We started this week in Galveston with the Coast Guard and our friends at Galveston County monitoring the oil spill, then it was on to choir practice, school lunches, horse judging, walks on the beach, karate drills, bug stories, baby hugs, payroll, praise team, tennis tournaments, an actual gala event, giggling with my Marcie, balloon twisting, face painting and a speech for Grandmaster Norris. What a delightfully busy week. In the words of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, "What is a week end?"
Lucy Fortunato Smith ~ Calico Cat May 18, 1996 to March 29, 2014 Lucy, our 17 year old cat passed away today. She lived with us for 12 of those years, after we rescued the beautiful multi-colored Calico from the San Francisco ASPCA. She enjoyed all-day naps and middle of the night yowl fests. She loved sitting on laps and a nice scratch under the chin. But don’t even think of touching her feet or rubbing her stomach, or a kiss with sharp teeth was forth coming. If Lucy was a character on Downton Abbey, she would have been Violet Crawley the Dowager Countess of Grantham, elegant but with a bit of a bite. Lucy was a committed bachelorette during the 12 years she lived with us, however the Vet believes the stretch marks on her stomach hint at a more “wild” youth. MaryAnn and I adopted Lucy during our second year of marriage. We got her thinking if we could keep a cat alive; we were probably ready to start a family. Well two kids and two additional cats later, we realize our family didn’t start with . ...

Could you pass along a message to Julian Fellowes? Get rid of Miss Bunting. Let Dowager Countess find a match for Tom.
Dear Julian Fellowes, why not have the Dowager Countess find a good match for Tom Branson. NOT Miss Bunting!
I finally got through ALL of Downton Abbey Season 4! Tom Branson has become one of my favorite characters, and...dancing with the Dowager Countess! That just made my day! I'm also having second thoughts about who killed Bates' first wife. I REALLY don't like Barrows, and I thought he had SOME good qualities, but no.nothing...And the Lord Grantham seems to have caught some common sense somewhere...
Maggie Smith won the best actress award in 1970 for her role in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". As I watched this movie today, it was disconcerting to hear the voice of the Dowager Countess coming out of the mouth of a hot babe, Jean Brodie. Maggie Smith is amazing!

It’s the weekend before Stitches and I’m busy packing up kits for the Kira K Designs booth (One of my favorite kits to put together is my Belle Epoque Shawl using Canon Hand Dyes yarn with colors inspired by the characters of Downtown Abbey. Here is the full collection. The top row is the ladies, from left to right: Lavinia Swire, Lady Sybil, Lady Edith, Lady Mary, Dowager Countess, and Isobel Crawley Bottom row is the gents: Mr. Carson, Matthew Crawley, Tom Branson, Sir Richard Carlisle, Mr. Bates, and Lord Grantham I put these together based on colors rather than characters, so some combinations, like Lady Mary & the Dowager Countess or Lord Grantham & Mr. Bates, make sense, while others like Tom Branson & Sir Richard Carlisle or Lady Sybil & Lavinia Swire, are a little funny. If anyone has suggestions on color combinations, let me know!

I'd love to see Dame Judy Dench do a cameo as another Dowager Countess, from a rival family of the Crawleys
There's a Maggie Smith film from the 70s on. It's very strange hearing the Dowager Countess's voice coming out of a younger woman.
Best line I have ever heard on a television program. Dowager Countess of Grantham on Downton Abbey upon hearing a jazz band for the first time. "Is that what it is? Do you think any of them know what the others are playing?"
What if Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey could do a crossover episode? That would be amazing... Dowager Countess versus Queen Cersei?

In the manner of the Dowager Countess: When discussing Downton with other viewers, I'm often amused at those who claim to have been "born of the wrong age"...as though the magic of time travel would also transform their present day status equivalent of chambermaid or footman to that of a Grantham...
Tonight Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess Grantham had a great line. I may be the only person to find it funny. Tonight's episode featured a large house party where a renowned singer provided after dinner entertainment. The singer introduced her next number as "O mio Babbino Caro" by Puccini from the opera Gianni Schicchi. At this point she leaned over to Lady Crowley and said : Oh good, you can always count on Puccini, at least she is not singing any of that dreadful German Lieder. ( Herr Hiss I am sure you would laugh out loud at this ! )
That Dowager Countess is so saucy. Wish I had her writer.
The entire cast is stellar but it is Dame Maggie Smith in her incarnation as the Dowager Countess of Grantham who reigns supreme.

I'm bummed that I've already seen this season of Downton Abbey, so I'm going to spoil it all for those that have yet to see it: Upstairs: Robert, The Earl of Grantham, frets over the future of Downton Abbey. Violet, The Dowager Countess of Grantham, bickers with Isobel Crawley who defiantly bickers right back. Lady Mary is pursued by suitors. Lady Mary is cold and pensive, and says things like "I know you must think that, but if you think that, let me tell you that you are wrong. However, I must admit, I once thought as you did. And so did we all, I suppose. It seems we must all change our ways of thinking these days. At times I don't want anything to change. Is that wrong?" etc. Lady Edith, ever craving attention is, as ever, given little of it. Cora, Countess of Grantham, and Tom, Irish, continue to be very boring. Downstairs: Mr. Carson, butler, "harumphs" a lot. Mrs. Hughes, housekeeper, learns the occasional secret which she reluctantly but inevitably reveals in order to help people. Mr. Bates, valet ...

You are Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham. You’re the imperious, aristocratic head of your family who (almost) always gets her way, and you don’t suffer fools gladly. "Furpile: An event where all the members of the ‘pack’ gather together in a giant physical pile, to make someone feel better. ... Imagine the adorableness of a basket of kittens. Now imagine those kittens are alphas Mycroft Holmes, Nick Fury, Violet Crawley the Dowager Countess of Grantham, and Tywin Lannister." this is research for school i promise
"Don't be defeatist, it's so middle class." - Dowager Countess, Downton Abbey. Lol.
Got my Dowager Countess kit today. Yippee! -- now I can get started and hopefully catch up to everyone else before long. Thank you Ebony for the lovely package and the nice book you added in for me. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness!
High Tea and Cucumber Sandwiches, with the Dowager Countess of Rendell
Isobel: "What should we call each other?" The Dowager Countess: "Well, we could always start with Mrs. Crawley and Lady Grantham."
Downton Abbey = best TV show ever. The Dowager Countess is my idol.
I can't wait for more of the Dowager Countess!!
Thoughts of the day: Maggie Smith, or the Dowager Countess of Grantham rather, makes me smile with her witty one liners, I wish water tasted like coke sometimes, and I really don't know how I lived before espresso- was I only half awake for so many years? Hmm...
Ladies, my afternoon tea today will be in celebration of the life and acting career of Maggie Smith. The Brit, born on December 28, 1934, is 79 years old and she has given us fabulous characters like Hook's Granny Wendy, Gunilla Garson Goldberg of The First Wives' Club, Mother Superior from Sister Act, and Professor Minerva McGonagall of the Harry Potter series. Still, my favorite of her most recent work has to be Downton Abbey's Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley. Her lines give me infinite joy and her delivery is like sitting beneath a tree in summer, shady. I love it.
I wonder what would happen if the Dowager Countess and Lucille Bluth crossed paths...
Lady Edith Crawley: “Listen everyone. You have a journalist in the family…” Lady Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham: “Since we have a country solicitor, and a car mechanic, it’s only a matter of time…” Downton Abbey
"Granny Grantham"? You will be respectful when speaking of the Dowager Countess, young lady. (I also allow Mother Superior)
Indeed she seems to be unfamiliar with that sensation! Isobel Crawley and Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Lady Grantham are such a dear couple of friends, really. We love them!
My brother has written me all about this! How glorious! I do so agree with what Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Lady Grantham says! "*claps her hands with glee* Oh I just love them!! They are such children at heart. And Clara's reaction to the Chateau in France...Yes indeed! I suspected she'd go over the moon with that!" ;)
Before WWI nurses in the UK had no standard certification. Training was ad hoc and varied greatly. During the war many upperclass and middle class women volunteered to help the war effort as nurses and ambulance drivers. A great many were killed in action. When "The Great War" was over these women found it hard to simply go back to their knitting. They'd been through so many horrendous experiences. A number of these women banded together and started the club I now belong to. They needed a place to be with other women who had shared their experiences. Over the years, the club admitted other professional members and included men. One of the most enjoyable things about attending the Christmas Dinner at the club was meeting the truly formidable British women who still make up the membership-- Think Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Isobel Crawley, or Lady Mary Crawley. These women are professional women, not minor royalty, but they show that same indominable spirit the women in Downton Ab ...
Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Lady Grantham is such a generous and dear woman. Please visit her page and show her some love?
The real reason "Matthew" left the series ;) 'Downton Abbey' Cast Stinks Because Of A No Wash Policy From HuffPost TV: Just when we thought "Downton Abbey" was the coolest show on TV -- Will and Kate are tuning in on the regular, after all -- Sophie McShera (Daisy) divulged a rather disgusting detail. Apparently, there's a "no wash" policy in place so the costumes can keep their historic look. “We do stink, as they don’t wash our costumes ... they have these weird patches, which are sewn into the armpits and which they wash separately,” McShera revealed to The Telegraph. We can't imagine the Dowager Countess approves of this.
I like that title "Dowager Countess." Maggie Smith plays her role with sheer aplomb on Downton Abbey. Is anyone watching the recap and hints of upcoming Season 4 tonight on PBS?
Wanted to share these pics of some of the lovely ladies of DA. Notably missing are Lady Grantham and the Dowager Countess, but look how lovely Anna Looks here. And as a pianist, I have to say that I think Edith's little dress is super cute!

Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley) Sorry about the vase. Maggie Smith (Lady Violet, Dowager Countess of Gratham) Don't be, don't be. It was a wedding present from a frightful aunt. I have hated it for half a century. Love when Lady Violet appears in any scene! Rest In Peace Matthew!
Here's my complete blurb and the menu for the Blue Belle Inn's Betsy Tacy Mystery Dinner: February 7 and 8, 2014 - Betsy and Tacy Go Downton ~ A Fractured Fairy Tale Style Murder Mystery by Sherrie Hansen When Betsy Ray’s British cousin, Matthew Crawley, fakes his death in a car accident and comes to Deep Valley, MN because he needs a break from Downton Abbey, a round of parties is planned to introduce him to the Crowd. When Lord Grantham and the Dowager Countess cross the pond to put an end to his lark, the unthinkable happens and Matthew is murdered. (Yes, this time, he’s really dead.) Did someone tamper with his dance card, hotwire his motor car, or spike his punch? Or was it the caterwauling during the Cat Duet that killed him? Betsy, Tacy, Tib, Bad Boy Tony, Busty Bonnie (who we’ve never quite trusted), Joe Schmo, and Thomas, the Valet are all suspects. One lucky sleuth who solves the mystery will receive their dinner free! $24.95 per person “Onion Sandwich” Soup a la Mr. Ray, Green Leaf .. ...

"Don't be defeatist dear, it's terribly middle class". Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham (applausi).
I can see it now! Him, along with Ms. Patmore and the Dowager Countess shooting down drones. Too funny! 😃
I like the way your dad thinks - I wish the Dowager Countess would give Thomas the what-for as well!
! Watching the movie "Weekend" and saw much more of Lord Gillingham than I bargained for. Dowager Countess would be appalled!
The Dowager Countess of Grantham just saved 's life

Ellen Gray's weekend TV picks From left to right: Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess and Michelle Dockery as ...
I'm really losing interest in these people. The Dowager Countess needs a spin-off.
Whether she’s the Dowager Countess or Minerva McGonagall, Maggie Smith delivers.
Even after so many years, I still have trouble believing that McGonagall and the Dowager Countess are both Maggie Smith.
I don't know who's sassier: Professor McGonagall or the Countess Dowager
Photo: You have to love the Dowager Countess of Grantham
