So we all remember last year's game of writing your bra color as your status? Or the way we like to have our handbag handy? Last year, so many people took part that it made national news... and the constant updating of status reminded everyone why we're doing this and helped raise awareness! Do NOT tell any males what the statuses mean...keep them guessing!! And please copy and paste this in a message to all your female friends. ![]() The Brindle Dogs Day One day there was a brindle dog who decided to stray away from home. This dog was no ordinary brindle dog it had always been wandering away and coming back. It thought that this day would be no different, but he was wrong. It all started when he got in an argument with other dogs about whether he should wander off or not. The main one said âyou need to stop wandering off sooner or later youâre going to lose your collar doing something dumb then the pound will be after youâ. The Brindle dog simply replied saying âevery time I wander off I make sure not to lose my collar and I never have you should know thisâ. The others told him luck would eventually run out but he just wouldnât listen to them. Not paying attention to the rest of the dogs continuing to tell him not to go for reasons he wandered back off into New York City. Once he got there he admired once more what the Big Apple had to offer. The skyscrapers busy streets filled with cars and pedestrians passing by n ...
![]() THE LIFE AND DEATH OF KEVIN CARTER Visiting Sudan, a little-known photographer took a picture that made the world weep. What happened afterward is a tragedy of another sort. BY SCOTT MACLEOD/JOHANNESBURG The image presaged no celebration: a child barely alive, a vulture so eager for carrion. Yet the photograph that epitomized Sudan's famine would win Kevin Carter fame - and hopes for anchoring a career spent hounding the news, free-lancing in war zones, waiting anxiously for assignments amid dire finances, staying in the line of fire for that one great picture. On May 23, 14 months after capturing that memorable scene, Carter walked up to the dais in the classical rotunda of Columbia University's Low Memorial Library and received the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography. The South African soaked up the attention. "I swear I got the most applause of anybody," Carter wrote back to his parents in Johannesburg. "I can't wait to show you the trophy. It is the most precious thing, and the highest acknowledgme ...
![]() I predict a major catastrophe will strike the United States within 6 months. I know it. You know it. We can all sense something huge is about to happen. Could be the economic collapse that has been artificially delayed by TPTB (The Powers That Be). Or maybe, a massive epidemic of some nasty virus, cooked up in the labs of the CDC, at the behest of the gubâment. How about a nice nuclear strike on New York City or Los Angeles? Oh yes, something is coming that will finish toppling this country off her high horse as a superpower, while the world watches with a mixture of fascination, horror and glee. I donât know if weâll see people in other countries, dancing in celebration in the streets at the grievous wound weâll suffer, but I doubt there will be too many tears shed. Besides, it will be the perfect excuse for our illustrious Commandant-in-Chief to declare martial law, and assume the dictatorial reins of power he quivers in his dreams about having. Yes, I know. ![]() Thought of the Day! Jan. 25, 2013 I remember the first time I met Shirley Verrett. She climbed my stairs in my brownstone in New York, 3 flights, to the studio. She had on a lovely flowing outfit with a tunic on her head. Her make up was perfect and she flowed elegantly into the room. Shirley Verrett had a charisma that is still important in the world of opera today. It seems that the public wants a singer to reflect elegance and mystique and Shirley had both in spades. I remember how much fun we had when we worked in 1994. We laughed a lot during those sessions. Shirley was doing the role of Neddi in "Carousel". She was almost 64 when she came to me and I was amazed at her amazing voice. We worked mainly on the lower passaggio because the role required a lot more singing in that range. She did a beautiful job and I went to one of the first performances. I spoke of working in her studio at the University of Michigan later that year. She adored her student and it was obvious that she cared for them deeply. ...

Her husband was a bit better off, because at least Mr. Doolittle was able to get about in a wheelchair. Yet, when Civilla Martin visited the Doolittles in 1904, she was amazed to find the dear couple had joy in the midst of their very difficult day-to-day lives. When Civilla asked Mrs. Doolittle whether she ever got discouraged, the physically (but not spiritually) invalid woman said, "Mrs. Martin, how can I be discouraged when my heavenly Father watches over each little sparrow and I know He loves and cares for me." Those few words inspired Civilla Martin to jot down the lines of what has become a very beloved and encouraging hymn. The bridge was completed in 1883, after 13 years. _ In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before. Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built. Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how ...

![]() On this day in 1865, the Confederate Congress agrees to continue prisoner exchanges, opening a process that had operated only sporadically for three years. In the first year of the Civil War, prisoner exchanges were conducted primarily between field generals on an ad hoc basis. The Union was reluctant to enter any formal agreements, fearing that it would legitimize the Confederate government. But the issue became more important as the campaigns escalated in 1862. In July 1862, Union General John Dix and Confederate General Daniel H. Hill reached an agreement in which each soldier was assigned a value according to rank. For example, one private was worth another private; corporals and sergeants were worth two privates; and lieutenants were worth three privates. A commanding general was worth 60 privates. Under this system, thousands of soldiers were exchanged rather than languishing in prisons like those in Andersonville, Georgia, or Elmira, New York. The system was really a gentlemen's agreement, relying ...

Why is it then that so many Americans - and foreigners who come here - feel that the place is so, well, safe? A lady approached the young boy and said, 'My, but you're in such deep thought staring in that window!' 'I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,' was the boy's reply. The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her. She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel. By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes. She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) by now should be in receipt of a letter from various Chicago Women's Groups, demanding former Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson be removed from this Saturday night's (Jan. 26, 2013) UFC on FOX 6 fight card. The reason? "Rampage" released a video last year explaining how to rape a woman in a parking garage using chloroform, zip ties and low self-esteem. He also said it was done in an effort to get himself kicked out of the UFC and promised to next "do one on car-jackers." This isn't the first time the Culinary Union has led the charge against FOX or UFC. Just last month, representatives blasted the network for allowing Jeremy Stephens to compete at UFC on FOX 5 in Seattle, despite having a pending trial for assault charges in Minneapolis, just as they condemned the promotion's decision to include Abel Trujillo, who twice plead guilty to "domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury" against th ...

![]() What is this âPilatesâ thing ? Recently Pilates seems to be all around the place, but what is it exactly ? A mix between physiotherapy and yoga ? Not exactly⊠Letâs find out. First of all, we should know that the term Pilates comes from its creator, Joseph H. Pilates born in Germany in 1883. Although, Joseph was suffering of a thorax malformation, he became a great athlete in many disciplines. He believed in physical training and insisted in the relation of the body and mind in health. Joseph Pilates loves to observe animals and the way they stretch to get inspiration for his method. In the beginning of the 1900âs he started to build âmachinesâ to allow injured people to work from their bed doing stretching exercise to stimulate the body. During the First World War, Joseph is in detention in a camp and starts to train his co-prisoners to keep them fit and healthy. During the terrible flu epidemic of 1918 none of the Pilates âstudentsâ died as, Joseph claims, a result of his training meth ...
![]() wait weren't they in New York City on their first day
![]() Chasing the Dragon Words by Rome Jorge Images by Gabriel Dela Cruz  I did the biggest no-no in travel. (No, I didnât get caught bringing contraband at the airport.) I made everybody else wait on the tour bus. And I did it on purpose.  We were at Lugang on the way to Taichung, the third largest city in Taiwan and halfway between the harbor city of Kaohsiung and the capital Taipei, to stroll the streets and see for ourselves the Taiwan Lantern Festival. But the irony was that we were all expected to be back in the bus by six in the eveningâjust as darkness would fall and the lanterns would light up. If I were to follow this part of the itinerary strictly, I would miss out on the spectacleâthe very reason we were here.  So I bided my time savoring spicy street food and washing it down with Taiwan Beer as well as hot tea, while the wind made the cold truly chilly.  True enough, at six oâ clock, the multitude of lanterns that lined the street, seemingly unimpressive when they were unlit in the ...

He looked at the rear mirror and our eyes met and he asked back; âdo you prefer potholes on the roads?â. Not getting an answer from me, he fired again, are there potholes on Nigerian roads? âNot really, butâŠem except in some few rural roadsâ, I lied, defending my country. Besides all the wide and marked roads, hardly can one see a road driving for a four-hour journey from Johannesburg to the province of Mpumalanga where the Eagles are grouped in the Nations Cup. The journey was swift and safe as the driver had a speed limit unlike the formular 1 drivers in Nigeria.  Deltas from around the world floated on cloud nine as we watched that historic moment as Delta Sigma Thetaâs float made its way down the parade route of the 124th Rose Bowl parade. It was not just about having a float, but letting the world know that we are "Transforming Communities through Sisterhood and Service". We were called to serve.  And the celebration continued. Topping the float was going to be difficult. But the sorority did. Cities are being lit up as the Centennial torch makes its way across the country to its final destination in July, Washington, DC. ![]() Thursday, January 24, 2013 God Chose You Before You Chose Him by Rick Warren âDear friends, God the Father chose you long ago and knew you would become His children.â (1 Peter 1:2 LB) God chose you long before you chose him. God took the initiative. The Good News translation puts it this way: âYou were chosen according to the purpose of God.â Why would God choose you or me to be a part of his family? Because he is a God of love; he is a God of grace. The more you understand grace, the more you're going to be amazed by it. God chose you. Did you deserve it? Not a chance. Do you deserve to go to Heaven? No way! Are you good enough to be in God's family? No. He just chose you. And that's good news. On what basis did he choose you? First Peter 1:3 says, "For it is His boundless mercy that has given us the privilege of being born again so that now we are members of God's own family." God chose you based on his mercy, not your performance. You'll never earn it. You'll never deserve it. You couldn't work ...

There are so many more things than hay and grain and they don't understand what goes into the operation. There is wear and tear, fences, pastures, insurance, utilities, and my own time for starters. We charge 325.00 a month, and it's not making a dent. I may have to go to 400.00 a month. Sound like too much? I need opinions. Though I have a rather large DVD library, I still have a love-hate relationship with the medium, particularly with their endless special features, which seem to become increasingly less special with each viewing. Nothing, not even the Internet, swallows up my time more than DVD special features. Iâm a fairly thrifty (okay, cheap) person, so if I buy a DVD, I want to get my moneyâs worth. That means Iâm going to watch all, and I mean ALL, of the special features, even the fifth audio commentary starring the grips and craft service. Audio commentaries alone can take up to 2 hours or more of your time, depending on the length of the movie, and even then, you donât get to enjoy the film, just some guy yammering away about it while the music, dialogue, and sound effects are squeezed into the background. It was not unusual for him to ride with the firefighters, raid with the police, or take field trips with orphans. On a bitterly cold night in January of 1935, the mayor turned up at a night court that served the poorest ward of the city. LaGuardia dismissed the judge for the evening and took over the bench himself. Within a few minutes, a tattered old woman was brought before him, charged with stealing a loaf of bread. She told the mayor that her daughter's husband had left, her daughter was sick, and her two grandchildren were starving. However, the shopkeeper, from whom the bread was stolen, refused to drop the charges. "It's a real bad neighborhood, your Honor," the man told the mayor. "She's got to be punished to teach other people around here a lesson." LaGuardia sighed. He turned to the woman and said, "I've got to punish you. The law makes no exceptions. Ten dollars or ten days in jail." ...

![]() The Book of Mormon is a sacred text of the Latter Day Saint movement that adherents believe contains writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2200 BC to AD 421.[1][2] It was first published in March 1830 by Joseph Smith as The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi.[3] According to Smith's account, and also according to the book's narrative, the Book of Mormon was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as "reformed Egyptian" [4] engraved on golden plates. Smith claimed that the last prophet to contribute to the book, a man named Moroni, buried it in a hill in present-day New York and then returned to earth in 1827 as an angel,[5] revealing the location of the book to Smith and instructing him to translate and disseminate it as evidence of the restoration of Christ's true church in the latter days.

Lehman where I have been a journalism consultant, are the top two schools in the city that seized weapons from students in 2010-2011. Metal detectors prevented weapons from getting in the buildings and sadly this is what out society has become. Like · · 11 minutes ago
