Yesterday, we toured Royal Albert Hall and Westminster Abbey. Today, we study one of the great early film scores by Max Steiner from the 1933 version of King Kong. Tomorrow is our London Symphony Orchestra archive session and Friday we go to the BBC Symphony concert to hear works by Anna Clyne, Benjamin Britten, and Edward Elgar. Just a sample of a week's itinerary on a University of Delaware study abroad program. Wish you all were here!
This theme from Edward Elgar is one the reasons I compose music. It reaches me deeply.

Anyone here big classical music listeners? I'm trying to find some good composers, but I won't have it from the people who don't have Shoshtakovich in their top 10 favorite composers of the 20th century. I'm just guessing nobody has a preference or hates classical music, so I'm just gonna hope for the best. -Blaise

Today is the 104th anniversary of the first performance of Elgar's First Symphony, which was performed in Manchester with Hans Richter conducting. My new favorite video on YouTube: Edward William Elgar - Nimrod (London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony)
Delghtful walk from Stainforth to Catrigg Force in Yorkshire Dales. A haunt of Edward Elgar, could be yours for £30k.
So, from the nation which brought you Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Who, the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Benjamin Britten, Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Henry Purcell, William Byrd, and more (we'll even give them their adopted musicians like Haydn and Handel), this is the best London could give us as a salute to English music?
In all this celebration of British music why not Benjamin Britten, Gustave Holst, Sir Edward Elgar, G F Handel, Gilbert & Sullivan, etc ???
They played Edward Elgar during the closing ceremonies! One of my favorite composers.
Really disappointed Edward Elgar wasnt available to perform
Edward Elgar died in 1934. Did his ghost compose Salut D'Amour (in 1988, per your Olympics commentary!)?

I would recommend several songs to anyone who seeks beautiful music for a funeral: (A) "The Great Gate of Kiev", by Mussorgsky; (B) "Variation Nine/Adagio", from Elgar's "Enigma Variations". Modest Mussorgsky and Edward Elgar composed these moving melodies in tribute to dear friends.
If the London Olympics opening ceremonies were a feat of theatrical storytelling in a stadium setting, the closing ceremonies are going to be more of a British party, rocking the night away with a program of quintessentially British music. Sorry, Edward Elgar, we're not sure you're making the cut.

"Over my head, I hear music in the air; there must be a God somewhere." (Spiritual)
Feeling a reality check coming on - listening to Edward Elgar and realizing how much I miss classical music; reading Oscar Wilde and realizing how much "fluff" I've been reading lately. Time to get serious! Life's too short to spend time idling.
While we enjoy the London 2012 The Olympic Games, take a moment to listen to Edward Elgar's tribute to London - his 'Cockaigne' overture captures the vivacity and spirit of the great city in Edwardian times. As Elgar describes in his own words; 'honest, healthy, humorous and strong, but not vulgar', which is just as relevant today! Here's a great recording by Sir John Barbirolli.
Taking nothing away from Danny Boyle, can we also have "top shout" and a knighthood for Rick Smith, Musical Director for the Olympic Opening Ceremony? Here's his sleeve notes from the soundtrack album "How do you soundtrack a city? Or a nation? Is there a score to be written for this green and pleasant land of song, our forever awe-inspiring country? How do you start to summarise the very sound of a place when – in just under two hundred years – one small border town is capable of producing both Edward Elgar and F Buttons? You can’t, so you don’t even try. You follow your heart and you look for the defining moments in culture, the sounds that continue to resonate. It’s the peal of bells drifting miles across the Welsh valleys and it’s the shudder of bass that shakes the foundations of an underground house club in Dalston. It’s the gentle picking of guitar strings around a festival campfire and it’s the bombast of a band at the height of their powers playing beneath the impossible arch of ...
