TRIVIA ABOUT SOME OF THE WORLD'S MOST POPULAR LANDMARKS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY was once a lighthouse. Lady Liberty was a gift from France, intended to serve as a reminder of freedom. Then-president Grover Cleveland, however, thought the statue would best be used as a light source. After several failed attempts to get the electrical wiring working, the structure was finally ready to be used as a lighthouse. The structure lit the way for 16 years, but was later deemed an unfit way to treat the symbol and its lighthouse days ended on March 1, 1902. LONDON'S Clock Tower isn’t really named Big Ben. Just about everyone in the world refers to the pivotal Clock Tower, which defines the city of London, as Big Ben. But we’re all dead wrong. The little known truth is the tower isn’t actually named Big Ben. That’s the name of the bell inside of it but the tower itself is named Elizabeth Tower, after Queen Elizabeth II. We wonder if the Queen is offended that no one calls it by its real name. THE GREAT WALL OF ...

A Right Royal Summer to Remember By Thomas J. M. Mace Archer DeLacroix Mills Chairman, British Monarchist Society Essay Three in the Series 2012 ended as 2013 began, with one of the largest and most impressive fireworks displays the United Kingdom has seen in decades. As Big Ben struck 12 midnight, fireworks from the Elizabeth Tower heralded the phenomenal pyrotechnics spectacle from the London Eye as well as from barges on the Thames. Music added a unique and celebratory flare to the evening where people were dancing and singing as the dazzling fireworks display lit up the sky in every shade of colour imaginable. Listening to the patriotic segment of the New Year show and watching such a beautiful airborne panorama, the greatness of Britain was reflected in the ripples of the Thames. Fireworks by the thousands lit up the British sky this past summer, from the Jubilee, to the Beating Retreat, to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The symbolism of this cold December New Years Eve, where again we congr ...

The Ghosts of York by Jillian Schedneck Named the most haunted city in the world by the Ghost Research Foundation International (GRFI), York's frightening past can be an entertaining and humorous way to learn its history -- or a good way to wake up in the middle of the night, wondering if your hotel room has also had a haunting or two. For every room, building or street seems to be haunted in this bustling, beautiful city. And it isn't hard to find a ghost tale or two, or 140, which is the number of ghosts in York, or even 504, the number of recorded hauntings. In this town, ghost hunting can be for amusement, as well as serious business. The purpose of GRFI is to investigate possible ghostly phenomenon throughout the world. Jason Karl, president of the organization, has traveled extensively, working on research projects across the globe. He said York has more ghosts than any other city. To residents of York, this comes as no surprise. York has around four million visitors a year, and there are plenty of ...

I walked into my gym this afternoon and saw someone painting a mural. Only the silhouettes were finished. "What are you painting?" I asked. "London Bridge, Big Ben, and Westminster Cathedral," he replied. "What did you think they were?" "Tower Bridge, Elizabeth Tower and Westminster Abby," I said. "Wrong," he said. "I guess you don't know London." "I guess not." I hadn't the heart to tell him not one of them was actually in the City of London.
I know this might sound a bit conceited, but I actually find it really flattering when people think I'm possessed by Satan or Demons. Cuz basically they are saying that I'm so good at what I do that the only possible explanation for it is that I'm supernatural.

Some clowns, saying that they are closest relatives of Richard III, are arguing about his burial place. Who the *** are they? The king's only legitimate child died in his lifetime, his only living male-line nephew earl of Warwick was executed in Tower in 1499... Richard III himself appointed his nephew John de La Pole as his heir, but he was executed in 1487 and left no issue... And princess Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Edward IV, the eldest brother of Richard III, married Henry VII and all subsequent kings and queens were their descendants, which makes Elizabeth II his great-great-...-great niece. As competition with the Queen is illegal, she is the main person to decide and no other descendants of Richard III's brothers or sisters have right to open their mouth!
The stone is current set into Queen Elizabeth's crown and is on display in the Tower.

My mother was a schoolteacher who read me millions of books. I have so many favorites, but it's not difficult to choose the one that stands out as my very favorite. I still have all of those books and plan to pass them down to my children as they have their children. My youngest, Charlie, who is 10, told me that his favorite book is my favorite book. It's not very well known but I'd like to share it because it is really, really special and I'm so proud that my kids have chosen it, too. I also think it's very relevant to the world today. Devorah and I were watching the movie "The Queen" last night. I really admired the great acting. It's about Queen Elisabeth II in recent times, ending with Princess Diana's death and the crisis it caused the Royal Family. Suddenly, as the movie had almost ended, the LORD spoke to me and said: "She (Queen Elisabeth) will be the last of England's Queens during the time of grace. Her death will mark the beginning of terrible Tribulation on earth. I have extended her life and reign for many years. The passing of my servant Billy Graham will also be a sign of my imminent return. I AM COMING SOON! Warn My people to watch and pray. Warn My people to keep their lamps burning brightly. I will surely come for My Bride and take her away from the coming wrath."

I’ve always been an experimental artist, but it was never what I did or my label like being a performance artist. Rather, I was searching for the perfect image for a long, long time, many decades, and a way to unlock the key to the perfect image, which had been unlocked by the great artists of the past. No matter how long this process has taken, or if I will be able to find a way to accomplish it due to a lack of funds, the final goal wasn’t to be experimental, but rather to reach a state of realization and enlightenment which would feel like something similar to seeing the light or capturing the light, feeling a sense of heaviness and depth and of completeness. I’m not surprised that Van Gogh was shot and didn’t commit suicide and according to Rothko’s daughter, her father would have never taken his own life. While Van Gogh reached his peak during 1888 which was when he did those famous paintings, someone like Picasso knew he had reached his and was smart enough to get into ceramics. De Koo ...
The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It was besieged several times and controlling it has been important to controlling the country. The Tower has served variously as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public records office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. From the early 14th century until the reign of Charles II, a procession would be led from the Tower to Westminster Abbey on the coronation of a monarch. In the absence of the monarch, the Constable of the Tower is in charge of the castle. This was a powerful and trusted position in the medieval period. In the late 15th century the castle was the prison of the Princes in the Tower. Under the Tudors, the Tower became used less as a royal residence, and despite attempts to refortify and repair the castle its defences lagged behind developments to deal with artillery. The peak period of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who ha ...

Just finished reading 5 historical novels of all the 16th century English queens from Katherine of Aragon to Elizabeth I. Good old King Henry VIII was in the mix too. Worst part of that century was not the beheadings of queens and traitors at the Tower or the burning of heretics. No, it was the bear-baitings that were considered prime entertainment at the court revels. Shameful!
USELESS & INTERESTING FACTS Fingernails grow nearly 4 times faster than toenails Fingerprints serve a function: they provide traction for the fingers to grasp things. Finnish folklore says that when Santa comes to Finland to deliver gifts, he leaves his sleigh behind and rides on a goat named Ukko instead. According to French tradition, Santa Claus has a brother named Bells Nichols, who visits homes on New Year's Eve after everyone is asleep, and if a plate is set out for him, he fills it with cookies and cakes. Five NFL teams have bird nicknames: Arizona Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks. Fleas are essential to the health of armadillos and hedgehogs; they provide necessary stimulation of the skin. Deloused armadillos and hedgehogs will die. Fleas have killed more people (due to Bubonic plague and such) than all wars throughout history combined. Flirtation between the memb ...

I've noticed the friends of mine that were so sure Obama was the way to go have become rather silent. Maybe that's because they have figured out how huge of an error they made. A leader brings two sides together, not drive them apart. God help us.
