Agnes Martin, Abstract Painter, Dies at 92 By HOLLAND COTTER Published: December 17, 2004 Agnes Martin, an American painter whose luminous fields of pale color traversed by hand-drawn pencil lines preserved the Romantic spirit of Abstract Expressionism and prefigured the austerities of Minimalism, died yesterday in a retirement community in Taos, N.M. She was 92 and had lived in New Mexico for many years. Her death was announced by the chairman of the PaceWildenstein gallery, Arne Glimcher, her friend and longtime dealer. In New York in the 1950's and 60's, Ms. Martin was an integral part of a small, brilliant, diverse community of artists - Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly and Robert Rauschenberg among them - who lived in derelict 19th-century shipping lofts in Lower Manhattan and created a new postwar American art. Yet Ms. Martin was fundamentally a loner. In 1967, when her New York career was taking off, she abruptly left the city, wandered the country for months in a pickup and camper, and stopped making ...

Born this day in 1900, Betty Parsons. Once referred to as "the den mother of Abstract Expressionism," she was an early advocate of the great Abstract Expressionists, including *** Rothko, Reinhardt, Still and Newman, long before they all achieved notoriety. Her midtown gallery, which opened in 1946 (and closed every summer so that Parsons could focus on her own art), gave the Abstract Expresionist artists their first large-scale exposure, making it one of the most prestigious art galleries in New York. In its later years, the Parsons Gallery did much to promote the works of many *** *** and bisexual artists, including Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg.

HOROWITZ 09 March – 30 April 2011Art, History 4 New Burlington Place London W1Jonathan Horowitz‟s latest exhibition with Sadie Coles HQ, Art, History, comprises a major new body of work which responds to the minimalist works on permanent display at the Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington DC. Combining sculpture, installation and video, Horowitz mounts a subtle critique of the use of minimalist aesthetics as a means of memorialising the Holocaust, while exploring wider concepts of collective memory and the malleability of visual signs and symbols.Horowitz has criticised the austere abstraction of the Holocaust Museum works as impotent in their singular context: “in the face of one of the worst things that‟s ever happened, art is represented as having nothing to say.” His new works paraphrase the museum‟s four major exhibits (by Ellsworth Kelly, Joel Shapiro, Sol LeWitt and Richard Serra), and yet inject the pure aesthetics of minimalism with specific symbolic connotations.
