As bands of tiny ghosts and goblins trek through your neighborhood in search of Halloween treats, be sure to crank your radio up to full volume and share Anton Rubinstein's The Demon with your masked marauders. Sometimes referred to as a "Russian Faust," Rubinstein's opera had its premiere at Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater on January 25, 1875. The founder of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Anton was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein, who founded the Moscow Conservatory. As a pianist, Anton ranks among the greatest 19th-century keyboard virtuosi. A prolific composer, he wrote five piano concerti, six symphonies, and 20 operas. During the Prologue (a storm in the Caucasian mountains), a chorus of evil spirits calls upon the Demon (bass-baritone Anatoly Lochak) to destroy the beauty of God's creation. A human with satanic traits, the Demon sings of his hatred for the universe and rejects an Angel's (mezzo-soprano Alison Browner) plea for him to reconcile with Heaven. As Act I open ...

MET OPERA - Un Ballo IN MASCHERA Un Ballo in Maschera - Giuseppe Verdi – 12 & 13 January (Approximate running time: 200 minutes) Conductor: Fabio Luisi Production: David Alden Set Designer: Paul Steinberg Costume Designer: Brigitte Reiffenstuel Lighting Designer: Adam Silverman Choreographer: Maxine Braham Cast: Sondra Radvanovsky (Amelia), Kathleen Kim (Oscar), Stephanie Blythe (Ulrica), Marcelo Álvarez (Gustavo III), Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Anckarström) Trailer: vivid drama of jealousy and vengeance will be seen in a new production by acclaimed opera director David Alden, returning to the Met for the first time in more than 20 years. Fabio Luisi conducts his first Met performances of the opera, which stars Sondra Radvanovsky in her Met role debut as Amelia, Marcelo Álvarez as Gustavo III, Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Anckarström, Stephanie Blythe as the fortuneteller Ulrica, and Kathleen Kim as the page Oscar. Alden, whose production is set in a dreamlike, early 20th-century Swedish environment, says that ...
Last Saturday, Dec. 8, was the first broadcast of the new Metropolitan Opera radio season: Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera ("A Masked Ball"). Been listening to the Met on radio since (gulp!) 1965-66, regularly since 1967. First opera I heard was Aida, also by Verdi and scheduled for broadcast this Saturday, Dec. 15. Back to Ballo: Marcelo Alvarez did well as King Gustavo, he has a real feel for the words. His lyric singing is exceptional, however I noticed he does not linger on high notes (not like Pavarotti in this role). He also ducked the high C in the 2nd act duet with the Amelia, the very excellent Sondra Radvanovsky -- what's with that? The baritone was Dmitri Hvorostovsky, in good voice but he took a long time to warm up. May have been under the weather, but he picked up steam in Act III during "Eri tu?" Prolonged and well-deserved applause for that one! Maestro Fabio Luisi conducted. He, too, refused to dawdle, although I like this opera to be more expansive in spots. Luisi sped things along a la Tos ...
The Metropolitan Opera returns for a new season with a new production of Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball), starring Sondra Radvanovsky, Marcelo Álvarez and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, kicking off the celebration of Verdi's 200th birthday! Margaret Juntwait returns as the series’ host for her ninth season, joined by commentator Ira Siff. At 1 o’clock (in Italian) on WVTF.

I'm looking for 1 ticket to see Dmitry Hvorostovsky concert at Wigmore Hall on 8th Sept: Please RT.
I am so upset! I did not shed a tear! I so wanted to cry to this tragic opera! What a waste of money! Am I so cold hearted? I don't think so! It is just this new and bold La Traviata production fails to convey the nuances and complexity of human emotions! I especially was totally stunned by Dmitri Hvorostovsky's portrait of Germont. He entered the stage with swagger lacking in dignity and compassion, then he sang without pleading tone and tenderness! So many times I just felt that the singers were singing past each other- not exchanging emotions! Ten years ago, after I saw Franco Zeffirelli's La Traviata, I wept and came out humming" Sempre Libera"! How amazing! Same music, but totally different experience!
Delos offers Dmitri a hearty round of Congratulations! He received the Award last night!
Congratulations to the recipients of the 2012 Dmitri Peter Mattei, Karita Mattila, Peter Sellars & Anja Silja!
Tonight at the MET Verdi's La Traviata. Matthew Polenzani played Alfredo. Dmitri Hvorostovsky played Alfredo's father, and Natalie Dessay played Violetta. It is the first time I have seen Dessay in the lead role in this opera. I last saw her play the lead in Lucia di Lammermoor. She is definitely the finest operatic actress.
