An Emmy Award, often referred to simply as an Emmy, is a television production award, similar in nature to the Peabody Awards but more focused on entertainment, and is considered the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film), the Tony Award (for theatre), and the Grammy Awards (for music). Today in Black History: 1960 Kevin Clash was born. He is a puppeteer. In 1979, he began working for national television shows like "The Great Space Coaster" and "Captain Kangaroo." In 1985 he joined "Sesame Street" full-time At that time, the Elmo character existed, but his character did not emerge until Clash was given the task to develop it. Clash came up with Elmo's distinctive falsetto voice and laugh, turning the puppet into one of the show's most popular characters. It also netted Clash an Emmy Award. Clash also contributed his voice to the "Tickle Me Elmo" doll, a marketing sensation in 1996. Clash also was executive producer for the film "Elmopalooza," (1998) co-producer for "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland" (1999) and co-executive producer for "CinderElmo" (1999) and "Elmo's World." James Maury "Jim" Henson (Sep 24, 1936 – May 16, 1990) American puppeteer, best known as the creator of The Muppets. As a puppeteer, Henson performed in various television programs, such as Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, films such as The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper, and created advanced puppets for projects like Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth. He was also an Oscar-nominated film director, Emmy Award-winning television producer, and the founder of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop. He died on May 16, 1990 of organ failure resulting from a Group A streptococcal infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. Henson, who was born in Greenville, Mississippi and educated at University of Maryland, College Park, is one of the most widely known puppeteers ever.
