At 32, Pule Mabe is the youngest member to have joined the powerful ANC national executive committee. The former ANC Youth League treasurer general was elected in December last year after he campaigned tirelessly for the re-election of Jacob Zuma as ANC president. Once a close ally of expelled youth league president Julius Malema, Mabe is now seen as an adversary of Malema, who unsuccessfully campaigned for Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe to replace Zuma as ANC president. A former Mail & Guardian journalist and former government communicator, Mabe has been roped into the ANC communications subcommittee. He is also part of the ANC’s election team, which is led by former Limpopo Premier Ngoako Ramahlodi. A politician-cumbusinessman, Mabe is determined to change the lives of many South Africans. Why Cyril Ramaphosa won't be ANC king KwaZulu-Natal Jacob Zuma supporters say the ANC's deputy president cannot be trusted not to reopen the corruption probe. Cyril Ramaphosa will not succeed Jacob Zuma if the current president's supporters in KwaZulu-Natal have their way. Barely two months after the ANC's conference in Mangaung, a caucus of Zuma's supporters in KwaZulu-Natal have already started informal lobbying to have former home affairs minister and current African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma succeed Zuma instead of ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa. Zuma, who overwhelmingly defeated Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe to retain the party presidency in December at Mangaung, made it clear in a recent interview with the SABC that he would not stand for a third term as ANC president. But political observers both in and out of the party believe he plans to anoint a successor. Until recently, Ramaphosa, a former unionist turned businessman, was seen as the automatic choice for th ...

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's deputy president will meet with the mining industry and unions on Thursday for a regularly scheduled forum aimed at bringing stability to the sector, as a crippling platinum strike approaches its ninth week. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe's spokesman Thabo Masebe said the meeting would have taken place even if there was no strike, but it could give the world's top platinum producers and the striking AMCU union a chance to meet for the first time since wage talks collapsed almost three weeks ago. Asked if issues around the strike would be raised, an industry source said the meeting would "cover all of these critical aspects". Motlanthe is the government's point man on labour tensions in the country's mining sector but past meetings have done little to ease them. The biggest mining strike in South Africa since apartheid ended two decades ago is hitting economic growth, making it an unwelcome distraction for President Jacob Zuma and his ruling ANC party as general ...

South African DEPUTY PRESIDENT Kgalema Motlanthe, PLANNING MINISTER TREVOR MANUEL RETIRE FROM POLITICS The South African Parliament yesterday in Cape Town bid farewell to two stalwarts who are retiring from politics and are seen not to be recontesting their parliamentary seats in the May 2013 elections. Members of Parliament (MPs) stood to applaud Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel after they delivered swansong speeches in the National Assembly on Tuesday. The deputy president wiped tears from his eyes as he bid Parliament an emotional farewell. Manuel was also choked with emotion as he took his leave, his mother watching from the gallery as she’d done 20 years ago when he was first sworn in as an MP. “My mother in the house probably doesn’t recognise her son from all of the nice things that have been said here today.” Neither Motlanthe nor Manuel made themselves available for re-election. Cape Town – Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile has encouraged South Africans, especially those that were close to or were part of the liberation struggle, to write more books about the political history of the country. Mashatile said this would help preserve the country’s heritage by imparting the story of the political struggle to generations to come. Speaking at the launch of a book entitled: “The Future We Chose: Emerging Perspectives on The Centenary of the ANC” in Cape Town on Friday, Mashatile said his department would support book projects that would contribute to preserving the country’s arts and heritage. “The Department of Arts and Culture, amongst many of its responsibilities, encourages the writing of books – especially in indigenous languages – and the reading of books, particularly to tell the true story of who we are as South African people. “I encourage us all to write books,” said the minister. He added that there were books by people who were very critical about ...

Cracks have emerged in President Jacob Zuma's camps in Limpopo and the North West as ANC leaders battle for top positions in both the party and government. After Mangaung, the victorious Zuma faction showed no mercy and purged supporters of Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who ran for the position of ANC president and lost to Zuma. But it appears that the glue that held the Zuma camp together before Mangaung is no longer holding. There are fears that the leadership tensions in the two provinces might drive some ANC members to join Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters, which has a strong presence in both provinces. Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha and the public works MEC, Dickson Masemolo, are both key Zuma allies but will go head to head for the position of ANC provincial chairperson, which was left vacant by Cassel Mathale in December. Support for the two leaders will be revealed by the outcome of the provincial list conference, which started on Thursday, and four regional conferences, which begi ...

Well here is some truth for Africa however so sad...Zuma spends R45m on salary increases Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma has ignored calls to curb spending and has given top politicians a R45m salary increase for the financial year ending in March. According to the Sunday Independent, Zuma signed the 5% pay increase on 3 January and the hike was gazetted on Thursday. Members of his executive, premiers, MPs, MECs and MPLs will all benefit despite earlier calls for a pay freeze. The increases will be backdated to April last year. The increases range from R43 000 for MPLs to R118 000 for Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu and National Council of Provinces chair Mninwa Mahlangu. Ministers got just over R100 000 and premiers more than R94 000. In October 2012, Zuma met with business, labour and civil society to discuss how to recover investor confidence in the economy. He called on all CEOs and executive directors in the public sector and senior executives in the public s ...
Report shows improvement in HIV statistics THE number of people dying of Aids has decreased significantly in Mzansi. According to a UN report handed over to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, the number of Aids-related deaths fell by 30% from 330 in 2004 to 240 in 2012. New HIV infections fell from 540 to 370. Motlanthe said: “Although these are figures we can be proud of, we must not rest until every person who needs it is receiving HIV treatment and there are no new infections.” The success of HIV programmes to prevent mother to child transmission and the roll-out of ARVs to millions has also given the country hope. The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) praised the government for the success of its programmes but said the rate of infection was still too high. Marcus Louw, TAC spokesman, said the increased number of people on ARVs, condom distribution and treatment for expectant mums had saved many lives. In 2008, the rate of mother-to-child transmission was 8,5% but by 2011 it had dropped to 2,7%. Th ...
R45 million pay hike for government: Report 2014-01-20 06:41:20 | Sapa President Jacob Zuma approved a salary hike of R45 million for government, despite earlier calls to freeze pay increases, the Sunday Independent reported. The five percent pay hike applies to the 2013/2014 financial year and is for members of Zuma's executive, premiers and various other provincial and parliamentary government officials. The newspaper said that its calculations suggested that the salary increase - signed by Zuma on January 3 and gazetted on Thursday - would amount to R45 million. According to the Sunday Independent, the Independent Commission for the Renumeration of Public Office Bearers had previously - amongst other recommendations - suggested that the salaries of politicians earning R1 million or more not be increased. However, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said that Zuma had taken a number of factors into consideration in setting the pay hikes. Amongst the increases, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe would rec ...

According to media reports, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said it would continue strike action at Northam’s Zondereinde mine and the Association of Mine Workers and Construction Union (AMCU) signalled its intention to down tools across the platinum sector next week. In June last year, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe was charged with leading a task team consisting of the Ministers of Finance‚ Mineral Resources and Labour to engage various role players in mining in order to stabilise the industry. Even though the subsequent agreement failed to receive resounding support from AMCU, government was at least seen to be taking an active role in attempting to stabilize the industry through facilitative discussion. THE general election in 2014 is more likely to place the African National Congress (ANC) at a crossroads than the entire country, according to political economist Moeletsi Mbeki. Mr Mbeki said it would be natural for the ANC to be at a crossroads ahead of the 2014 national elections, as splinter party formations and fights with alliance partners had put the ANC through its paces in recent weeks. The ANC is at a crossroads because these past few weeks have seen a series of new parties. The ANC is peeling off because it has been in power for 20 years," he said. And what does it have to show for its 20 years in power?" Mr Mbeki asked. In an interview with the Financial Times last week, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe took aim at "vested personal interests" preventing the ANC from being more united and effective, saying the problems of the party are likely to worsen in the short term. "If it does not pay attention to the importance of being relevant to the people of South Africa, it will run the risk of lo ...
The issue of Clive Derby-Lewis who is serving a 25 years prison sentence for his role in the killing of SA Communist Party general secretary Chris Hani in 1993 is once again in the public discourse with muted calls for his release on compassionate grounds. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is said to feel "tormented" by the question of whether Chris Hani's killer should be released. Some black people feel that Derby-Lewis should be released in the name of reconciliation. I have to say I do not share the same sentiment. The reconciliation project as championed by the now deceased Mandela has all but failed. Black people have already done a lot in the name of reconciliation and it is time white people played their part too. How far backward are we supposed to bend as if we are the villains and not the victims? For nearly 20 years we have been extending the olive branch to our white compatriots who never showed any interest in reciprocating the gesture. The olive branch has been allowed to wither and die he ...

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Ilse Fischer Wilson bid Madiba a final farewell As the nation prepares to bid farewell to Nelson Mandela, how he is remembered is increasingly becoming an important topic of discussion. Every generation has its own interpretation of history. Those who lived through apartheid know Mandela the freedom fighter – the black pimpernel who gave his life to a cause. Those who were barely out of their diapers when he walked out of prison know Mandela the nation-builder – the man who united a country that seemed doomed to fail. And the generations that will follow will know Mandela the iconic global leader – the Moses of South Africa who liberated an entire nation. But for those who knew him intimately, who had the benefit of interaction with the man, they will remember Mandela the man. A man who was merely one of a group of freedom fighters who dedicated their lives to fighting for the liberation of a nation and the democratic ideal. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe t ...

Ms Mandela said his wife Graca, the children and grandchildren were all there to say goodbye. South Africa is observing a series of commemorations over the next week, leading up to the funeral on Sunday. More than 100 current or former heads of state or government will attend the funeral or Tuesday's national memorial. Makaziwe Mandela told the BBC's Komla Dumor: "Until the last moment he had us, you know... The children were there, the grandchildren were there, Graca was there, so we are always around him and even at the last moment, we were sitting with him on Thursday the whole day." She said: "I think from last week, Friday until Thursday, it was a wonderful time, if you can say the process of death is wonderful. But Tata [Nelson Mandela] had a wonderful time, because we were there. "When the doctors told us I think Thursday morning... that there was nothing th ...

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is just great, a true statesman. He completely left politicking out of his address to special joint sitting of Parliament to commemorate the life of Dr NR Mandela. I never heard him mention the word ANC once in his address for this occasion. Bravo to him.

I remember the first time I met Madiba in 2009. The atmosphere was pregnant with some heavy presence of a great man. Many couldn't hold back their tears as soon as Mandela arrived, and the clapping of hands lasted almost 5 minutes. Also present were UDM's Bantu Holomisa and Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, to mention but a few. Although you are gone Tata we shall always miss you. I must thank you for giving me a chance to meet you. Long live the spirit of togetherness! Long live the good deeds of Madiba!

SHOCKING AND NOT FAIR! The government has refused to disclose the precise cost of the work on Zuma’s countryside home, but local reports say the upgrades cost about £16million. Zuma said at a breakfast meeting that he does not know how much the work will cost, that it was authorized by the Ministry of Works and was motivated by security concerns. Zuma, 70, remains popular in his Zulu homeland and many say he will win another term as ANC chief. He may be challenged by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. We have come a long way together in the fight against HIV and Aids. We have managed to make great strides and that is witnessed by our improvement of our life expectancy. This should begin to give confidence to all of us that HIV is not a life sentence. Taking an HIV test is stressful. While waiting for your results, your heart starts to race, your hands sweat and your mind weighs up the two very different outcomes. During the launch of HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) campaign in 2010 President Jacob Zuma acknowledged that taking an HIV test is “not easy”. He added: “It is a difficult decision to take. But it is a decision that must be taken by people from all walks of life, of all races, all social classes, and all positions in society. HIV does not discriminate." As nerve-racking as an HIV test may be for some, it is crucial to know your status. Therefore this coming Sunday on World AIDS Day, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, chairperson of South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) will mark ...

Jacob Zuma ‘not to blame for Kgalema Motlanthe award delay’ The postponement of an academic honour for Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe was at the international relations department’s request. This was because internal and diplomatic consultations had not been completed on time, spokesperson Clayson Monyela said today. “To allege ‘withdrawal of the academic honour’ is factually incorrect,” he said. “This was merely a postponement to allow for proper consultations. All affected by this postponement were informed.” City Press reported that Motlanthe was on his way to China to receive the academic honour from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, when it was unexpectedly withdrawn, and that President Jacob Zuma had been blamed. Motlanthe went to China to attend the Fifth Bi- National Commission. His spokesperson, Thabo Masebe, said today he did not know if the deputy president was upset by the decision to cancel his visit to the university to accept the award. ...

The report "is factually incorrect," the DIRCO said.

Deputy President Motlanthe, who is chairperson of Sanac, said the approval of the largest Global Fund grant South Africa had ever received would allow the country to expand its programmes for the treatment of AIDS and TB, but also for the important work of preventing new infections.    South Africa has received R3 billion from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe announced during a meeting of the South African National AIDS Council (Sanac) in Rustenburg, North West, recently.   The Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, said 52% of the grant would go to the national Department of Health, with the rest being divided among a range of non-governmental organisations working in the field, such as Right to Care, the National Religious Association for Social Development, and the National AIDS Convention of South Africa.   On HIV and AIDS, Minister Motsoaledi said the money would be spent on various programmes, including the procurement of antiretrovira ...

Zuma bows to e-toll pressure Xolani Mbanjwa 29 September 2013 10:01 13 Government officials reveal president’s decision was taken long before Outa went to court. President Jacob Zuma signed e-tolls into law this week because he was “under pressure” from the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) and politicians from his own party. Two senior government officials told City Press the decision to sign the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill was taken long before the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) went to court to oppose its implementation. One senior official, who was involved in the interministerial committee on e-tolling, chaired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, said e-tolling’s implementation was always something of a forgone conclusion. “By embarking on another consultation, government wanted to show that it was listening to the objections on the bill. But the die was cast long ago, when (Sanral) signed the contracts and borrowed money with government . ...
Capitalism Will Eliminate Poverty in Africa By Marian L. Tupy This article appeared in The Brenthurst Briefing on April 20, 2012. The recent recession has reinvigorated anti-capitalists everywhere, not least in Africa. In the continent’s economic powerhouse, South Africa, the rhetoric has, perhaps surprisingly, been most ardent. Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, said that there were no capitalist ideas that could address the problems that South Africa faces. Jeremy Cronin, the Minister of Transport said that “There is now a well-established scientific consensus that our present global economic trajectory is leading human civilization towards catastrophe.” Not to be outdone, the Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe warned that “Capitalist crisis threatens world peace because it may… result in fascism.” Other leaders on the African continent have expressed similar anti-capitalist sentiments. Yet, the last decade was great for Africa. The real gross domestic product ros ...

The Chamber of Mines says gold producers and labour have met in Johannesburg to discuss the 2013 wage negotiations. Representative for the gold producers Charmane Russel says they sought to set the scene in respect the prevailing economic circumstances of employers and employees and to develop a protocol that would guide the negotiations. The protocol is expected to be finalised on Thursday. The unions would then table and motivate their demands. Last month, trade union AMCU submitted its demands for the gold sector. It wanted a R 7 500 wage increase. The NUM asked for R 7000 a month. According to an agreement brokered by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe last week, employers made a commitment to follow proper labour relations procedures. Unions pledged to adhere to legal procedure for marches and protest action. AMCU did not sign the agreement.
