Emmy Awards

An Emmy Award, often referred to simply as an Emmy, is a television production award, similar in nature to the Peabody Awards but more focused on entertainment, and is considered the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film), the Tony Award (for theatre), and the Grammy Awards (for music).

What You Learn in Your 40s IF all goes according to plan, I’ll turn 44 soon after this column appears. So far in my adult life, I’ve never managed to grasp a decade’s main point until long after it was over. It turns out that I wasn’t supposed to spend my 20s frantically looking for a husband; I should have been building my career and enjoying my last gasp of freedom. I then spent my 30s ruminating on grievances accumulated in my 20s. This time around, I’d like to save time by figuring out the decade while I’m still in it. Entering middle age in Paris — the world’s epicenter of existentialism — isn’t terribly helpful. With their signature blend of subtlety and pessimism, the French carve up midlife into the “crisis of the 40s,” the “crisis of the 50s” and the “noonday demon” (described by one French writer as “when a man in his 50s falls in love with the babysitter”). The modern 40s are so busy it’s hard to *** them. Researchers describe the new “rush hour of lif .. ...

Battle of Athens (1946) The Battle of Athens (sometimes called the McMinn County War) was a rebellion led by citizens in Athens and Etowah, Tennessee, United States, against the local government in August 1946. The citizens, including some World War II veterans, accused the local officials of political corruption and voter intimidation. The event is sometimes cited by firearms ownership advocates as an example of the value of the Second Amendment in combating tyranny.[1][2][3][4] Citizens of McMinn County had long been concerned about political corruption and possible election fraud.[5] The U.S. Department of Justice had investigated allegations of electoral fraud in 1940, 1942, and 1944, but had not taken action.[5][6] In 1936 the system descended upon McMinn County in the person of one Paul Cantrell, the Democratic candidate for sheriff. Cantrell, who came from a family of money and influence in nearby Etowah, tied his campaign closely to the popularity of the Roosevelt administration and rode FDR’s c ...

HOW GREAT IS THE DARKNESS – PART TWO TODAY’S SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE – "If thine eye is evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is within you is darkness, how great is that darkness?" (Matthew 6:23) If our spirit (heart) is yet in the camp of fallen man (the fallen nature we were born with), to what degree are we darkened? To the alternative, if our spirits (hearts) are in the light (re-born light), how great is that light! Some will be 30-fold fruit bearers, some 60, and some 100. (See Matthew 13:23) Is darkness classified as 30, 60, or 100 shades of evil? I’m hoping this twenty-five year old, frayed Bible of mine will carry through to the end. It’s been awesome so far, but the pages and binding are showing wear, just as its owner. There’s potentially a great message here this morning if Jerry doesn’t get in the way. (That does happen, you know?) We have the Emmy Awards, and the Golden Globes, and the Academy Awards, for excellence in performance. But th ...
Michael Douglas took aim at the U.S. prison system backstage at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night following his somewhat cryptic comment while on stage accepting the award. Douglas won Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his role in HBO’s Liberace bio-pic Behind the Candelabra. While his speech was jovial and included a humorous exchange with Candelabra co-star Matt Damon, the actor gave a shout out at the end of his speech to his oldest son Cameron, noting that he’s “hoping that … they’ll allow me to see him soon.” Backstage, Douglas elaborated: “My son is in federal prison. He’s been a drug addict for a large part of his life. Part of the punishments — if you happen to have a slip, and this is for a prisoner who is nonviolent, as about a half-million of our drug-addicted prisoners are — he’s spent almost two years in solitary confinement. Right now I’ve been told that I can’t see him for two years. It’s been over a year now. And I’m questioning the system.”

He added the title “doctor” before Seuss (his mother’s maiden name) while in college to lend credibility to his writings and characters, and in reaction to his father’s wish that his son would get a doctorate. -He won several major awards, including: two Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards, the Pulitzer Price, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award and a Peabody Award. -He wrote Green Eggs and Ham on a dare. Ted Geisel’s publisher bet that Geisel couldn’t write a book using only 50 different words. In an effort to make learning to read more exciting for kids, he wrote a silly tale about a picky ...

Factoid: In the 2013 Emmy Awards, Kerry Washington is the first African American woman to be nominated in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in nearly 20 years. The last was Cicely Tyson for her role in Sweet Justice in 1995. Tyson was a leading lady for the major awards show, she won both for lead actress in a Drama Series and actress of the year in 1974 for The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Both a nominee and major presenter in this year’s Awards, Washington was accompanied by groundbreaking actress Diahann Carroll. Carroll was the star of “Julia” which was the first network comedy featuring a black person in non-stereotypical role in 1968. The first black person to win an Emmy Award was Harry Belafonte. The Red Carpet Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 1 Corinthians 9:25 Ever get tired of the awards shows celebrating actors and musicians? There are the Emmy Awards, the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the People's Choice Awards, the Tonys, the Grammys, the MTV Music Awards, and lots more. An entire industry is built around these annual "Red Carpet" events, as everyone listens to see if their favorite stars are chosen. Meanwhile, our true heroes are often forgotten -- soldiers, schoolteachers, firefighters, missionaries, and those laboring long and hard for souls. One day an Awards Ceremony will occur in heaven, where the true rewards will be distributed. The Bible says, "Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done" (2 Corinthians 5:9-10). The reward ceremony in heaven wil ...

Today's Phil: Comedian, Actor. He is best remembered for his classic role of ‘Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko’, in the television series, "You'll Never Get Rich," later changed to "The Phil Silvers Show" (1954 to 1959). Born Philip Silversmith in New York City, he started in show business as a child actor in vaudeville, and by 1934, he was working in Minsky's Burlesque, where he trained in comic routines and perfected his timing. Eventually, he was brought to Hollywood, and in a classic Phil Silvers comedy routine, he relates that they didn't know what to do with him, so the Hollywood moguls have him test for a role of vicar in "Pride and Prejudice". Despite roles in such movies as "You're in the Army Now," (1941) with Jimmy Durante, "Tom, *** and Harry" (1941), and "Four Jills in a Jeep" (1944), he was slow to capture audience interest. He eventually gained some success with the Broadway production of "Top Banana" (1951), where he played ‘Jerry Biffle’, a burlesque comic who becomes a television ...

Eyes on the Prize; Produced by Blackside, Eyes on the Prize tells the definitive story of the civil rights era from the point of view of the ordinary men and women whose extraordinary actions launched a movement that changed the fabric of American life, and embodied a struggle whose reverberations continue to be felt today. Winner of numerous Emmy Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award, an International Documentary Award, and a Television Critics Association Award, Eyes on the Prize is the most critically acclaimed documentary on civil rights in America. Eyes on the Prize recounts the fight to end decades of discrimination and segregation. It is the story of the people -- young and old, male and female, northern and southern -- who, compelled by a meeting of conscience and circumstance, worked to eradicate a world where whites and blacks could not go to the same school, ride the same bus, vote in the same election, or participate equally in society. Psycho Jello said it all! Davy Jones is the best teen idol of all time. Sure, Ricky Nelson, Frank Sinatra and Elvis predated Davy, and yeah, maybe Leif Garrett and David Cassidy had better hair, and Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake had more solo success, but Davy is still the best. Davy Jones represented all that’s great about teen idols. Physically, Davy was all you could ever ask for in a fave rave. Small in stature as to not scare away the young girls, with the prerequisite Beatle haircut (or Prince Valiant do, depending on the year), a youthful face, big doe eyes, and a toothy grin. But he had something that other teen idols of the time didn’t have: a cheeky mischievous sparkle behind those eyes and a rebellious spirit. Before the Monkees, Davy had performed on Broadway in Oliver! and was nominated for a Tony Award. Gloria Stavers from 16 Magazine started hearing about him and featured him in her magazine years before the Monkees began. Executives from Colpix Records (soon to be Colgems) also ...

2011's TVVola TV COUNTDOWN Breaking Bad - AMC This show has been fantastic from season 1. Bryan Cranston, who plays Walter White, has won 3 straight Emmy Awards and Aaron Paul has also won an Emmy. The show centers around a high school chem teacher, Walter White, who is diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. Walter meets up with a former student, Jesse Pinkman. He later meets with Jesse and partners with him in an attempt to make big money making crystal meth. Things go haywire and the story continues. An over the top performances by Giancarlo Esposito, who played Gus, and Mark Margolis, who played Hector, made this a special season. If there is one show you committ to catching up on, it should be Breaking Bad. Catch up on Netflix streaming, it's well worth the 8 bucks a month. That's my show of 2011. Breaking Bad will not be up for a golden globe for best tv drama this year, like it would have been. Due to the stupidity of AMC, they moved it back and it missed the eligibility date. In between Broadway shows and television she managed to star in such films as "Klute", " Cold Turkey", "Michael" and " You've Got Mail". Just finished watching an early morning Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of "It's Christmas, Carol", a modern remake of Dickens' story of Scrooge. Great redemptive story set in the context of Chicago's publishing world with beautiful French-Canadian Emmanuelle Vaugier as the bitter, miserly, driven "Scrooge" character, encountering the ghost of her former benevolent boss who drags her through images of the past, present and future. The result, naturally is a "conversion" that brings reconciliation to her work purposes, to colleagues and employees, to her mother, and to her former rejected lover. Wonderful, uplifting TV movie. But even more meaningful is the fact that my dear friend Brad Moore produced this as the long-term president of Hallmark Hall of Fame Productions, and has shared with my classes at NTS (where he served as Chairman of our Board) his passion and philosophy of using the media for ennobling purposes. Under his leadership he has received 31 Emmy Awards, 5 of these for best film ...

Peter O’toole In a small village in the county of Galway in Ireland a boy was born on August 2, 1932. He went on to London to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) to qualify as an actor in the theatre and made a name for himself as a Shakespearean actor. He took his bow in films in 1949 and in 1962 hit the ceiling with the mammoth film “Lawrence of Arabia” and for this he received his first nomination for the Best Actor for Oscar of that year. But he did not win it. This was just the first of the many times he did this. He has the dubious record of sorts for having won maximum number of nominations for the Best Actor award, but never once did he win it. Well, the Oscar did not deserve Peter O’toole. But of course, in his bag of achievements he had four Golden Globe Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Emmy Awards for his grand portrayal of many characters in many films. Like most Irish men Peter loved the good things in life and he also lived a very un-conventional life style. Last week he went to be w ...

Kathy Griffin won an Emmy in 2007 and made the remarks shown below. I remember this vividly because at the time I swore I would never watch anything with this vulgar human being in it ever again. I believe her show was on A&E?? I'm not saying I agree with what Phil Robertson said, but this seems very hypocritic to me. At the end of this it says the award show was taped -- they could have not shown her entire speech, but they chose to show an abbreviated version in which some language "may" be bleeped. Pathetic. Before Kathy Griffin won a creative arts Emmy last weekend for her reality show, "My Life on the D-List," she joked that an award would move her to the C-list. She was right: "C" as in censored. The TV academy said her raucous acceptance speech will be edited when the event, which was taped, is shown Saturday on the E! channel. The main prime-time Emmy Awards air the next night on Fox. "Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast on Saturday night," the Academy of Telev .. ...

Jew-owned Emmys Are Full Of Sex and They Show What American Pop Culture Has Deteriorated Into. Most Americans eagerly tuned into the 65th annual Emmy Awards show the other night. The awards show represents American pop culture in a lot of ways. This is unfortunate, since the show was full of vulgar sex references. Neil Patrick Harris was the host of the Emmys this year. He opened the show with some TV sequences on a large screen. Among the scenes that were shown was a sex scenes featuring *** from Behind the Candlelabra. Of course, such scenes will always show up in American television. But the fact that this particular scene was shown in the opening sequences, which is supposed to represent the most prominent and popular shows, is unsettling. After the opening sequences, a speech was interrupted with another act of sex appeal. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler came on stage in them middle of a speech and demanded that Harris take off his pants. They told him to “twerk” it like Miley Cyrus. Tina Fey was w ...

Tina Fey and Miley Cyrus both had nip slip wardrobe malfunctions over the weekend. For Tina Fey the only thing more embarrassing than having her nipple slip out during the Emmy Awards is having her name mentioned in the same breath as Miley Cyrus.
I tuned into the 2013 Emmy Awards just to watch the tributes to some of my favorite actors and actresses . Jonathan Winters, one the all time great comedians was honored by Robin Williams. I thought Williams could have done a much better presentation of the great Jonathan Winters. James Gandolfini received a beautiful.tearful honor from Edie Falco. And I thought the best presentation of the show was from Rob Reiner who chocked up while honoring the great Jean Stapleton, better know as Edith Bunker. I agree with Adam Klugman that his father Jack Klugman deserved to be honored at the Emmy's. He was a great actor and I loved him in " The Odd Couple." I guess it's a sign of age, but I'm not a fan of any of the shows that received Emmy Awards. I always tune into TVLand channel to watch my favorite reruns of Rosanne, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Cosby. I'll always tune into my other favorites whenever their on, The Honeymooners, and the Odd Couple. The good old days.
Yesterday I watched the penultimate episode of which won Outstanding Drama Series at this year's Emmy Awards.

Sarah Silverman looks like she is going to a funeral not the Emmy Awards.
Emmy Awards show producers decide to eulogize and honor junkie Corey Monteith of "Glee," who died of drug and alcohol overdoses, in its obit segment. Meanwhile, they virtually ignored Jack Klugman, a TV pioneer, 10-time Emmy nominee, 3-time Emmy winner, a revered actor who bounced back from throat cancer to continue a seven-decade acting career. That says a lot about our current cultural values.

Ok the Emmy Awards were a joke. How do you leave out two of the biggest TV stars Larry Hagman and Jack Klugman actors who have won numerous Emmy Awards from your memorial tribute yet they give special honor to someone virtually no one has ever heard of whos only acting credit is one single tv show never won an Emmy and died do to his own behavior.

I have to get this out of the way so I can relax. One of the programs that I did see last night was the Emmy Awards telecast. As for the awards themselves, I was happy about the wins in the dramatic program categories, particularly those in the acting, writing, and directing categories. These wins made me happy because I really enjoyed the particular episodes and the performances honored last night. I also liked the wins in the made for TV movie/miniseries categories. As for the ceremony itself, my favorite parts were the opening skit featuring the present and past Emmy hosts, some of the acceptance speeches, and the standing ovation for and acknowledgement of Bob Newhart. My congratulations to all of the winners.

Well, the Emmy Awards were something last night, no doubt about it. There were lots of good moments, but quite a couple of bad ones. Neil Patrick Harris was in top form, with his opening monologue and his middle-of-the-show performance number. One of the pre-taped skits, featuring his fellow "How I Met Your Mother" costars urging him to seek help for his "addiction" to hosting, was hilarious, but the opening skit, featuring Harris binge-watching every TV program imaginable, wasn't as good as Jane Lynch's opening skit when he hosted in 2011 when she walked through the worlds of all the TV shows and interacted with its characters. The Elton John and Carrie Underwood tributes to Liberace and the Beatles were pretty good, and Don Cheadle's tribute to the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination and its television coverage was quite touching. But why did Neil Patrick Harris put Nathan Fillion and Sarah Silverman in his middle-show number? They seemed out of place. And the winners? Wow, a LOT of upse ...
Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn didn’t surprise me or many others last night when they took the Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program at the 2013 Emmy Awards. Who could disagree? Congratulations to House of Cards director David Fincher for his Best Directing win at last night’s Emmy Awards! Want to see what all the fuss is about? The first six episodes of House of Cards are at Redbox:
Despite promises by Simon Cowell that this series would be bigger and better than before, the latest season of the X-Factor was as flat as some of its contestants when it was broadcast on Thursday night. Viewing figures fell to 6.1 million for the latest series, a 38 percent drop from last year despite being just a few episodes in. “The Voice” season 5 premieres tonight on NBC. Ken Jeong will star in and produce a medical comedy for NBC. “Dr. Ken” will draw from Jeong's life as a licensed physician before he entered show business full-time in 2007. There was controversy before last night’s Emmy Awards. The late Jack Klugman’S son, Adam, said he thought it was criminal that his father was passed over for an in memoriam tribute in favor of Cory Monteith. Klugman said, "My dad was at the inception of television and helped build it in the early days. It's an insult and it really seems typical of this youth-centric culture that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very na ...
EXTREME SWAGGER NEWS: 65th Emmy Awards Highlights: Twerking, 'Two-Handed' Thanks And A Big 'Breaking Bad' Win One of Sunday night's highlights was an emotional tribute to late 'Glee' star Cory Monteith. By Kaufman We get it Emmys, we binge watch, we check out "Breaking Bad" on every screen except the old-school one: our phones, computers and ... contact lenses? Okay, maybe 65th annual Emmy Awards host Neil Patrick Harris was exaggerating a bit during his opening monologue. But you can be sure that all those "Bad" fans were multi-screening it on Sunday night (September 22), because with the exception of long-suffering wife Skyler White (Anna Gun) early on, the stars of the nearly wrapped show went home empty handed. (Spoiler alert: "Bad" won Best Drama Series to cap the night.) The Emmy's are good. is such a funny and exciting host! Was that the Emmy Awards or TV Memorial/Funeral Affair? What were they thinking? And the memorials they did were so unaffecting. A clip or two would have been better. What does the Academy have against "Mad Men" actors? Not one Emmy - ever! Iconic performances by Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, Elisabeth Moss, John Slattery, Jared Harris, Robert Morse, etc. Jeff Daniels, really? There is no chemistry on that show. Great work unrecognized. And how about "Top of the Lake", "The Americans", "The Bridge", "Girls"??? Gr.

"Nurse Jackie" star Merritt Wever gave the greatest acceptance speech of all time at the Emmy Awards on Sunday. "Thank you so much.
Monday morning. Have a vacation day today. Had relaxing and quiet weekend. Had fun time flinging more early family member graves. Always disappointing when some have no stones. Did have some great discoveries I was not expecting. Worked on getting pictures of stones on Illinois Tombstone Project. Fixed roast, homemade green beans, Mac and cheese, cole slaw, and baked an apple pie. Jim and I watched Emmy Awards. Happy about Jeff Daniels from Newsroom, Merritt Wever from Nurse Jackie, Derek Hough from Dancing With the Stars, who is one of the best choreographers out there. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and of course Modern Family. You have to say that tv has come a long way, both excellent and bad. I am a child of radio days when we all sat in the living room and listened to people like Bing Crosby, Fiber Magee and Molly, Uncle Milty, Jack Benny, etc. Jim and I watched DVD Aviator. Wonderful special effects of flying scenes and the talented actors. More fun things to do today including a nice walk in the park. Ha .. ...

The only dress that I remotely liked out of the whole Emmy Awards gala was the Versace Atelier (Haute Couture) that Heidi Klum wore, but I think it was unflattering for her. The rest was just tacky and tasteless... As Anna dello Russo would say: we need a fashion shower.

Slow Your Roll Watched the Emmy Awards tonight. Here is my review. Great show. Best since Conan's 'caging' of Newheart one. (Yes, TV is my life, sad.) I noticed Mr. Cumberbatch didn't show. Maybe that he's finally getting his due he felt he could FU them (or maybe he's working.) Still, a bit of a shame as he has the best "I know I'm not going to win it but I can still look Fing cool" look. The cold opening (not quite correct term I think) was great, although I missed about the first minute. The first bit was awesome. Duh. I don't get cable so I haven't seen Conan since he shaved his beard. A bit worse for wear. Mr. Harris was/is funny, a talent, purrrfect. blah! The transition into first award was perfect. How could it not be with (female version of Messrs which sadly probably does not even exist) Tina and Amy (who, I might add single hand-in-handedly saved SnL.) taking it just a bit over (or should I say 'off') the top. A year or two ago I watched a season or two of Nurse Jackie*. *** fine show. Hard to ...

Sunday night's 2013 Emmy Awards brought tons of looks that we loved, but we're not sure if Lena Dunham's dress was one of them. Dunham wore a floral Prada gown in a bright teal color.
