Status Update By Republican Sinn Féin Cuimhnigh linn Michael Devine ar an lá seo. Michael was born on May 26th 1954 in the Springtown camp- a former World War Two US Army base on the outskirts of Derry City. In 1960 the family moved to the Creggan area of the city. He was educated in the Holy Child primary school and St. Joseph's Secondary school. Upon leaving school he found employment in Austin's in the Diamond area of the city. When the British Army emerged on the streets of Derry in the wake of the battle of the bogside, 'Free Derry' was maintained by local people. Michael was among those defending the barricades, with the Creggan becoming a no-go area for Britain's forces of occupation. In July 1971 he joined the James Connolly Republican Club, and shortly afterwards he joined the Official IRA. The murder of two local residents by the British Army and the re-introduction of internment had resulted in an escalation of the level of resistance to British forces. The barricades at Free Derry were now b ...

Kick Off: 7.45pm, Friday 25th April   Four defeats on the bounce for UCD but it doesn’t get any easier for the students as they face a tough trip to the Brandywell on Friday night to face Derry City. Manager Aaron Callaghan is positive about his side’s chances of picking up a good result especially as his side have won the last two games between the sides at the Brandywell.   “After another good performance on Monday we will be hopeful of picking up a positive result against Derry. Over the last few years we have picked up some good results in the Brandywell and if we can start creating more chances in front of goal there is no reason why we can’t pick up another.”   Injuries and suspensions have hit the squad over the last few weeks however manager Aaron Callaghan believes that this has given opportunities for players to come in and stake their claim for a place in the starting 11,   “In recent weeks we have been a little unlucky with the number of injuries and suspensions across the squ ...

Former Blues player Pat Fenlon leads race for Linfield job Former Blues player Pat Fenlon has emerged as the early favourite to replace David Jeffrey as Linfield boss. Jeffrey announced on Saturday that he will step down at the end of the season after 17 years in charge. Former Shelbourne, Derry City and Bohemians manager Fenlon resigned as Hibernian boss in November. Linfield chairman Jim Kerr said the club hopes to name a new manager at Windsor Park within a month or by the end of March at the latest. Fenlon joined the Blues in 1994 and the midfielder spent two successful years with the Belfast club. The 44-year-old won five League of Ireland titles as a manager and is available after his departure from Easter Road. Former Northern Ireland striker David Healy, who is a Linfield fan, has also been linked with the Blues post despite having no managerial experience. Jeffrey has already won 30 trophies, one short of Roy Coyle's record tally of 31 as Linfield manager. He could break that record if the Blues ...
Please note some people may find one of the pictures upsetting, if you are easliy offended do not veiw the pictures. Stephen McConomy Stephen was an eleven year old schoolboy who lived in Dove Gardens, Bogside, Derry City, Northern Ireland. On Friday 16th April 1982 he was present in Fahan Street, Derry when stones were being thrown at a British Army Saracen armoured vehicle. It is generally accepted that he was walking away from the vehicle with his hands in his pockets when a plastic bullet was fired from inside the Saracen. It hit Stephen in the back of the head causing him to be thrown onto a grassy bank. Eyewitnesses who tried to get aid to the St John’s Primary School pupil were prevented from doing so by soldiers, who threatened to shoot anyone who went near him. Eventually he was transported with a friend in the back of a police landrover to Altnagelvin Hospital where his injuries were found to be so critical that he was transferred 75 miles to a hospital in Belfast. He was put on a life suppor ...

Might stick around to 5 for a talk by Pat Loughrey on Patrick Kavanagh 'The Magic of the Ordinary'. Pity about the prices though £8 and £10 respectively keeping such cultural conributions and local knowledge out of earshot of the rural *** . Its on in the Laurel Villa, Magherafelt if anyone is interested and to further my gripe it probably received significant state and local gombeen support judging by the back cover of the programme: Big Lottery Fund, Derry City of Culture, Magherfelt District Council, NI Tourist Board etc.

DERRY CITY 0-1 DUNDALK Tiarnan Mulvenna was the hero as he struck in the 91st minute to hand Dundalk a priceless three points at the Brandywell on Friday evening! Stephen Kenny made three changes from the side which lost to Limerick last weekend at Thomond Park with John Dillon, Eoghan Osborne and Patrick Hoban returning to the starting XI replacing John Mountney and Mark Rossiter, who missed out injured, and Vinny Faherty who dropped to the bench where he joined new signings Jordan Keegan and Francis McCaffrey. The visitors started the brighter on a fine summer evening in Derry City with Darren Meenan testing Ger Doherty in the home goal early on before a few ventures forward came to nothing. Kurtis Byrne shot wide from an angle after some good work from Hoban and Dillon on 10 minutes before Derry City had their first chance of the game when Patrick McEleney shot from the edge of the box but Osborne blocked. Hoban found space on the edge of the box after a wonderful run and his delightful cross missed M ...

Kilkenny City Ladies Gaelic Football Club claimed their second Feile title in two years after they defeated Moyle Rovers in the Division 2 Feile Ladies Gaelic Football Final in Celtic Park on Sunday. The club travelled on Thursday June 27th from Langtons, Kilkenny and reached Glenties in West Donegal, at 9pm that night, where they were hosted by Naomh Connaill and given a very warm welcome. The following morning at 12pm the girls started their first match of the 2013 Feile against their host club and Donegal Champions, Naomh Connaill, Glenties, coming out on top with a score of 5-9 to 1-0. After that match the girls loaded onto buses and headed to Derry City for the Feile Parade with the other 150 competing teams. On Saturday morning bright and early the girls travelled from Glenties to Letterkenny, where their first match started at 9.30am against Donegal Runners-up, St. Eunnan’s, Letterkenny. Kilkenny City won that match on a score of 5-2 to 2-0. Next up for the City girls were the Clare Champions, .. ...
Ireland's team FC Derry City has posted in there's web site over Trabzonspor's informations. City have been drawn against Turkish opposition for the first time in European competition. So what can the Candystripes expect? Cityweb has a look at our opponents in the 2013 Europa League. Trabzonspor are based in the Black Sea town of Trabzon and are classified as one of the “Big Four” in Turkish football, and the first club outside Istanbul to win the Turkish league title. The club was formed in the late 1960s as a result of the merger of a number of amateur sides and originally played in red and white stripes, before changing to their traditional claret and blue in the late 1960s. The club play in the Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium which holds over 26,000 fans which is slightly larger than the type of venues that the Candystripes are used to playing in on a weekly basis. The club have enjoyed some terrific results there including beating Liverpool FC, FC Internazionale Milano and FC Barcelona amongst oth ...
Full Interview - Andy Waterworth "It was always going to be a big decision to leave Glentoran and join Linfield. I had my mind made up some time ago, as the club had told me early in the New Year that I could speak to other clubs and at that time, as well as speaking with David Jeffrey, I also spoke with Derry City and Dundalk. The club had actually told me it was looking like they wouldn't be able to offer contracts at the end of the season. I always knew Linfield was a big club and it just felt right coming here. I always knew I was going to get a lot of stick moving here because of the rivalry between the clubs but it just felt this was the right decision and once my mind was made up, I just wanted to come and play here. I love Windsor Park and I love coming to play here and I think that was a big part of my decision too. It was a nice way to end the season with the 2 goals in the cup final. I feel very lucky to have played and scored in a cup winning team. I had a dream about it the night before. The ...

When Johnny Crossan put pen to paper to sign for Sunderland in October 1962, it finally brought to an end one of the most amazing transfer stories in the history of British football. The controversy which shook the soccer world blew up three years earlier when Johnny was playing for Colraine in the Irish League and was on the verge of making a big money move to Bristol City. The former Northern Ireland international, now living back home in Londonderry, takes up the story: “Basically the problem stemmed from my previous club Derry City, who reported me to the Irish Football League for receiving illegal payments from them whilst registered as an amateur player. At the time, a number of top English clubs where chasing me and when I dec ...
Paul Whitters 15 years, Derry City, struck on the head by a plastic-bullet fired by a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary on 15 April 1981. He died in hospital ten days later on 25 April. Paul was the second oldest in a family with three sons. He was born in Scotland and brought up in Clydebank and Glasgow, where his father worked in variety of jobs. Paul was eleven years old when his parents decided to move to Derry City, their hometown. Paul’s parents described their son ‘as a bright, intelligent and cheerful lad who was always busying himself with newspaper rounds, or visiting and helping his grandparents.’ They said he enjoyed soccer and was a fan of Glasgow Celtic. He was a member of Markey Toland’s Youth Club on the Foyle Road, and often went to discos there. During April 1981 tension between the nationalists community and British forces in Derry City was running high. In the H-Blocks at Long Kesh prison camp republican prisoners were on hunger strike for political status, while on the s ...
Tristar give Derry City a fright! Pat Harkin Cup Tristar 1 Derry City 2 Jon Clifford's Tristar Boys' ran Derry City very close in the Pat Harkin tonight at a packed Brandywell Showgrounds. Tristar started brightly and Doherty fired wide early on when well placed. However, Derry soon found their rhythm with Mc Namee and Tracey very impressive in midfield. Indeed, it was the latter who set up ex. Tristar man, Barr, who headed over from just inside the box. It was an excellent pass from Barr who set up Tracey on the 20 minute mark and the hit man made no mistake, leaving Ferry in the Tristar goal with no chance. Derry pinned Tristar back at this stage and doubled their lead through G. Kelly after neat work by Mc Namee to leave the score 2 0 at the break. To their credit, Tristar re-grouped at half-time and were quick out of the blocks in the second half, playing a neat passing game. They were soon back in the game when Cusack found the net from a S. Mc Laughlin flick on. It was all Tristar at this stage and ...

Sligo Rovers meet Glentoran in the Setanta Sports Cup quarter-final second leg at The Oval tonight. Rovers hold a 5-0 advantage from the first leg after goals from Lee Lynch (2), Anthony Elding, Ryan Connolly and Evan McMillan. Rovers will be looking to make it through to the semi-final stage for the fourth year in-a-row which has never been previously achieved. Only Linfield (2005-2007), Drogheda (2006-2008) and Cork City (2006-2008) have matched Rovers current streak of three semi-finals in a row. Following last Friday’s win over Derry City, the Bit o' Red will hope to continue a good start to the new season. Lee Lynch has recovered from illness which ruled him out of the match in The Brandywell. Aaron Greene is out with an ankle injury. Danny North is also absent because of injury. Rovers boss Ian Baraclough said: “We’re going to go and try to win the game. We will use the squad as well because we have some players who need games and are looking for a chance to get into the team. “We hold a ver ...
Derry City's League of Ireland campaign began with a home defeat by champions Sligo Rovers as Anthony Elding's first-half goal proved decisive. Sligo dominated early on and it was little surprise when Elding put the visitors ahead on 30 minutes. Derry improved in the second half as Mark Griffin went close to equalising. David Cawley rattled the Derry woodwork as Elding went close again before Barry Molloy and Barry McNamee had late Derry efforts cleared off the line. But despite Derry's late rally, Sligo, on balance, deserved to take all three points after producing another classy performance full of neat passing and enterprise. Derry were already without Kevin Deery, Patrick Kavanagh and Sean Houston heading into the game and they received a further blow just before the kick-off when defender Stewart Greacen was ruled out for at least two months by a knee injury. With Barry McNamee playing out of position at left-back and having little understanding with flank man Thomas Crawley, Derry struggled badly ea ...
Northern Irish hopes for the Setanta Cup now rest with Derry City
With the opening of the trails in Davagh just around the corner and with more club members heading into the mountains on their mountainbikes, The North West Mountain Rescue Team have been taking part in training exercises in Davagh to ensure they are prepared for the eventuality of a mountainbiker being injured on the trails. The North West Mountain Rescue Team was established in Derry City in 1980 to provide a search and rescue service for the north west of Northern Ireland. Today the operational area has extended to include all of Northern Ireland, with the exception of the Mourne Mountains which is covered by its own team. However, as a member of the Irish Mountain Rescue Association (IMRA), we are expected to support any of the 10 other Mountain Rescue Teams based on the island of Ireland. The NWMRT operate a 24 hour call out service at the request of the PSNI and there will be some contact details provided at the bottom of the page which any members going into the hills whether the Davagh Trail Centr ...
