Deadbeats Jan 14, 2013 | By ThinkProgress War Room It’s Time for Congress to Pay Its Bills In their never-ending quest to destroy entitlements and slash the social safety net, Republicans are once again willing to risk the entire U.S. economy in order to advance their ideological agenda — an agenda overwhelmingly rejected by voters in last year’s elections. Last time Republicans took the economy hostage, the summer of 2011, Speaker Boehner made clear that he understood the implications of a national default: Boehner said it would mean “financial disaster” for the global economy if Congress were unable to come to a deal to raise the debt ceiling this spring. “That would be a financial disaster, not only for us, but for the worldwide economy,” Boehner said on “Fox News Sunday” of the risk of default. “I don’t think it’s a question that’s even on the table.” Still, rank-and-file Republicans and even a top member of the House Republican leadership are now talking openly about shutt ...

DISASTERS: Asia’s 2012 figures and trends - why we care so much about disaster risk reduction.
George Osborne struts around the European stage as if he was one of the greatest chancellors in modern history, but somehow failing to remember that in just two and a half short years he has now tanked the seventh largest economy three times on his watch. (would you believe some high street bookmakers are now taking bets on a fourth dip before we have even officially entered the third) But on planet George, population of one,he still feels that the likes of Germany will fall to their knees and beg him not to pull out his shining example of how a great economy should be run from the EU. In reality no one with a working brain and who can do their times table wants to listen to David Cameron or George Osborne giving them a lecture on European economics when their own house is in such a mess. So what we are seeing now from David Cameron and George Osborne are the return of the Bullingdon bully boy tactics, they are making threats by saying ''if you do not play the games we want to play, then we are taking our foo ...

ON THE ROAD TO FISICAL RESPONSIBILITY or is Obama ideology prevailing Jan 2, 2013. Who would have imagined fifty years ago we would have a government of zillions “characters” in government, which by the way has been referred to by others as “clowns, bozos and misfits” doing political theater. It appears the ideology of “more taxes and new spending” will surface and drown Fiscal Responsibility when “the fat lady sings.” The past few days has been like sitting in the demist’ chair waiting for a rotten wisdom tooth to be pulled and just before the definiteness of extraction the dentist administers a shot of pain relief. Who among us has a ten year budget? Many wise people do have long range plans however it is not wise to have a ten year budget and use it up the first couple years. Syria and climate change,a report from the west... affected by the lack of rainfall was the country’s northeast, which accounts for 75 percent of total wheat production in Syria. The 2011 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction notes that since the start of the drought, close to 75 percent of agriculture-dependent households in the northeast have suffered total crop failure. Prior to the drought, Syria’s agriculture sector accounted for 40 percent of the country’s workforce and 25 percent of gross domestic product. Some 2–3 million people have been pushed into extreme poverty by a combination of lack of crop income and the need to sell livestock at 60–70 percent below cost. Syria’s livestock herd has been decimated from 21 million to an estimated 14–16 million. This calamity is the result of a number of factors. Climate change is joined by resource mismanagement, including the overexploitation of groundwater (due to subsidies for water-thirsty crops such as cotton and wheat), inef ...
Food for thought, If the country went into a tail spin over the alleged housing market crash created to drive the price of precious metals; then what is it going to do when the credit card balloon pops? By-the-way, wasn't the banks that convinced congress that instead of increasing wages and fixed income checks that they would issue credit cards so consumers could purchase big ticket items and spread the payments out so they could afford them to avoid inflation? Seemed like a good idea (like marks-ism) until they revealed the high interest rates and exclusionary rules (so called bad credit ratings and risk reduction in lending practices) which exclude the very people that need the help the most to consolidate or refi. Al Capone and the other crime organizations brought down for loan sharking and tax evasion are probably spinning in their graves. Simple math the 4 bailouts if one out of the four would have been used to bail out the consumer then the consumer would have bailed out the industry. They couldn' ...

IMPROVING DISASTER MANAGEMENT STRATEGY RESULTS... Speaking at the 7th Annual Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management held recently in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Ambassador Applewhaite recommended: vulnerability assessment and Mainstreaming Risk Management into sectoral and overall development planning; developing ‘disaster knowledgeable’ communities; focusing on Disaster Risk Reduction in the Education System at all levels; enhancing systems through use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs); engaging the Private Sector; and engaging Regional Champions as areas for increased focus. The Deputy Secretary-General said that the Caribbean experience illustrated how disasters over time spread through an economy, affecting a country’s output, its consumption of goods and services, the balance of payments and government budget all of which ultimately affected economic growth, income distribution and the level of poverty.

TOTT: Talk of the Town Typhoon Pablo Devastates Visayas and Mindanao ~amidst early warning from various Disaster Risk Reduction and Management council, still Typhoon Pablo struck the province of Visayas and Mindanao as it unfurls its deadly winds which brought heavy rains, flashfloods, landslides, mudslides and multiple casualties. As of today, the typhoon has killed nearly 300 people, and is still increasing, with a huge number of injured residents and missing people. Isolated barangays, especially in Compostella Valley, were the concern for the relief goods and rescue operations. Sadly, experts concluded that a lot of the damages brought to agricultural, commercial, and domestic properties were cause by the flood and landslides which caused of illegal logging and small scale mining in the mountains of Visayas and Mindanao. Death toll caused by the greediness of people who hunger for wealth, but feed on the blood of their fellowmen.

So says a recent report of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), titled “City Resilience in Africa: A Ten Essentials Pilot.” The office recently unveiled the 64-page report in Dakar, Senegal, at the Africities Summit, where almost 5,000 delegates representing African governments and their development partners from around the world are examining the impact of urbanization, among other settlement issues.
