Nov 10, 1934: Emperor Hirohito leaves Tokyo to take personal command of annual grand maneuver of Japan’s Army
36 years ago today on 22 Oct 1978, then vice-premier Deng Xiaoping made an official visit to Japan, becoming the first Chinese state leader since the founding of the People's Republic to visit Japan. This took place about six years after the restoration of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. On this trip, Deng met with Emperor Hirohito and Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda. He also took a ride on the shinkansen. Marvelling at the speed of Japan's bullet train system, Deng remarked, "The shinkansen is faster than the wind, like it's pushing us to run. At this moment, we really need to run." Two months later, Deng took over the reins of power and became China's paramount leader, introducing "Reform and Opening Up" policies that would change China forever.
Where have such leaders gone? - In his memoirs, General Douglas MacArthur wrote about his first meeting with Emperor Hirohito after the end of the Second World War. " Shortly after my arrival in Tokyo, I was urged by members of my staff to summon the Emperor to my headquarters as a show of power. I brushed the suggestions aside. "To do so," I explained, "would be to outrage the feelings of the Japanese people and make a martyr of the Emperor in their eyes. No, I shall wait and in time the Emperor will voluntarily come to see me. In this case, the patience of the East rather than the haste of the West will best serve our purpose." The Emperor did indeed shortly request an interview. In cutaway, striped trousers, and top hat, riding in his Daimler with the imperial grand chamberlain facing him on the jump seat, Hirohito arrived at the embassy. I had, from the start of the occupation, directed that there should be no derogation in his treatment. Every honor due a sovereign was to be his. I met him cordiall . ...

Beginning in the 1930s, Japan loots much of Asia of gold, precious stones, art and cultural treasures. Government treasuries, banks, factories, homes and art galleries are emptied of their valuables. Gold fillings are hammered from the teeth of corpses. The looting is under the control of Emperor Hirohito's brother, Prince Chichibu and the operation is called Golden Lily. Japan's foremost gangster, Kodama Yoshio, is made a rear admiral and is Chichibu's man on the ground. For years, the stolen loot is transported to Japan where some is used to pay for Japan's imperial wars but most ends up in the hands of the Japanese ruling elite including members of the imperial family and various other gangsters. 69 years after the atomic bomb was dropped on Emperor Hirohito's legacy remains strong in Japan
HIROHITO'S GOLD Explosive Japanese WW11 Secrets Revealed By David Guyatt The history of the war in the Pacific is littered with tales of Japanese cruelty against British and American servicemen, amongst others. Not only did Imperial Japanese forces treat Allied POW's as slaves to build their railway in Burma, but also used them in horrific medical experiments at Mukden, Manchuria, the headquarters of the secretive Unit 731 - Japan's chemical and biological warfare weapons facility. Yet, even while all this was taking place, another more furtive Japanese force was engaged in work so secret that it has remained concealed, until now. Operating under the command of a Royal prince of the Imperial household, a highly secret unit was tasked with the methodical plunder of Southeast Asia. The project was called "Golden Lily" - named after a poem written by Emperor Hirohito. The unit plundered such profoundly large quantities of loot from China and Southeast Asia that, following the end of the war, the west det ...

JAPANESE WAR CRIMES OR ASIAN HOLOCAUST By Wikipedia Japanese war crimes occurred in many Asian countries during the period of Japanese imperialism, primarily during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. Some of the incidents have also been described as an Asian Holocaust and Japanese war atrocities. Some war crimes were committed by military personnel from the Empire of Japan in the late 19th century, although most took place during the first part of the Shōwa Era, the name given to the reign of Emperor Hirohito, until the military defeat of the Empire of Japan, in 1945. Historians and governments of some countries hold Japanese military forces, namely the Imperial Japanese Army, the Imperial Japanese Navy, and the Imperial Japanese family, especially Emperor Hirohito, responsible for killings and other crimes committed against millions of civilians and prisoners of war. Some Japanese soldiers have admitted to committing these crimes. Airmen of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service and Imperial ...

Desperately seeking Icons A nation's vision can be inferred from the leaders it constantly places on its pedestal. For the Americans, it is their Founding Fathers and the likes of Thomas Jefferson and Abe Lincoln. For the British, it is the Bard and a monarchy on whose empire the sun never set. For the Chinese it is probably still Chairman Mao while Emperor Hirohito works for Japan. A nation's oft reinforced icons, it appears, define the course of its destiny. Also, what a nation constantly projects ---whether right or wrong – deeply affects how others perceive it. An example might throw light on this. Abe Lincoln's sunken, bearded face has been imprinted in the pages of history and our memories as the image of the all time libertarian humanitarian who gave a new lease of life to an entire race of people. The USA was formed in late 1700s. The civil war leading to the abolition of slavery attributed to Abe Lincoln happened in the 1860s. Yet, almost a hundred years later, in 1955, a young woman named Rosa ...
From "American Minute" for September 2nd: Imperial Japan had one of the largest maritime empires in world history. In 1910, Imperial Japan annexed Korea, and in 1918 took control of Russian ports in Siberia. In 1937, Imperial Japan's Army killed over 200,000 in Nanking, China. In 1941, over 3,000 Americans died when Imperial Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. In 1942, over 20,000 Americans and Filipinos died on Bataan's Death March, where starving prisoners were marched 65 miles in heat and jungles to a disease infested camp. By 1945, over 100,000 died retaking Okinawa and Pacific islands. Democrat President Harry S Truman made the controversial decision August 6, 1945, to drop the Atomic Bomb. Though devastating, it was estimated to have prevented an additional one million casualties on both sides. On SEPTEMBER 2, 1945, Emperor Hirohito's Imperial forces officially surrendered aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. An interesting story occurred after the war ended. As you sit and enjoy your barbeques, your Memorial Day Sales and just your time off in general, please remember. Remember that without those who gave their lives at Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, The Battle of the Bulge, Midway, Kursk, Stalingrad, Normandy, the First and Second Battles of Changsha, and so many others, that there may not have been a Memorial Day. That another day would be celebrated. That day would have been the defeat of the Allied Forces in WWII. No war has meant so much to so many or has cost so many so much. The men and women who lost their lives in that war came from all walks of life, from all the races on the face of the Earth. They didn't all speak the same language, but they all had one goal. Defeat Adolph Hitler, defeat Benito Mussolini, defeat Emperor Hirohito. More than fifty million people died during World War II, the deadliest conflict in human history. Without these heroes, we would not be able to live the lives that we live today. It doesn't matter if you are Christian, Musli ...
80 years ago we had Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito. Now we have no Hitler, no Mussolini, and no Hirohito.
Movie Comment: "Emperor". With Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones. Shortly after the Atomic Bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, American occupiers decide on what to do with the Military and Civil Governments, and Emperor Hirohito. A important but grim reminder of the horrors of WWII, where over 10's of millions of people died world wide, often hundreds of thousands a day. Tokoyo, where politics, justice versus revenge, and personalities derermine the fate of Japan, and really the rest of the World. A miracle that, in spite of significant opposition by the "militarists", who were strongly opposed to surrender, and even moved against the god-emperor who pushed for post war peace, a truly terrible outcome was avoided. I love a good fictionalized history film, and, although receiving only tepid reviews, really enjoyed this account.
The film, EMPEROR, is an historical drama which examines General Douglas MacArthur's role in the American occupation of post WW II Japan. Tommy Lee Jones is superb in his portrail of MacArthur, from his physical manerisms, crusty and decisive management style, obsession with being photographed, to his famous corn cob pipe. As pre-condition to commencing the rebuilding of Japan, the good general and his staff must investigate and decide, in a narrow time frame, whether or not to deal with Emperor Hirohito as a war criminal. And, there is pressure from several sources to do just that. There are other sub plots beginning 10 years prior to the occupation in 1945 which are developed in the background of this interesting film, adding emotional themes to the American presence in Japan. MacArthur is shown as a man who does whatever he pleases, regardless of how his superiors view him. This film is well worth seeing. ***/4
THE POWER OF GRANDPA AS KING OF JAPAN STORY FOR YOU Consolidation of power The 16-year old emperor, traveling from Kyoto to Tokyo at the end of 1868 Despite the ouster of the bakufu, no effective central government had been put in place by the rebels. On 23 March, foreign envoys were first permitted to visit Kyoto and pay formal calls on the Emperor[31] On 7 April 1868, the Emperor was presented with the Charter Oath, a five-point statement of the nature of the new government, designed to win over those who had not yet committed themselves to the new regime. This document, which the Emperor then formally promulgated, abolished feudalism and proclaimed a modern democratic government for Japan. The Charter Oath would later be cited by Emperor Hirohito in the Humanity Declaration as support for the imposed changes in Japanese government following World War II.[32] In mid-May, he left the Imperial precincts in Kyoto for the first time since early childhood to take command of the forces pursuing the remnants o ...
Emperor Hirohito (1901-1989) Hirohito was Emperor of Japan from 1926 until his death in 1989. His role in Japan's government in the World War Two remains highly controversial. Hirohito was born in Tokyo on 29 April 1901, the eldest son of Crown Prince Yoshihito. His father became emperor when Hirohito was 11. In 1921, Hirohito went on a six-month tour of Europe, becoming the first member of the Japanese imperial family to travel abroad. He married an imperial princess, Nagako, in 1924 and they had seven children. Hirohito became emperor when his father died in 1926. The emperor was regarded as divine by many Japanese. In reality he had little power, with civilian and increasingly military officials deciding national policy. He reluctantly supported the invasion of Manchuria and the war against China, and attempted to encourage cooperation with Britain and the USA. However, he had no choice but to approve the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that led to war between Japan and the United States in December 19 ...

There may be an interesting movie coming out in March called Emperor with Tommy Lee Jones playing General Douglas MacArthur. It's about the true story of the decision the general had to make whether or not to arrest Emperor Hirohito after WW2 and try him for war crimes. Eventually he didn't, but if he had, that could have resulted in new problems for the US occupation forces and maybe even a new war. Anyway, it will be interesting if Jones can deliver the goods, because anyone trying to play MacArthur will have a formidable character to portray. If anyone has seen the movie Patton with George C. Scott, then you know what I'm talking about.

Many thanks to all who posted to wish me a happy birthday, both family and friends. I love and care for all of you. In the past 60 years I have seen a lot of things some bad and a lot of good. I thank God every day I have a great wife and son, great Mom and In-Laws, a brother who puts up with me and I care a great deal about him and his whole family. I've been thru 4 wars and actually got to participate in some of them, although I'm still mad I wasn't allowed to directly get involved with desert storm, Paul went instead of me. I got to meet several dignitaries throughout my career, Emperor Hirohito, Prince Charles, President Bush 1, and several senators and congressmen. I've performed before several hundred thousand people at numerous concerts thru the years and got to sing at the Texas state fair. A friend of mine has said Romney would be a warrior president because he said the would put the leaders of Iraq on notice. I've been thinking about her position, and I understand where she's coming from. Can you imagine how many American soldiers' lives would have been spared if that warrior president, FDR, had immediately surrendered to the Empire of Japan in December, 1941 and turned the U.S. over to Emperor Hirohito instead of embroiling us in a costly world war. It staggers the mind.
The ability to "shoot zingers" and earn stylistic points doesn't make a person capable of leading a nation. Amongst the world's most articulate leaders: Emperor Hirohito, Josef Stalin, Idi Amin, Adolph Hitler, Machiavelli. Listen beyond how the words are said and search for meaning in the rhetoric.
Eighty one years ago today, Japanese leadership, up to and including the sacred Emperor Hirohito [whom MacArthur shielded from punishment] began a planned, and illegal, war of aggression against China that lasted 14 years and included scientific experiments upon Chinese [and other ethnicities] that were captured plus enormous loss of life. Few alive here remember it, but 'legacy' memory preserves the rawness of feeling about Japanese aggression and atrocities. [So the timing of stirring the Diaoyu Island pot is senseless miscalculation on the Japanese part] One mayn't countenance violence, but one may understand that it doesn't come from nowhere and that actions have consequences far beyond the lives of the perpetrators and victims. Ask the USA about the consequences of slavery and racial injustice and how that plays out [hint, think 47%, some of whom look to the Federal government to protect them from racism, but that's another day's discussion]. The violence isn't without some interesting bounces. Loot ...

As for the morality of the act, what determines it is the cause in which it is employed and whom it is employed against. A suicide bombing against Israeli civilians on a tour bus in Bulgaria (which occurred on the same day last week as the attack in Damascus) is unquestionably evil. As is the kamikaze pilot who crashes his plane into an American warship on behalf of the Emperor Hirohito and Japanese imperialism. A suicide bomb detonated amidst Bashar Assad’s coven of mass-murderers is an act of heroic sacrifice.

Green Day is the opening act of Golden Week. This holiday was originally celebrated in honor of Em-peror Hirohito's birthday. Emperor Hirohito was born April 29, 1901. After his death he was given his posthumous name of Emperor Showa, as is the custom in Japan. The new imperial name means the era of enlightened peace. The emperor died on January 7, 1989 but the Japanese chose to continue to celebrate the day, calling it the Day of Green in reference to Emperor Hirohito's interest in plants and the environment. He was an expert biologist and was the author of 14 books about biology.
