I was not surprised when former Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA), who lost by 8 points to the wonderful Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in Nov., refused to run for John Kerry's open seat. But I figured it was because he was looking at a gubanatorial race when Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) is term limited out. But, today, he joined Fox News, which pretty much guarantees he's not running for MA governor, either. Have Republicans given up on Mass. completely--like Democrats on Idaho or Kansas?
STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, FEB. 1, 2013….Punditry this week required a Rubik's Cube-like mastery of the election landscape, an ability to see three steps ahead with every development having an equal and corresponding impact somewhere else. Still, not all of the implications were immediately clear. Confirmed and sworn-in this week as U.S. secretary of state, John Kerry made what his own staff described as a "return" to Massachusetts to thank those who have helped and supported him throughout his career from Middlesex County prosecutor and lieutenant governor to the senior senator from Massachusetts. But perhaps more importantly, Kerry's official exit from the U.S. Senate started the clock on the special election to take his place in Washington, a job Congressman Stephen Lynch finally admitting to wanting and one Scott Brown admitted to not having the stomach to try for again. In the meantime, Gov. Deval Patrick found a job for his close friend and former Chief Of Staff William "Mo" Cowan, who will hold down Ke ...
HOUSE of Representatives to COWAN: NO CAMPAIGNING PLEASE The Massachusetts House sent a message Thursday to interim U.S. Sen. William “Mo” Cowan. Adopting a non-binding resolution that states its preference without carrying the force of law, the House told Cowan to stay out of the campaign to fill the seat he will hold until the June 25 special election. The resolution, adopted at the tail end of a long but lightly attended informal session, states that the “Massachusetts House of Representatives strongly discourages a senator who takes office as a result of a gubernatorial appointment from becoming a candidate or endorsing any candidate in the special election that immediately follows such an appointment." Gov. Deval Patrick on Wednesday named his former Chief Of Staff and legal counsel to fill the Senate seat that John Kerry is giving up to become U.S. Secretary of State. Reps. Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey are prepared to square off in the Democratic primary, while former Sen. Scott Brown is ex ...
Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts has picked William Cowan, a longtime friend, to serve until a voters decide who will permanently replace John Kerry.
MASSACHUSETTS — Gov. Deval Patrick (D) has named his replacement for John Kerry in the Senate now that the Senator has officially become Secretary of State.
Gov. Deval Patrick chooses his former Chief Of Staff Mo Cowan to fill the senate seat being vacated by John Kerry.
William ‘Mo’ Cowan Tapped for Senate, The Senate is slowly becoming more diverse. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick on Wednesday appointed William “Mo” Cowan to be the state’s next U.S. senator, succeeding John Kerry. Cowan, Patrick’s former Chief Of Staff, will hold the seat until a special election is conducted June 25. Cowan, 43, will become the Senate’s fifth black member ever—and it is the first time in history that two black senators will be serving at the same time. In his speech appointing Cowan, Patrick noted the new senator’s humble childhood, saying he is the “affirmation of the American dream.” Read More:
Is Mo Cowan the right choice for U.S. Sen. John Kerry's replacement?
Barney Frank NOT the temporary fill-in for John Kerry seat. MSNBC's Kenneth O'Donnell makes complete fool of himself.
Deval Patrick picks a brother to fill John Kerry's seat.MO money Cowan. Nice, what a great country.
January 30, 2013…. William "Mo" Cowan, the governor's former Chief Of Staff and one-time chief legal counsel, has been chosen by Governor Deval Patrick to become the state's interim United States Senator, temporarily replacing John Kerry who was confirmed Tuesday as the country's next Secretary of State. Cowan is a confidant and long-time advisor, who has been at Patrick’s side for major policy battles on Beacon Hill in recent years. Cowan announced in November that he planned to resign as Chief Of Staff this month to return to the private sector. Though he stepped aside the first week in January for new Chief Of Staff Brendan Ryan to take over, Cowan has remained on in the administration as a Senior Advisor to the Governor and planned to stay on through the month of January to help with the release and rollout of the governor's budget. Patrick formally announced Cowan at an 11 a.m. press conference in his office. When Cowan takes the oath of office, he will become the first African-American senator f ...
The Associated Press ✔ Mass. governor to name ex-aide Cowan to fill John Kerry's seat on interim basis, says person with knowledge of situation.
Governor Deval Patrick will reveal his choice to fill John Kerry's Senate seat Wednesday until a special election is held in June.
Deval Patrick selects Mo Cowan as a place holder for John Kerry's seat. Cowan is Patrick's Chief Of Staff. Of some interest, this means that this will be the first time in our country's history that we have had two black Senators at the same time.--Dave.
MA Governor Deval Patrick announces interim senate appointment to replace John Kerry: Mo Cowan. Who? Chief Of Staff for Patrick. It's until the June 25th special election. I was hoping for Barney Frank but FINE, JUST FINE, DON'T LISTEN TO ME! 2nd African-American senator in MA history. Quick, who was the first w/o looking? Sen Cowan says he has no interest in running in the special election.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick will name lawyer William Cowen as John Kerry's replacement in the US Senate. Cowen will be the first black senator from Mass. since 1979. He will be the SECOND African American currently serving in the senate, joining Republican Tim Scott of SC, who was ALSO appointed to office. Who else is shocked by this?
So Deval Patrick (a black guy) nominated his Ex Chief Of Staff (Mo Cowen), a black guy, to serve as Senator in the place of John Kerry. So black folks are saying why not Barney Frank? I say, let him enjoy his retirement! This is a 6 month puppet appointment serving at the interest of the Governor until an election can take place. My argument is why aren't black folks getting mad when qualified black candidates are passed over by white governors? UGH, there goes that vision of the post racial america Obama dreamed we were in.
Barney Frank publicly asked the Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick for the Senate seat held by John Kerry. (Kerry, of course, is stepping down to run the State Department.) But today it appears that Frank has been passed over. CBS Boston is reporting that 'Gov. Patrick announces Mo Cowan as inte...
Deval Patrick, Gov of MA, to announce fill in for John Kerry's Senate seat. (Fingers crossed for Barney Frank!)
Boston friend just texted me that in about 2 hrs Deval Patrick is appointing Mo Cowan for the interim to hold John Kerry's seat til next election.
5 reasons why the only guy openly campaigning to succeed John Kerry will probably be snubbed today
Tonight's question: it seems that some people want one more mission for Barney Frank before he goes into retirement. They want him to be interim Senator. One will need to be appointed to replace John Kerry until a special election is held. There is a drive going for Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint Barney Frank as interim Senator. Would you support this move?
Oh Lord, please help us. We cannot bear another round of this guy. This is beyond belief. I think I am going to go toss my cookies. Washington – Barney Frank just can't seem to stay away from Congress. One day after retiring as a 16-term Democratic representative from Massachusetts, Frank announced that he had asked Gov. Deval Patrick to send him back to D.C. – this time as in interim senator to fill the seat of Sen. John Kerry, who was nominated for secretary of state. That doesn’t mean the colorful congressman will get the gig, though. Patrick says that while Frank would make a “great” interim senator, it’s not a done deal and that he hasn't made his final decision yet.
I wish Ben Affleck would run for John Kerry's Senate seat in Massachusetts. Elizabeth Warren + Ben Affleck would be a stellar team. Ben's a good Dem!
Elizabeth Warren says Barney Frank would be an "extraordinary" interim senator to fill John Kerry's seat. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell just endorsed the petition to MA Gov. Deval Patrick urging that appointment. Join thousands of others in signing the petition -- click here!
Ed Markey for Senate--one of the few politicians gutsy enough to speak truth to power. (I include Bernie Sanders in this list). Hope all my Mass. family and friends will elect him to replace John Kerry. And if Deval Patrick is a smart guy he will appoint Barney Frank to fill in as interim. Sometimes I really miss living in a true blue state.
Barney Frank, the Insensitive Bully of the Senate. Barney Frank in the Senate? Please, Gov. Patrick, throw him in that briar patch. The retiring Massachusetts House member (a description of his job status, never his personality) said Friday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that he’d like to fill in for a few months until the special election to succeed Secretary of State nominee John Kerry in the Senate. You could practically hear the whoops reverberating around Capitol Hill. By Frank’s own account, Gov. Deval Patrick was noncommittal when Frank told him he’d like to serve as the state’s interim senator. But a political junkie can dream, right? In the best of all possible worlds, Frank would bring his rudely liberal, unadulterated self to the Senate and resist the urge to buckle under to awe. It would be a tragic waste of his few months if he turned into Al Franken – that is, left all vestiges of his conoclasm at the door of the august upper chamber. If Frank makes it to the Senate, perhaps Majority Lead ...
Frank, speaking today on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” said he told Gov. Deval Patrick he wants to be interim senator when Sen. John Kerry is named secretary of state.
Barney Frank admitted this morning on MSNBC that he has asked Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to pick him to replace John Kerry in the Senate: Frank suggested he wants the seat so that he can fight for an increased debt ceiling in the Senate. He had previously said he had no interest in fillin...
I think Gov. Deval Patrick would be cool to take John Kerry's open senate seat. If not him, Scott Brown just became the luckiest guy ever.
Gov. Deval Patrick wants the next interim senator to pledge not to run in the upcoming special election — adding he expects to name someone to the temporary spot “pretty quickly” after U.S. Sen. John Kerry is confirmed as Secretary of State by the Senate. featured in NBC s Science of Love
Ted Kennedy widow, Vicki, being considered by Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick to replace Sen. John Kerry if chosen by Obama 2 become Sec. of State.
Nov 13, 2012 12:31 AM EST The Washington Post “President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus. Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with the transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.” In my personal opinion, this would prove to be a terrible move for President Obama to appoint Senator Kerry! Why? In November 16, 2012 Wall Street Journal, Sen. John Kerry, Democrat Massachusetts was mentioned as a possible contender. If Sen. Kerry is elevated to Secretary of State or even to Secretary of Defense guess what? Massachusetts state law requires the appointment of an interim senator by Gov. Deval Patrick and force a special U.S. Senate election. If Sen ...
Those who are not happy about the possible idea of Massachusetts United States Sentor John Kerry joining the Obama Administration because they think that the people of Massachusetts are suffering from election saturation ought to suggest that anyone who elects to seek the seat in the advent of John Kerry being chosen to join the Obama Administration be in a position where they are not giving up an elective seat which would have to be filled by yet another special election. Governor Deval Patrick would be one good choice for the Democrats because he would be replaced in the governorship by the Lt. Gov. and the Lt. Gov's. vacated seat would not have to be filled until the next regular election. There would still the interm seat to fill which is where I would come in... which might be enough to get Senator Kerry to reconsider everything.
Susan Rice would make an excellent Sect of State, so would John Kerry. If Kerry was confirmed, Deval Patrick would make a great Senator
Elizabeth Warren as Senator, Deval Patrick as Attorney General, and John Kerry as Secretary of Defense?
How this for size?John Kerry at State Dept.,John Mccain at Defense Dept., and Deval Patrick to Senate.
If John Kerry becomes next Secretary of State, does Deval Patrick run for Senate against Scott Brown?
Here's a thought: If John Kerry goes to the cabinet, will Deval Patrick run for Senate in his place? Hm.
Deval Patrick on the SHORT LIST to replace Eric Holder for AG; but I'd rather see him replace John Kerry in the Senate, who is to replace Hilary Clinton.
You can expect to see John Kerry and Deval Patrick in the Bronco Bama cabinet in the near future -
Campaigning in today: Mitt, Ann, Tagg and Ben Romney. Kid Rock. John Kerry. Bob King (UAW president). Deval Patrick.
Just finished re-watching Bill Clinton & John Kerry. Deval Patrick and speeches at
Who did you think gave the best speech at the DNC in Charlotte? My list (in order) POTUS, FLOTUS, Biden, President Clinton, Deval Patrick, Julian Castro, Emanuel Cleaver, John Lewis, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, John Kerry, Sandra Fluke, Tammy Duckworth, Jennifer Granholm.
I'm really distressed that the DN Convention is over. I was glued to my TV all week. What amazing speakers. John Kerry blew me away...too bad he didn't have that conviction for himself when he ran. Michelle, Julian Castro, Deval Patrick, and many more. I'm stunned the Dems finally got it right - right message and great orchestration of the entire event.
One of the first indications that this Democratic Convention would be like no other was the fiery oration by Governor Deval Patrick and no other quotation captured his zeal and passion than this one. Governor Patrick lit a torch which was passed on to Michelle Obama, Sandra Fluke, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Jennifer Granholm, Joe Biden and on to our President. The party made a stunning and definitive case that there is one man who should be our President during the next four years. His name is Barack Obama.
I was a registered Republican in my uninformed youth; I changed party affiliation when George W. Bush was nominated in 2000 and have never looked back. After watching three days of incredible speeches by Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, Sister Simone Campbell, Deval Patrick, Corey Booker, John Kerry, Julián Castro, and many others, I realize just why I am a Democrat. I DO want to go forward, not backwards. I DO care about my fellow man, particularly those less fortunate than I. I DO want to be a part of the party of inclusion, the party of the many, the party of the diverse - not the party of the few. I am just bursting with pride and wish I could go vote right NOW!
Some observations on the Democratic National Convention, along with a prediction or two. Gabby Giffords. What an inspiration. I cry again just thinking about her delivering the Pledge tonight. How could that not move you to your very soul? And if it did not, I feel incredibly sorry for your sad and pathetic self. And seeing her with Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is one of our future presidents, prediction alert.Oh my. They are both huge heros and inspirations to me. What a gift that was to us all. John Kerry. Who knew? Where in the world was the real John Kerry when he was running for president? Michelle Obama. Wow. I am so proud to be an American woman and have her as our First Lady. Class, elegance, intelligence, accessible, sensible, Mom-In-Chief. Lucky us. Lucky President Obama. Bill Clinton. He is such a great man, flaws notwithstanding. He brings it and does not back down. And he does not care if you like it or not. Arithmetic! Maybe even I can embrace it now. Deval Patrick ...
