Delaware River

The Delaware River is a major river on the Atlantic Coast of the United States first mapped by a Dutch expedition led by Henry Hudson in 1609. The river was christened the South River in the New Netherland colony that followed, in contrast to the North River, as the Hudson River was then known.

(While doing a search earlier this morning, I came by this) Trenton – Morrisville toll bridge March 7th, 2013 Trenton, N.J and Morrisville, PA are usually connected by 3 bridges throughout the Delaware River. Tolls are collected only when you’re venturing southbound, leaving New Jersey, although originally they were obtained in both directions. Snow Storm in USA on Thursday Description The winter storm brought substantial snow and strong winds to some parts of southern Pennsylvania, prompting flight cancellations and delays, but spared others threatened snowfall or flooding. The National Weather Service says 10 inches of snow was reported the previous 24 hours in parts of Blair and Huntingdon counties, almost 9 inches in Somerset County, 8 1/2 inches in Fulton County and 7 inches in Franklin County. Officials earlier reported up to a foot of snow in Butler, Westmoreland and Allegheny counties. Forecasters posted a flood advisory for areas of tidal areas of the Delaware River and southeastern Pennsylvania but emergency officials reported no problems late Wednesday night. "We're very happy that the reports of heavy, wet snow didn't materialize in many areas where we were expecting it," said spokeswoman Ruth Miller of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, where officials were still worried about high winds. Philadelphia International Airpor ...

The fog was lifting over the lake. Thick layers of ice drifted past the boats that rowed ever so slowly to the embankment yards before them. Earlier, the general had thought how particularly odd these elements were; considering the foe at hand.      "General Washington, sir. This isn't going to work! Our men are diminishing and we're freezing out here. Even if we have a small victory, how will we have enough supplies to make it back?" Washington, cross-legged, opened his eyes from deep meditation. He looked at the soldier. General Stephen's men are weak, he thought. He eventually cleared his mind from this frustration.          Washington spoke, "Tyranny, like *** is not easily conquered. Yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph." Boats ahead of them, a soldier lit the first beacon. Across the Delaware River was Trenton, New Jersey. Washington grabbed his staff. They had finally arrived.      On solid ground, they kept to the shado . ...
Okay, okay, so it turns out yesterday was not my wrap day on The Church, today is! One more scene to go, I swear. It was news to me, but I serve the production-and my pickup time is 4pm- so it ain't so bad. I'll miss the action/tension/acting/new pals, but I've got my appearance at Exhumed Films' screening of Texas Chainsaw 2 tomorrow night at 8ish at 38th & Chestnut in Philly (International House) and of course the legendary Monster Mania horror con this weekend in Cherry Hill, NJ (right across the Delaware River!) So don't cry for me, Argentina, I'll be just fine. How are you doing?

Fracking is the process of removing through drilling natural gas embedded in shale rock formations. Water, sand and chemicals are forced under high pressure into the rock to create cracks and allow naturally occurring gas to be released and collected. Because of its connection to shale drilling, the local pipeline raises concerns from the Sierra Club of New Jersey. Jeff Tittle, the group’s executive director, said about half a dozen similar lines are proposed elsewhere in the state. “The whole purpose of these lines are to basically promote the development of shale gas drilling in Pennsylvania, which directly affects the water supply for 60 million people who get their supply from the Delaware River basin.” In a statement, Columbia officials said once the company enters into official proceedings with federal authorities, the public would be notified of open meetings and informational sessions. “Public meetings as informational events will be ongoing throughout the project up until the in-service d ...

BROADWAY in Camden. a legendary street, once the "Mall of South Jersey". Running south west of 6th Streets past Ferry Avenue and then all the way to Gloucester City, and eventually on to Woodbury, Broadway was extended north from its beginning at Market Street through to the Delaware River (Ben Franklin) Bridge toll plaza in the 1920s. When Camden began its period of industrial growth and expansion after the Civil War, the intersections of Broadway and Federal Street, Broadway and Kaighn Avenue, and Broadway and Ferry Avenue became anchor locations in the civic and commercial life of Camden and the surrounding areas. Homes and businesses soon filled in the "empty spaces" between these intersections. During the 1890s and the first two decades of the 20th Century, Camden-based contractor John J. Welsh was known in the city as "the man who built Broadway", as his firm was involved with a great many projects along the thoroughfare. Brothers George M. Holl and Lewis F. Holl also completed many projects during ...
Todays Black History: Chester's own Rothwell Family! Ariving in the U.S. as free men(Boatwrights) from England, the Rothwells settled and started their own fishing business in Lewes DE. As free men, they later began to sail their vessel up the Delaware River to Chester, PA the hub of industry and the Sturgeon Capital of the region. AS the issue of slavery weighed on the nation, the Rothwells began to hide slaves on their vessel as fishermen or carpenters in route to northern cities. One of those stops was Chester, PA, as Marcus Hook was too close to the DE (southern state) boarder, and the local Pirate hangout. One of the biggest stops for run away slaves was the house next to the old mill(end of 26 st.) with it's catacombs and tunnel system made it easy to get folks to Media, and than to Phila. via Quakers. While Chester was a Northern City, there were as many slaves there as freed Blacks. Chester allowed masters to bring slaves there for the purpose of working, and the shipping industry. As the master . ...

John Hanson, American Patriot and First President of the United States (1715-1783) Picture (Device Independent Bitmap) He was the heir of one of the greatest family traditions in the colonies and became the patriarch of a long line of American Patriots – his great-grandfather died at Lutzen beside the great King Gustavus Aldophus of Sweden; his grandfather was one of the founders of New Sweden along the Delaware River in Maryland; one of his nephews was the military secretary to George Washington; another was a signer of the Declaration; still another was a signer of the Constitution; yet another was Governor of Maryland during the Revolution; and still another was a member of the first Congress; two sons were killed in action with the Continental Army; a grandson served as a member of Congress under the new Constitution; and another grandson was a Maryland Senator. Thus, even if Hanson had not served as President himself, he would have greatly contributed to the life of the nation through his ancestry ...

Please, we need a Donald Trump to save this great vessel: SS United States is a luxury passenger liner built in 1952 for United States Lines designed to capture the trans-Atlantic speed record. Built at a cost of $78 million, the S.S.America is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the US, the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, and even in her retirement retains the Blue Riband given to the passenger liner crossing the Atlantic Ocean in regular service with the record highest speed. Her construction was partially subsidized by the US government, since she was designed to allow conversion to a troop carrier should the need arise. The S.S. United States operated uninterrupted in transatlantic passenger service until 1969. Since 1996 she has been docked at Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Col. Richard HAMPTON (1733-1804),born in Filey, Yorkshire was a British Army officer in the West Indies. He resigned his commission and went to America, where he joined the Continental Army. 50-mile pipeline to cross from Washington to Westmoreland February 7, 2013 5:00 am Share with others: 1 inShare. By Tom Barnes Folks who live in parts of Washington and Westmoreland counties can expect to see a "big ditch" being dug across the region starting in midsummer. Sunoco Oil Co. plans to construct an underground pipeline about 50 miles long, starting in Houston, Washington County, and stretching to Delmont, Westmoreland County. It will carry liquid products derived from natural gas, such as propane and ethane. When they reach Delmont, the "hydrocarbon derivatives" from the natural gas will be shipped through an existing pipeline that stretches all the way across the state to the southeastern Pennsylvania town of Marcus Hook, on the border of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Marcus Hook is a large port and industrial complex along the Delaware River that once was the site of an oil refinery, said Joseph McGinn, a spokesman for Sunoco, which is headquartered in Philadelphia. Now in the process of me running my successful barber shop I also wrote a book about, in my opinion, the first afro American child hero. I wrote the book The Legend of Jocko the small afro American boy that was once recognized on lawns everywhere as a racist object. This is a story that I hope will change the racist artifact into a symbol of African- American pride. During the Revolutionary War, a free black man Tom Graves joined George Washington’s army. Graves’ 12 year old son, Jocko wanted to go to war to but of course he was too young. Determined to go he went anyway. As Washington was preparing to cross the Delaware River for the battle of Trenton he realized that he could not transport the horses by boat, and that his steeds would have to be waiting on the other side. Jocko volunteered to hold the horses and make sure that they were ready when Washington’s troops arrived. But, during the night Jocko froze to death awaiting the soldiers, never letting go of the reins. His sacrifice spurred the ...

On This Day: 1788 - Isaac Briggs and William Longstreet patented the steamboat. The first steamboat with regular service was created by John Fitch in 1788 and operated on the Delaware River between Philadelphia and Burlington, NJ. Steamboats could travel against he current and the wind but since early engines were inefficient and used huge amounts of coal, ocean-going steamships carried sails well into the second half of the 19th century.
The Roebling family had just about outgrown their bustling factory space in South Trenton when they looked south in 1905 to a tract of empty space along a bend in the Delaware River in Burlington County. Here they ended up constructing a neat and controllable little company town whose workers milled the structural steel used to hold up the Golden Gate and many other awesome suspension bridges. The town name and the family name would be one and the same -- Roebling -- and the town of Roebling remains today a charming artifact of the industrial age. Brothers Washington, Ferdinand and Charles Roebling were already millionaire kings of industry whose privately held company had built the Brooklyn Bridge when they made their big expansion. John A. Roebling's Sons Co. had two nagging problems. It was far too big for its scattered sites in the city's southern end, and was growing increasingly dependent on the greedy trusts that supplied raw materials. Building anew would solve these dilemmas. Trenton would remain ...

State Police divers will return here on Tuesday, Jan. 29, to continue their underwater search of the frigid canal for the 39-year-old local woman missing since early Saturday morning, Jan. 26. Sarah Majoras was last seen leaving John and Peters, the New Hope, Pa., club where she works as a bartender, at about 2:30 a.m. Security cameras on the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge recorded her walk across the Delaware River and her turning north toward her North Union Avenue home. Officials are assuming she walked along the canal, a route she’s known to have taken in the past. Majoras was reported missing by her boyfriend, with whom she lived, and by coworkers at John and Peters when she failed to show up for a scheduled shift, according to John Kuczynski, Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office chief of detectives. The underwater rescue team used sonar today to plumb the murky water around the Coryell Street overpass in their attempt to find any sign that Majoras might have gone in while walking along the canal. ...

The name "Tacony" was derived from the Indian word "Tawacawonick," meaning "forest," "wilderness," or "uninhabited land."

Newsletter # 14 Friends of the Taylor Wildlife Preserve A Farm & Flood Book In 2011 the tidal Delaware River overflowed the man-made protective bank three times. Jim Taylor, who grew up on the farm, lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts was keeping tabs on the situation by careful reading of tide charts. You, too, can check water levels at: Data comes from a buoy at the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge. By Christmas, Jim, his wife Annie, and son Nat, had produced an informative booklet with color maps, photos and charts covering farm history, farming on the floodplain, and flooding at the farm from first-hand reports as well as physics and charts. The sea-wall and drainage ditches - which in the 19th century were maintained between agricultural land from the Pompeston to the Rancocas Creeks - is shown shrinking to the Taylor Farm, and the NJNLT tract. “A Farm & Flood Book: Three centuries on the banks of the Delaware” draws from histories and accounts written by earlier generations of Taylors who have documented .. ...

On This Day In History. On this day in 1777, In a stroke of strategic genius, General George Washington manages to evade conflict with General Charles Cornwallis, who had been dispatched to Trenton to bag the fox (Washington), and wins several encounters with the British rear guard, as it departs Princeton for Trenton, New Jersey. Deeply concerned by Washington's victory over the British at Trenton on December 26, 1776, Cornwallis arrived with his troops in Trenton on the evening of January 2 prepared to overwhelm Washington's 5,000 exhausted, if exuberant, Continentals and militia with his 8,000 Redcoats. Washington knew better than to engage such a force and Cornwallis knew Washington would try to escape overnight, but he was left to guess at what course Washington would take. Cornwallis sent troops to guard the Delaware River, expecting Washington to reverse the route he took for the midnight crossing on December 25. Instead, Washington left his campfires burning, muffled the wheels of his army's wagon ...
It turns out I was not that far off concerning how badly Washington was outnumbered. Here is a segment that discusses the details of his famous defeat and amazing come-back: Anticipating the British, Washington proceeded to New York and fortified Brooklyn Heights to defend the approaches to New York City. The British commander, General Sir William Howe, made a flanking move which drove Washington from Long Island and forced him to retreat to Harlem Heights. Using naval transport, Howe again outflanked the Americans, forcing Washington to withdraw to White Plains. With the capture of a significant portion of the American army at Fort Washington, the British acquired an undisputed hold on New York City. Washington's army was compelled to retreat through New Jersey and to cross the Delaware River in December 1776. American spirits fell to a low ebb, as approximately 34,000 British regulars confronted Washington's army of 3,000. At this point, Washington made a daring, and possibly his most famous tactical m ...

On this date (Dec. 26) in 1776, General George Washington and the Continental Army crossed the Delaware River from Pennsylvanita to New Jersey and attacked the Hessian garrison in Trenton. Washington won an overwhelming victory and captured or dispersed most of the Hessian force before retiring to Pennsylvania the same day.

Israel Putnam” With the departure of the Continental Congress from Philadelphia on December 12, Washington assigned Israel Putnam as military commander of the city. Alerted to the successful capture of over 900 Hessian soldiers at the Battle of Trenton, Putnam began preparations for their assumed detention in the city. With recruiting attempts continuing in the region, Richard Humpton remained in the city following his December 10 orders from Washington to have any remaining boats removed from the Jersey side of the Delaware River. Congress deferred the request, and while little action was apparently taken following their departure from the city a few days later, sufficient was done to dissuade the British from a pre-Christmas attack upon Phila ...

Mental Vitamin- Day After Christmas Two hundred and thirty-six years ago on this day after Christmas, an historic event took place in New Jersey; whatever your circumstances may be today they are much better than what the patriots had experienced as they attacked a fort near Trenton as a last-ditch effort to save the colonies from further British rule. General George Washington, with about 5,000 soldiers all of whom were unpaid, part-time troops, had crossed the Delaware River after being soundly defeated in several major battles against the professional and much better equipped British Regulars. Their plan had been to take the enemy by surprise by attacking during a fierce snowstorm and frigid temperatures that had frozen the river from one bank to the other. It was a defining moment for Washington; if he lost this battle, there would be no other, and he and his generals would surely hang from the gallows and we would all, today, be British subjects. How would you feel today if the consequences were to b ...
Dec 25, 1776: Washington crosses the Delaware During the American Revolution, Patriot General George Washington crosses the Delaware River with 5,400 troops, hoping to surprise a Hessian force celebrating Christmas at their winter quarters in Trenton, New Jersey. The unconventional attack came after several months of substantial defeats for Washington's army that had resulted in the loss of New York City and other strategic points in the region. At about 11 p.m. on Christmas, Washington's army commenced its crossing of the half-frozen river at three locations. The 2,400 soldiers led by Washington successfully braved the icy and freezing river and reached the New Jersey side of the Delaware just before dawn. The other two divisions, made up of some 3,000 men and crucial artillery, failed to reach the meeting point at the appointed time. At approximately 8 a.m. on the morning of December 26, Washington's remaining force, separated into two columns, reached the outskirts of Trenton and descended on the unsus ...
On this Day in Weather History...26 Dec In 1987, an ice storm ravaged the Southern Plains from Northwest Texas to Southwest Missouri. A mixture of sleet and freezing rain covered two thirds of Oklahoma. Hardest hit was a 40 mile wide band that cut through the heart of the state from Duncan, through Norman and Tulsa, to extreme Northeast Oklahoma. These areas were coated with 1 to 2 inches of ice that severed power to around 75,000 homes, of which 25,000 were still without power 1 week later. Half of Springfield lost power for 24 hours as Southwest Missouri was turned into a skating rink. Damage to trees and power lines was compared to that caused by 100 tornadoes. Seven people were killed. In 1776, George Washington crossed the ice clogged Delaware River. He marched on Trenton in the midst of snow and sleet thus surprising and capturing many of the British garrison. In 1996, cold temperatures engrossed Europe. The sustained cold brought freezing temperatures to Rome, Italy and caused ice to form in the fa ...
On this night in the year 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River to attack pro-British Hessian forces in Trenton New Jersey. He did so to help his young nation establish independence from an old world aristocracy of landed gentry and inherited power and money. Now we see the corporate power elite are seeking to establish the same kind of regime all over again. More and more their money is inherited, they use their power and money to bribe and cheat their way towards locking themselves in to the seat of power. Slavery in the US is now illegal, but the corporatocracy seeks to re-establish it through the use of private prisons with government contracts to keep them “90% full.” The USA, having only 5% of the world's population now have 25% of the world's incarcerated population. They seek to re-establish an aristocracy through unfair labor competition, outsourcing our jobs to places where unions are illegal, but it is legal to force children and adults to work long hours in unsafe conditions. ...
Christmas in America, 1776 Each of us might want to take a moment to remember and reflect on our history today. For on this Christmas night in America, 1776, everything that we hold dear as our national ideals was in dire peril. George Washington's exhausted, decimated and diseased army was but a shadow of the 20,000 who had enlisted in those heady summer days after the Declaration of Independence had been signed. The ensuing 6 months had seen them nearly destroyed while losing every battle trying to hold New York, then chased by elements of a 30,000 strong British Army across New Jersey, and now what remained of America's dream of independence was encamped on the west bank of the Delaware River. Many of those soldiers were on a 6-month enlistment that would expire a few days later. Many were barefoot. They had little food, no blankets, and still wore summer uniforms. They were short on rifles and muskets, and had lost most of their 300 artillery pieces. In short, when the Delaware froze for the winter, t ...

As you celebrate this day of joy with your loved ones, take a moment to pause and reflect on why this day is possible. Through out the history of our Nation great men have endured the worse of conditions to ensure your freedom. Great men like those that went with General George Washington across the Delaware River on Christmas Night. Poorly dressed, under equipped and with 3 days rations these men would cross the icy river and march 10 miles to the Town of Trenton to conduct a surprise attack on Hessian Forces. They would do this during a blizzard, and many of the men had nothing more than rags wrapped around their feet. Their attack under such conditions were unheard of in warfare but it was necessary, an attack of a more superior and well trained force such as the Hessians at any other time would ensure the American defeat. Their fortitude payed off and victory was theirs. Fast forward to World War II, and you will find a force of Americans in the Ardennes Forest, Located in a Mountain range that encomp ...

General George Washington's ragged Continental Army braved the ice on the Delaware River--on Christmas---for FREEDOM!
On Christmas Day in 1776 George Washington and the Continental Army led 2,400 troops across an icy Delaware River...
December 25th, 1776 It was the morning of December 25th, 1776 when General George Washington ordered his, small, ragged army to prepare for their crossing of the Delaware River for their impending attack against the Hessian, and British troops. This strategic move by Washington during the Revolutionary War was a risky, but necessary plan to thwart the British. New York City was falling to the enemy, and the war was being lost. Washington’s army was also diminishing in numbers. A high rate of desertion and disease along with low morale was crippling his already small number of troops. The odds of Washington’s army pulling off a secret, major attack against the this enemy was not in his favor. But the General knew, as he always did, that God was on his side. A few weeks earlier Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet, “The American Crisis.” In it, he penned the words below that Washington used to spark the morale of his troops. In the end, the tattered, colonial army, crossed the ice capped river, and defeat ...
Christmas is a celebration of FREEDOM. Jesus advocated against the “notion that a certain group or nation has a monopoly on human value, while the rest of mankind are properly slaves or mere barbarians.” Christ taught that every man is made in the image of God, thus, EVERY INDIVIDUAL SOUL IS PRECIOUS. Jesus advocated INDIVIDUALISM, the respect of individual rights. On December 25, 1776, George Washington and other Continental Army heroes crossed the icy Delaware River, defeated enemy troops, and turned the tide of war. Merry Christmas!
POLITICAL BRIEF OF THE DAY Christmas with Early American Presidents Accounts of Washington's Christmases are scanty. George Washington spent Christmas night 1776 crossing the Delaware River in dreadful conditions. This event, covered in hundreds of poems and stories is heroic rather than nostalgic! Christmas 1777 fared little better - at Valley Forge, Washington and his men had a miserable Christmas dinner of Fowl cooked in a broth of Turnips, cabbage and potatoes. But in 1783 he retired, and spent Christmas at Mount Vernon with his family and there was 'rousing cheers, song, pistol shots and firecrackers'. His retirement brought a new Christmas pastime to Washington - long before the custom of sending Christmas cards was to become popular, the retired president would spend his time writing Christmas letters. A relation who spent that Christmas with the Washington's wrote this account: "I must tell you what a charming day I spent at Mt. Vernon with Mama and Sally. The General and Madame came home on Chris ...
Last minute Christmas gift: Northern Liberties: The Story of a Philadelphia River Ward (2012). From the back cover: "Since the time of William Penn, the Philadelphia neighborhood of Northern Liberties has had tradition of hard work and innovation. A former Leni-Lenape territory, this district became one of the River Wards of North Philadelphia when annexed by the city in 1854. Its mills and factories were powered not just by the Delaware River and its tributaries, but also by immigrants from across Europe and the city’s largest community of free African Americans. The Liberties’ diverse narrative, however, was marred by political and social problems, such the anti-Irish Nativist Riots of 1844. Local historian Harry Kyriakodis traces over 300 years of the neighborhood’s evolution from its rise as a premier industrial district, to the destruction of much of the original cityscape in the 1960s, to its subsequent rebirth as an eclectic and vibrant urban hub. In this first history of Northern Libertie .. ...

Learn Our History Today: On December 13, 1776, During the American Revolution, as his men marched to help George Washington at the Delaware River, General Charles Lee left his troops and rode to Widow White’s Tavern were he could find the comforts of home. This tavern, however, was miles away from his men and was dangerously exposed. Lee was born in England, where at the age of 12 he took a commission in the British Military, serving in the French and Indian War. In 1773 upon retiring from the army, he moved back to the colonies where he had fought many a battle during the war. He immediately joined up with the patriot cause, becoming a General upon the beginning of hostilities with the British based on his prior military experience. He felt slighted when Washington was given the position of Commander in Chief, as Washington had significantly less experience than him. Lee proved to be quite a sluggish commander, not exactly rushing when Washington wrote him from the Delaware River in desperate need of . ...

Rafting Daniel Skinner and Josiah Parks are credited with running the first raft down the Delaware River to Philadelphia in 1764. Daniel Skinner had been a sailor in the West Indies before settling in this area and seeing the straight, tall hemlocks felt that these would make excellent masts for the tall ships. He developed a method of mortising the ends of the mast timbers, inserting a white oak spindle and pinning the ends of lumber creating a raft. The raft was then fitted with a perpendicular pin cross-log on each end of the raft for hanging oars. This design was successful and his first raft of six masts was floated to Philadelphia. T ...

She's been attending every year for the last seven years, so this must be good! There are many activities available for the children as well as adults such as, candle rolling, block printing, baked apples at their outdoor wood-burning oven, a 'secret garden' filled with amazing hand-made trinkets and others. Plenty of delicious food (all nut-free and some gluten-free items if you or your children have allergies) and live music throughout the day. A 'quiet room' will be available if your children need downtime or are nursing with toys to play, and two playgrounds if they need more space to run around. If you have to park off-site, there is free shuttle service that runs every few minutes. You can call 610.982.5606 for more info.

Chester Pennsylvania is one of the oldest cities in America which resides between Philadelphia & Wilmington DE on the Delaware River near I-95 & Widener University. You have to applaud forward thinking individuals to create a team, build a stadium on water front property in a rundown city full of crime.
"Shangri La was in Denver," your mother tells you, after Thanksgiving dinner, after champagne without the caviar, and half-eaten cheese, and pasta with pesto sauce you bought at the Amish Market on 9th Avenue yesterday afternoon and cooked, a while ago, in her kitchen. Now you’re sitting at the fold-out table in her living room, late afternoon. In another year, another century, you might be smoking cigarettes, but you’re not, you’re drinking white wine, a California Chardonnay, out of your grandmother's beautiful crystal wine glasses, art-deco-y, Fred and Ginger style. "It was Harry Huffman's house on the hill,” she is saying. Her childhood in Denver, “during the war.” You grew up in New Jersey in the Republican counties in the northern part of the state along the Delaware River in the '60s and '70s, but she’s from Colorado, '30s and '40s, and she says, “I'm not making this up. He built it in Denver.” She spells it. “S-H-A-N-G-R-I. SPACE. L-A. During the - no, not during, but before. B ...

UFO Witness I have had two sightings of "UFOs" in my lifetime. The first occurred during the summer of 1973. At the time, I was 26 years old and staying in what was then (and probably has become more populated) the "country", Sussex County New Jersey (Close to the Delaware River) on Lake Kittattinny (lake front house). It was about 11PM. I was lying face up on the dock, watching the sky. Very little ambient light from surroundings at that time since this was real countryside then so the night time sky was magnificent. I spotted what I thought was a satellite in orbit around the earth (a "moving star" so to speak). I laid there and watched it traverse the sky (so this could not have taken much more than 1/2 hour, I have no idea what speed that means but this thing was in ORBIT). It was moving south to north (I think, not sure, but CROSSING the sky). When it reached the northern most section I could see, it stopped and went back in the same direction from which it had come. This was no plane and it certainl ...

Prince Whipple a slave who according to story accompanied George Washington in the famous crossing of the Delaware River
My many-great Grandfather Jacob Ashmead fought along side of General George Washington and scoured the countryside to find food, clothing and other supplies for the Valley Forge troops. Jacob crossed the Delaware River with Washington twice (did you know they did it two times?). The battle field between the Delaware River and Trenton was covered with bodies of men who had so little clothing that their bare skin lay open to the elements and bloody foot prints in the snow. We are not there yet! We are not stripped of everything but our Love of Freedom and our Bloody Feet yet!
We cross that river - the Delaware River - that those men came across 200 yrs ago and then fought the battle of Trenton a few miles away - the decisive turning point in the Revolutionary War - which as a reminder - was started over Taxation!
A lot of misinformation going on in the Iraq/ Ahghanistan wars. First it was to destroy missiles of mass destruction, then it became some sort of Operation freedom. I don't think we should fight for their freedom as the only lasting freedom is as we fought the British at the Delaware River. You must be determined to fight yourself, if not, stay a slave to the rotten rulers. When you visit Valley Forge, it will be much clearer. We as a nation obviously have different beliefs on how to progress. President Obama made this a positive attitude for America. All voices should be heard! He is a great Commander in Chief and as God's word says, we should pray for him fervently. His job is harder than any of ours! He must obtain 535 votes from the Senate and House to get what he desires. I believe those 535 members who were elected have agendas and won't kiss his butt. They spent millions getting elected and they answer to their constituents. I pray Obama can deliver if he can get the 535 members to agree! I agree t ...
Most talking heads admit that central and even western parts of Pennsylvania are red areas but are saying Romney has no chance to win because of the east. Philadelphia is supposed to be solid blue. Romney is drawing 30K with out Hollywood stars on the stage. To make this more interesting is the fact that he is drawing huge crowds just across to Delaware River from Trenton, New Jersey. I am predicting that the trill will not run up the legs of the talking heads but something will trickle down. *** Morris is saying Romney will win by 100 electoral college votes and I agree. My question is not what will happen on election day but rather what the spin will be. What excuses will they make? Will they cry vote suppression? Will they blame racism? Will they blame Sandy? Will they make up some new straw man to blame?
Mr. President There was no bridge when Washington crossed the Delaware River. There were no roads, highways, or railroads when the pioneers crossed the continent. There was no power grid when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. There was no FCC when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. There was no FAA when the Wright brothers invented the self powered flight. IBM, Apple, and Microsoft did not start because of a federal grant. While it is true that people build on things that came before them, but the wonder of true human ingenuity and the indomitable American spirit is that we don't wait to see what is laid there for us but to make it ourselves. We adventure into the unknown with only hopes and dreams. That is why the components did exist to bring about such things, but they would never have been created by simply waiting for someone else to do them for us.
I went from almost needing to evacuate my house (flood zone-Delaware River), to not being affected in the slightest by the storm. Not even a light flicker. I'm like the Bubba Gump Shrimpin' Boat! I'm just saying I was lucky.
Chris Sowers The 5:00am update on what is now Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy shows the storm sitting about 15 miles east of York, Pennsylvania. Maximum sustained winds have dropped down to 65 mph, but there are still some higher gusts. This morning we're seeing major tidal flooding along the Delaware River, Delaware Bay and the Jersey shore. There have been reports of entire towns being under water. With the effects of Sandy still being felt and the full moon out there both high tides today will be well above normal. The high tide for Atlantic City is roughly 8:15am and 8:38pm. The Forecast: Today - Mainly cloudy, windy and damp with periods of rain and/or scattered showers throughout the day. High 54. Winds out of the south 15-30 mph with gusts to 45. Tonight - Cloudy and breezy with a leftover shower. Low 47. Winds south 15-25 mph Wednesday - Mostly cloudy and breezy with a shower around, especially during the morning hours. High 56.

Salem County towns said they are prepared for the worst that Hurricane Sandy has to offer as the storm makes its slow approach into the region. With eight to ten inches rain expected, coupled with high tide levels and powerful winds, towns in the county’s lowest lying areas are expected to be the most vulnerable as the hurricane pounds the county into Tuesday. Residents in Pennsville, Carneys Point, Penns Grove, Salem City, Elsinboro and Lower Alloways Creek should expect considerable flooding, officials said. As of early Monday, local officials said they were already starting to see the impacts of the hurricane — but were bracing for the worst conditions expected late Monday night and early Tuesday as the hurricane makes landfall. “We’ve had some wires down so far and some flooded streets, but nothing major yet,” said Pennsville Lt. Allen Cummings. Cummings said the worst conditions for Pennsville are expected during the high tide periods, especially for areas along the Delaware River. “The e ...

I was just out standing on my porch here in Montpelier in this early morning. It's 6:30AM, cloudy, chilly, quiet, and the sky has an eerie pink glow about it. Hurricane Sandy is already hitting Virginia Beach and the South Jersey shore though it hasn't made landfall yet as it heads for Philadelphia and the Delaware Bay area. Winds are sustained at 85mph (137kmph) stretching out 175miles (282km) from the center, which is an unusually large area for sustained winds, and with record storm surge expected up to 14 feet (4m). Due to the full moon tides are higher than normal and will last much longer. With the cold front coming in from the West, life looks a bit shaky for the Delaware Bay area which is surrounded by South New Jersey on the east, Delaware on the west, and Southeast Pennsylvania to the northwest, with the cities of Wilmington and Philadelphia sitting on the banks of the southern end of the Delaware River being the expected place Sandy's eye will cross over. They have never experienced a direct hi ...
The City of Philadelphia is preparing, and asking residents to prepare for major flooding and power outages in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy. A Flood Watch, Coastal Flood Watch and High Wind Watch is currently in effect beginning Sunday evening into Tuesday afternoon for the City of Philadelphia. Heavy rain will begin Sunday and continue through Tuesday. Between 4 -8 of rain is forecasted for Philadelphia. Significant localized and coastal flooding is anticipated for the city. Residents and businesses in low lying areas with a history of flooding during storms should prepare immediately. Those areas include: sections of Manayunk, along Main Street; the Eastwick section in Southwest Philadelphia; Kelly and King Drives along the Schuylkill River; Lincoln Drive along the Wissahickon Creek; and Delaware River along Columbus Boulevard, from Spring Garden Street to Washington Avenue. In addition, flooding is anticipated on local creeks and streams. For those living in flood prone areas you should make arrange ...
We interrupt your political discussion to bring you this weather update. ??? . The various weather agencies, computer weather models and meteorologists are in agreement now that Hurricane Sandy is going to move northward in a kind of reverse S motion. Yet, because of all the variables that go into trying to predict where a storm of this size will go with so many atmospheric steering currents, nobody at this stage can really determine with any certainty just what stretch of coastline will see the center of the storm make landfall. It's size is going to be massive. The two main models, the EU and GFS have the storm hitting in vastly different locations. At present the EU would have the storm hit somewhere between Norfolk, VA and the mouth of the Delaware River. The GFS puts it over New Haven, CT some 8 hours later. Don't take this lightly. This is so huge and the winds aloft steering this thing are so strong by THEMSELVES, that what this brings to the surface along with it's own wind field will b ...

23 October 1777, The Destruction of HMS Augusta in Delaware River “The Augusta, 64 gun English ship-of-the-line, was part of a fleet which arrived in the Delaware to open supply lines for the British Army occupying Philadelphia. Together with other ships, Augusta passed through a breach in the chevaux de frise obstructions on 22 October to bombard Fort Mifflin, while at the same time Hessian troops assaulted Fort Mercer on the opposite shore in New Jersey. The channel was narrow, and Augusta grounded on one of the many shifting sand bars. Daybreak of 23 October, Commodore John Hazelwood sighting the stricken enemy, closed to attack with row galleys and floating batteries of the Pennsylvania state Navy. During the general engagement which followed, Augusta caught fire. The holocaust raged out of control. Flames reached her powder magazine about noon and the Augusta blew up.” Text: Naval History Division, Department of the Navy, Washington. On this day in history: October 22... 1777: American defenders of Fort Mercer on the Delaware River repulse repeated Hessian attacks in the Battle of Red Bank. 1836: Sam Houston is inaugurated as the first President of the Republic of Texas. 1879: Using a filament of carbonized thread, Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light bulb (it lasted 13½ hours before burning out). 1883: The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City opens with a performance of Gounod's Faust. 1934: In East Liverpool, Ohio, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents shoot and kill notorious bank robber Pretty Boy Floyd. 1957: Vietnam War: First United States casualties in Vietnam.
I had a great time today at Military History Day at Fort Dupont State Park!! We had a wonderful tour guide, who reminisced about her childhood growing up on base-her father was the quartermaster. Afterwards, we took a beautiful trail to look at the fort. The changing colors of the leaves were magnificent. From the trail, we were treated to beautiful view of the Delaware River and Fort Delaware. Afterwards, we went to Hancock House, the site of a British Massacre (during the Revolutionary War) of 10 civilian loyalists and injuries to 5 other civilian loyalists. From there, we lucked out and got to the Finn's Point Range Lighthouse in the knick of time, just before they closed. It was the Annual Lighthouse Challenge, so we were able to climb to the top of the lighthouse and inhale the incredible view (it is normally closed for climbing and we were unable to climb up the last time we were there). Afterwards, we took a short, but scenic hike, through Supawna Meadows. We finished out our lovely day at River Be ...

Daniel Garber , from Indiana, US (1880 - 1958) was an American Impressionist landscape painter and member of the art colony at New Hope, Pennsylvania. He is best known today for his large impressionist scenes of the New Hope area, in which he often depicted the Delaware River. He also painted figurative interior works and excelled at etching. In addition to his painting career, Garber taught art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over forty years. Like most impressionist painters, Garber painted landscapes en plein air, directly from nature. He exhibited his works nationwide and earned numerous awards, including a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915) in San Francisco, California. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1913. Garber died on July 5, 1958, after falling from a ladder at his studio. Today, Garber's paintings are considered by collectors and art historians to be among the finest works produced from the New Hope art colony. His pain ...

We just got back from spending time with our old friends Brian & Judi in the Poconos of eastern PA. We stayed along the Delaware River with New Jersey within walking distance across a foot bridge. The mountain slopes were beautiful in their fall colors. Of course we drove, appreciating this beautiful country of ours all the way. Audio books sure helped the miles fly by. But...there's no place like home and our own bed.

"These Are The Times That Try Men's Souls"!!!, as spoken by Thomas Paine, on the eve of General George Washington's army crossing the Delaware River and defeating the British, a battle which turned the tide in our countries fight for independence. Now, we have a President who won't do HIS job, would rather campaign, and a congress who won't do theirs. No wonder the Islamic extremist around the world are emboldened. Where are our Leaders? Our Generals, our Statesmen, our REAL American Patriots??? Is it time to sit in apathy, more worried about Dancing with Stars, our kids activities, and which cell phone data plan to get, or is it time for Every able bodied, freedom loving American to take a copy of the Constitution in one hand a gun in the other to Washington, and take our country back. The Islamic extremist will never have to fire a shot, for America will be reduced to 3rd world status by complete inaction of Congress, not doing the hard thing and handling our debt, but rather just continue on and keep ...

Well today is Wednesday and we were going to stay here and just hang around. YA right! Got the bikes off the bike rack and had to put air in the tires. This place actually has an air station on site and it is just around the corner from us. Blew up the tires and went around the park. This place is massive! After that little jaunt, we had breakfast and played some games. Did not take long to decide to do something, so we packed a picnic lunch and drove over to the Delaware River near Annapolis and picnicked on the beach. Absolutely beautiful day and the winds were mild. great time. Had to drive over the Bay Bridge which connects the mainland to Kent Island and then back on to Maryland. this is the only crossing over the Delaware until you get to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel further south. I drove over but had Marlene drive back. She is much happier being in the drivers seat going over bridges, because she hates heights, and also because she is driving, she is in charge and also in the middle of th ...
