Duval County & School Board

Duval County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2010, the population was 864,263. Its county seat is Jacksonville, with which the Duval County government has been consolidated since 1968. Duval County was established in 1822, and is named for William Pope DuVal, Governor of Florida Territory from 1822 to 1834. BLACK HISTORY FACT: William M Raines was built on a $2 million budget that duplicated Fletcher High School. The decision to build Raines High School came when the black population of Duval county began to grow and needed to be educated. During 1964 blacks and whites were educated separately. And since Jean Ribault High School (an all white institution at the time) did not want to admit black students, the School Board built Raines High School. Raines opened it's doors unnamed. Initially the school was known as school The students decided to have the school name changed to William M Raines (a respected, educated black man and principal of Matthew Gilbert Senior-Junior school). Dr. Andrew Robinson was the first principal of Raines High. He served until 1970 and left his philosophy with the school, "Ichibon" (meaning to be number one, you must act like number one).
