Source: www.dailykos.com - Monday, January 12, 2015 Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer is contemplating a Senate campaign Leading Off : ⢠CA-Sen : Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer's Thursday retirement left us with more than our share of potential Senate candidates. Over the last few days, several of them have made their interest (or lack of interest) in the seat clear. We've created a list of who is considering a bid and who has ruled one out as of Sunday evening, and we'll be updating it as needed throughout Monday. Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer has said little publicly, but he's taking a very serious look at running . Politico's Andrew Restuccia reports that Steyer began making calls to his political contacts almost as soon as Boxer announced her departure and has begun reviewing polling data. However, Steyer may end up holding his fire until 2018, when Gov. Jerry Brown is termed out and Sen. Dianne Feinstein is likely to retire. In any case it doesn't look like we'll be waiting on Steyer for long: ...

Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu lost to The Tea Party Republican congressman Bill Cassidy in the Louisiana Senate runoff election on Saturday, completing the GOP’s dominance of the Deep South in the upper chamber. The Associated Press called the race not long after polls closed. The three-term incumbent, who chairs the influential Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, worked hard in the last days of the campaign to bring African American voters to the polls. She also tried, but failed, to convince enough fellow Democrats in voting to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Cassidy’s election is noteworthy in one respect — the state of Louisiana has not been represented by two Republican senators concurrently since 1876. His victory brings the total number of Republicans in the Senate up to 54.

President Barack Obama will nominate former senior Pentagon official Ashton Carter on Friday to replace Chuck Hagel as defense secretary, the White House said. Carter is expected to win Senate confirmation easily in 2015. A White House official said on condition of anonymity that Hagel will join Obama to announce Carter’s nomination. The nomination ceremony, set for 10 a.m. ET, will cap an awkward process during which several high-profile potential candidates took themselves out of contention for what may be the worst — or at least the most challenging — job in the federal government. Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, a former officer in the Army’s storied 82nd Airborne Division, released a statement saying he did not want the job even before reports of Hagel’s departure had been confirmed. The 72-year-old current Senate Minority Leader beat Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s Secretary of State, in one of the country’s most closely watched races. Democrats hoped to unseat McConnell, who has represented Kentucky in the Senate for thirty years, but Grimes lost steam in recent weeks when she refused to disclose whether she voted for President Obama. 3). North Carolina’s Thom Tillis defeated Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan in a race Democrats hoped would be a bright spot on Election Night. Tom Cotton’s Consultant Who ‘May Not Exist’ Actually DoesWASHINGTON -- It turns out Arkansas Rep. Tom Cotton (R) was not employing some sort of phantom consultant in his bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor -- it's merely a new one without a long paper trail. Since March, Cotton has paid some $323,000 to a firm called Right Solutions Partners LLC, according to federal election filings. One news outlet noticed that fact, but also could find no sign of a human being attached to the firm, and no indication the firm had done work anywhere else. When no explanation was forthcoming from Cotton's campaign, it prompted a headline that said the congressman was paying a consultant who "may not exist." The campaign did eventually get around to explaining to HuffPost that the person behind the firm is a former top fundraiser for the Club for Growth, Erika Sather, and that the money had been paid to her through Right Solutions, which she created a little more than a year ago. Senators Watching as Kerry Visits Myanmar When Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in Myanmar Saturday to meet with government officials there along with ASEAN Regional Forum and other meetings, the Senate will be watching. The Kentucky Republican has long been one of the Senate’s leading voices, along with Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, against a repressive military junta that long ruled the country with an iron fist. Recent democratic changes have led to easing of U.S. economic sanctions against the country, but McConnell had a warning for the country’s rulers that more must be done. This is a long post, but it gives incite to the upcoming Lt. Gov Campaign. Democrats see opportunity in the GOP ticket By Peggy Fikac May 28, 2014 | Updated: May 28, 2014 11:08pm AUSTIN — No sooner had Sen. Dan Patrick won the Republican nod for lieutenant governor than Democrats sought to capitalize on a ballot lineup they want to paint as out of touch with Texans. Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis' campaign for governor instantly challenged her GOP opponent, Attorney General Greg Abbott, to appear with the incendiary Patrick, whose rhetoric on issues like immigration at times has seemed tailor-made to offend Hispanics. In the Democrats' uphill battle to regain a toehold in state office, it looks like opportunity — especially since they've got a stark contrast in their lieutenant governor nominee, Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, a Latina who has campaigned with Davis. US Senator Susan Collins told CNN in an interview that she wants the U.S. military to help rescue more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria. Collins joined Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski in writing a bipartisan letter Tuesday to President Barack Obama asking the administration to do more. It was signed by all 20 women senators. But the letter focused on the diplomatic front, and urged Obama to press the UN to add Boko Haram to its al Qaeda Sanctions List.

The Americans With No Abilities Act (ANAA) President Barack Obama and the Democratic Senate are considering sweeping legislation that will provide new benefits for many more Americans. The Americans With No Abilities Act (ANAA) is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills or ambition. "Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society," said California Sen. Barbara Boxer. "We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability (POI) to be ridiculed and passed over. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing." In a Capitol Hill press conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pointed to the success of the U.S. Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard ...
I would like to refresh the memories of the 'esteemed' students and faculty at Rutgers University about who it was who started the 'lie' about WMDs in Iraq. Here are a few quotes from some politicians you might know. Don't think any of them belong to Condi's political party: "One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." --President Bill Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998 "If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." --President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998 "Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." --Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998 "He will use those weapons of mass destruction a . ...
Tillis won. What exactly do we have to go through for voters to get it. This man depends on Koch brothers money, he's for fracking, closing schools, taking away the rights of Unions. This guy is not good for NC or anyplace else. WASHINGTON (AP) — North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis captured the Republican nomination to oppose imperiled Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan Tuesday night, overcoming anti-establishment rivals by a comfortable margin in the first of a springtime spate of primaries testing the strength of a tea party movement that first rocked the GOP four years ago. In Ohio, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald won the Democratic nomination to challenge Gov. John Kasich in the fall. U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, rolled to re-nomination for another term in Congress, his 13th. On a night that was kind to Republican incumbents in three states, GOP Rep. Susan Brooks of Indiana easily fended off a challenge from the right, rolling up 75 percent of the votes in a three-way race. ...

Heads up Colorado friends: "Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, facing a tough re-election campaign, will likely vote against a measure to force construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline this week. That puts him at odds with a majority of Colorado voters and a plurality of his own supporters who would like to see the pipeline built." ---Dailycaller.com
Sen. Rockefeller says some of Obama's opponents object to his skin color.
Daily Kos: *** category... MN-Sen: In Democratic Sen. Al Franken's first ad of his re-election campaign, the owner of a tool company praises him for "working to connect community colleges with manufacturers, to help businesses fill the high-skill jobs that are open right now." Meanwhile, in a slightly disturbing spot, Republican businessman Mike McFadden goes the whole "have your kids tell everyone how cheap you are route." Here, though, McFadden goes a lot further than usual, with his son Conor recounting a time his father insisted on removing stitches Conor had received in a hockey injury himself, rather than letting a nurse do it for $100. (If he's so cheap, why are his kids playing hockey and not basketball?) And because he skimps on his children's medical care, McFadden says he's the perfect guy to take on Obamacare. Yipes. ROB: Michelle Bachmann is NOT the only lunatic in Minnesota .

INVESTIGATION OF BENGHAZI IS ALL ABOUT POLITICS A thorough study of the Benghazi timeline proves there is no Benghazi coverup. The Democrats and the Media knows this, except for FOX news. The Republicans are playing politics, because all of the facts are out. It only took nine weeks, after the Benghazi attack, for the US military to explain why their story line wwas almost the same as that of the State Department and the CIA. The Pentagon clearly defined the timeline of the Libya terror attack in an off-camera briefing with an anonymous official. It is merely a coincindence that, after this military explanation Gen. David Petraeus resigned. Gen. Petraaeus Only resigned due to an extramarital affair every one knew about. This resignation hadnothing to do with him being slated to testify in closed-door hearings on Capitol Hill. However, Petraeus no longer plans to testify. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told "Fox News Sunday" that she "absolu ...

U.S. Senate candidate Thom Tillis can count on the support of Republicans such as John Ayers and his wife, Barbara – just not in the primary. The couple cast their votes for Republican Greg Brannon at South Regional library Thursday, moments before Tillis walked in to cast his. “We feel that Tillis is the only one that can beat that gal,” said John Ayers, 83, referring to Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan. “But today,” added his wife, “We want to show support for Greg Brannon.” Tillis, the speaker of the N.C. House, needs votes in the primary if he’s going to make it to face Hagan in November. He got at least two on Thursday, from himself and his wife, Susan. Polls have shown Tillis is close to or above the 40 percent he needs to win the primary without a runoff. Speaking to reporters after voting, he kept his focus not on Brannon or other GOP rivals but on Hagan.

Boxer questions TSA about San Jose stowaway (AP) A few weeks before a 15-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration conducted a review of San Jose’s airport and found its perimeter to be in compliance with the agency’s security requirements. Now, Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California is questioning the thoroughness of the TSA’s nearly three-month review given that the boy said he hopped a fence to get to the plane. Boxer made the case in a Senate hearing Wednesday that if a 15-year-old could get through security barriers, others could, too. “What if it was someone else with an explosive?” Boxer asked TSA Administrator John Pistole told Boxer that the agency’s review indicates the airport has the proper security systems in place, but it’s not a guarantee that nothing bad will ever happen. Hoping to reunite with his mother, the boy breached the airport’s perimeter on April 19 by allegedly scaling a 1 ...

Absolutely irrefutable facts, period. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts is the latest lawmaker to go after Wisconsin Republican Rep. Paul Ryan and his recent controversial comments about men in inner cities not valuing the “culture of work.” And it only took Warren 80 seconds to make her case. Warren, the progressive consumer advocate, recently spoke at the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor’s Humphrey-Mondale Dinner, quoting Ryan’s remarks on poverty in American during a conservative radio program last month. Ryan had said: “We have got this tailspin of culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning to value the culture of work, so there is a real culture problem here that has to be dealt with.” Ryan, insisted Warren, “sees three unemployed workers for every job opening in American and blames people who can’t find a job.” She pointed out, however, that in 2008 the economy crashed and w ...
Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren is blasting Rep. Paul Ryan for his new budget, criticizing his vision for the country.
In Washington, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California made a similar point earlier Sunday on CNN, saying that Crimea is "dominantly Russian." She sounded resolved that the peninsula with a majority ethnic Russian population now had returned to Moscow's provenance, as Putin wanted all along. "A referendum was passed. That, I think, has been done," said Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee. "But Ukraine is a different subject." Her acknowledgment clashes with Obama and the United Nations, who call the military backed annexation of Crimea a violation of international law and dismiss the Crimean secession referendum as a sham. Obama has threatened further sanctions targeting vital sectors of Russia's economy such as financial services, energy, mining, defense and engineering. However, it remains unclear if European powers such as Germany and Britain would join in such an escalation because of their stronger economic links with Russia.

Scott Brown Readies New Hampshire Senate Run Former Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts officially announced Friday he has formed an exploratory committee for a bid in New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate race this year. However, the Republican did not officially say he will run against the state’s Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, NECN reported. Brown blasted Obamacare Friday, and also talked about what his party needs to be doing to move forward. Brown said he is looking forward to meeting people in New Hampshire as he starts traveling around the state starting Saturday. "Obviously I have to do some listening and learning and find out from everybody what their concerns are and make sure I have a full understanding of the challenges, and then I’ll make a further decision down the road," Brown told reporters after the speech. There are already other Republicans in the U.S. Senate race, but analysts agree that Brown would immediately be the frontrunner if he officially ran against Shaheen. Democrats in the Granit ...

From Crosscut.com and other sources - U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, a conservative Republican, announced Thursday that he's retiring from Congress this year, opening the way for a fall election fight over his seat in the Yakima area. Hasting's 4th Congressional District generally swings Republican, though not necessarily in a particularly libertarian way: State data show the district went for Mitt Romney by a large margin in 2012 and against *** marriage (Referendum 74) and marijuana legalization (Initiative 502). One name already mentioned as a possible replacement for Hastings is Republican state Sen. CURTIS KING, who has co-chaired the Transportation Committee and works well with fellow co-chair Democratic Sen. Tracey Eide. According to other political observers, the short list of candidates that might be in the running for Hastings’ seat include: Eastside state Sen. Janea Homquist Newbry, Clint Didier, who made a run for Washington governor as a conservative Republican, Benton County commissioner Jero ...

Senate sends farm bill to Obama By Ramsey Cox and Erik Wasson The Senate voted 68-32 Tuesday to pass a $956 billion farm bill that will reduce food stamp payments by $8 billion over the next 10 years. It’s the first time Congress has approved a new farm bill since 2008, and follows three years of ups and downs for the legislation. President Obama supports the bill even though it reduces farm subsidy payments by less than what he had sought. The White House said he would travel to Michigan State University on Friday to sign the bill. Michigan is the home state of Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, the chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. The bill would save $16.6 billion in spending over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. A majority of the spending in the bill is for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known widely as food stamps. The original House proposal would have cut $39 billion from the food stamps program, while the Senate-passed bill called for a $ ...
