![]() There are many moments in life that we hold dear. Moments that make us feel a certain way, take us back to a specific place in time and then there are those moments that define our very existence. When I was in university I remember having a very in depth conversation with a mentor of mine one night. While discussing my past and asking me questions about what I wanted my future to look like out came one of the most significant bundle of words that would end up, to this day, running through my mind in moments of keeping my integrity, honor and faith. "Love will conquer your weeping and broken soul once you decide to be a slave to the freedom in which Christ gives to you gracefully. Let Christ fight your battles by submitting to him with humility, sacrifice and patience from within." WORDS. Definition: A sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing, that symbolizes and communicates a meaning. There are over 130 words in scripture that talks about the ...

![]() John 21:15-19 In this morning’s gospel, Christ’s time on earth is rapidly running out. He has much to do and little time to do it. He knows that he’s leaving very extraordinary things to be done by some very ordinary people. And what are those ordinary people doing? They’re out fishing. It’s what they know best. Jesus makes a humble, but very powerful entrance. Like any casual passerby, he asks how the fishing is going. And when they tell him they’ve caught nothing, he tells them exactly where to find the fish. They do what he tells them and they are swamped with fish. And at that moment they recognize the helpful stranger with nature at his command. It is the risen Christ. What better way to get a fisherman’s attention, than to tip him off on how to land a bumper catch? Jesus does and they do. And now that he’s broken the ice, Jesus gets down to business. Job one is to get Peter back on the leadership track. Back when the going got tough, Peter had denied Jesus three times. Now Jesus give ...

![]() Following WW II most Japanese Shinto communities saw their loss of the war as a defeat for their religion of Shintoism. Birth rates radically declined and the rate of the birth of females declined even more. This rare phenomenon was also seen in the southern Pacific islands invaded and subjugated by the Japanese Imperial Army. Anthropologists studying this unusual phenomenon attributed the decline of births in general and of female births to a "national or community loss of hope" that they used to have in their religion. As orthodox Christian beliefs and practices have been abandoned in the western nations births have declined due to self-imposed abortion genocide attributed to their national apostasy understood as their voluntary loss of hope in Christ Jesus. Abortion is a radical form of self-hatred by a race of people who have lost their spiritual hope. It is the apex of spiritual apostasy. It is to be expected that a people with such a loss of spiritual hope would adopt a totalitarian form of gove ...
![]() Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Cheap Grace Bonhoeffer was born in Breslau (German) on February 4th, 1906, the son of a university professor and leading authority on psychiatry and neurology, but from the age of 12 lived in Berlin. At the age of seventeen he entered Tubingen University and a year later attended courses at Berlin University, and sat at the feet of Adolf von Harnack, and other biblical scholars. He also attended and became an outstanding student at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He because a lecturer in Systematic Theology in Berlin University. Bonhoeffer was one of the few who quickly understood, even before Hitler came to power, that National Socialism was a brutal attempt to make history without God and to found it on the strength of man alone. Therefore in 1933, when Hitler came to power, he abandoned his academic career. In February 1933 he denounced the political system which corrupted and grossly misled a nation and made the “Fuhrer” its idol and god. In October of 1933 he decid ...

Before I try to expound a bit more, here’s the original post… _ What if the hardships I'm going through right now are entirely within God's will? It's not very popular to talk about God allowing suffering in our lives, even though we just celebrated Easter(the events that took place three days before are too quickly forgotten). But let's consider it for a moment... What if there are legitimate needs that will remain unmet in my life because God won't meet them?Indeed, many are my woes, but what if focusing on them is missing the point? What if God allows these things to see if I will be faithful to Him in spite of them? To suffer needs and wants, persecutions and stresses, losses and hurts, and yet to remain faithful. Be I in Your Hand or under It ...

![]() When Jesus calls the individual to come and follow Him, it is a call to discipleship. A disciple is a loyal follower of Jesus; one who has had an authentic encounter with the Lord, and as a result subjects their total existence to the Will of God. The disciples leave behind their boats and nets, and follow Jesus, Matt. 4:18-22. Obedience to Christ's call, always results in a leaving behind, and a total commitment to the Lord. Responding to the call of discipleship is easier than living the life of a committed follower. A superficial response is marked by an absentia of living a committed life. Mark 8:34, "Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Interestingly the premise of Christ's call is not a guarantee of a life of glamour, and glitz; it is devoid of a promise of an avoidance of pain. The Christian's responsiveness to the call is a direct encounter with self-denial, self-crucifixion, and following Christ daily. Christ did not say if you become a Christi ...

![]() Today’s Word But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. James 1:22 NLT Today’s Thought Our relationship with Christ should be one defined by personal transformation. From day to day, we should be experiencing depth and growth in our understanding of God’s Word. God’s Word serves as a guide for our lives. I’ve been reading a book on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was brought up in a world rich in academia. He became an influential theologian. But what really separated Bonhoeffer from so many other religious folk of his time was that as he studied the Word of God, he also allowed the Word to transform him. He stood up against Hitler and defended the Jewish people as worthy of all efforts of Christendom. What an incredible example Bonhoeffer can be for us! You see, it’s one thing to read the Word and study it. And it’s something completely different to experience the impact of Christ within our own world to the point tha ...

![]() via JD Stone (thanks) It is true that Hitler and the Vatican seemed to each think they NEEDED each other (badly). The Church even more so, in some ways. Stalinist Soviet Communism was resurgent and expansive. The Church had been devastated in modern times, not just by scientists of the Galileo & Copernican style, but then by the protestant reformations, the Erasmian complicity, the political sabotage of the likes of NAPOLEON, and then GARIBALDI. With atheist, Communist Stalinism threatening the destruction of western civilization and an accompanying bloodbath (they had already done so in Russia), Hitler's naziism was almost a "last hope" -- the final bulwark or line of defense. No one can excuse what Hitler did. There can be no justification for the horrors Hitler caused. But yes, there is almost a sea-change of attitude from Pius eleven to Pius twelve.

![]() Now on a very serious issue that cannot afford to ignore! Dietrich Bonhoeffer at the height of Nazi German asked of German literature, "Do you know a work of literature written in the last, say, fifteen years that you think has any lasting value? I don't. It is partly idle chatter, partly propaganda, party self-pitying sentimentalism, but there is no insight, no ideas, no clarity, no substance and almost always the language is bad and constrained". I have been reminded of this quote as evidence has now increased that the Daily Mail and Times of Zambia have not reformed. They continue to be shamefully be one sided. When the murder occurred in Livingstone, the Daily Mail quickly run the headline on the website on 27th February - "UPND kill PF official”. It went on to scream further, "the United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres have killed a senior Patriotic Front (PF) official Harrison Chanda". It is an impatient, inattentive listening, that despises the brother and is only waiting for a chance to speak and thus get rid of the other person. This is no fulfillment of our obligation, and it is certain that here too our attitude toward our brother only reflects our relationship to God. It is little wonder that we are no longer capable of the greatest service of listening that God has committed to us, that of hearing our brother's confession, if we refuse to give ear to our brother on lesser subjects. Secular education today is aware that often a person can be helped merely by having someone who will listen to him seriously, and upon this insight it has constructed its own soul therapy, which has attracted great numbers of people, including Christians. But Christians have forgotten that the ministry of listening has been committed to them by Him who is Himself the great listener and whose ...

We bring the homeless food and clothing, but most importantly we build relationship with them and bring them the Word of God, both corporately and personally. A number of churches have seen what we are doing and have offered their considerable support to help serve these people that God so dearly loves. What a blessing to have churches and church leaders come along side to help those who have nothing to eat, who haven’t enough clothing to ward off the cold, who have no one to trust, nor a church fellowship to call their own. To raise the question whether we are here concerned already with a human being or not is merely to confuse the issue. The simple fact is that God certainly intended to create a human being and that this nascent human being has been deliberately deprived of his life. And this is nothing but murder. A great many different motives may lead to an action of this kind; indeed in cases where it is an act of despair, performed in circumstances of extreme human or economic destitution and misery, the guilt may often lie rather with the community than with the individual. Precisely in this connection money may conceal many a wanton deed, while the poor man’s more reluctant lapse may far more easily be disclosed. They enter the community of Christians with their demands set up by their own law, and judge one another and God accordingly. It is not we who build. Christ builds the church. Whoever is mindful to build the church is surely well on the way to destroying it, for he will build a temple to idols without wishing or knowing it. We must confess he builds. But that is only possible if we are visible members of the Church. The antithesis between the world and the Church must be borne out in the world. That was the purpose of the incarnation. The world holds few if any rewards for those who remain angrily focused upon the past. Still, the act of forgiveness is difficult. Being frail, fallible, imperfect human beings, most of us are quick to anger, quick to blame, slow to forgive, and even slower to forget. Yet as Christians, we are commanded to forgive others, just as we, too, have been forgiven. If there exists even one person - alive or dead - against whom you hold bitter feelings, it's time to forgive. Or, if you are embittered against yourself for some past mistake or shortcoming, it's finally time to forgive yourself and move on. Hatred, bitterness, and regret are not part of God's plan for your life. Forgiveness is. "Give me such love for God and men as will blot out all hatred and bitterness." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer. ![]() Jean Vanier - Daily Thought Thursday 7 March 2013 "He who loves the brethren builds community (Dietrich Bonhoeffer)" Community means caring: caring for people. Dietrich Bonhoeffer says: "He who loves community destroys community; he who loves the brethren builds community." A community is not an abstract ideal. We are not striving for perfect community. Community is not an ideal; it is people. It is you and I. In community we are called to love people just as they are with their wounds and their gifts, not as we would want them to be. Community means giving them space, helping them to grow. It means also receiving from them so that we too can grow. It is giving each other freedom; it is giving each other trust; it is confirming but also challenging each other. We give dignity to each other by the way we listen to each other, in a spirit of trust and of dying to oneself so that the other may live, grow and give.=

Those who die without Jesus will experience a horrifying tragedy. Of course, dying is not the real adventure. Death is merely the doorway to eternal life. The adventure is what comes after death-being in the presence of Christ. Just before he was hanged by the Nazis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer prayed aloud, "Oh, God, this is the end; but for me it is just the beginning." His trust in God's promises served him well in the face of death. We shouldn't glorify or romanticize death-Jesus didn't. He wept over it (John 11:35). For every beautiful story of people peacefully slipping into eternity, there are other stories of confused and shrunken people, wasting away mentally and physically, leaving behind exhausted, confused, and grief-stricken loved ones. I've often seen death close-up. Unless Christ returns in our lifetime, it's certain that my own death-and that o ...

The only ones who can wait are people who carry restlessness around with them." ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) The title of this article, in the context of the pain we endure for waiting upon the Lord, seems out of keeping with joy; with that blessedness we associate with a God who gives good things and gives with abundance. There is a divide between life; those who can wait and those who cannot. If we are true to ourselves we resonate with both ideas. Some things we have waited for, whilst others we could not wait. Blessing followed us for our waiting, but we made our own consequences for not. The truth is, not everyone can wait. Not everyone is prepared to endure what it takes to patiently distract oneself in the 'eternal' meantime between a promise and that promise's delivery. The difference is, does the propensity not to wait characterize us at the moment? These are always quite personal questions. ...

![]() "Cheap grace" is a complete misnomer. While I greatly respect Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life and stand for Christ, I flinch at his words: "Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline. Communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ." The reality is that a biblical understanding of forgiveness *gives birth" to repentance. Baptism (identifying with His death, burial & resurrection) *inspires* discipline. Communion with Christ *calls forth* heartfelt confession. True grace *stimulates a hunger* for discipleship. Without the cross and without Jesus Christ, grace would not be "cheap" grace. Rather, it would be no grace at all. The Incarnation is the conduit of Divine Grace. ![]() Again from Thom Shuman... who always has a way with words and with the Word. During Advent we 'prepare the way for God'... but here, Thom reflects on how God prepares the way for us. ![]() "The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps." Matthew 25:4 When we respond to Christ's invitation it is not a simple transaction. We don't "check the box" with a prayer once prayed or some water once applied. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said that when Jesus calls us he bids us to "Come and Die." We commit our all to Christ. As such the wise response to the gospel's invitation is to not only come but to come committed bringing our all, lamps AND oil and whatever else HE may require. This is NOT to earn the invitation we have already received but to thank Him and properly and fully respond to it.
