The Congress MP from Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, Choudhary Lal Singh, has landed in trouble for possessing land in excess of the upper ceiling of 100 standard kanals fixed under the Jammu Kashmir Agrarian Reforms Act. The state government has begun proceedings to confiscate the excess land owned by an educational trust run by him. Official sources told The Indian Express that Kathua Deputy Commissioner Zahida Parveen Khan has issued a notice asking R B Education Trust to identify 100 standard kanals of land for itself of the total 240 kanals owned by it at present. The trust has been given a week's time, the sources said. Meanwhile, another 92 kanals of state land adjoining the trust land and allegedly encroached by the Congress MP was retrieved by the revenue department Saturday. Government is likely to turn down the request of family of Muhammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged and buried in Tihar jail, for handing over his body. A senior Home Ministry official said a final decision in this regard will be taken soon and the Jammu and Kashmir government will be informed about it. The state government had forwarded a letter sent by Afzal’s wife Tabasum to Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla in North Kashmir demanding handing over of his body. The Home Ministry official said Afzal was buried inside Tihar jail complex in line with the prison manual and the government has no plans to hand over the body considering various aspects, including the law and order situation in the state. Police file 11 cases over Saturday's violence Police filed 11 lawsuits in the capital Dhaka on Saturday night over torching of vehicles and bombs explosions ahead of the opposition's countrywide shutdown protesting hike in fuel prices. The cases were filed with the Ramna, New Market, Lalbagh, Kotwali, Sabujbagh, Tejgaon Industrial Zone, Mirpur, Kafrul, Gulshan and Banani police stations. He said an inquest would be held to determine the cause of death. The name of the victim has not been released as the investigation continues. The Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) for clearance of promotions in police department for next rank met Tuesday in Jammu and cleared promotion of Additional Director Generals (ADGs), Inspector Generals (IGs) and Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs). The promotions cleared by the DPC have to be ratified by the state cabinet after which a reshuffle in the police department would be affected. alandhar: A television journalist was on Monday assaulted by some unidentified persons when he tried to protest the teasing of a girl at a market area here, police said. "Ashwini Malhotra, a journalist with a news channel, was shopping with his family members when some persons in an inebriated condition teased a girl," Deputy Commissioner of Police Sarabjit Singh said. Passersby, including Malhotra, objected to the teasing, he said, adding the journalist was attacked when he tried to inform the police. Malhotra was taken to the district hospital. HYDERABAD: The high court on Monday pulled up the AP Central Power Distribution Company (CPDCL) for not disconnecting electricity supply to illegal plastic units operating in Shastripuram colony despite receiving a communique from the GHMC clearly stating that the units were illegal. A high court bench of Chief Justice P C Ghose and Justice Sanjay Kumar were hearing a public interest petition filed by residents of the colony. It was learnt during the hearing that GHMC admitted that the units were illegal as they were operating without trade licenses. Residents of Shastripuram colony moved the high court on December 5 with the prayer to issue an order to the GHMC, APPCB, Labor department and the CPDCL to shift the plastic units out of the area.
