We saw your comments asking why it's called the Manson Trio. Bob Fosse imagined the Leading Player as some sort of charismatic cult leader similar to Charles Manson; the song-and-dance was created to be a juxtaposition to people being killed. (as recalled by Diane Paulus in Time Out New York).

['Pippin' Sees Profit on Broadway NEW YORK -- Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busiest periods on the Broadway calendar, but the holiday week was an especially bountiful one for Pippin, with grosses pushing the Tony-winning musical revival into profit. Lead producers Barry & Fran Weissler and Howard & Janet Kagan on Monday announced that the hit production, which was first seen at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., had recouped its $8.5 million capitalization costs as of Sunday Dec. 1. PHOTOS: Broadway Musicals That Have Sung Their Way to the Big Screen The circus-themed take on Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson's musical won four Tony Awards -- for best musical revival, director Diane Paulus, featured actress Andrea Martin and lead actress Patina Miller for her gender-flipping interpretation of the Leading Player, a role made famous by Ben Vereen. The original 1972 production of Pippin, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, ran for almost five years. The revival opened April 25 ...

"Thank YOU for all the successes of last season, and now on to 2013-2014!" -Diane Paulus
I went to Lincoln Center's annual Midsummer Night's Swing with live music last night. This is their 25th season. Beth and I always have loved this event which we started attending back in the late 1990's. Last night it was Salsa and the place rocked! Pure joy - Night before saw PIPIIN for the 2nd time. It is so well put together and entertaining. Bravo Chet Walker, Diane Paulus and cast! So much talent went into the production and is up on that stage! Yes! Put these both on your to do and must see lists!
Watched the Tony Awards last night almost as soon as I got home. Wow. What an inspiring show. I'd say this year was pretty much dominated by women, many of them women of color, and freaks (YEAH, Cindy Lauper, AND Pippin is a circus for goodness sake!) I'm so very pleased, and enamored with all these inspiring women, most notably Pippin's director Diane Paulus. (...and Pam MacKinnon, Andrea Martin, Cicely Tyson, Judith Light, Patina Miller...). Awesomeness.
Thrilled by the Tony Award honors to two of the Drama League Directors Project's finest alums-- Pam MacKinnon & Diane Paulus! Congratulations to you both!!
Congratulations to ART, the cast and crew of Pippin, and especially Diane Paulus, whose speech was truly amazing. All of us at UpStairs are so proud of you all!
Loving Ladies Night at the Tony Awards!! [Congrats to winning directors Diane Paulus and Pam MacKinnon, and the incomparable Cyndi Lauper for her Kinky Boots music & lyrics!] We'll be celebrating the amazing nominees and winners all month long, starting with "Sex Is In The Heel" from Kinky Boots in tonight's class. And new students can get $5 of their first Broadway Bodies class through July 31st!! Just mention "Pride Offer" at class check-in. Get your KINK on starting at 7.
Never thought the day would come . Both Best Director Tony's went to women. Pam MacKinnon for Virginia Wolfe and Diane Paulus for Pippin. We've come a long way baby.
The Tony Awards were so historic last night. The ladies were representin. Cyndi Lauper became the first women to ever win Best Score. Pam Mckinnon and Diane Paulus won for Best Director of a Play and Best Director of Musical respectively. Cicely Tyson became the oldest Lead Actress in a Play ever to win a TONY! Billy Porter & Patina Miller became the 3rd African-Americans to win Best Lead Actor & Best Lead Actress In A Musical in the same year! The whole night was incredible and I got to share it with my Best Friends surrounded by a room full of Theatre Professionals and Theatre Lovers! Check out my full play-by-play report on thatgirl006.blogspot.com on Wednesday!
The big winners at the 67th Annual Tony Awards included Kinky Boots, which took home a total of six awards, including Best Musical, as well as Pippin, the cirque-inspired musical re-envisioned by Diane Paulus, and Matilda, the inventive and dark children's musical, which each took home four Tonys. I don't watch the Tonys (I followed along via newsfeeds), but I am pretty stoked that two women took the top directing honors this year. Diane Paulus, whose work is a constant inspiration, and Pam McKinnon who directs amazing work at regional theaters on the west coast regularly (my fave Shakespeare Santa Cruz included!). Here's to more women in the director's chair very soon!
Such a wonderful evening of the Tony's and recognizing the brilliance of women directors! Many congratulations to Pam MacKinnon and Diane Paulus. Also to the glorious Andrea Martin...I can't wait to see Pippin!! Three cheers for the ladies!
World take note. . . We tend to think of New York as the theater capitol of the world because, after all, people come to New York FOR the theater. But did you notice that the best shows winning last night were developed in the Regional World . . . . Our shows don't gestate in NY; they develop, are born and raised, nurtured and given succor elsewhere before they emigrate from places like Boston (ART), Chicago (Steppenwolf), Princeton (MCCarter). The theaters that midwifed those plays that were on the stage at Radio City last night -- and nurtured the extraordinary visions of great directors like Pam MacKinnon and Diane Paulus -- are able to illuminate great shows because people across the country are hungry for good theater. Let's hear it for the REGIONALS, big and small, that raise our playwrights' best (and worst) babies and preserve our civilization.
Tonys from Maine with a dear feminist man Sam Eliot who enjoyed my cheering of Pam MacKinnon and Diane Paulus and composer Cyndi Lauper and the other female noms in set and other design. He also liked it every time I'd point and say that's a friend of mine, and him and her and her and him including those brilliant Fellows of mine Justin Paul and Benj Pasek.
My son has now worked for, and with, current Tony Award winners...Best Direction of a Musical, Diane Paulus, Pippin (The Donkey Show and Prometheus Bound) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical, Gabriel Ebert, Matilda the Musical (Prometheus Bound)...I am so appreciative of their influence on him...one day Bart...one day...and I bet, sooner than later!!
A lot of good last night: Patina Miller, Dennis Kelly, Courtney B Vance, Ming Cho Lee, BIlly Porter, Cicely Tyson, Leon Rothenberg, Judith Light, Tracey Letts, Hugh Vanstone, Andrea Martin... But my personal bias is the message of acknowledging Diane Paulus & Pam McKinnon. Fantastic to not see dudes up there, again.
I worked through the Tonys but YAY Pam MacKinnon and Diane Paulus and lady directors in general!
I know you've been wondering, "Where is Wade tonight and his witty comments about the Tony Awards?" No? Oh well, here are my thoughts on tonight's ceremony anyways. TONY SPOILER ALERT! 1. Neil Patrick Harris is the perfect host and an all-around entertainer. Too bad I hate that terrible sitcom he's on. 2. Person least amused to be the butt of jokes: Mike Tyson and his wife? GF? They were not amused. 3. That was one *** of an opening number. 4. Matilda's performance made me anxious to see it. 5. How the *** did Bring It On get nominated for Best Musical? 6. Cinderella has lovely costumes and performances, but that book is awful. 7. Let's hear it for the women directors!!! Diane Paulus is much deserving after three fantastic productions in a row: Hair, Porgy and Bess, and Pippin. 8. The nominee from Motown nominated for Best Featured Actor actually pursed his lips to the camera. I hate that! I'm glad he lost for that reason alone. 9. I love Jane Lynch. Not enough to see Annie again. 10. Steven van Zandt i . ...
Pam MacKinnon, Diane Paulus, Chris Durang, and Tracy Letts. Pretty much some of my favorite artists in theater. Congrats to all of you!

Women directors win in both categories! Congratulations to two visionary women: Diane Paulus and Pam MacKinnon!
A big shout out to Diane Paulus & Pam MacKinnon as it was two for two with female stage directors receiving Tonys tonight!
Pam MacKinnon and Diane Paulus! ! WOHO! Yes, little girl in small town USA, you CAN be a tony-award winning director when you grow up!
And it's a Tony's directors' sweep for Drama League alums Diane Paulus and Pam MacKinnon...congratulations, ladies!!
Okay, forget what I just said. Diane Paulus and Pam MacKinnon!!! Female directors for the win!!!
I'm pulling for George C. Wolfe, Diane Paulus, and the producing teams of Kinky Boots, Pippin, & The Trip to the Bountiful..
Gary Barlow signs up for Finding Neverland musical Singer-songwriter Gary Barlow has signed up to co-write the score for Harvey Weinstein's Finding Neverland musical, which still has its sights set on the West End, despite receiving mixed reviews on its first outing last year. The musical, based on the film of the same name, focuses on the personal life of Peter Pan author JM Barrie, and received its world premiere at the Leicester Curve in October 2012. Producer Weinstein had reportedly hoped to transfer the production into the West End this year. But he has now brought a host of new personnel to make changes to the musical and its production. While Barlow will join composers Scott Frankel and Michael Koire, This House playwright James Graham has been hired to edit the musical's book. Rob Ashford, currently co-directing Macbeth with Kenneth Branagh for the Manchester international festival, is already committed to several productions next year and will be replaced by the US director Diane Paulus, whose c ...

Knowing Diane Paulus… yeah, just wait a bit. Only a matter of time.
Diane Paulus. She's no Fosse. Or Jerry Zaks, for that matter.
I think Diane Paulus is consciously developing Broadway bound work.
Looks like Diane Paulus revival of "Pippin" will go to B'way in spring, its first return since Fosse run ended in '77.
Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson's dark, coming-of-age musical Pippin takes on new life in a fresh production staged by Tony Award nominee Diane Paulus that begins previews Dec. 5 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA. Matthew James Thomas stars in the title role.
Staying atop what’s called a “rolling globe” offers a handy metaphor for the balancing act that Diane Paulus is attempting with her circus-themed ART production of “Pippin,” much as she did with her Tony Award-winning revivals, “Hair” and “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.” She has to honor the 1972 Br...
