Downton Abbey SPOOF He's already Hollywood royalty, but now George Clooney has become an Earl – in the world of Downton Abbey, anyway. Clooney assumed his long-awaited and temporary role in the British aristocracy in a special 9-minute episode of the show for the TV fundraiser Text Santa. In the hilarious tongue-in-cheek video above, Lord Grantham – with the help of Ab Fab's Patsy Stone! – sees what life would be like at the Abbey if he were replaced by a certain George Oceans Gravity, Marquis of Hollywood – otherwise known as Lord Hollywood. And we'll just say Downton has been turned upside down by Clooney's charms. In fact, Lord Hollywood had such an effect on Dame Maggie Smith's character, the Dowager Countess, that when he kissed her hand she fell off her perch and collapsed on the floor. "That man has got the entire household behaving like fools!" Lord Grantham says, after seeing how his loved ones behave without his influence. "Downton has gone to rack and ruin without me." Luckily, the whol ...

“Downton Abbey” was recently renewed for a fifth season, but it looks like some of the main actors may not stay for long: both Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora) and Maggie Smith (the Dowager Countess) have hinted that they may soon leave “Downton” to focus on other aspects of their careers.
Isobel Crawley to Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham : "You are as infirm as Windsor Castle". brilliant!
LONDON (AP) - British royalty has met acting aristocracy, as Britain's Queen Elizabeth II bestowed an honor on Maggie Smith during a ceremony at Windsor Castle. Smith, who plays the imperious Dowager Countess of Grantham on "Downton Abbey," was made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honor Friday in recognition of her six decades in theater, cinema and television. The award is limited to 65 living people "of distinction." Other members include physicist Stephen Hawking, actor Ian McKellen and artist David Hockney. The 79-year-old actress has won two Academy Awards, for "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and "California Suite." She is currently filming "The Lady in the Van," reprising her stage role as a homeless eccentric who parked for years on the driveway of playwright Alan Bennett.

The Dowager Countess is to Downton Abbey as Tyrion Lannister is to Game of Thrones. It just wouldn't be worth it without them.

Life Isn't So Cordial in the Abbey for Dowager Countess of Grantham OR Dame Maggie Smith Is Just Having a Bad Day
Three Thoughts on Downton Abbey, S1E5 - 1. My current favorite cast member? The Downton doggy. I don't know his name, but he's adorable. 2. This episode, with yet another skirmish between the Dowager Countess and Mrs. Crawley (over the Grantham Cup at the flower show) and between Thomas/O'Brien and Bates/Anna, is probably my least favorite to date. Again, it's all very well executed, it just has the vague, stale whiff of been-there/seen-that coming off it. 3. The details of the show, particularly of the cooking, point to the economic realities of the world without fully addressing them. For instance, what was the food budget for a household the size of Downton? How much went to waste? What was done with the "leftovers"? We're essentially talking about a family of five who, based solely on what we see (which, understandably, is a limited sampling), seem to dine pretty spectacularly ALL THE TIME. Even if that means some poultry occasionally needs to be subject to the five-second rule.
Here is a Downton Abbey meme for you. Though the Dowager Countess is asking for the opposite reason.
I have to keep telling myself: In the words of the Dowager Countess (Downton Abbey), "Stop whining and find something to do." YES, M'LADY!
I think I want to be the Dowager Countess of Grantham when I grow up! Tee Hee!! ;)
Lucy Fortunato Smith ~ Calico Cat May 18, 1996 to March 29, 2014 Lucy, our 17 year old cat passed away today. She lived with us for 12 of those years, after we rescued the beautiful multi-colored Calico from the San Francisco ASPCA. She enjoyed all-day naps and middle of the night yowl fests. She loved sitting on laps and a nice scratch under the chin. But don’t even think of touching her feet or rubbing her stomach, or a kiss with sharp teeth was forth coming. If Lucy was a character on Downton Abbey, she would have been Violet Crawley the Dowager Countess of Grantham, elegant but with a bit of a bite. Lucy was a committed bachelorette during the 12 years she lived with us, however the Vet believes the stretch marks on her stomach hint at a more “wild” youth. MaryAnn and I adopted Lucy during our second year of marriage. We got her thinking if we could keep a cat alive; we were probably ready to start a family. Well two kids and two additional cats later, we realize our family didn’t start with . ...

Dear Julian Fellowes, why not have the Dowager Countess find a good match for Tom Branson. NOT Miss Bunting!
I finally got through ALL of Downton Abbey Season 4! Tom Branson has become one of my favorite characters, and...dancing with the Dowager Countess! That just made my day! I'm also having second thoughts about who killed Bates' first wife. I REALLY don't like Barrows, and I thought he had SOME good qualities, but no.nothing...And the Lord Grantham seems to have caught some common sense somewhere...
Maggie Smith won the best actress award in 1970 for her role in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". As I watched this movie today, it was disconcerting to hear the voice of the Dowager Countess coming out of the mouth of a hot babe, Jean Brodie. Maggie Smith is amazing!

It’s the weekend before Stitches and I’m busy packing up kits for the Kira K Designs booth (One of my favorite kits to put together is my Belle Epoque Shawl using Canon Hand Dyes yarn with colors inspired by the characters of Downtown Abbey. Here is the full collection. The top row is the ladies, from left to right: Lavinia Swire, Lady Sybil, Lady Edith, Lady Mary, Dowager Countess, and Isobel Crawley Bottom row is the gents: Mr. Carson, Matthew Crawley, Tom Branson, Sir Richard Carlisle, Mr. Bates, and Lord Grantham I put these together based on colors rather than characters, so some combinations, like Lady Mary & the Dowager Countess or Lord Grantham & Mr. Bates, make sense, while others like Tom Branson & Sir Richard Carlisle or Lady Sybil & Lavinia Swire, are a little funny. If anyone has suggestions on color combinations, let me know!

There's a Maggie Smith film from the 70s on. It's very strange hearing the Dowager Countess's voice coming out of a younger woman.
Best line I have ever heard on a television program. Dowager Countess of Grantham on Downton Abbey upon hearing a jazz band for the first time. "Is that what it is? Do you think any of them know what the others are playing?"

In the manner of the Dowager Countess: When discussing Downton with other viewers, I'm often amused at those who claim to have been "born of the wrong age"...as though the magic of time travel would also transform their present day status equivalent of chambermaid or footman to that of a Grantham...
Tonight Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess Grantham had a great line. I may be the only person to find it funny. Tonight's episode featured a large house party where a renowned singer provided after dinner entertainment. The singer introduced her next number as "O mio Babbino Caro" by Puccini from the opera Gianni Schicchi. At this point she leaned over to Lady Crowley and said : Oh good, you can always count on Puccini, at least she is not singing any of that dreadful German Lieder. ( Herr Hiss I am sure you would laugh out loud at this ! )
That Dowager Countess is so saucy. Wish I had her writer.
The entire cast is stellar but it is Dame Maggie Smith in her incarnation as the Dowager Countess of Grantham who reigns supreme.

Mrs. Crawley: You take everything as a compliment. The Dowager Countess: And I advise you to do the same. It saves many an awkward moment. I would like to be a combination of these two ladies, each powerful in her own way.

4 social media lessons for community managers and digital marketers from the Dowager Countess of Downton Abbey on how to remain poised in the wake of change.
I am thinking about the advice of the "Dowager Countess" on Downton Abbey. "IT IS THE JOB OF GRANDMOTHERS TO INTERFERE".
I'm bummed that I've already seen this season of Downton Abbey, so I'm going to spoil it all for those that have yet to see it: Upstairs: Robert, The Earl of Grantham, frets over the future of Downton Abbey. Violet, The Dowager Countess of Grantham, bickers with Isobel Crawley who defiantly bickers right back. Lady Mary is pursued by suitors. Lady Mary is cold and pensive, and says things like "I know you must think that, but if you think that, let me tell you that you are wrong. However, I must admit, I once thought as you did. And so did we all, I suppose. It seems we must all change our ways of thinking these days. At times I don't want anything to change. Is that wrong?" etc. Lady Edith, ever craving attention is, as ever, given little of it. Cora, Countess of Grantham, and Tom, Irish, continue to be very boring. Downstairs: Mr. Carson, butler, "harumphs" a lot. Mrs. Hughes, housekeeper, learns the occasional secret which she reluctantly but inevitably reveals in order to help people. Mr. Bates, valet ...
Where would we be without Dowager Countess Violet Crawley? Violet is a greater etiquette master than Emily Post and doles out tougher love than Judge Mathis. Downton Abbey would absolutely fall apart without her. Of course, Violet wouldn't exist without the great Dame Maggie Smith, who turns 79 ...

Last night was full of surprises. The Dowager Countess ... at her very best. Outstanding season premiere.
Last night on Downton, the Dowager Countess opined, "Just because you're an old widow, that doesn't mean you need to eat off a tray." I tell you, that woman can cut to the bone. And I take it as a personal affront.
