Vidic: We have to perform United skipper Nemanja Vidic believes Saturday's trip to Sunderland is even more important than the Champions League tie against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Reds' schedule after the disappointing defeat to West Brom included two away games in a week before another international break. With a point secured in Ukraine from a 1-1 draw, the Serbian centre-back is determined that the champions defend well again on Wearside. "I think this is actually a more important game," Vidic told ManUtd.com at the Donbass Arena after the game. "Even though it was Shakhtar in the Champions League. "I think we have to perform well at Sunderland, like we did against Shakhtar, in terms of our defending. With the quality we have up front, we are always able to score goals. I think there's no question about that. "But we have to defend right and have the right mentality to ensure we can be in a good position." Shakhtar made life difficult for United in Donetsk but the draw keeps David Moyes' side on top of Gr ...
Vidic has faith despite poor start Nemanja Vidic‘s faith in the quality of Manchester United‘s squad has not been shaken by their awful start to the Premier League campaign. The tenure of David Moyes has been a curious affair to date. Of the nine matches United have played under Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, it could be argued three were impressive, a further four somewhere between decent and average, the remaining two absolutely atrocious. Wednesday night’s Champions League draw with Shakhtar Donetsk falls firmly in the first category, both for the battling qualities United displayed and, importantly, the result, which was the first time in five attempts any English team had avoided defeat in Europe’s most prestigious club competition at the Donbass Arena. Yet, when United head to Sunderland on Saturday evening, they will do so as a team for whom anything but victory would be a calamity following those pitiful Premier League performances against Manchester City and West Brom. “We have to acc ...
Chris Wheeler : David Moyes gets it right for Manchester United on tricky night at Shakhtar Donetsk Chris Wheeler : "A cold, wet night in eastern Ukraine was about as welcoming as it sounds in front of a hostile full house at the Donbass Arena, even if the atmosphere inside fell some way short of the 'cauldron' promised by Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu. These places rarely are, to be honest. "Moyes stood on the touchline too far from the overhead heaters built into the roof of this futuristic stadium to feel the benefit, wrapped up in a club anorak over his suit to shield him from the elements. "What he witnessed was a result, and a performance, that will at least head off talk of a growing crisis that has engulfed him since Saturday's shocking home defeat to West Bromwich Albion. "Nothing outstanding. But it was a professional job in the circumstances and what is required on these difficult excursions into unknown territory behind the old Iron Curtain. "Moyes would have been much happier if United had he ...
Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 United David Moyes was denied a morale-boosting Champions League win in Donetsk -- but still left the Donbass Arena as the first manager of an English team to nick a point from a trip to Shakhtar in this competition after a 1-1 draw. Moyes can do with all the little snippets of posivitity he can lay his hands on just now.

Shakhtar & Dortmund both deserve to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals The two teams served up some fantastic attacking football during their 2-2 draw at the Donbass Arena, and can certainly count themselves among the top eight sides in Europe COMMENT By Enis Koylu When Mats Hummels powered home a header in the 87th minute of the Champions League round of 16 tie between Borussia Dortmund and Shakhtar Donetsk at the Donbass Arena, not only had he given his side a second away goal and a 2-2 draw, but handed one of the competition's best games this season a fitting ending. On the backdrop of a tragic plane crash in the city which is believed to have claimed the lives of a number of football fans, the champions of Ukraine and Germany exemplified what modern football is all about throughout the 90 minutes. They attacked relentlessly, constantly looking for an opening, both using their trademark quick passing game to create a brilliantly entertaining spectacle. It was only appropriate for two teams ...

Warming up´ for the big match [12.02.] The German champions´ game at the impressive Donbass Arena in Donetsk is the first highlight of the year 2013. "This is the first last-16 tie for all of us, you shouldn´t need any additional motivation," said Borussia Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp in the build-up to the Champions League match against Shakhtar. Sebastian Kehl is in no doubt what the goal is for this game. "I´m confident that we get a good result which will help us to progress to the next round in three weeks´ time," said the Dortmund skipper. With two wins and a draw from their travels in the Ukraine, the stats are in favour of the Black ´n´ Yellows. "Unfortunately you always only know after the game whether the stats have any value," said Kehl , adding: "We are well prepared and we know how hard a game this will be. We only focus on things we can affect." Borussia have studied the opposition thoroughly, watching all 12 games during their training camp. They will face Shakhtar with respect but n ...

Old Trafford side to bring in Shakhtar Donestk midfielder. According to Italian source CalcioMercato Man United have reached an agreement with Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk to sign highly rated midfielder Fernandinho. The 27 year old box to box operator is into his eighth season at the Donbass Arena and may well feel he has achieved as much as he can in Ukraine and would certainly jump at the chance of a move to Old Trafford. The tough tackling Shakhtar midfielder has had a splendid season this term, helping his side to a 13 point lead at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League as well as guiding Mircea Lucescu’s side into the last 16 of the Champions League with some fine displays. Fernadinho has come in for a lot of praise during the Champions League group stage, where Shakhtar edged out Chelsea to secure qualification with the Brazilian international being especially eye-catching in the club’s win over the West London side in early November. Feb13:Awkward scenes at d Donbass Arena. Chelsea show up in full matchkit, ready 2 take 2 the field for Shakhtar v Dortmund in UEFA last 16
Chelsea made history last week for all the wrong reasons, despite a powerful 6-1 win over Danish side FC Nordsjaelland in a midweek Champions League group stage match. The Blues, the defending champions, were eliminated from Europe's premier club football tournament, becoming the first holders to surrender their crown so early in the season. The win at Stamford Bridge should have been accompanied by a positive result for Ukrainian Premier League side Shakhtar Donetsk, who, having already qualified, were hosting Italian champions Juventus at the Donbass Arena. Unfortunately for Roman Abramovich's side, the eastern Europeans were beaten by an Olexandr Kucher own goal, just before the hour mark. Guardiola has been linked with several clubs after leaving the Spanish giants Barcelona last summer Abramovich's sacking of the Champions League-winning Roberto Di Matteo led to suggestions that former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola would be targeted with renewed vigour. The Catalan was the subject of considerable spe ...
Juventus clinched top spot in Group E with a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League clash at the Donbass Arena on Wednesday evening. Needing only a point to qualify for the round of 16, an own goal from Olexandr Kucher shortly before the hour mark sent the Bianconeri to victory, leapfrogging the Ukrainians, who were forced to settle for second place, with third placed Chelsea dropping into the Europa League despite their victory over FC Nordsjaelland. Paul Pogba was handed a start in midfield for the visitors, with Sebastian Giovinco and Mirko Vucinic tasked with leading the charge up front. Shakhtar named a strong team despite already sealing qualification, but Luiz Adriano was banned after his controversial goal during the game against Nordsjaelland. The match took some time to get going, with the first sniff of an opportunity falling Juve’s way, when Giovinco clipped a pass through to Vucinic, whose first time volley from an angle was sent into orbit. The pair would combine again, th ...
PRE-MATCH BRIEFING: CHELSEA V FC NORDSJAELLAND As Stamford Bridge prepares for a night of divided attention, club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton study Matchday Six... TALKING POINTS It's not over yet. The corpulent dame may be gargling in her dressing room, but unless Shakhtar - formidable at the Donbass Arena - fail to beat Juventus,Chelsea need to see off the Danes of Nordsjaelland to keep our Champions League defence alive. It eems churlish to dwell on the unwelcome milestone of becoming the first winners of this format to bow out after the first phase next season. Other clubs may consider qualifying for the knockout phase a trophy in itself: the fact is that we are still able tocall ourselves champions of Europe. In any case some of the continent's most fabled sides have fallen at the first hurdle in defence of their European crown: Real Madrid in 1960, Celtic 1967, Feyenoord 1970, Ajax 1973, Liverpool 1978, Nottingham Forest 1980, Hamburg 1983, and Dinamo Bucharest 1986. Shakhtar Donetsk v Juventus Preview MATCH IN A SENTENCE: This is truly the match to follow on Wednesday as its result will have all sorts of ramifications, not only for the two sides contesting it but for European Cup holders Chelsea as well. BREAKDOWN: It’s really quite straightforward: a draw will take both Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus into the Champions League Round of 16. That’s the result most pundits, whether skeptical or just realistic, are expecting to see on the Donbass Arena scoreboard after 90 minutes on Wednesday. And it’s a result that would consign Chelsea to the Europa League. A Chelsea win coupled with a trip-up by Juventus in Ukraine, however, would see the Bianconeri drop into Europe’s second tier and Chelsea go into the December 20 draw. “It’s an extraordinary situation,” exclaimed Shakhtar manager Mircea Lucescu in his Tuesday press conference. “Two big clubs like Chelsea and Juventus are depending on our result, since Shakhtar are top of the group. What could be bette ...
***All eyes on crunch European clash*** after returning to winning ways in the championship courtesy of last night’s derby success over Torino, Juventus will now focus all their attentions on progressing through to the Champions League knockout stages. The Bianconeri require a draw from Wednesday night’s clash with Shakhtar at the Donbass Arena to guarantee qualification, but Antonio Conte will be gunning for the three points which would see his side top Group E. Those who featured in Saturday night’s 3-0 victory against the Granata conducted a warm-down, while the remainder of the group were put through their paces in a regular training session. Giorgio Chiellini, who continues to follow an individual training regime in his bid to regain full fitness, joined his team-mates for part of the session. The Bianconeri will hold a further workout at 10.30am tomorrow ahead of their afternoon departure for Donetsk. Simone Pepe will miss out on the trip to Ukraine after feeling further discomfort in his left ...

Is Chelsea chasing shadows ? On October 24, 2012 · In Sports 7:54 am . DONETSK, Ukraine (AFP) – Roberto Di Matteo’s thoughts quickly turned to Chelsea’s return game with Shakhtar Donetsk after seeing his side beaten 2-1 by the Ukrainian champions in Champions League Group E. Chelsea were left chasing shadows for much of the night at Donetsk’s Donbass Arena on Tuesday, and even an 88th-minute consolation from Brazilian starlet Oscar could not disguise the fact that the home side ran out worthy winners. Mircea Lucescu’s well-drilled team now enjoy a three-point lead over defending champions Chelsea in Group E, ahead of the return fixture between the sides at Stamford Bridge on November 7. Chelsea will hope to exact swift revenge, and reclaim top spot, by prevailing in that encounter, but they were at least given reason to cheer by Juventus’ unexpected 1-1 draw at Danish debutants FC Nordsjaelland. The draw left the Italian champions a point behind the Blues in third place, but Juve will expect ...

Spain booked their place in the final of Euro 2012 when they beat neighbours Portugal 4-2 on penalties at the Donbass Arena.
Three men have symbolized the apparent lack of effectiveness of Portugal in the area of truth: Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Hugo Almeida, the trio attack tenure at kickoff. For proof, Portugal has no framed shot of the eleven attempted in 120 minutes of play this is lamentable. Cristiano Ronaldo, joint top scorer with 3 goals, and that was gaining ground over the competition, was unable to point out that its provocations by the ball (6 fouls suffered by the Real Madrid player on 19 whistled for Portugal). Placed in free electron, more than in left-winger, CR7, will all miss against Spain (7 shots including one in the area), including one against, against 2 to 4 in the 90th minute, concluded by a shot left in the clouds. Lionel Messi (L) of Barcelona battles with Tomas Hubschman of Shakhtar Donetsk during the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final 2nd Leg match between Shakhtar Donetsk and Barcelona, at the Donbass Arena on April 12, 2011 in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Spain progressed to its third consecutive major final on penalties after playing to a 0-0 draw with Portugal in the Euro 2012 semifinal at the Donbass Arena. Despite playing at far from their best and with chances to find the net at a premium, a total of 120 minutes failed to separate the two sides. With the shootout level at 3-2 after Bruno Alves rattled the bar it was Cesc Fabregas who netted the winner. Vicente Del Bosque sprung a real surprise before kickoff as he made one change to the side that defeated France in the previous round, electing to start with Alvaro Negredo ahead of both Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres. His Portuguese counterpart Paulo Bento also made one change, his first after naming the same side for their six previous competitive fixtures. Helder Postiga was forced to begin among the substitutes with Hugo Almeida deputizing in his stead. Portugal set about disrupting Spain's rhythm immediately by pressing its opponents high up the pitch. It worked for the opening few minutes as La ...
Portugal 0-0 Spain (2-4 pens) Analysis Donbass Arena, Donetsk MATCH IN A SENTENCE: Spain progressed to their third successive major final after beating Portugal on penalties following 120 minutes in which the reigning world and European champions, while still carrying the balance of play, were admirably pushed to the limit by their Iberian rivals. KEY MOMENT: Cesc Fabregas scored the decisive penalty in Donetsk following Bruno Alves’ miss. Alves, who was initially replaced as the third penalty-taker by Nani, was astonishingly permitted to walk back to the spot for Portugal’s fourth attempt while Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo watched on in disbelief. Alves was never going to score—these contests are a test of bottle and he exuded none of it—and after his shot hit the woodwork the door was open for Fabregas to apply the coup de grace. The Barcelona playmaker made no mistake—his effort deflecting into the goal off the inside of the left post . It’s also worth remembering that it was Fabreg ...

Donbass-Arena's been never good for Ukrainian national football team despite the fact it's an ultra-modern arena.Strategically,it was an awfull mistake to schedule even a single match for national team there.Ukraine would play a way better in any other Ukrainian stadium but Donbass-Arena.However,France is France. This team is very strong. And,so far,France showed itself as a one of the main challengers to win Euro-2012.So,lost to France. We'll see the match with England. And,awfully,it's again scheduled on Donbass-Arena. :-))) I'm wondering if some particular Ukranian officials do not like national team so the calendar seems akward in its very interests. It might be some political/social agenda reaching its hands up to the sport these days. But,anyway,go Ukraine! :-)))
Ukraine 0-0 France HT in Donetsk. Both sides have had chances since the restart but it remains goalless at the Donbass Arena
The sky over the Donbass Arena in Donetsk makes me think of The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Ukraine-France will restart at 19.00 CET at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk
The Euro 2012 Group D clash between Ukraine and France has been suspended due to a lightning storm in Donetsk. T he game was only four minutes old when referee Bjorn Kuipers withdraw the players from the pitch after the rain lashed down on the park from the moment that the players arrived on the Donbass Arena surface. Goal.com’s James Goldman said of the scene inside the stadium: “A magnificent stadium this might be but us journos have just spotted one major design flaw. “As the players came out onto the pitch they were met with an enormous clap of thunder and then the heavens opened. “The rain has fallen at an incredible rate and there is already surface water on this pitch, and is sweeping into the press box where we have taken cover under plastic sheets.” If the game cannot be restarted at any point today, then it will be rescheduled for tomorrow.
Weather in Donetsk easing apparently but lightning still visible above Donbass Arena. No decision before 19:00 CET (18:00 BST) 0-0
Imagine Derby County fans who were at Ewood Park 2007/08 were at the Donbass Arena now
It cost £250m to build the Donbass Arena in Donetsk. Surely they could have put a roof on at that price. Soaked.

Roy mulls over selection issues Jun 13, 2012 At one point during the second-half of Monday's 1-1 draw with France, Scott Parker was bellowing "I'm okay" at the dug-out, even though it was obvious the Tottenham man had hit a physical wall. Given Parker's lack of match sharpness following his late season Achilles problem and the enormous effort required to subdue France's invention in strength-sapping 31 degree heat, it was hardly a surprise he should succumb. At 31, Parker is not in the first flush of youth and his central midfield partner Steven Gerrard is a year older. Clearly, it is a fact that cannot be ignored, even if Kiev later this week promises to be significantly cooler than it was in the Donbass Arena. However, after returning to England's Krakow HQ at 1.30am on Tuesday morning, and then undergoing a recovery session later in the day, England boss Hodgson realises after a battling display like yesterday's, telling someone they are dropped would not be a particularly easy task. "I will have to as ...
Roy Hodgson gives rallying lectures, rather than rallying cries, but he has some stirring final words planned for his players before they step out at into the magnificent Donbass Arena to face the daunting, smooth-moving French on Monday night.

The anthems ring out at Donbass Arena (I make Scott Parker the loudest) - follow the game here:
This afternoons Footy at The Bear As if you didn't know!!! France v England (Kick-off 5.00pm). Adrian Chiles presents coverage of the opening clash in Group D from the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, Ukraine. England last appeared at a European Championship in 2004, when they were also drawn alongside this evening's opponents in the group stage. While both teams progressed to the knockout phase, it was France who topped the table after all three matches had been played, thanks largely to their 2-1 victory over Sven-Goran Eriksson's men in the opening encounter in Lisbon. Frank Lampard's first-half header had looked to have given England all three points, but two goals by Zinedine Zidane in the closing minutes snatched a win for the French. Wayne Rooney became the second-youngest player to appear in a European Championship when selected for that match, but recently appointed manager Roy Hodgson will have to make do without his services in this clash, following the Manchester United star's red card in the final g ...
