SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 2011 KEATS "VOTE WITH THEIR FEET AND WALLETS" AND LEAVE FOR TEXAS Former State Senator and Republican Cook County Board President candidate Roger Keats and his wife Tina are leaving Illinois to live in Texas. They bid farewell to their Illinois friends in a Wilmette Beacon article and with this letter this weekend, saying they're "voting with their feet and their wallets": GOOD BYE AND GOOD LUCK As we leave Illinois for good, I wanted to say goodbye to my friends and wish all of you well. I am a lifelong son of the heartland and proud of it. After 60 years, I leave Illinois with a heavy heart. BUT enough is enough! The leaders of Illinois refuse to see we can’t continue going in the direction we are and expect people who have options to stay here. I remember when Illinois had 25 congressmen. ![]() Though I tend to post this on July 4th, I think it fitting this weekend since the American flag has draped the caskets of an untold number of our active military and veterans. May we never forget their service and sacrifice. "I AM THE FLAG" I was born on the July 4th, 1776, and the Declaration of Independence is my birth certificate. The bloodlines of the world run in my veins, because I offered freedom to the oppressed. I am many things, and many people. I am the nation. I am 315 million living souls – and the ghost of millions who have lived and died for me. I am Nathan Hale and Paul Revere. I stood at Lexington and fired the shot heard around the world. I am Washington, Jefferson, and Patrick Henry. I am John Paul Jones, the Green Mountain boys, and Davy Crockett. I am Lee and Grant and Abe Lincoln. I remember the Alamo, the Maine, and Pearl Harbor. ![]() SIMPLE BEGINNINGS Disada animation began many years ago in a simple manner. Back in the mid-to late 1950s there were no TV shows on the latest movies or how they were made. No Entertainment Tonight, no making of DVDs (no DVDs) and hardly any books. There was one exception. On many of his weekly TV shows Walt Disney would show how his films were made (a great way to do publicity for each new film) and he especially showed how animation was done. Back in grade school my school books, like most others' text books, became flip books as we drew characters in the margins and made them move. The Disney show was THE show to see and talk about, as much as for animation as for Davy Crockett. But when I was ten I took it a step further. Starting then, and for the next few years, the garage in my home thankfully never housed a car. It housed an animation studio where after school people from my school came over and drew animation. We made light tables based on the Walter Foster animation book which had plans on how t ...

But now I realize that it wasn't because I wanted to get away from the place I grow up in. It was because no matter where in Texas I lived I was still home, and now after living in a different state I now know that Texas is home and it is about time me and my wife made it back to where we left our hearts. I do not care if it is DFW, Austin, Houston, San Antone or any place in between. I leave you with these words from Mr. Davy Crockett; "You can all go to *** I'm going to Texas!" (soon I hope)

Kids can make mistakes and even with intention to kill. When my brother was barely 7 years old, a neighborhood boy along with a pack of other boys a little older than my brother cheering him on nearly strangled my brother to death just because he is a Christian. They would have succeeded too if my mother had not looked out the window and saw it happening and rushed to his rescue and if she had not been a nurse. The agreement specified rental fees ranging from $7.95 to $13.95. This first batch of titles on VHS and Beta included 10 live action movies: Pete's Dragon, The Black Hole , The Love Bug, Escape to Witch Mountain, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The North Avenue Irregulars, The Apple Dumpling Gang, and Hot Lead and Cold Feet; and three of the compilations of short cartoons previously released by DiscoVision: On Vacation with Mickey Mouse and Friends, Kids is Kids starring Donald Duck, and Adventures of Chip 'n' Dale. Later, on December 30, 1980, Mary Poppins was added to make 14 titles in all.

![]() REMEMBER THE ALAMO!! TODAY - MARCH 6TH. THEY DIED FOR TEXAS! LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS! The Battle of the Alamo In December 1835, in the early stages of Texas' war for independence from Mexico, a group of Texan (or Texian) volunteers led by George Collinsworth and Benjamin Milam overwhelmed the Mexican garrison at the Alamo and captured the fort, seizing control of San Antonio. By mid-February 1836, Colonel James Bowie and Lieutenant Colonel William B. Travis had taken command of Texan forces in San Antonio. Though Sam Houston, the newly appointed commander-in-chief of the Texan forces, argued that San Antonio should be abandoned due to insufficient troop numbers, the Alamo's defenders–led by Bowie and Travis–dug in nonetheless, prepared to defend the fort to the last. These defenders, who despite later reinforcements never numbered more than 200, included Davy Crockett, the famous frontiersman and former congressman from Tennessee, who had arrived in early February. On February 23, a Mexican f ...
![]() What's special about today, March the 6th? Well it's the 177th anniversary of the taking of the Alamo and the death of one of my heroes Davy Crockett. Yes it was Fes Parker and the Disney production that helped that along. It's also the birthday of one of my favorite uncles, my late Uncle George who was a decorated WW II Marine who stormed Tarawa and Ima Jima on the first wave and survived. It's also my birthday and I'm still vertical! Yes I had a heart cath and a stent but feel great. In fact better than I can remember... that's due in large part to this project. Getting lots of exercise and the purpose means so much. That's important since my father died of a heart attack 30 yrs ago at age 66. So we'll get through that. The weather here is crappy with cold wet rain and snow accompanied by high winds. I got the Trumble bow out of the form and cleaned up ready to sculpt into a rounded U. ![]() Storm winds of tyranny blew across Texas in early 1836. In those days the region was a part of Mexico, where General Santa Anna had seized power and made himself dictator. Texans weren’t willing to submit to his rule, so Santa Anna marched north with an army. In San Antonio a small band gathered to make their stand at the Alamo, an old Spanish mission turned into a fort. They were tough characters, men who had settled a Wild Frontier. With them was the famous Davy Crockett from Tennessee. The Mexican army arrived and demanded the Alamo’s surrender. The Texans answered with a cannon shot. Santa Anna ordered a red flag raised, a signal meaning “We will take no prisoners.” Colonel William Travis, commander of the Alamo, dispatched messengers bearing appeals for reinforcements. “Our flag still waves proudly from the walls,” he wrote. “I shall never surrender nor retreat . . . Victory or death!” Only 32 men made their way through the enemy lines to join the Texans at the Alamo. That brought the ...

![]() February 23 - The Battle of the Alamo at San Antonio de Bexar, Mexico began today in 1836. Mexican troops attempted to take the fort for thirteen days before succeeding on March 6. All the Texian defenders were killed, anywhere between 182 to 257 men, including Lt. Col. William Travis, former Tennessee US Congressman and frontiersman Davy Crockett, and Sam Bowie. The women and Travis' slave were spared by President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and sent back home. General Sam Houston took control of the Texian army and executed sixteen consecutive retreats from Santa Anna's forces until he led them right where he wanted them, trapped on three sides by water with only one narrow escape. In a daring daylight attack, Houston's army routed Santa Anna's army in the Battle of San Jacinto. The battle lasted eighteen minutes. Santa Anna was captured the next day resulting in the establishment of the Republic of Texas. Houston served as President of Texas, US Senator from Texas, and Governor of Texas until h ...

![]() Unique science fiction and fantasy shows like Walking Dead and Once Upon A Time (and there are dozens more) have quite a following. Some of us don't want to touch them with gloves on. Truth is, that genre of TV has been around a long time. Rod Serling's Twilight Zone comes to mind. Star Trek. Buffy. Even daytime TV got into the act decades ago with Dark Shadows. No doubt there are a lot more special effects and graphic display or gruesome moments, but characters and story lines either make the shows work or not. Violence on TV and at the movies is pretty extreme. Yet Matt Dillon, the Untouchables, and even Davy Crockett took out a lot of bad guys decades ago. Jerry was forever running away from Tom's wrath.

![]() February 12, 1838...Charles Carroll Walcutt (February 12, 1838, Columbus, OH – May 2, 1898, Omaha, NB) was a surveyor, soldier, and politician. He served as a general in the Union Army during the Civil War, in which he was wounded twice. After the war, Walcutt was warden of the Ohio State Penitentiary and also was active in civic affairs in Ohio, and his death was attributed to his wounds from the Civil War. He was a son of John M. Walcutt, a chair maker, and Mariel Broderick, and had three sisters, one of whom was named Virginia. Walcutt's maternal grandmother was also a first cousin of Davy Crockett. Both his father (War of 1812) and grandfather (American Revolution) had served the United States in combat. Walcutt received his initial education in the Columbus-area schools, and then in 1854 entered the Kentucky Military Institute in Lyndon, Kentucky. He graduated in June 1858, indenting to become a civil engineer, and he was elected Franklin County's surveyor the following year. Walcutt married Phebe ...

![]() I read once that Davy Crockett when he was a Congressman made a speech in Congress that should be read everyday now. I don't have the speech but basically someone had proposed funding of a memorial giving tribute to a fallen hero, Crocket said that even though the cause was admirable, it wasn't Congress money to spend on anything that wasn't specifically intended by our Constitution. Clearly Crockett was a hero on and off the field of battle. Ron
![]() This is a very long read, but I am sure that this story sums up a very big difference between then and now. I do not believe that one word has changed in our Constitution to justify the actions being taken by our elected leaders. Davy Crockett vs. Welfare From The Life of Colonel David Crockett, by Edward S. Ellis (Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, 1884) Crockett was then the lion of Washington. I was a great admirer of his character, and, having several friends who were intimate with him, I found no difficulty in making his acquaintance. I was fascinated with him, and he seemed to take a fancy to me. I was one day in the lobby of the House of Representatives when a bill was taken up appropriating money for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in its support – rather, as I thought, because it afforded the speakers a fine opportunity for display than from the necessity of convincing anybody, for it seemed to me that everybody favored it. The Speak ...

![]() This is a true story. I didn’t understand it. It was raining. It was always raining. I had my Davy Crockett fringed jacket and my Daniel Boone ‘coonskin cap and I was, as usual, ready to explore the acres of woods around the house. So, reluctantly I put the jacket and the cap over the stick that was fashioned like ol’ Tick Licker (rifle), and went off to find the answer. “Why is it always raining mom?” I was never surprised at her answers. They always had something to do with drinking water or making the plants and trees green. None of those things mattered to me. We lived on Cape Cod and summer weather was too precious to be wasted on something as inconvenient as rain. The Alamo needed to be defended and the Kentuck’ frontier needed to be explored. “You need to stay in and rest anyway.” she would say. I was already gloomy about the rain and general dreariness of the day and she had to bring that up. December, 1957 This Christmas I had been given the worst of all Christmas prese ...

![]() Central Library Diaspora event: Public Talk by Karen McCarthy acclaimed journalist and author of ‘The Other Irish: The Scots-Irish Rascals who made America’. ‘What do Davy Crockett, Mark Twain, and Neil Armstrong have in common? They are descendants of feisty Scots-Irish immigrants who traveled the ocean to the new world in the early 1700s. Rebellious, independent, and fervently religious, thousands of immigrants with grand dreams sailed from Ireland's northern harbors to the new world at the end of the 1700s and tamed the American South. Karen McCarthy, author, journalist and documentary film maker based in New York and Dublin, will talk about her latest book and the Scots-Irish in Central Library on Thursday 31st January at 7pm. This talk is part of a tour by Karen in selected venues throughout the country, sponsored by Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade – not to be missed! ![]() Day 1 Report log - Arriving at the airport at midday yesterday, my crew (my sister Aimee and her soul mate/my brother-from-another-mother Craig) came to the horrible discovery that our flight to Orlando from Detroit was delayed for 2 1/2 hours! Making the best of the situation and no sour faces, we explored the airport and shared movies and listened to our music. (We should be grateful for age we live in... This would have been rather difficult 20 years ago let alone 10). Our plane finally arrived at 5 and took flight 30 min later. While the youngest of our crew slept across our laps, the rest of us shared our music and listened to podcasts! Orlando came to sight around 8 o'clock EST. Having slight difficulty finding our luggage we then made our way to the Disney magical express bus and finally arrived to our resort, Wilderness Lodge, where should have been hours ago around 6, where it was 9 actually. After settling into our room, we got rather comfortable and I popped in my DVD of Davy Crockett finding r ...

![]() DAVY CROCKET — One of the great things about growing up in the 1950's was all the wonderful role models we had — like Fess Parker, the 6'6" actor who played Davy Crockett on the Wonderful World of Disney every Sunday afternoon. The show was only on the air in 1955-56 but Fess Parker made Davy Crockett movies after that. Here is the famous theme song, which I still find myself singing. Our son David heard me singing it a lot while he was growing up, but I'd substitute "Davy Jenkins" for "Davy Crockett" in the song! I love the images described in the song, especially the reference to Davy Crockett's going to Washington and "patching up the cracks in the Liberty Bell" which probably inspired me a bit when I was in politics. I always wanted to patch up the cracks in the Liberty Bell! Ha! Have a listen...

On my moms side the mans name was Micajah Autry he was friends with Davy Crockett. You may recognize his last name "Autry"... Yes Gene Autry is my 3rd cousin. ![]() I tend to write about people who, for one reason or another, are considered heroes, and I do a lot of musing about what makes someone a hero. While all of us would probably like to be considered heroic in some way, what sets these people apart from the rest of us? After all, nobody gets out of bed in the morning thinking, "Today is the day I go down in history." Heroes, it seems to me, are people who are pretty much like the rest of us, until they are forced by extraordinary circumstance to rise above their fears and self interest. No one wants to die or be seriously injured, for instance, but there comes a moment when some among us do just those things in the name of something larger than themselves, whether it might be protecting their country and their way of life, or protecting the safety and lives of others. It is all too easy for us to say, "Well, that was okay for Davy Crockett, or Daniel Boone, or Audie Murphy, or Sergeant York. Those guys were cast in that heroic mold." But really, these people . ...
