power. Control freaks, imperative people, and tyrants exercise power in a harsh, cruel, or destructive manner. They are oppressive, harsh, arbitrary people who make life difficult for too many of us. They are annoying, inconsiderate, and demeaning. What are they thinking? How can we respond constructively? Caution: Control-oriented people as described here expect to control the people and events around them. Exposing or challenging their tactics could provoke their anger and result in severe and possibly dangerous retaliation. Expect to be a target of their backlash. Protect yourself and others who could become targets before challenging a control-oriented ...

An Overview of Common Sense Management We want our organizations to succeed. Colleges and universities are in business to teach students, to conduct research, and to provide service to their constituencies. In order to prosper, we must acquire the support and resources our institution needs to fulfill its mission. We measure success by how well we accomplish our mission. What is Common Sense Management? Common sense management is an approach you can use to create a favorable future within which your institution can prosper. To create this favorable future, you must involve your stakeholders (i.e., anyone with a vested interest in achieving your institution’s mission) in envisioning the most desirable future and then in working together to make this vision a reality. The key to common sense management is to understand that people communicating and working together will create this future, not words written down on paper. Common sense management does not replace traditional management activities such as b ...
To spay or neuter: it's not really a discussion in the world of animal welfare. We all believe in it. The problem is the way it sounds to everyone else, which seems to be 'spay/neuter or be damned'.  There is a world of difference between being an advocate and being a fanatic.  There's no doubt there are health benefits to spaying your female dog or cat. As pets get older, each time they go into heat the health risks increase - of uterine infections, of cancers, of mammary tumours. Many of these are fatal if untreated and sometimes deadly even when treated. Those can be avoided in large part by spaying your female pet. With males the situation is less clear from a health perspective, the incidence of testicular cancers is pretty low. But behaviour can be affected by neutering your dog or cat - lower aggression, fewer conflicts between altered and unaltered dogs, less marking of territory, fewer cat fights. The contentious part of spay/neuter advocacy happens when those of us who know the situation in an ...

In the world of employees, a good boss is differentiated from a bad boss by the way the boss makes the employees feel. They also *** the boss based on his or her contribution – or lack thereof – to their ability to get their jobs done successfully. Employees tolerate a lot of bad boss behavior. Many bosses are untrained, uncaring, and not held accountable for their actions and interaction with employees. Some were promoted to jobs above their competence to perform. Bad management practices weigh heavily in whether your employees hate you. If any of these practices spell out your actions and behaviors as a manager, it is true. Your employees probably hate you. Oh, they may like you as a person and hate you as a boss, but that’s treading on a narrow line. If you bungle management long enough, or badly enough, they will hate you as a person, too. You Don’t Know What You’re Doing Are you competent at your job? This is the first consideration when your employees look at your work. Do you provide t .. ...
The Yorkshire Diamond / Various Architects The architect´s description: The project is an attraction in itself with a striking exterior in the form of inflatable tubes arranged in the atomic structure of diamonds. The 20 x 26 x 10 meter diamond grid volume is mined out to form a cavernous interior space reminiscent of the coal mines of Yorkshire. Light and air shafts pierce the structure providing natural light and ventilation. At night the translucent shafts and outer skin radiate light in all colors and directions like a diamond twinkling in the sunlight. A focus on flexibility gives the pavilion multiple configurations which allow it to be used for everything from small gatherings to large conferences or public presentations. The voluminous internal space will surprise and delight when installed in close quartered public squares. The pavilion can also be turned ‘inside out’ to open up a large covered area to open outdoor spaces to create the ultimate mobile venue for concerts or big-screen events. ...
How to Get College Freshmen Actively Involved in Church We have all heard the alarms. We have all seen the statistics. Students entering college are abandoning the church, leaving those of us in the church left to answer the key question, “What do we do?” While there is not one simple solution to such a complex issue, one thing is for sure. We must provide a better bridge for students at the pivotal transition from high school senior to college freshman that facilitates their activity in the local church. If your church has decided to build that bridge for college freshmen, take a look at these practical steps that can help you no matter your situation. 1. Resist a cookie-cutter approach. It is always good to glean from another’s success, but resist the temptation to copy someone else’s model when it doesn’t fit your context. You are unique and it pays to spend more time studying your particular situation rather than someone else’s. 2. *** your environment. With any project, you must begin ...

Managing a vendor relationship frequently requires skilled and careful leadership and a level of personal strength. There are unique aspects of leadership that apply to Vendor Management, and the overall development of these skills for the role can make a big difference to how effective the vendor manage will be. Vendor managers are usually expert in their own subject matter area. In some cases, they may have been trained in project management and business skills. But leadership is not an area where a vendor manager typically receives training or mentoring as preparation for that job. For many vendor managers, their work is mostly about managing the day to day stuff – handling difficult situations and people, keeping projects on track, ensuring that vendors meet standards and deliverables, fixing things that go wrong, working with internal clients and stakeholders, and helping teams buy into and work towards common goals and deadlines. For roles where stronger, more skilled leadership is needed to guide ...
Labour Party Submission to Westmeath County Development Plan (Draft) 2013 in respect of Wind Farm Development. Introduction The proposals for the development of wind farms across the Midlands (including County Westmeath) have grown out of proportion, going from small clusters of turbines in remote areas, and projections of a significant number of jobs and related investment, to possible developments which would see in excess of 2,500 turbines in place across the greater Midlands area. It is submitted, that apart altogether from the significant issues pertaining to location and closeness to where communities live and the impact this has upon people’s enjoyment of the peace and tranquillity of their home, without referring to the evidenced based reduction in value of their said holding, there are other significant negative impacts arising for the exposure of people in their homes to adverse health effects, and in particular the exposure to noise levels and shadow flickering. Submission We are supportive o ...

Case Study: Melcom Disaster; A six story commercial building collapse in Accra, Ghana in November 2012. Is been over six months since the Melcom building collapse and yet still we are still waiting on the government to explain the cause of the collapse and the way forward. Initially my view was to wait on the investigation been conducted by the government as to the cause of collapse especially as I wasn’t privy to the forensic data obtained from the site which will shed more light to the cause of the building collapse. However with the passing months, it has become apparent that after the initial hype, nothing will be done to address this issue. Since the Melcom disaster, we have experienced at least two more building failures and nothing has been done to address the issue. Thus from my bird’s eye view and general knowledge in geotechnical engineering and project management, I have attempted to at least shed more light on this recurring menace in Ghana. Probable Cause of Building Collapse Eye witness ...
External Challenge. Developments in the organization's environment that effect the organization's strategies are difficult to predict in the short run and sometimes impossible to estimate in the long run. Reconsider the example of small-city government. City planners seldom know about major factory relocations until shortly before construction begins. Other economic developments have a noticeable effect but are difficult to estimate. Examples include inflation, unemployment, and changing workforce patterns. For example. Nearly 45 million people, more than one-third of the American workforce, are either self-employed or working as temp, part-timers, or consultants, calculates Richard Belous, chief economist of the National Planning Association. This so-called contingent workforce has grown 57% since 1980, three times faster than the labor force as a whole. Social, Political, and legal challenges are easier to predict, but their implications are seldom clear. The impact on HR planning of the civil rights la ...

Top 10 Questions To Ask At A Job Interview Deciding on questions to ask the interviewer can be one of the most stressful parts of the interview process. Often candidates hurry through this part, relieved to have the interview over as quickly as possible. Others ‘go through the motions’ by asking unoriginal questions to fill the time. Asking intelligent and thoughtful questions reinforces your suitability as a candidate and demonstrates you are serious about the job. It also allows you to gain a better insight into whether the role is really for you. Here are our top ten questions to ask – although we recommend you don’t ask them all! Two or three questions leading to a real dialogue are best. Questions about the requirements of the role 1. What are the key priorities in the first few months of the job? The answer will give you clues to the real day to day challenges and any political / practical constraints. Of course, the panel might ask you what you think the priorities should be – so make ...
Chiisa Fuesaan-Sunaipa Twas a lovely afternoon within the luscious environment of an open field which were surrounded by various additions of healthy green leaves upon the strong, firm, and crisp brown surfaces of the trees they were attached to. The wonderful melody of birds singing beautifully rang through the vicinity to rid away the somewhat dulling yet strangely peaceful silence which flooded prior. Wildlife could be noticed here and there going about their business of nature while maintaining the various steeps and climbs of the circle of life.   Judging by the directional path of the pattern shaped combination of water molecules within mid air, the smooth invisible push of the wind would be headed north. Such gusts were caught within the natural net of the leaves upon the trees and other vegetation, causing them to sway as if performing a magnificent choreographed dance directed by mother nature herself. Even the sunlight glimmered off the blades of the grass as they were also ef ...

A POLITICAL ECONOMY APPROACH TO ISLAMIC ECONOMICS Introduction: The Essentialisation of Islamic Economics Beyond Islamic Finance Islamic finance, which emerged as part of Islamic economics thinking, has gained roots in the global financial system in recent years. In this novel and alternative financing method, Shari’ah compliance, as a mandatory aspect in terms of legal and mechanical terms, is essential and important. It is also important in a consequential manner that Islamic financing must fulfil the foundational principles and aspirations of Islamic economics. In this particular point, recent developments indicate that Islamic finance is moving in a ‘capitalist’ direction away from an Islamic economic value system. Therefore, the essentialisation of an Islamic economic system is necessary to *** whether Islamic finance is merely an alternative mode of capitalist production or a unique and egalitarian alternative economic order, which aims to be a ‘moral economy’, as coined by Tripp [2006]. . ...
We are very fortunate to have a resident FARMER on this page. One of our standing contributors is RUTH HENSON. She wrote for us this piece. Well worth the read. MAIZE POLICY : A FARMERS VIEW By Ruth Henson The ZNFU did a Maize study about 10 or 15 years ago. It showed that Zambia was the most expensive country in the region in which to grow maize. This was partly due to high transport costs for inputs and partly to low yields. The study also showed that if the price is completely left to the free market it will fluctuate between import parity (in deficit years) and export parity (in surplus years). At the time of the study, the effective export price at the farm gate was Zero as the world market price was equal to the transport cost. The effective import price was equal to double the world market price, again due to the high transport cost. The conclusion of the study was that Zambia should grow enough maize for consumption and a strategic reserve and very local export, not more. It is viable to export fr ...

Understanding the Batterer in Custody and Visitation Disputes By Lundy Bancroft © 1998 A sophisticated understanding of the mind of the abuser, his style as a parent, and of the tactics that he most commonly employs during separation and divorce, are essential to anyone making custody recommendations or working to design visitation plans that are safe for the children and their mother. Contrary to popular belief, children of batterers can be at just as much risk psychologically, sexually, and even physically after the couple splits up as they were when the family was still together. In fact, many children experience the most damaging victimization from the abuser at this point. A genuine batterer can be convincingly play the part of a man who has been unfairly accused, and batterers who will be a grave risk to their children during unsupervised visitation can be hard to separate from those who can visit safely. The insights and expertise of those service providers who have extensive experience working di ...
Should You Take a Job in a Developing Country? 4 Things to Consider Last week, my friend some broke big news. “I got a job offer in Burkina Faso working on women’s public health for the year,” she announced. “Should I do it?” Usually, I would say, “Of course you should go!” But in this case, I hesitated. My friend is well-traveled and a successful advocate in women’s leadership and political participation. She has a huge network of friends and family that she cherishes in the U.S., and she leads a very hip life. Not to mention, her career goals are in politics, not public health. I know she could make it anywhere, but this just seemed so out of character. It is a rare occasion when I would think twice about recommending travel to someone, but as a friend, I wanted to advise her fairly and honestly. I’ve had many colleagues take these types of development positions, and I’ve traveled in both the best parts and worst parts of the world myself. And while any opportunity abroad sounds adve ...
Despite its wide spread use and recent success in California, the impact of fracking on environmental health and public safety still leave many questions unanswered. After extensive research from other states as well as the feds, Senator Pavley co-chaired a legislative informational hearing last March with the sole intention of crafting comprehensive, yet reasonable set of rules that would regulate the practice of fracking. True to form, SB 4 provides a comprehensive statutory framework for fracking regulation. It also addresses the very issue that all legislators once in offices are sworn to protect: public safety. It is for this reason that I support SB 4 and I strongly urge my former colleagues to do the same.
Journal of Strategic Leadership, Vol. 3 Iss. 1, 2011, pp. 54-66 © 2011 School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship, Regent University ISSN 1941-4668 Building the Strong Organization: Exploring the Role of Organizational Design in Strengths-Based Leadership David Burkus How can leaders bring about greater gains toward productivity and organizational success? Strength-based leadership, an innovative leadership theory, suggests leaders can achieve this by focusing their efforts on building their own strengths and the strengths of individual followers. Despite research supporting the benefits of a strengths approach, many organizations have yet to employ this method of leadership, possibly because the organizational design inhibits it. This article outlines the history of the strengths movement and the research that supports a strengths approach. It then introduces the strengths-based leadership model conceived of and popularized by Tom Rath, Barry Conchie, and the late Donald Clifton. Next, it explores h ...

Top Five Skills in a Social Worker’s Professional Toolkit May 18, 2011 by Nadia Islam 20 Filed Under: Careers in Social Work, MSWBlog While many social work students arrive at graduate school with sophisticated levels of skill in observation, self-awareness, critical thinking, and verbal and written communication, the MSWprogram will provide you with daily opportunities to sharpen these tools – in your classes, study groups, and field placements. But how can you use them? Observation As a lifelong student of human behavior in the social environment, a social work practitioner begins as an applied social scientist. Despite many MSW graduates’ dark memories of their mandatory research course, social work practice often starts with a primary research method – observation. Recall your most recent psychosocial assessment. Before, during, and after you asked a single question, you used your senses to observe and record not only the client’s verbal responses but also his or her nonverbal communicati .. ...

Supervisors should use the script as a guide (not to be read verbatim) when advising the affected employee of the termination in person, the resulting debt and the waiver options to mitigate negative personal impact. The meeting should be conducted on a one-on-one basis between the supervisor and the employee in a pleasant environment. In addition, many employees will be concerned about the impact of this a . ...

Here's why i signed: The Goonellabah community is a mix of retirees, families with school aged children and a number of disadvantaged groups. Retirees are not all mobile and able to drive or catch the bus downtown to visit the shops, let alone the town library. If the library closes, that means these elderly people will have 2 choices: forget the library altogether or rely on someone to generously transport them downtown. Not good options. At a time when there is a decline in literacy and numeracy across schools closing a local library surrounded by school aged children is lost on me. The disadvantaged groups are generally in a low socio economic group. They do not have surplus funds to drive downtown to visit a library. They do not have funds to catch a bus to visit the library. They do have the physical energy to walk around the corner. So once again, council is making a decision based on their blinkered view of the demographic makeup. I leave council with a couple of things to answer if they are brave ...
Controversial US drilling company Cuadrilla has planning permission to drill & test frack, just outside the village of Balcombe in West Sussex and has now said it will start drilling in June (2013). Cuadrilla's bore at Balcombe is 100 yds from the main London to Brighton commuter railway line (a mile from where it runs over a Grade II Listed Viaduct) and is less than a mile from the village.  It is ½ a mile from the River Ouse and ¾ of a mile from Ardingly Reservoir (both of which are drawn on by SE Water for drinking water supplies).  There are endangered species (great crested newts and water voles) in our waterways.  It is 2 ½ miles from the Millennium Seed Bank - an irreplaceable, SUBTERRANEAN GLOBAL RESOURCE - this is a technology that is known to trigger seismic activity.  What could possibly go wrong? Cuadrilla has admitted that its inept practices triggered  earthquakes in Lancashire, where its activities are now suspended pending an Environmental Impact Assessment.  It did a test frack i ...

WE still question and will continue to investigate and question the lack of Environmental Impact Assessment on the land designated as the "Hellifield Tourism Development Opportunity Site" WHY NOT? Who is to blame? What is the impact of the caravan and trailer site, the lorry park, the house on the road to nowhere, the Hellifield Flashes, the wild life AND THE AMENITY of the residents of Hellifield? WHAT GAIN FOR THE VILLAGE? WHAT GAIN FOR THE LOCAL ECONOMY? We were told at the beginning of this campaign that we might as well just give up, decisions were made and it was unstoppable. That was 4 years ago, we are still here, still digging and still determined to achieve our objective of clear, fair and open management of the landscape in between Hellifield and Long Preston. If the law states that you may not remove a hedgerow without permission then that is the law, if the law states you must obtain permission to divert or culvert a watercourse, then that is the law. Eko Atlantic City... Web Of Intrigues, Mysteries Around A Prime Project *A City And Its Foggy Propositions* SOME fundamental legal issues regarding the construction of the Eko Atlantic City as well as the veil of secrecy surrounding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report have come to the fore, just as key players continue to advance contradictory positions regarding the project. The real story is unfolding on the heels of glaring inconsistencies in the positions being taken by the Lagos State Government/South Energyx Ltd, the proponents and executors of the project on one hand, and the representatives of the Federal Ministry of Environment, constitutionally empowered to ensure all projects comply with the EIA Act of 1992. Recent revelations by government officials about the new city being built on land reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean confirmed various reports by The Guardian since November 6 last year. One of the reports had stated categorically that the Eko Atlantic City project was being don ...

I'm not feeling well today. It is natural for a woman to crave love in her life. I am just impaired with the issue of unwanted psychic impressions. It would be cool to meet a guy who is kind and respectful towards women. It seems that my spiritual practice is not allowing me to pursue my love life in a normal way. It is most frustrating and I am afraid I must look like a terrible masochist at times devoid of self-respect. As a woman who is a bit of a feminist I would want a love in my life which is empowering. Unfortunately, my love life has been a source of disempowerment and dissappointment for many years. If I could go back to what I was like before my meditational practices it might be a little bit different. It would be nice to be using my head to make these decisions rather than this faulty intuition which leads me to constant pain and suffering. It is infuriating to get caught up on the people who would probably *** me the most harshly. It would be nice to be caught up on someone who returns my ...

Well here's my story... I am a survivor of 2 abusive relationships. Both started out the same. Caring gentleman type. The second relationship was the worse of the two. Between the two I wish none of this on any woman or man. I was physically , emotionally, mentally abused by them. The wearing if the bruises the fake made up stories we all know to well. I was told I was nothing called all kinds of names while being hit, pushed shoved ,choked and so forth. I'm not very good with talking or telling my story so I am sorry if its all over the place. I got used to the hits the painful part was looking at myself and hating myself. The anger. The first sorry the second the third and so forth. I do not want to get into detail. It is all a painful memory I am still working on . I remember the breaking point where I just had been thrown on to the ground by my hair and he was crouched over me screaming in my face and at that moment I felt numb but absorbing every bit of it. The numbness the anger the only word I can ...
CAN'T SLEEP Here are some interesting facts about Insomnia from NAMI Many people experience “problems sleeping.” This can include “not getting enough sleep,” “not feeling rested,” and “not getting good sleep.” This problem can lead to difficulties functioning during the daytime and have unpleasant effects on a person’s work-life, social-life, and family-life. Problems sleeping can be secondary to a medical illness (e.g., sleep apnea) or a psychiatric illness (e.g., depression). In addition to effecting sleep itself, many medical and psychiatric illnesses (including depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder) can be worsened by sleep-related problems. Therefore it is important to discuss sleep with one’s physicians and to make an effort to get an appropriate amount of restful sleep on a nightly basis. Lifestyle choices, such as aerobic exercise and eliminating the use of caffeine and alcohol, are important and often overlooked aspects of improving sleep patterns. What is insomnia? Insomni ...
